Dave Mustaine is the co-founder, frontman, primary songwriter, and sole consistent member of the thrash metal band Megadeth. A pioneer of the American thrash metal movement, Mustaine formed Megadeth in 1983 after his departure from Metallica, where he served as lead guitarist and co-songwriter. With Megadeth, he has released sixteen studio albums, sold over 50 million records worldwide, earned six platinum certifications, and won a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 2017 for the title track of Dystopia. Known for his intricate guitar work, snarling vocal style, and lyrics exploring war, politics, and personal struggles, Mustaine remains a towering figure in heavy metal. Despite overcoming challenges like substance abuse, a 2002 arm injury, and throat cancer in 2019, he continues to tour and create music, with Megadeth's latest album, The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead!, released in 2022. He is working on his 17th album. Mustaine is also expanding his family's wine venture, House of Mustaine, and mentors emerging artists. CHRIS ADLER Talks FIRSTBORNE, Health Struggles, and the Real Story Behind His Shocking Firing From LAMB OF GOD in 2019

THE LOADED RADIO PODCAST

The Grammy-winning drummer joins the Loaded Radio Podcast to discuss new music, past tensions, and what really happened with Megadeth and Lamb Of God TL;DR The Chris Adler Loaded Radio Podcast interview: The drummer talks about his latest band Firstborne, living with musician's dystonia, and—for the first time in full—what led to his firing from Lamb Of God. In this in-depth conversation, Adler opens up about working with Dave Mustaine on Megadeth's Dystopia, the emotional toll of being let go from a band he helped build, and the creative fire that still fuels his work today. The podcast follows the viral teaser video that garnered over 200,000 views in just days. You can check that out at the bottom of this article. Firstborne and the return of creative freedom In the early moments of the podcast, Chris Adler talks passionately about his current band, Firstborne, a high-powered metal outfit that includes bassist James LoMenzo (ex-Megadeth, White Lion) and vocalist Girish Pradhan (Girish and The Chronicles). For Adler, Firstborne represents not just a new project, but a reclaiming of musical identity. He describes the band as a space where he can create without compromise—an important contrast to his time in more rigid, expectation-heavy settings like Lamb Of God and Megadeth. With new music in the works and a growing fanbase, Firstborne is where Adler says he feels most musically free. The Chris Adler Loaded Radio Podcast Interview: “It was devastating to me.” One of the most talked-about moments in metal this week came from a teaser clip—now gone viral—in which Chris Adler confirmed he was fired from Lamb Of God. In the full podcast episode, he goes much deeper, explaining that he was silently suffering from musician's dystonia, a neurological condition that severely affected his right leg, making drumming a physical and emotional struggle. Adler makes it clear that the departure was not mutual or voluntary. At the time, the band didn't fully understand what he was dealing with—nor did he. It was only after his exit that he received a diagnosis. Working with Megadeth: “It was lovely.” Adler's time in Megadeth was short but historic. He recorded drums for the band's Grammy-winning album Dystopia and performed live with them during a particularly high-profile period. In the episode, Adler reflects on working with Dave Mustaine, saying, “He's the most generous, nicest, kindest guy.” Despite Mustaine's often polarizing reputation, Adler describes the experience as “a dream come true.” At the same time, he acknowledges that working with Megadeth and Protest The Hero during that same period contributed to growing tension within Lamb Of God, which was already strained by his physical health issues. The emotional aftermath and what's next Adler also discusses the emotional impact of being removed from the band he co-founded, the complicated relationships that followed, and his journey to acceptance. He makes it clear that despite everything, he holds no ill will, and continues to find peace and purpose through projects like Firstborne and his latest band Shallow Rising. The conversation is open, honest, and at times heavy—making it one of the most significant interviews of Adler's career to date. Inside the Underground: Joe Davis Joins the Show The second half of this week's Loaded Radio Podcast marks the debut of a brand-new segment we're calling Inside the Underground — a recurring feature where we highlight the voices of people who live and breathe heavy music from the inside. These are the producers, players, artists, writers, and behind-the-scenes champions of metal culture who often go unheard — but deserve to be known. This week, Joe Davis of The Joe Davis Band joins Scott to talk about who he is, what he does, and why his journey in music matters. A gifted guitarist, songwriter, and independent artist, Joe Davis brings authenticity and grit to everything he touches — and in this conversation, he shares the struggles, wins, and motivations that fuel his place in the metal and hard rock community. It's a grounded, human contrast to the headline stories, and a fresh addition to what the Loaded Radio Podcast delivers weekly.

This episode features Benny, a musician and producer who performs under the name Muted Circus. Benny, originally from Orange County, California, is currently based in Brooklyn, New York. He spent seven years in Tokyo, Japan, and attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. The discussion starts with Benny sharing the story of his first rock concert at the age of 13, where he saw The Get Up Kids in a small, intimate venue in his hometown. This concert sparked his lifelong passion for live music, leading him to attend concerts frequently, including during his college years and time in Japan. Benny reminisces about the DIY music scene of Orange County in the '90s and shares anecdotes about attending shows with his older brother and friends. He also recalls a memorable yet disappointing encounter with Dave Mustaine from Megadeth during a concert in Tokyo, juxtaposing it with a positive experience meeting Marty Friedman, a former Megadeth guitarist. The conversation then shifts towards Benny's musical project, Muted Circus, a deeply personal undertaking inspired by the death of his father. The project comprises 10 EPs with 50 songs, each featuring his father's visual artwork on the covers. Benny explains how creating this music helped him process his grief and reflect on his relationship with his father. He delves into the themes explored in his music, often revolving around the impact of his parents on his life. Benny shares the challenges and emotional journey of writing and recording these songs over several years. He also introspects on the nuances of live vs. recorded music and the emotional resonance that well-produced music can often deliver.During the interview, Benny performs 'Disconnection,' a song from his final EP in the Muted Circus series. The song captures the sentiment of final phone calls with a loved one and reflects Benny's extensive relationship with his father through daily check-ins on the phone. The episode concludes with Benny discussing his future plans for more music releases under different projects and emphasizing the therapeutic power of music in processing complex emotions. Listeners can explore Benny's work on platforms like Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube.BANDS: No Doubt, The Get Up Kids, Jimmy Eat World, Real Big Fish, Gwen and Eric Stefani, Megadeth, NSYNC, Metallica, Slayer, Marty Friedman, Dave Mustaine.VENUES: Makuhari Messe (Japan), Koos Cafe, The Chain Reaction, Madison Square Garden. What do Björk, crust punks, and shattered phone screens have in common? Not a lot, unless you're listening to this week's Beat Motel episode, where Andrew is rejoined by Sam for a gloriously unhinged chat on how songs end... or don't.We spend a solid half hour rambling before even mentioning the episode's topic. But who needs structure when you've got riffs of the week ranging from crunchy sludge to grindcore bands sampling podcast clips (shoutout Hello Kitty Funland), a philosophical debate on crust punk fashion, and the inevitable descent into chat about Lord of the Rings accents, bending phones, and old dudes getting emotional about The Charlatans? We do eventually talk endings—codas, fade-outs, orgasmic musical climaxes (sorry mum), and tracks that just yeet themselves into oblivion like Sabbath's "War Pigs." You'll hear tracks that end with a question mark, songs that smash themselves to bits with piano noise, and at least one that leaves you wondering if the studio engineer fell asleep on the desk.In this episode:Why Björk is the queen of the chaos outroWhat Led Zeppelin got right with “Achilles' Last Stand”A crash course in Blackened Crust™Whether anyone actually needs a folding phoneWhy crust punks are just vegans with patches and traumaHow The Clash nailed the fade-out (and birth control lyrics)Oh, and we manage to wind up fans of Pantera and Dave Mustaine in one go. Zeljko zeigt Interesse an Babymetal. SAILING THE SEAS OF CHEESE, the 2nd beautifully bizarre edition of “the Sunday funny papers of metal”, brought to you by El Sobrante, California's genius weirdo trio, PRIMUS, is the gold standard of the eccentric sound of “boxless” progressive, funk metal overtones filtered through a heroic dose of psychedelic infused absurdity and combined with an ample sized bowl of surreal silliness.   With drum beats that are right, smack dab ”in the pocket”, bass lines that defy the laws of music and reality, orchestrated, atonal, guitar noise that's always a tad off, and lyrics covering a vast array of peculiar and unusual topics, ranging from promiscuous cats to reckless race car drivers to weird time signatures to sheer luck, SAILING THE SEAS OF CHEESE is one of those recordings that every metal head with a well-defined sillier side (and a “sophisticated palette”) must possess.     Grab a handful of relaxation and enjoy “a positive Applebee's experience” while also noting that this is our 2nd PRIMUS episode featuring a story about Applebee's (seriously, what are the odds of that happening almost 3 years later!?). Discover the reason McDonald's is diabolical and why it's exactly like something else that's “not even the same ballpark”, understand that it's perfectly okay to have “different tastes” with regard to entertainment shown “in slow motion”, and brace yourself for a first time Steve Harvey impression that morphed into a Katt Williams impression that was followed by an even better, more impressive Katt Williams impression when you JOIN US as we gear up to go snorkeling through the caverns of queso while SAILING THE SEAS OF CHEESE.   Visit www.metalnerdery.com/podcast for more on this episode Help Support Metal Nerdery https://www.patreon.com/metalnerderypodcast Leave us a Voicemail to be played on a future episode: 980-666-8182   Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies – metalnerdery.com/merch and kindly leave us a review and/or rating on the iTunes/Apple Podcasts - Spotify or your favorite Podcast app Listen on iTunes, Spotify, Podbean, or wherever you get your Podcasts. Marty Friedman is playing the Token Lounge on Friday, January 31st, but first, he spoke with me on numerous topics. His latest book is called Dreaming Japanese. In the book, he talks about the highs and lows of playing in a monstrous band like Megadeth, leaving and starting over in a foreign land. He said he read other autobiographies to give himself a clearer look at what he wanted his to be like. “I got a feel as a reader of what I wanted to read myself. And as a result, I wound up being flat honest and talking about embarrassing things about myself, and I didn’t always paint myself in a good light.” As he puts it, talking about the good things he’s done might read more like a resume, not a personal behind-the-scenes look that he wanted to give the fans. He said, “I’m definitely not the hero in all of these stories.” As far as leaving Megadeth went, he said he’d never really talked about it before. ” Once I left Megadeth, I stopped doing interviews about the band completely.” He told me that the venues he played at, weren’t allowed to promote the show with anything Megadeth. Now he wants to talk about the relationships and the inner turmoil as he decided to exit the band. “I feel really bad about the way I left the band, and the situation I left them in, and you can in the book why it turned out that way…and there’s no excusing what I did. It wasn’t going to happen any other way.” He said that joining the band on stage for two concerts in 2023 closed the chapter on that part of his life, which was still open. ” Yeah, especially the Budokan show in Japan. That was one thing that was hanging over, ya know.” He spoke of wanting to play at that venue from an early age. Now, he’s played it several times, but there was a need to play that place with Megadeth. He called it “unfinished business”. When we (Dave Mustaine and him) had the chance to play there, it was a big celebration.” He said that even though they went down different paths to meet up at that gig over the years, it was like a love letter to the fans when it was all said and done. “It was definite closure!” He also spoke to the massive popularity of the band in the early 90s. “What led up to it was more interesting than actually getting there. The suffering part of the career. It reads better in the book.” He then describes it as taking a “massive dump”. Yes, you need to hear him talk about the rise of the band with a bowel movement analogy. I think it’s been about 26 years since I last spoke with Marty. Great to have him back on Talkin’ Rock with Meltdown.

But even as we prepare to install Linda McMahon as the country's head of education (to be fair, Jim Hellwig was unavailable), I take some solace in knowing that you, the loyal listeners of this program, are prepared to rise up in stark opposition to the daily insults to our intelligence and basic humanity. That is, once you're done with holiday shopping and arguing over who won 2024, MJ Lenderman or Charli XCX. The correct choices, of course, would've been Ned Hayden or Charli XCX, but regardless, I am semi-confident your tolerance for all things crushing spirits and lives alike will dissipate sometime between January 2 and... oh who the fuck am i kidding.   It's gonna be business as usual.   Everything and everyone sucking is the planet's business and business is booming (with apologies to Dave Mustaine)

#270 GHOST - INSIDE THE METAL

“They're the Toto of metal…” In keeping with the Halloween centric theme of October, obviously we've got to talk about “devil music”, and what better band to represent “the devil stuff” than GHOST, who's not at all bashful about their utilization of Satan for inspiration. Imagine the mysteriousness of Blue Oyster Cult, but “kinda more metal, and sorta satanic a little bit”. While not overtly hateful or evil per se (as far as “devil music” goes), there is certainly a dark, otherworldly, and strangely hypnotic aesthetic to GHOST. With music containing powerful melodies & catchy hooks and lyrics incorporating a liberal infusion of “the devil stuff” (not to mention the eerie imagery, including a satanic pope and several Nameless Ghouls), listeners may experience a “flavor clash” from the resulting sonic incongruity as the music of GHOST is “kinda happyish but their lyrics are the exact opposite.” Before engaging in anything remotely fun (especially if it includes a third wheel), be sure “the math is right” ahead of time and remember that the formula is “half your age plus 7” (either way). Go ahead and crack open a can of “coconut key lime pie” and understand that even though we may have to “Ixnay on the Its-tay”, realize that Baphomet definitely has some “strong C's” and JOIN US as we go INSIDE THE METAL with the mysteriously mesmerizing sounds of Linkoping, Sweden's GHOST. POP LIFE EP. 30: WAS 1986 THE GREATEST YEAR FOR THRASH METAL? ft. Chris Kontos

THIS IS REVOLUTION >podcast

Welcome to today's episode, where we dive into the explosive year of 1986—a year many consider the greatest in the history of thrash metal. We'll explore the rise of "The Big 4 of Thrash," the decline of punk (as well as hardcore starting to morph into crossover) as the dominant subgenre for disaffected youth, and how metal, especially thrash metal, began to roar into the mainstream. This was a year when Metallica gained significant exposure by touring with Ozzy Osbourne, and just a year after Motley Crue catapulted into the record-selling stratosphere. The "New Wave of British Heavy Metal" had established itself, transitioning from the "new" phenomenon to a major force in the arena circuit in the U.S. and beyond.   ### Was 1986 the Greatest Year of Thrash Metal?   #### The Rise of "The Big 4 of Thrash" **Metallica:**    - 1986 saw the release of Metallica's seminal album *Master of Puppets*, which is often hailed as one of the greatest metal albums of all time. The album's complex compositions, aggressive sound, and critical lyrics elevated thrash metal to new artistic heights. How did Ozzy's endorsement and the exposure from the tour help solidify thrash metal's presence in the mainstream?    - Discuss the broader impact of established metal acts like Ozzy Osbourne and Iron Maiden embracing and supporting the thrash metal movement.   **Motley Crue's Success:**    - Motley Crue's rise to fame after opening for Ozzy Osbourne in 1985 set a precedent for other metal bands. How did this success pave the way for thrash metal bands to achieve similar mainstream breakthroughs?    - In what ways did the success of glam metal acts like Motley Crue contrast with the rise of thrash metal, and how did these two subgenres coexist in the mid-1980s?   #### The New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) **Cementing the Legacy:**    - By 1986, the "New Wave of British Heavy Metal" (NWOBHM) had firmly established itself. Bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Def Leppard were now major arena acts. How did NWOBHM influence the development of thrash metal?    - Discuss the transition of NWOBHM bands from new and emerging acts to established, influential forces in the global metal scene.   **Cross-Pollination of Genres:**     - How did the NWOBHM's success in the early 1980s pave the way for the thrash metal bands of the mid-1980s?     - In what ways did NWOBHM and thrash metal bands influence each other musically and culturally?   ### Conclusion   1986 was indeed a landmark year for thrash metal, marked by iconic releases from "The Big 4" and significant mainstream breakthroughs. This year saw the decline of punk's dominance, as thrash metal emerged as the new voice of disaffected youth, blending punk's rebellious spirit with metal's technical prowess. As the "New Wave of British Heavy Metal" transitioned into established arena acts, thrash metal began to carve out its own place in the mainstream, setting the stage for its enduring influence on the music landscape. Who's up for some thrash metal?Megadeth is one of the founding bands of the thrash metal genre, and considered one of the "big four" of U.S. thrash metal (along with Anthrax, Metallica, and Slayer).  The heart of the band, primary songwriter, and sole constant member of the band throughout the years is Dave Mustaine.  The formation of the band is well known as a revenge effort on Mustaine's part.  He was fired from his role as lead guitarist of Metallica just prior to the recording of their debut album due to personal issues with James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, and due to drug abuse problems.  The name of the group was inspired by a political pamphlet from Alan Cranston that read "The arsenal of megadeath can't be rid no matter what the peace treaties come to."  Mustaine took the word out of that pamphlet and adjusted the spelling.Rust In Peace is the group's fourth studio album, released in late September but featured in November as it was gaining traction with fans at the time.  The album name came from a bumper sticker Mustaine saw that read, "May all your nuclear weapons rust in peace."  It was the first album to feature Marty Friedman on guitar and Nick Menza on drums.  Dave Mustaine is on guitars and lead vocals, and long time collaborator David Ellefson completes the quartet on bass and backing vocals. The album takes on a number of topics including religion, plitics, warfare, and personal issues Dave Mustaine was dealing with such as drug and alcohol addiction.  Mustaine explored a number of religious expressions over his life, and became a born again Christian after attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and focusing on his Christian faith.  Lynch brings us this hallmark album of thrash metal in this week's podcast Holy Wars...the Punishment DueThe opening track starts fast, shifts to a slower acoustic bridge, and finishes at a higher speed.  The lyrics discuss religious conflict with particular attention being paid to the situations in Israel and Northern Ireland.  The subtitle "the Punishment Due" is a reference to the Marvel comic book character called the Punisher.  It was the first single released from the album  Hangar 18The second single is the second track from the album, and was inspired by the Roswell alien conspiracy theory.  Hangar 18 is supposedly located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and was believed to be the location where an alien spacecraft and/or bodies were stored.Tornado of SoulsThis is a somewhat deeper cut since it was never released as a single, but it is considered a staple of the band's discography.  Marty Friedman's guitar solo in this piece is considered one of the best metal solos of all time, and one of the hardest to play.  Bassist David Ellefson co-wrote the lyrics, making it one of the few songs on the album not written by Mustane alone.Rust in Peace...PolarisThe concluding song reflects the album title.  It is written from the perspective of a Polaris nuclear weapon, and reflects the catastrophic consequences of nuclear warfare.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Shotgun by Junior Walker & The All Stars (from the motion picture “Misery”)This movie based on the Stephen King novel starring James Caan and Kathy Bates would win Bates an Oscar for Best Actress. STAFF PICKS:Full Circle by the Jeff Healey BandRob starts the staff pick with this blues-infused pick which is the lead track to the Jeff Healey Band's second album, "Hell to Pay."  Bobby Whitlock, a member of the supergroup Derek and the Dominos is playing the Hammond organ on this piece.  Jeff Healey, blind since an early age, was known for holding his guitar in his lap while playing.Vigilante Man by Hindu Love GodsWayne's staff pick is a bit of a super group.  Warren Zevon got together with the members of REM minus Michael Stipe to create this single album on a lark.  The group recorded old standards for the album, and this one was originally done by Woody Guthrie in 1940.  The song itslef is about hired thugs who would chase away migrants trying to escape the Dust Bowl by moving to California.Traveling Riverside Blues by Led ZeppelinBruce features another cover song, this one written by Robert Johnson in 1937.  Led Zeppelin recorded it in 1969, but it was not released until 1990, over ten years after "Fool in the Rain," their last single.  It hit number 7 on the Billboard Top Rock Tracks chart in November 1990.Blaze of Glory by Jon Bon JoviLynch finishes the staff picks with a rock ballad containing elements of country and western, written for the motion picture "Young Guns II."  It won the Golden Globe award for Best Original Song, and topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making it one of Bon Jovi's most successful solo hits. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Theme from the motion picture "Dances with Wolves" by the Royal Scots Dragoon GuardsThis cinematic piece accompanied the Kevin Costner Western which was out in 1990.
