In week four of the podcast Nick Gilchrist and Adam Olsen cover quite a bit of ground. They open the episode with a potential new theme song for the series and discuss a possible name other than just the current week. Listeners are encouraged to provide their ideas of possible names for the podcast. The labour disruption in School District #63 was finally sorted out last weekend and the kids are back in school. Adam provides a little context to the work that is still needed to ensure the district can compete to recruit and retain support staff. Both Nick and Adam went to the Barney Bentall & the Cariboo Express show at the Mary Winspear Centre. They discuss the quality of the music and the fundraising efforts. Over $45,000 was raised over three nights for the Saanich Peninsula Food Bank. In the 14 years the Cariboo Express has been doing the fundraising concerts they have raised over $2 million. Check out Matt Masters, Ridley Bent, Daniel Lapp, Dustin Bentall and Lorna Crozier. The conversation then turns to what a day, or week, is like in the legislature. Nick and Adam chat about question period and how partisan it is. In the end it's a long and winding conversation about the quality of our democracy and some ideas on how we can improve it. It is followed by a more brief discussion about the role of the Whip, how the BC Greens manage their workflow and keep everybody organized. This week the SENĆOŦEN word of the week is SĆÁÁNEW̱ (salmon). Adam and Nick also talk about the pronunciation of W̱SÁNEĆ (Saanich). Finally, Nick challenges Adam to name his top three favourite places to visit with his family in Saanich North and the Islands. They are SṈIDȻEȽ (Tod Inlet), ȽÁU,WELṈEW̱/John Dean Provincial Park and Helen Point on Mayne Island. This podcast is fueled by coffee. This week Adam opened a brand new bag of Winter beans from Level Ground Trading. Level Ground is a fair trade roasting company based in Central Saanich on the Saanich Peninsula. Dustin Bentall chats about hand making leather boots, his upcoming EP and touring with his famous father. We also hear a track from his upcoming EP. Dustin is set to play the Dream Cafe in Penticton on February 20. Then Eryn Kleyh from Vernon based She Hangs Brightly talks about the local music scene and their upcoming show opening for Chase the Bear on February 15 at Record City in Vernon. We also hear her favourite original track which is a different kind of love song (which is perhaps fitting for this Valentines Day week). Such lovely music played by such lovely humans. You should check it out.
Carla checks in with Barney Bentall as he is releasing his newest album after a 5 year hiatus! " The Drifter & The Preacher is the great paradox of a nomadic homebody, and a musical tour de force that could prove to be truly defining for a musician, a songwriter, a friend, a father, a brother, a husband and a son… coming face-to-face with a life lived. Lead single "The Miner," which was co-written and features his son Dustin Bentall, will be immediately available as a download to fans who pre-order the album on iTunes. Barney Bentall hit the music scene as the lead man for Barney Bentall and The Legendary Hearts back in 1988, with his self-titled debut CD soaring to the top of the charts, reaching platinum status in Canada and establishing Bentall as a must-see as a concert draw. The last couple of years have seen Barney Bentall translate his tremendous ability and deep introspection into his 10th studio album, which is an ambitious effort accomplished by one of the greatest storytellers of our time. "This was written for my father-in-law. Bar none, one of the most interesting and intelligent people I have met,” says Bentall. “He taught me many valuable things and gave me the best friend I have. He died with his boots on at the age of ninety-three. I wrote this at my ranch shortly after on a star-studded night.” While plenty of musicians have told stories of their family, Bentall possesses the emotion and interpretive skills to reveal an eclectic range that few could muster, and no more so than in the first single, “The Miner.” Says Bentall, “My son Dustin is a travelling musician. ‘The Miner’ marks the first time we wrote a song together… It started out as a story about Dustin’s grandfather and as a continuation of ‘The Drifter‘. Songs often have a mind of their own and… ‘Life goes where it goes’. When the dust had settled, we ended up with a story loosely based on a good friend of ours. He, much like the two of us, is driving down the road less travelled.” The Drifter & The Preacher also features a collaboration with Jim Cuddy of Blue Rodeo on "Won’t Change The World." Bentall says, “Sometimes a song is the only tool in the chest when you are trying to get back into someone’s favour. My good friend Jim Cuddy jumped in on this one. I swear, that boy gets behind an old tube microphone in a recording studio and puts on a clinic every time.” Inspiration set in not only from his family, but good friends, too. “The Ocean and You (A song for John Mann)” is a stirring song paying tribute to the Spirit Of The West singer. “Around the time we were forming the Legendary Hearts, we had this rustic studio in a millwork shop in the False Creek area in Vancouver. It was a sketchy part of town at the time, but heaven to us. Back in the day, that studio was our Clubhouse. We wrote and demoed ‘Something To Live For’ there, among many other songs. The founding members of Spirit Of The West -- Geoffrey Kelly and John Mann -- became lifelong friends of mine in the early ‘80s. We made their first record in that studio and had a wonderful party or two. Along with our partners/wives, it was an unforgettable and cherished circle. I wrote this song about John and his ongoing courageous fight with early onset Alzheimer’s. It is also about the equally courageous role of John’s partner Jill. God bless ya, Johnny.” Catch Barney Bentall live at the following Canadian tour stops: July 20 – Toronto, ON – Live on the Patio at Roy Thomson Hall July 21 - Mission, BC - Mission Folk Music Festival July 26 - 30 – Calgary, AB – Calgary Folk Music Festival August 4 – Minnedosa, MB – Rockin’ The Fields of Minnedosa Festival August 6 – Comox, BC – The Filberg Festival August 18 – Saskatoon, SK – Rock The River Festival August 19 – Wainwright, AB – Come By The Hills Music F --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/carlas-coffee-house/support

Today we chat with one of Winnipeg music’s most valuable players, Lloyd Peterson, about his upcoming star-studded tribute to Gordon Lightfoot. But that’s not all of the exciting shows coming up, we’ll see the return of Dustin Bentall & The Smokes and Neilfest; both are worthy of a celebratory preview.

It’s almost Canada Day, and while we always excel at playing great Canadian talent, it’s an especially good reason to go all-Canadian today. Take that, Can-Con regulations! We’re joined live in-studio by Jamie from The Honeysliders for some getting to know each other chat, and some live performances. Jaine and Jeremy also sat in on the party.

Out of town, so this show is pre-recorded, but we take our role as your informant seriously, so we’re here to let you know what’s going on, what’s important, and what you need to know. Tonight, we’re encouraging you to support CKUW FunDrive, go to some amazing upcoming shows, and play even more great Texas songwriters that we didn’t get to on last week’s show or Sunday’s TTBTGH special!

We’ve got some great shows coming up around town this week, so some previews are in order. Today would have been the late great Paul Quarrington’s birthday, so a tribute is also in order.

A sad day today, as the world said goodbye to Levon Helm. Few figures loom larger than The Band in our world, and Levon was a huge part of what we knew and loved and were so inspired by. It’s our duty to play a whole bunch of Levon Helm today. We also pay tribute to another departed favourite figure, Billy Cowsill, as we hear Dustin Bentall’s new tribute song. On a higher note, there are some great shows coming up in our town.

I love Winnipeg's music scene, but I've never been as excited about a new Winnipeg artist as I am these days about Del Barber. His new record is one of this year's finest, his live shows are second to none, and he's a heck of a swell guy, to boot. I'm super excited to welcome him on to the show today. After that, it almost doesn't matter, but there are some great shows coming up in Winnipeg, including The Bottle & The Truth, Joshua Cockerill, Tom Petty, and I'm headed off to Minneapolis to check out The Jayhawks!

This week we hear from a bunch of artists who made (and inspired) great music in 2009. We talked about what they're up to, but more importantly, we dedicated the show to our good friend Dietmar in Germany who is a tireless champion of the music that we love. He is an inspiration and a great help the the artists we talked to, including Leeroy Stagger, Evan Phillips, Romi Mayes, Dustin Bentall, Matt Epp, T. Nile, and more! Here's to you, Big D. Keep up the great work.

I can't believe that I thought last week was a busy one for concerts. The next two weeks are among the busiest I've ever seen in this town, so we've got a lot to fit in, including Leeroy Stagger, Eric Bogle, BOP Ensemble, Dustin Bentall, Brock Zeman, Two Hours Traffic, The Hold Steady, and next week's in-studio guest Amelia Curran! Now that's a busy show full of great music!

It's the beginning of our long, cold winter in Winnipeg as the first real snowfall arrived, so a few "snow" songs to lift our spirits. It's always a pleasure to welcome Murray Evans, leader of The Dust Poets who are doing a live recording at WECC this week. He called us from the snowy prairies to discuss all that's been going on. We played some songs from that talented band as well as their fabulous opener, Dustin Bentall. Lastly, a small set of "cat" songs for KK who lost her mind and proved that she's a cat person by welcoming "Neko" into her home.
