Jack Barksdale inspires me about the next generations of music made , and especially here in Texas. A 17 yr. old folk/Americana singer/songwriter Jack started performing original music at the age of nine and has already shared the stage with Wynonna Judd, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Junior Brown, John Fullbright, and Hayes . He's definitely an “old soul” that paints his way into your mind with his prolific lyrics. He's headlining the inaugural Renegade Revival Music Fest May 17th at the Georgetown Palace Theater. And proceeds benefit HAAM of Austin helping musicians with healthcare. Listen this week to our interview and you too will be inspired by this young Troubadour. This interview on Backstage Sonoma features host Steve Roby in conversation with renowned Country guitarist and singer Junior Brown. The discussion highlights Brown's illustrious career, marked by the release of 12 studio albums and multiple hits on the Billboard Country Singles Charts. It begins with an overview of Brown's musical journey, including influences from television and radio icons of the 50s and 60s, such as Ernest Tubb, and shows like "Hullabaloo" and "Shindig." Brown delves into the creation of his iconic instrument, the Git Steel double-neck guitar, explaining its practical utility in allowing him to switch between electric and steel guitar seamlessly during performances. The talk transitions into Brown's songwriting process, where he emphasizes the importance of titles and hooks in crafting his lyrics, typically before melodies. “When I'm asked about songwriting, a title will practically write the song if it's a good title, and every line of the song must support it. And if it doesn't, then you're getting away from it. You're drifting.” Host Roby draws attention to Brown's famous live rendition of "Highway Patrol," a song by Red Simpson. This performance showcases Brown's ability to personalize and revitalize classic tunes. Memorable performances, such as playing with rock and roll legend Bo Diddley, are recounted enthusiastically, underscoring significant milestones in Brown's career. The interview also touches on collaborative experiences with country music legends like Ray Price, George Jones, and Hank Thompson, hinting at these encounters' profound impact on Brown. Looking ahead, Brown shares his vision for an innovative album blending surf music with his trademark "twangy" sound, inspired by a painting he created called "Git Steel Surfer." The interview wraps up with mutual appreciation and well-wishes for Brown's future endeavors. Overall, the interview is a compelling blend of nostalgia, technical insights, and forward-looking creativity, offering fans a deeper appreciation of Junior Brown's multifaceted artistry. Junior Brown's California tour will make three stops in the North Bay, starting August 14 at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley. On Friday, August 16, he plays at the Uptown Theatre in Napa and the Raven Theatre in Healdsburg for a show on Saturday, August 17. Ticket info here.

Musicians Tori Lund and Blake English met while performing and engineering music at a Los Angeles area church. Today, the musical duo, Few Miles South, lives in rural Georgia and performs throughout the southeast. They've opened for the Kentucky Headhunters, Nikki Lane, Junior Brown, Brent Cobb, and many others. Blake is an incredible musician, demonstrating "Roy Nichols-style electric guitar licks" along with an excellent command of the acoustic guitar when the duo performs one of their bluegrass-style originals. A classically trained vocalist, Tori showcases her amazing singing ability - that fall somewhere between Patsy Cline and Trisha Yearwood - on recent cuts such as "On Down the Road," Outlaw," and their recent release "Doggone." I sat down with Tori and Blake at Black Bear Bakery in Grayton Beach, Florida, during a tour of 30a ventures in late June of 2022 to chat about their careers, living in rural Georgia with their two dogs, and life on the road.
This week we welcome, country music recording legend, Junior Brown! With his unique voice, more unique song writing, and even more unique double necked “Guit-Steel” guitar, there has absolutely never been ANYONE like Junior Brown. He's an American Original. Born in 1952 in Cottonwood, Arizona, Junior Brown showed an affinity for music at an early age when the family moved to a rural area of Indiana near Kirksville. In the following years, Junior began to experience Country music and remembers it as “growing up out of the ground like the crops – it was everywhere; coming out of cars, houses, gas stations and stores like the soundtrack of a story, but Country music programs on TV hadn't really come along much yet; not until the late fifties.” Discovering a guitar in his grandparent's attic, he spent the next several years woodshedding with records and the radio. Junior was also able to tap into music he couldn't hear at home which older, college aged kids were listening to. This was possible due to his father's employment at small campuses throughout the next decade as the family moved twice again. As a young boy he was able to experience the thrill of performing before live audiences, at parties, school functions even singing and playing guitar for five thousand Boy Scouts at an Andrews Air Force Base jamboree; then while still a teenager, getting the chance to sit in with Rock and Roll pioneer, Bo Diddley. Armed with this broad spectrum of influences, he began to develop a storehouse of musical chops. In the early nineties Brown and his band (including wife Tanya Rae) relocated to Texas to the active Austin music scene and landed a weekly gig at the Continental club. Having worked as a sideman for many of the Austin-based acts over the years, Junior was already well familiar with the town. His unique and entertaining combination of singing, songwriting, instrumental and production skills led to a seven record deal with Curb Records that began with “Twelve Shades of Brown” in 1993. He later released two albums on the TelArc label. There were several Grammy nods, a CMA (Country Music Association) award for “My Wife Thinks You're Dead”, movie and repeated TV appearances like Letterman, Conan, Saturday Night Live, Austin City Limits, SpongeBob, X Files, Dukes of Hazzard, Me Myself and Irene, Tresspass, Still Breathing, Blue Collar Comedy Tour 1 and 2, and more recently, Better Call Saul. And there were the Ad Campaigns; The Gap, Lee Jeans and Lipton Tea. As Junior became more well known, he began to collaborate on projects with some of his heroes. These include a duet with Ralph Stanley for which Junior received a Bluegrass Music Association Award (IBMA), a duet and video with Hank Thompson, as well as duets with video and record collaborations with the Beach Boys, George Jones, Leon McAuliffe, Ray Price, Leona Williams, Lynn Morris, Lloyd Green and Doc Watson. He even played guitar for Bob Wills' Texas Playboys in a radio commercial. Junior is currently finishing up recording on his latest album, “Deep In The Heart Of Me”. Release date is slated for Spring 2017. Junior's performance on the promotional song, “Better Call Saul” was recorded and released both as a video on AMC as well as a flexible 33 1/3rd vinyl record included in the show's box set from Season One. Junior, Tanya Rae and the band continue to tear up the highways and no doubt will be appearing in concert near you one of these days. Seeing Junior live is a definite must, so GUIT WITH IT 'cause he's AN AMERICAN ORIGINAL! For more information and tour dates, visit JuniorBrown.com.

This week we welcome Junior Brown!

#623 - Heidi Hyatt Heidi Hyatt is a special guest on The Paul Leslie Hour. It's a great honor to welcome Heidi Hyatt on The Paul Leslie Hour. She keeps the legacy of her husband the late Walter Hyatt going, through King Tears Music which she heads. She manages the catalog of Walter Hyatt and his influential Uncle Walt's Band. Uncle Walt's Band included Walter Hyatt, Champ Hood and David Ball. They made some truly exceptional recordings with unique songs and influenced some renowned artists: Marcia Ball, Lucinda Williams and some of our past guests: Lyle Lovett, Willis Alan Ramsey and Jimmie Dale Gilmore. Walter Hyatt sadly passed away in 1996 and the following year Austin City Limits broadcast a tribute featuring Lyle Lovett, Willis Alan Ramsey, David Ball, Champ Hood, Marcia Ball, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Junior Brown, David Halley, Allison Moorer and Shawn Colvin. On October 1, 2021 Omnivore Records is releasing the 11 songs from that ACL broadcast on CD and digital. Also included will be songs that didn't get aired and some previously unreleased Walter Hyatt recordings. The release is entitled "Mighty Fine: An Austin City Limits Tribute to Walter Hyatt." Today, my guest is Mathew Sturtevant, author, professional photographer, lecturer, and life adventurer. His photographs have graced the pages of the NY Times, Rolling Stone, Fortune magazine, and the Men's Journal. He is the author of two books. The first, The Sound of Austin, portraits and essays of the most intriguing and influential musicians who call Austin home, including stunning portraits of Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett, and my favorites, Junior Brown and Alejandro Escovedo. His latest book, The Topography of Fear, is both an external journey of traversing the continent on motorcycle over mostly gravel roads and off-road trails and an inward journey of facing his dragons of worry, doubt, fear, and panic attacks.Show Links:Purchase the Topography of Fear, by Mathew SturtevantMessage Mathew at 512-924-2385 or mathewsturtevant@gmail.com Check out photos of Mathew's adventure on Instagram @GiddyUPBikeAdventuresVisit us: littlebigvoices.comMessage Mark at mark@littlebigvoices.comFollow Little Big Voices Facebook and Instagram - thank you!Support the Little Big Voices Community! ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
Welcome to Tulsa Talks presented by Tulsa Regional Chamber. I'm your host Tim Landes. My guest on this episode has been providing the soundtrack for fun Sunday nights at the Colony for a decade. He's also played just about every stage in Tulsa during his nearly 30-year career. If there was a Mount Rushmore for modern Tulsa musicians Paul Benjaman's sunglassed smiling face would be there representing the new Tulsa Sound. Paul has toured all over the US and Europe, and played many music festivals, including representing our city and state's music scene numerous times at South By Southwest. Since 2010, he has been featured on multiple Horton Records releases, including a few studio albums. He also appears on the 2020 compilation “Back to Paradise: A Tulsa Tribute to Okie Music” where he covers JJ Cale, Don White, Steve Pryor and Teegarden & Van Winkle.” Paul learned from legendary guitarist Junior Brown and has worked with Steve Earle, Jamie Johnson, George Porter Junior of The Meters, John Densmore of The Doors, Kris Kristofferson, Rita Coolidge, Gary Busey and many more. There was also an appearance on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon as sideman for the T Bone Burnett produced Secret Sisters. When he's not playing live music, he's been helping others learn how to play guitar for 25 years through as an instructor at Guitar House of Tulsa. We featured a great article on the business earlier this year that is linked in the show notes. We discuss his musical origins, his long career in music and what has kept him in Tulsa all this time. We talk about the current state of the music scene and what he's got in the works and lots more. Following our conversation, you can hear his song, “Sneaker.” He is a really cool dude and a heck of a musician. I'm so happy we finally got the chance to talk. A reminder: you can always find weekly music listings every Monday at TulsaPeople.com. Also, be sure to subscribe to this podcast channel, so you can hear all our featured conversations and our twice-monthly mini episodes of About Town. OK let's get this going. This is Tulsa Talks with Paul Benjaman.

Wednesday-Saturday: Austin Love & Lightstream. Local music patron organization Black Fret, which has awarded $1.7 million in grants to Austin acts since 2014, has teamed up with historic venue Scholz Garten to present a five-day series featuring six hours of livestreamed performances each day. The events began on Tuesday and will wrap up on Saturday. Wednesday’s lineup will feature Gordy Quist & Evan Charles (4 p.m.), Tomar & the FCs (5 p.m.), Barbara Nesbitt (6 p.m.), Belle Sounds (7 p.m.), Sam Houston & Blk Odyssy (8 p.m.) and Alesia Lani (9 p.m.). Lineups for Thursday through Saturday are still TBA. blackfret.org. Donations: blackfret.org/make-a-donation — P.B. Wednesday: ComboPlate Booking Roster Party. Initially an event scheduled for Guero’s during SXSW, this annual benefit for Caritas of Austin’s food service programs is now set for livestreaming from several of the participating artists’ homes, including Matt the Electrician, Raina Rose, JM Stevens, Curtis McMurtry, Betty Soo, Nathan Hamilton and Beaver Nelson. Dozens of gift cards will be given to anyone who donates $50 or more. 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. facebook.com/comboplatebooking. Donations: southbysoupfest.org. — P.B. Wednesday: Ray Wylie Hubbard. Overshadowed by the world turning upside down late last week was the uniquely bizarre announcement that Wimberley’s own Ray Wylie Hubbard has signed to Nashville major Big Machine Records, home to Tim McGraw, Sugarland, Midland and others. Want proof? Tune into his livestream, which will air at 7 p.m. from, you guessed it, facebook.com/bigmachinerecords. — P.B. Wednesday: Little Mazarn. An Austin360 Artist of the Month in 2019, Little Mazarn is Lindsey Verrill, who plays banjo and sometimes upright bass, with Jeff Johnston, who plays the saw and sometimes bowed glockenspiel. The sound is as intriguing and enchanting as the instrumentation suggests, providing minimal but vital accompaniment for Verrill’s songs full of open space and natural wonder. 7 p.m. facebook.com/littlemazarn. Donations: See streaming site. — P.B. Friday: Emily Gimble. The official Texas State Musician for 2020, Emily followed in the footsteps of her legendary grandfather Johnny Gimble, the pioneering western swing fiddler who was named Texas State Musician in 2003. Gimble’s instrument of choice is piano, and she’s been a regular in local clubs for more than a decade, both on her own and during stints with Warren Hood and Asleep at the Wheel. In a social media post announcing the show, Gimble said she’s “planning on making this a regular thing until the storms clear.” 6 p.m. facebook.com/mlegimble. Donations: Venmo mlegimble; PayPal mlegimble@gmail.com — P.B. Friday-Thursday: Jackie Venson. No stranger to virtual jams, Austin’s guitar ace has been hosting online sessions for fans and followers in her JV Squad Facebook group for over a year. Now, with the coronavirus pandemic leaving much of the country homebound, she’s pledged to drop an internet jam session each night at 9:30 p.m. In addition to singing and playing guitar, she might hop on the piano or treat listeners to tunes from her new Jackie the Robot DJ set. “It’s all on the table now. I mean, last night’s show featured Jackie doing a rendition of ‘Keep On’ on the ukulele,” Venson’s manager (and fiance) Louie Carr said on Tuesday. facebook.com/jackievenson. Donations: paypal.me/jackievenson — D.S.S. Saturday: DJ Mel’s Living Room Dance Party. On March 16, when the South by Southwest Music Festival should have been kicking off but Austinites were hunkered down at home instead, DJ Mel took to the turntables to host the first edition of this virtual body-rock-a-thon. Thousands of viewers from around the country tuned in. Expecting to play for a handful of “Austin homies,” he was “shocked” by the response, he told the Statesman on Sunday afternoon while combing through the 17,000 comments on his Facebook post. He’s decided to make the Saturday night jam a regular affair. The party will kick off at 6 p.m. and run till 10, and to keep the (virtual) event family-friendly, he plans to use radio edits of all your favorite rap tunes. facebook.com/DJ-Mel-48330349120 — D.S.S. RELATED: Thousands tune in to DJ Mel’s virtual dance party Sunday: Jeff Plankenhorn. Not since Junior Brown’s 1990s breakthrough with his “guit-steel” has an Austin-based artist become so specifically associated with a custom-made instrument as Plankenhorn’s trusty “plank,” a Dobro-like contraption. His versatility as a musician has long made him in high demand with acts including Joe Ely and the Resentments, the latter outfit having welcomed him into their fold many years ago for Sunday night shows at the Saxon Pub. With those shows on hold for now amid the coronavirus pandemic, Plankenhorn has staked out some time this Sunday for a virtual show of his own. 8 p.m. facebook.com/events/194330805185995. The Wall Street Journal calls it a time for "contempt." Rep. DeSantis says today is the "last straw." Meanwhile, squeezed by the deadline, Democrats and Media have scattered away from the Dossier. Losing control of centralized narrative? Each Deep Stater now for himself? On the Run: CNN, Fusion GPS, Rep. Jim Himes and the New York Times. The Perfect Hoax. We examine new revelations from the Air Force Academy that their recent "racist graffiti" incident was all a hoax -- and was used by the Media to unfairly bash President Trump. Will CNN and the Washington Post soon apologize? We review a long list of Media Hoaxes on racial themes and offer insight into this particularly insidious form of modern propaganda. Why was James Comey hiding in the curtains of the White House? In spite of such skillful camouflage, President Trump spotted him: "Oh, and there's Jim!" Will the former FBI Director soon be coming out to try to take down Trump? We speculate on Comey's next moves, review the latest rounds of anonymous leaks, and puzzle over Robert Mueller's recent appointment as "special counsel" to investigate "Russian interference" in the 2016 elections. Speaking of Russia, we review the dark atmospherics of ongoing media propaganda, which offer expertly rendered hints of possible malfeasance -- but yet, even still, no tangible evidence. Might we be watching, in all this, a prolonged Film Noir without any actual Noir? Meanwhile, President Trump goes to Saudi Arabia, receives a warm welcome, and proceeds to challenge the Middle East on "Islamic extremism." Also, Anthony Weiner pleads guilty. Might go to jail. Democrat Chuck Schumer gets booed on the Inaugural platform, then proceeds to complain about it on CNN. The Davoisie in Switzerland contemplate their grim new reality with, perhaps, fewer bubbles in the Champagne. On the gloomy MSM Sunday Shows, Sen. The FBI unloads on Hillary Clinton over another holiday weekend. Did Hillary exacerbate concerns over her "health" by blaming a "concussion" for her FBI forgetfulness? And as we reach 274 days without a Hillary Press Conference, a Clinton Campaign spokesman steps in to offer assurances that, if she's elected, "Hillary Clinton will hold press conferences." What is going on here? Is the uniformly pro-Hillary media starting to show frustration with their candidate? Plus, a review of the latest polling numbers, which look very good for Donald Trump. With Listener Calls and Labor Day Music via Bill Monroe, Junior Brown, Steve Miller, CCR and the Rev. Al Green.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Bill Clinton meets in private with Attorney General Loretta Lynch on the "tarmac" in Phoenix. So what were they talking about? Golf and Grandchildren? Yoga, perhaps? With the FBI investigation into the Clintons now reaching critical mass, the "appearance of impropriety" herein has cast a shadow over the entire Democratic Party. As Carl Bernstein calls upon Lynch to "recuse" herself from overseeing the investigation, we listen to Donna Brazile -- and Hillary Clinton herself -- attempt to defend the indefensible. And thus we ask: With her candidacy at stake, how ultimately talented is Hillary as a retail politician? Is it for good reason that the American people do not seem to "trust" her? Plus, we describe the speeches of Donald Trump and Sarah Palin at this weekend's Western Conservative Summit, and we offer patriotic vignettes from Colorado farm country.
