Singapore stocks sold off as Asian markets tumbled this morning, following US President Donald Trump’s tariff announcement last Wednesday. The Straits Times Index plunged by 8.5 percent, falling below 3,500 points. This marked the largest intraday decline since the STI crashed 9 percent during the global financial crisis in 2008. Meanwhile, Singapore REITs recorded net institutional inflows in March, rising 1.4% this year. How would the tariff shock unfold in the year ahead? What should investors do? And are Singapore REITs truly a defensive asset class in this uncertain environment? On Market View, Willie Keng speaks with David Kuo, Co-founder, The Smart Investor to find out more. Curating Culture: Curator Emily Henderson on Indigenous Sovereignty in the Arts

Artalogue

Currently based in Guelph, Ontario, Emily Laurent Henderson is a Kalaaleq (Greenlandic Inuk) and Settler curator and writer. A 2020 University of British Columbia graduate in Anthropology, Emily's work and writing centres Inuit and Indigenous self-determination in the arts. Her writing has appeared in titles such as the Inuit Art Quarterly, Azure, Studio Magazine, and more. Her debut collection of poetry, "Hold Steady my Vision", was published in 2024 by Publication Studio Guelph. When Emily Henderson got her first museum job—working in a gift shop—she thought it was the first step towards her dream of being a museum curator. And she was right - only her dream was so much closer to being realised than she expected. She thought it might take decades, but six years later, she's an Associate Curator of Indigenous Art at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection with a once in a lifetime exhibition opening tomorrow."I applied for jobs I was in no way qualified for," Emily laughs, revealing her unconventional early career strategy. Her fearless approach opened doors at the Inuit Art Quarterly, Indigenous Curatorial Collective, and Art Gallery of Ontario before landing at the McMichael, where she's currently preparing to open "Worlds on Paper," an exhibition featuring 215 drawings by 40 Kinngait (formerly Cape Dorset) artists. The groundbreaking show explores how Inuit artists documented their rapidly changing world between 1959-1990—a period of profound transition as communities were moved from semi-nomadic existence to permanent settlements. What makes this exhibition possible is the recent digitisation of all 90,000 drawings, creating unprecedented access to works that were often filtered out by Southern tastes and editorial committees. Henderson shares how Indigenous sovereignty in the arts (giving Indigenous people control over their own representation) is the "crux" of everything she does. She elaborates on what Indigenous sovereignty can look like in institutions that were built to further colonize. For aspiring curators, Emily offers practical wisdom: apply widely regardless of qualifications, seek publishing opportunities, and embrace mentorship. Her journey proves there's no single path to curatorial work—just the courage to start somewhere and grow through continuous learning. Bruce Springsteen once said that the secret to good songwriting was striking a balance between the personal and the universal: Get specific with people and locations first before shading in the rest with the kinds of generalities that make your listener relate, and hopefully, feel something. Craig Finn -- leader of the rough-and-ready, Grammy-nominated outfit The Hold Steady -- has subscribed to this philosophy in spades, garnering a cult-like fandom over 20+ years. On critically-acclaimed albums like Separation Sunday and Boys & Girls In America, the band has wheeled-and-dealed jaw-dropping tales of overdoses, arrests, confessional debauchery, and post-party pathos on par with any binge-worthy crime drama. Yet, despite those circumstances, the most fervent fans of The Hold Steady often connect most with the undying optimism that lies within Finn's brash and bewildered characters -- many of which show up on multiple tracks. Recorded in front of a live audience at Pinwheel Records in Chicago, Craig spotlights a lyrical trick he learned from Paul Simon, the babysitter who schooled him on Led Zeppelin, and the intriguing plot of his next solo album, due in spring. Visit craigfinn.net and theholdsteady.net for news, social media, tour dates and more. Today's episode is on "Listening to Kenny G", a 2021 film about the saxophone colossus, directed by Penny Lane. Our guest today is Franz Nicolay, multi-instrumentalist and composer, who records his own music and also is known from bands such as The Hold Steady. Franz' fascinating new book, Band People, features interviews with musicians who have made a career in the music industry, often outside of the spotlight. Listening to Kenny G was released under HBO's "Music Box" series, which may no longer be a thing? The G man himself sat for extensive interviews and the film dispassionately explores what makes his music both appealing and controversial to audiences and music fans around the world. It's a rich text, and one could view Kenny as either the hero or villain of the movie. Plus: Is Kenny G like Phish? Co-host Andy Keatts was unavailable for this episode, so he didn't get a chance to weigh in on this important topic, but we bat it around a bit anyway. Hey Dirtbags! This week's episode of A Dirtbag's Guide to Life On The Road is a really special one. I got to sit down with Craig Finn of The Hold Steady a while back and talk about his life in music. From his first guitar lessons and being turned on to independent record stores, to what it takes to make a band like The Hold Steady be able to exist for 20+ years. I even got to deep dive into his process of writing the song that first pulled me into his songwriting and stories, Magic Marker. It was a weird time in my life when I first heard that song, and I was really drawn to the hyper detailed story he was able to create within such a short format of a song.I remember listening to Magic Marker over and over and thinking “man, I'd really like to talk to Craig about that song.” Life being the unpredictably poetic thing that it is, a few years later I was asked to guitar tech for them on some shows, and I eventually worked up the nerve to ask Craig to come on the podcast. He was enthusiastic at the idea and I'm super grateful for that. I'm also really grateful for the times I've been able to work with The Hold Steady and see how much fun they all have every single time they are on stage. It's inspiring, and I suggest you see The Hold Steady, or Craig Finn live as soon as you have the chance. Get tickets to see The Hold Steady Live! Listen to The Hold Steady! A uniquely talented and affable human with a terrific sense of humor, Ryan simply has a generous spirit and caring soul, and that 100% comes through in this super fun interview.Little did I know that Ryan is the ultimate Roadcase guest, full of fun quips — both self-deprecating and directed happily at me — and we totally vibe out on all things, and I'm here for that!! Barnstar!, Boston's premiere kinda bluegrass and definitely bombastic band, has released their new album Furious Kindness and we're #blessed to welcome Mark Erelli and Zachariah Hickman to the pod. Originally a fun side hustle and bluegrass vehicle for Zack, the group, which also includes Charlie Rose and Taylor and Jake Armerding, started very casually performing at the legendary local Cantab Lounge. Zack accurately likens the vibe of the place to a basement Star Wars Cantina full of bluegrass bands. In between their main gigs with performers like Josh Ritter and Lori McKenna and solo careers, Barnstar! has cultivated an explosive live performance filled with energy and emotional expression leaving concert attendees cheering and crying along. Included in their repertoire are some of the finest music covers including many that you'd never expect to see on a kind of bluegrass band album, like The Hold Steady, Patty Griffin, Elliott Smith and Elizabeth & The Catapult. We talk about what it's like to bring a cover song to the band to learn as well as co-writing with friends like Dinty Child and Chuck Prophet. We'd be remiss if we did not address the alien-like quality of Mark Erelli's singing voice and learn that it is because of his bestie Zack and Barnstar! that he can sing like this. Now he finds himself performing vocal warm-ups before hitting the stage with the guys. Not something he ever thought he'd do. All members of Barnstar! contribute and sing to the new album Furious Kindness, an album that just wants to shout in your face about how awesome you really are.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknewsHelp produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/Interested in sponsoring us?
