Darden Smith is amazing! Songwriter, artist, novelist and so much more. Here's part one of the conversation with Darden. Did you know Nashville labels were battling to have Darden sign with them.......listen.
There's never been a period in our human experience without art, self-expression and sensory communication. Our earliest ancestors inherently understood the value of music, dance, and storytelling as important and powerful expressions of communication and empathy. Today, the scientific and medical communities are increasingly understanding the power of art in individual and public health, and the potential to heal trauma, manage stress, and improve health and wellbeing. In this moving and art-filled two-part episode, author and science-of-arts expert Susan Magsamen and singer/songwriter Darden Smith share the research and evidence and their experience of how art changes our bodies, brains, hearts, and behaviors for the better.

In Part II, musician Darden Smith describes his observations and process of collaborative songwriting, in which he brings his knowledge of the craft to the stories and experiences of people from all walks of life to co-create songs that heal. Together with veterans, teenagers experiencing homelessness, and others, he's written songs that capture humanity's universal truths and developed a powerful approach for helping identify, express, and process difficult emotions. During the pandemic, he launched Frontline Songs to bring the practice of songwriting to frontline healthcare teams and in this episode, we experience what it's like being in a collaborative songwriting workshop.

A video-audio rendition of this podcast is available on my Youtube channel here: UCVVqtfTwNVg590TbfndMR_Q Today's guest is bassist Graham Maby. His association with British musician Joe Jackson began in 1973 when they became members of a local Portsmouth cover band. Five years later Jackson's solo recording career took off, with Graham's bass playing front and center on albums like Look Sharp! and I'm the Man. Jackson's biggest-selling album came in 1982, with the million-selling Night and Day. The success of the album firmly established Jackson as an artist and Maby's reputation as a versatile bass player. Since 1983, Graham has lived in the USA. During that time, as well as working on numerous albums and tours with Jackson, he has recorded and performed live with many different artists, among them: Marshall Crenshaw, Natalie Merchant, Jon Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, Joan Baez, Ian Hunter, Freedy Johnston, They Might Be Giants, Henry Lee Summer, the Silos, Graham Parker, Darden Smith, Dar Williams, Garland Jeffreys, Joy Askew, and Regina Spektor. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/brian-doherty8/support
Graham Maby was born on September 1, 1952 and grew up in the small English south coast town of Gosport, near Portsmouth. His musical “awakening” happened at age ten when he heard the Beatles' first single “Love Me Do” on the radio. Six years later he taught himself to play guitar, then bass. Noel catches up with Darden Smith. The singer-songwriter is out with his latest project, Western Skies. This multi-media collection includes a new album and a book of photography, essays and song lyrics. Darden has released 16 studio albums. The Texas native has founded many songwriting projects including The Be An Artist Program and SongwritingWith:Soldiers.
DARDEN SMITH Open and empty. That's how Darden Smith describes the west Texas landscape that inspired his wildly creative new multi-media project, Western Skies. Comprising a new studio record, a book of photography, lyrics, and essays, and an accompanying album of readings set to music, the collection is an immersive journey through a world both real and imagined, a place of mystery and mythology, possibility and longing. Like his photographs, Smith's writing is steeped in isolation, though rarely lonely; timeless, yet acutely aware of the hours and minutes whizzing by like mileposts on the highway. The songs on Western Skies are spare and deliberate, often marked by a distinct sense of motion and transience, and the performances are similarly raw and intimate, reflecting the desolate beauty of the region that so captured Smith's imagination as he crisscrossed it time and again throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.Over the course of his remarkable three-and-a-half decade career, Smith has released 15 critically lauded studio albums, landed singles on both the country and pop charts (including the Top 10 hit “Loving Arms”), penned a symphony, scored works for theater and dance, published a widely celebrated book on creativity, exhibited works of visual art, and co-founded the non-profit SongwritingWith:Soldiers program, which pairs veterans with musicians in order to tap into the transformational possibilities of collaborative songwriting. (During the pandemic, the Austin-based artist also helped launch Frontline Songs, which connected musicians and healthcare workers to support them in telling their stories and healing their trauma.) The Daily News hailed Smith as “one of the most respected American musicians working today,” while the Austin Chronicle dubbed him a “master song craftsman,” and AllMusic called him “a singer-songwriter blessed with an uncommon degree of intelligence, depth, and compassion.”

On this episode of Analog Smile, Sherry speaks with Simon Wells from Simon and The Astronauts featuring Rachel Haden. Simon And The Astronauts really is a fascinating project. Simon Wells is a writer who had attended several of Boo Hewerdine's song-writing workshops. Over the course of a year together Simon and Boo have made this superb album. Enlisting such talents as Karine Polwart, Darden Smith, Findlay Napier, Ben Hewerdine and Chris Pepper they worked in a very unusual way. Simon would bring a lyrical concept to the studio and together with these musicians would spontaneously write and record each track. Simon himself is a fine performance poet and also leads three of the tracks. There is spontaneity to this album that means you hear new music at the moment of its creation. Stylistically it moves between dream-pop, indie-electronica, delicate acoustics and edgy poetry. It was a chance for these musicians to work outside their comfort zones. Simon's vision makes it all hang together in a deeply cohesive way. We chat about Simon and The Astronauts, Elvis Costello, and much more! “Western Skies” Darden Smith's new project Western Skies is an ambitious and comprehensive multi-media affair that's dedicated to the mythology and history of West Texas—it's a new album, a book of essays, photography, spoken word pieces, song lyrics, a set of videos—this thing is a monster of a release. Influenced by Neil Young, Guy Clark and John Prine, the Texas-born Darden Smith's body of work dates all the way back to 1986. Since then, he's put out a series of albums that consistently demonstrate he's one of the best songwriters out there. From Little Victories to Deep Fantastic Blue to Everything to Western Skies, there hasn't ever been a dip in quality for Mr. Smith. In addition to being an artist, Smith also founded the Be An Artist Program in 2003. The program's mission statement is to bring arts and creativity into educational settings. His collaborative songwriting work has found him working with homeless young adults, Botswana residents suffering from HIV and both Israeli and Palestinian groups. In 2012 he founded Songwriting With Soldiers along with Mary Judd. The group's weekend retreats finds professional musicians paring with veterans and active duty service members sharing stories of both combat and re-entry into civilian life and turning those stories into songs. Speaking of songs, Western Skies is full of them and they shimmer and roll with melodic ease. Smith has never sounded better and the songs here are informed by memory, regret and the landscape of desire. Its beautiful work. www.dardensmith.com www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

This conversation was recorded in August, 2021 at the time of the US was pulling troops out of Afghanistan. HBN released this relevant content on all of our minds that week: Your Sacrifice Matters (8/23/21)Today we dive into Nate's work and experiences at home. What moved him towards the military and about what he continues to do for his own form of service. Looking backwards, Nate's story seems to fit together at every turn. But what's behind the scenes is always seeing opportunity, along with grit and dedication at every step, not to mention learning from the natives whether in the locker room with the Seahawks, shoulder to shoulder with the Afghans, or on the movie set learning how to tell the stories we need to know about. Nate continues to serve in many ways, and cofounded Merging Vets And Players (MVP) along with partner Jay Glazer, has acted in several roles, and is now in the process of releasing the movie he directed that outlines the genesis of MVP and what it means, about the bonds shared and finding belonging and meaning for new chapters for Athletes, Special Operators and all veterans returning home to civilian life. Here is the full conversation we had at our Home Base Center of Excellence following a memorable Red Sox game the night before, where Nate's friend and supporter of MVP First baseman Kyle Schwarber took the plate at Fenway. It's been about two months since, and although the Sox didn't make it to the end this year, I do remember Kyle's grand slam during the playoffs 2 weeks ago and thought of how Nate in California was feeling the same energy of that stadium as everyone else. Thanks to Green Beret Nate Boyer for your service, and your ongoing efforts to serve others. We'd like to dedicate these conversations with Nate to his friend and colleague Master Sergeant Brad Keys who still guides Nate to this day, and through Nate he gives that guidance and support to many others. On November 11, 2021 join us at WCVB/ABC Boston Televent if local and / or text to give: HBDONATE to 617-582-2098The number to call in for the phone bank day-of on November 11, 2021: (866)-615-8387______________If you are your loved one is experiencing any emotional, mental health struggles, you are not alone and please contact Home Base 617-724-5202, or www.homebase.org SUBSCRIBE to Home Base NationTo learn more and connect with us at Home Base Nation:www.homebase.org/homebasenationTwitter,Facebook,Instagram, LinkedInHome Base Nation Team: Steve Monaco, Maureen Roderick, Laurie Gallagher, Karianne Kraus, Lucy Little, and COO Michael Allard and Brigadier General Jack HammondProducer and Host: Dr. Ron HirschbergAssistant Producer, Editor: Lucy LittleMusic texture and sound design by: Lucy LittleTheme music: The Butler Frogs"Soldier on" was co-written by Nate Boyer and Darden Smith, with the program Songwriting With SoldiersHome Base Nation is the official podcast of Home Base Program for Veterans and Military Families, a partnership of the Massachusetts General Hospital and the Red Sox Foundation. The views expressed by guests to the Home Base Nation podcast are their own and their appearance on the program does not imply an endorsement of them or any entity they represent. Thank You Nate Boyer for your service and missions that began even before joining the military, and thanks for your advocacy for your fellow veterans and those who continue to need a voice in Afghanistan. To every human that fought for the people of Afghanistan. Escuchar audio
For years I have been a huge fan of the organization SongwritingWith:Soldiers / SW:S and the depth, power and beauty of what they produce. SongwritingWith:Soldiers holds weekend retreats across the U.S. for veterans from all conflicts. Since 2012, we have connected with hundreds of veterans and military families, creating a safe and inspiring environment to share their experiences and write songs with professional songwriters. These songs have been recorded and streamed across the internet, reaching and connecting more veterans and raising civilian awareness of the challenges the military community faces. So… you can only imagine how BEYOND thrilled and honored to have the opportunity to have a conversation with the program director and co-founder Mary Judd. She is a brilliant and down to earth woman, visionary, and trailblazer. Mary is a master at creating collaborative programs that inspire connections and highlight individual and community strengths. When witnessing Darden Smith write a song with a veteran, she was compelled to put her skills to work in creating the SongwritingWith:Soldiers program. With vast experience in Positive Psychology, educational programming and organizational communications, Mary helps SW:S create the most effective and meaningful experiences for everyone involved. Her creative reach is reflected in her client list which includes New York State Department of Economic Development (I LOVE NY); MentorCoach training programs; VIA Institute on Character; Indian Ladder Farms: The Mayerson Academy, The HAPPY Movie; Discovery Retreats, and more. She has studied Positive Psychology with leading researchers from around the world, is an international workshop presenter on the subject and was a discussion facilitator at a United Nations meeting on Happiness and Well-Being. She serves on the editorial board for the India Journal of Positive Psychology and PsyInsight magazine. Mary co-founded The Barn School, an award-winning sustainable agriculture camp that raises funds for family farms and Heifer International®. She earned coaching certifications from Dr. Martin Seligman of the University of Pennsylvania, MentorCoach and others. She has a B.S. in Organizational Communications from the University of Texas at Austin and teaching certifications in Speech, English and Spanish. MARY JUDD Co-Founder/Program Director Mary joined me from her home in New York and, as you can imagine, is incredibly busy. I am super grateful for her generosity of time to discuss this treasure of a program that she has poured her heart and soul into. I want to whole world to know about the power and beauty of this program and that post traumatic healing does exist Make sure you listen to the song at the end of this episode to get a full understanding of the results of this program. It is one of Mary’s favorite’s. The song Strumming hand was written by Maia Sharp and Veteran John Cameron at a performed by Maia Sharp. Retired Army SSG Travis Mills is simply a leader. On the football or baseball field in his home town of Vassar, Michigan, on patrol with his squad in Afghanistan, or on the floors of Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Travis is “that guy” no matter the situation. He’ll pull you up and show you what is possible, while at the same time will tell you the road is not without bumps and turns. He’s that guy who’ll make you laugh, and will also teach you to take yourself a little less seriously. And his “Never give up - Never quit” mantra isn’t just something he came up with after an IED took away his four limbs while on his combat mission overseas, it seems to have followed him around his whole life. That day was April 10, 2012, on deployment for his third tour in Afghanistan when he was critically injured upon placing his back pack on the ground, triggering the blast. The Purple Heart and Bronze Star recipient would become one of only five surviving quadruple amputees to date during the post-9/11 conflcts. After reading his New York Times Bestseller Tough As They Come, and watching the award winning documentary Travis – A Soldier’s Story, you won’t give up and you won’t quit whatever you are doing or struggling with. Travis has a magnetism about him, and has recruited a staff for a thriving foundation that has become more like a family than an organization. The Travis Mills Foundation hosts all-inclusive and all-expenses paid veteran family retreats in Maine for servicemembers who have sustained injury on or off the battlefield. This is the place to bond with brothers, sisters and families, do some yoga, take out an adaptive kayak, navigate the ropes course, fish, cook, cross-country ski, cycle and hike. Our high school history books highlight patriots like Paul Revere and Samuel Adams during the time of the American Revolution. However, a foundation was being built just before this time through the actions of a small group in Boston on March 5th, 1770. The evening’s events were later known as the Boston Massacre, and we remember eleven people shot, including the death of five men who led a call to freedom from British control. One of these men was a former slave named Crispus Attucks, who was not only the first to take a bullet, he would be the first in our country to die for the American Revolution.African Americans have served our country from its inception, and in all wars. As segregation had lifted during the time of the Vietnam War, progress was made. Yet to this day the brotherhood of soldiers in general shows more of a color-blind culture than the country itself.Following our conversation, join us for a Diner Debrief, a time to meet at the local diner or coffee shop and chat. As our military brothers and sisters make the transition home to a nation that may genuinely support them, one’s sense of purpose is not always easy to find. As a country, we see that depression, post-traumatic stress or anxiety challenge many service members. At the same time, we see that barriers to thriving at home are not necessarily due to mental illness, rather to transitioning back to daily life. The irony is common: Community and connection can be found overseas within a unique culture of bonds, yet at times so hard to accomplish right in our own back yards. To dial in and learn more on service and the human connection, we sat with acclaimed author and director Sebastian Junger (The Perfect Storm, War, A Death In Belmont). As a combat journalist and work at ABC News and Vanity Fair, Sebastian is a non-military anthropologist who has much to teach us through personal and extensive engagements with our service members overseas. If there is one book you should read before or after listening to this episode, it is Sebastian's Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging, and while you are at it, see the documentary Restrepo. We enjoyed our visit and conversation with Sebastian at his home in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Greeted by Daisy, the docile Junger dog, we climbed to the second floor of an A-frame annex, with books dating back centuries lining the wall. Sebastian is genuine and easy going, and it was a true pleasure to talk with him, and take some notes...Following the conversation, join us for our first Diner Debrief, a time to meet at the local diner or coffee shop and chat. "Getting in the habit of noticing is what is essential to actually being an artist. You have to first off get in the habit seeing things and noticing. It's not only visually seeing, it’s hearing, and listening, and tasting and using your senses. Wake up and think, what am I going to notice today, because the work is around you. The input that you need to do the work, there is no shortage of that, if you are paying attention." Darden Smith (http://www.dardensmith.com) is a Texas born singer/songwriter who just released his first book. The Habit of Noticing is an honest and poetic journey through Darden’s life as an artist, what he has learned so far, and the many interesting people that have crossed his path. His writings are artfully juxtaposed with his own drawings and photographs. Reading the book while listening Darden’s voice and the musical score that accompanies it was really powerful and moving for me. His vulnerability is evident and appreciated and his artistic struggles relatable. Sitting down to talk in person we spoke about his life as an artist and how he got to where he is today along with many other questions. How do you gain access to something bigger than yourself and with more depth? What’s it like to write songs with kids, homeless teenagers, and soldiers? How do you embrace everything even the parts of life that are hard? Have a listen and see if we found any answers. And please have a look or listen to his book! Join us this Wednesday as we speak with Darden Smith
In our conversation with Austin’s Darden Smith last year, we covered some of the history of Americana. Recently Ronnie was on a call with Mr. Smith who highly recommended getting in touch with Rob Bleetstein - who we shall learn had co-coined the term Americana in the 90s. Rob has been a connoisseur of several genres of music since he was a kid, and they all share one common thread: Culture. Rob entered the radio world with guns blazing, becoming an archivist for New Riders of the Purple Sage / NRPS. In recent years he became producer of Pearl Jam Radio while sharing his ongoing expertise as host of Grateful Dead Radio, both on SiriusXM. Ronnie mentioned to his brother-in-law Cory that Mr. Bleetstein would be a guest on ATB, and Cory, being a Pearl Jam super-fan, simply stated, “Wow, you’re going to talk to The Rob.” That certainly set our expectations high for this conversation. Rob highlighted his love for the live experience, and how the common thread of music fandom culture transcends genres. He also gave us a perspective on just how important Pearl Jam fans are to the musicians and how the fans in return emulate their missions and causes.
We recently published an episode with singer-songwriter Mary Gauthier and talked about her inspiring work with the organization Songwriting with Soldiers. We wanted to create a separate episode with the conversation we had afterwards with a US Marine, veteran Bill Auger, who shared the story of his first songwriting experience on the retreat with professional songwriter Darden Smith, and how the experience and the songs changed his life for the better. Bill is joined by Songwriting with Soldiers co-founder Mary Judd, who talks about the genesis, growth and unique aspects of their mission. Song List: All songs by Mary Gauthier from the album Rifles and Rosary Beads Available at www.marygauthier.com Song 1: Soldering On Song 2: Rifles and Rosary Beads
Mary Gauthier didn't pick up a guitar until later in life, and although finding success as a Boston restaurateur, certain events forced a change. Ten albums later she continues to tell stories of her past, her own healing, and the search for honesty and truth. Mary has lived through some challenging experiences and now she shares the songwriting pen and paper with US Veterans to tell their own stories through the Songwriting With:Soldiers program. We talked with Mary prior to her acoustic show at Boston’s brand new City Winery. Afterwards we were fortunate and thankful to meet with a US Marine, veteran Bill Auger, who shared the story of his first songwriting experience with professional songwriter Darden Smith, and how the experience and the songs changed his life for the better. Bill is joined by Songwriting With:Soldiers co-founder Mary Judd, who talks about the genesis, growth and unique aspects of their mission. Song List: All songs off the Rifles and Rosary Beads album Song 1: Soldering On Song 2: Bullet Holes in the Sky Song 3: Rifles and Rosary Beads
Darden Smith is a veteran songwriter with 15 albums under his belt, with frequent touring, writing and performing his mix of Americana, country and rock. In addition to this he has an amazing project called SongwritingWith:Soldiers that pairs professional songwriters, in retreat settings, with active duty and veteran military members to write songs based on their experiences of combat and returning home.

Darden Smith is a singer songwriter who resides in Austin, TX. Smith has made music for over 30 years and just released his 15th album titled, Everything. Smith’s career evolved in unexpected directions when he began to explore the creative potential in what he calls “writing songs with people that don’t write songs.” Collaborations with homeless youth to HIV affected villagers in South Africa led to the founding of his latest project Songwriting with:Soldiers, a program that brings professional songwriters together with wounded veterans to write songs about combat and the return home. Smith opens up about how much he gets out of these retreats and talks through a recent session. Smith also performs a song written with a soldier as well as a track of his new record.

Thirteen albums into a storied career as a singer-songwriter, Darden Smith is also a humanitarian. I'd already been familiar with his music for some time and was intrigued to hear about his non-profit SongwritingWith:Soldiers at the 14th Street Apple Store in Manhattan. The purpose of SW:S is to connect professional songwriters with active duty and veteran military members to write songs from their combat stories and the experience of returning home. Darden's emotions for the soldiers was palpable as he spoke of several success stories that happened during the program's songwriting retreats. His latest album, 2013's Love Calling, is a gorgeous organic tone poem on par with Tracy Chapman's New Beginning album. Love Calling includes my favorite track, the haunting "Baltimore", which I must confess I play on repeat. Our conversation explores his career and songwriting process plus the inception of SW:S.
