Dallas Green is a Canadian musician and songwriter and the frontman of City and Colour and a founding member of Alexisonfire. City and Colour's seventh studio album, "The Love Still Held Me Near", is set for release on March 31st, 2023.
EPISODE 40 - City and Colour, Dallas Green from my Home Town - Sleeping Sickness and Underground - External Version Dallas Michael John Albert Green (born September 29, 1980) is a Canadian musician, singer, songwriter and record producer who records under the name City and Colour. He is also known for his contributions as a singer, rhythm guitarist and songwriter for the post-hardcore band Alexisonfire. In 2005, he debuted his first full-length album, Sometimes, which achieved platinum certification in 2006. City and Colour began performing in small intimate venues between Alexisonfire tours.[3] The name City and Colour comes from his own name: Dallas, a city, and Green, a colour. His reasoning for the name was that he felt uneasy "putting the album out under the name Dallas Green "Sleeping Sickness" is the second single from City and Colour's second album, Bring Me Your Love. The song features vocals from Gord Downie, the lead singer of The Tragically Hip. The single was certified Platinum in Canada on December 10, 2018 Prolific singer-songwriter Dallas Green has announced the latest album in his City and Colour catalogue, previewed by new single "Underground." The Love Still Held Me Near arrives on March 31 via Still Records, an imprint of Dine Alone. The sixth album follows 2019's A Pill for Loneliness. The 12-track record was co-produced by Green and longtime collaborator Matt Kelly, chronicling the most difficult period of the artist's life — including the tragic death of his best friend in 2019, as eulogized in previous single "Meant to Be." "The Love Still Held Me Near was born out of unimaginable loss and the subsequent journey through the grief and heartache that followed," Green said in a press release. "It's about digging deep down into yourself and attempting to unearth hope and light in the things that can comfort you through those times. For me that has always been writing and recording music, so that's exactly what I did." Life-affirming new single "Underground" sees the singer-songwriter's soulful exploration of gratitude through. "Like a great Canadian darkness, I will cover you," he sings, expressing his desire to protect his loved ones after suffering a great loss. The tripods back again, check it to wreck it, let's begin. Okay now that I've gotten that out of my system, let's get to it. It's just another mundane Monday so you know what that means. Another fan-freaking-tastic episode to brighten up your dreary work day. This week we're joined by Aaron from the "I HAD to say it" podcast. If you're just tuning in for the first time, first of all, thank you, but beyond that, we do a weekly rotation of brand-new and interesting guests that round out the tripod and fill our third chair. We also do a rotation of different series, and this happens to be one of them. Kyle was up in the rotation for choosing an album for us to dig into, and he did just that. This week we're keeping it Canadian with singer/songwriter/guitar player Dallas Green. If that name doesn't sound familiar straight away, perhaps you're more familiar with his stage name "City And Colour". Yeah, now you're with us, I thought that might help. City And Colour is not only brilliant as far as band names go, but it also started as Dallas Green's side project. While singing and playing guitar for the post-hardcore band Alexisonfire, Dallas decided to take a completely different direction, and in November of 2005, City And Colour took the industry by storm when "Sometimes" was officially released due to high demand. Up until this time, most of what made up the album was only ever heard at live shows and was downloaded via P2P sharing programs. To say that the official release was met with critical acclaim would be an understatement and by 2006 it was certified Gold in Canada. Push forward to 2007, and it would win a Juno Award for "Alternative Album Of The Year". In early 2009, the album was re-released and finally available in physical form for the first time in the US. We often talk about monster debut records here on the podcast, and I think we can all agree that this definitely fits into that category. Join us as we take a dip into this not-so-little side project of Dallas Green. Believe me, you're going to want to hear what Aaron HAD to say about the album. Nick & Helen welcome renowned Canadian singer and songwriter, Dallas Green, who performs under the moniker City and Colour. He has an unmistakable sound, both instrumentally and vocally, he's wildly popular, and we're excited to have him with us for his first visit to eTown. Also joining us for the first time is the dynamic duo Birds of Chicago, which consists of talented musicians JT Nero and Allison Russell (two emerging artists gathering a following in American Roots music). There's of course an inspiring E-Chievement Award story, this one from California; and a lot of great conversation, too. Be sure to join us!
This argument seems to be as old as time (or at least as old as "Rock" music), and well if you're as old as time, maybe it's your fault that we're having to debate this, to begin with. Hell, we can't even agree as a species as to where Rock 'N' Roll as a whole began. That right there should tell you something. With that being said, it seems like every couple of years when one of our beloved Rock legends plays his final note, we have a bunch of people shaking their fists at the sky claiming "Maaaaan Rock is dead", or "Maaaaaaan you know they just really don't make 'em like they used to". The scenario plays out time and time again, and almost always with the same results to be had. Those results being you and I sitting here time and time again intensely debating whether or not "Rock" is in fact dead. So....is it? Is the Rock music that we've all grown accustomed to and have grown up knowing and loving actually dead? Has the Rock we once knew morphed into some kid in his mom's basement screaming into an autotuned mic because no one is swiping right on his tinder profile? Has Rock turned into some guy with an acoustic guitar under a bridge belting out ballads about infamous serial killers? Or, hear me out here for a second. I know I'm just the intern that writes these things but just lend me your ear for a second. What if, the "Rock" music we're all used to has just evolved and changed with a music industry that refused to get ahead of the internet, and is now scrambling to continuously stay relevant. So come shake your fist with us as we discuss this age-old testament that folks just can't seem to leave alone. Evolution is natural, so I'll leave you with this, what if Rock isn't dead, and you're just old? It's season 6, episode 9 of your favorite neighborhood watch block captain's favorite music podcast. Community is undoubtedly one of the main reasons music is so important to our mental health. When you discover a song where you feel as though the artist is singing to you, or the instrumental is the perfect soundtrack at that very moment - you get this feeling like someone understands you, that you're not alone. With so many artists focused on being present and relevant on social media and within the algorithm of streaming services, this is an element that gets lost on so many indie artists. Whitby, Ontario Based punk rock band Chastity have recognized the importance of creating community through their music. On January 13th 2022, the band released their 3rd full length album Suffer Summer - with many listeners singing its praises - myself included. Joining me today is the architect behind the project - Brandon Williams. Brandon and his band have toured Europe, parts of the united states with PUP the band, had most recently been opening for the Dirty Nil, has opened for City and Colour and Alexisonfire which likely won't be the last time either - and has signed to one of the most iconic independent Canadian labels in Dine Alone Records, while Deathwish records handles their international distribution. Upon the release of the album Chastity have been featured on billboard in the heart of Toronto at Yonge-Dundas square, and as of the time of this recording - is the face of the Ready to Rock Spotify playlist.Brandon and I have a unique connection in that he and I share the same hometown of Whitby. We talk about how Chastity has been a vessel for creating a community and safe space for fans of his genre of music in a city ruled by sports arenas, and his plans for pitching the municipality on creating a more permanent venue to support an arts community that has been largely disregarded. With a sound described as two Catholic school girls in a knife fight, Alexisonfire released their self-titled debut in 2002, before following up with Watch Out! In 2004 - an effort that showcased a more aggressive, yet refined sound for the band. Following with Crisis in 2006, and Old Crows/Young Cardinals in 2009, the band would soon split primarily owing to the growing success of Dallas Green's solo project, City and Colour. The breakup was not amicable and fans waited two years for a true farewell tour. I think we can all agree that it's been one hell of a covid induced roller-coaster ride over the past couple of years, and one of the industries that felt that the most involved touring musicians. From non-stop touring for years, to closing up shop (what seemed like overnight), while everyone involved in the industry was left scratching their heads. When we started this podcast, we had the idea of being able to talk to you guys about our various concert-going experiences, and that idea quickly became a thought of the past as we watched the world quite literally shut down. It seemed as if our idea had been put to rest before we even had the chance to take a crack at it. Fast forward to now, and as things slowly start their ascent back to "normalcy", we've started seeing the long-awaited return of live music. One of the most challenging things about this is trying to navigate the new "normal" that has become venturing to a live music venue. Russ has found out that the more you do it, the easier it gets. But it's hard to get back in the swing of things after something like a global pandemic. The entire thing kind of sits in the back of your head and as soon as you get around people, you become uneasy almost automatically without even thinking about it. So how do we navigate this still very sensitive and unknown landscape of post-pandemic concerts? We're as unsure as all of you, but there is no way in hell we're going to sit here and not try and figure it out. If you're ready, we're ready. Will the industry be the"same"? Probably not. Will we get back to where we once were? We will undoubtedly be someplace similar—hopefully sooner, rather than later, but truthfully only time will tell. Though things will likely play out differently than they once did, that doesn't mean that different is bad. Change can be good, even if it isn't a change you saw coming. Plus, maybe Kyle will get his wish and people will finally stay the hell away from him at shows. It's season 4, episode 18 of your favorite band's, favorite sound guy's, favorite music podcast. Live albums aren't for everyone, and if you want to get technical, some might say Elvis isn't either. I'm not sure who those people are, but I'm sure they're out there somewhere. Regardless of what you think about Elivs, live music is something that he did exceptionally well, and if you're looking to get into listening to live recorded music, this might be a proper place to start, A majority of artists might go their entire music career without playing Madison Square Garden. Even fewer artists have the ability to sell out Madison Square Garden when and if they get the chance to play it. Elvis not only sold out Madison Square Garden, but he sold it out five times in two days, and then put out two different live albums from the events, and by putting them out I mean he released one of them literally eight days after the show—which even in modern times is completely unheard of. Released in June of 1972, the album was met with much acclaim which helped the album peak at number 11, on the Top 200 US Billboard Albums Chart by August of the same year. The concert and subsequent albums were promoted as being Elvis' first live concerts in NYC since the 1950s, so to say that these shows and the two albums that came from them were a big deal, is certainly an understatement. Despite what appears to be a rather lengthy tracklisting, the release only made its way onto one double-sided LP. Much later on, Evlis' drummer Ronnie Tutt would shed a little light on why this might have been sighting that "The Colonel" Elvis' manager had the mixes sped up so that more songs could fit on the album, increasing his song royalties.Elvis, As Recorded at Madison Square Garden would go on to be certified Gold in August of 1972, Platinum in May of 1988, Double-Platinum in March of 1992, and then Triple-Platinum by July of 1999. This isn't just any live album and if you ask Kyle, he'll tell you that it just might be THE quintessential live album. lon·gev·i·tynoun - long life."the greater longevity of women compared with men" - long existence or service."her longevity in office now appeared as a handicap to the party" Longevity used to be the goal when it came to making it big in the music business, but with a growing industry that has gained much-needed independence from all of the overlord record labels, putting in years and years of work to stay relevant seems like a thing of the past. But what if someone's goal was to come in, get big, make a bunch of money and then cash out and call it a day? Certainly, that would line up with the agenda of an unwanted record label that needs to stay relevant. All they have to do is appear to be offering exactly what someone is looking for, then both parties have something to gain in the deal.Opposite of that, there are artists out there that have been around for what seems like forever. Many of which don't even release music all that often. So how do they stay relevant to an ever-changing industry? It's not only a good question but a loaded one. Some artists have the fortune of a long and flourishing career. But why? It surely can't just be based on talent alone. If you really dig into it, sure there is talent involved (sometimes a lot of it), but there is also so much more. A musician is not only a person, but they're also a business—whether they like it or not. And more often than not that business didn't fund itself upon startup. So if there are enough people involved that depend on you and your "business" to succeed, then you can be damn sure that is exactly what will happen. Let's use Walmart as an example. They are constantly in the headlines for the treatment of their employees among other things, but it never really seems to make much of a difference in how they choose to operate. Why? Simply put, there is too much money involved for the powers that be to let the company fail. It would be financially devastating to millions of people, so it is in the best interest of everyone involved to keep the corporate giant marching on. The same type of scenario plays out in the music industry on a daily basis. So who gets to decide who is worthy of sustained career growth and industry longevity? We talk that and so much more on this almost 100th episode of your favorite school crossing guard's older brother's masseuse's favorite music podcast. It's season 4, episode 14. LET'S GO!!! Keep up with all of the music we talk about in each episode by listening to the Infectious Groove Podcast Companion Songs playlist, exclusively on Spotify. We're going to keep this short and sweet. If you've heard of (or should I say about) Jonny Craig, then simply forget what you've heard, read, or seen—you know like the Men In Black memory eraser thing, use that. If you have no idea who or what I am talking about, then perfect that is exactly what I want to hear. If you would also please refrain from using google and typing this gentleman's name into the search bar, that would also be greatly appreciated. Just simply hit up your favorite streaming service, type in the album's name (which is ungodly long), and start listening. Wow, you're done already? Awesome, now listen again. Man, twice in one hour? You're a champ, and third times a charm—just kidding, kind of. Really though, you can stop now. Now, feel free to google away. Most of what you're going to read is true (and unfortunate), I just didn't want it to take away from your listening experience. So what happens when you take a talented singer/songwriter from Canada, mix in a pretty severe drug habit, and an ego the size of Mt. Everest? Well, you get Jonny Craig. You might have also read that he has been kicked out of a handful of bands (some of which he was the founding member), this is also true. But in my honest opinion, his solo work far outweighs the stuff he did with those bands—but per usual, I am just the intern (unpaid) and I really have no clue what I am talking about. When all is said and done, we all have our own opinions of Jonny, especially those of us that have met him in person. But at the end of the day, there is a reason why so many of us keep coming back to this album. What's the reason you ask? Hey, how about you listen and find out. It's season 4, episode 13 of Jonny's future ex-bandmate's favorite music podcast. LET'S GO!!! It's Season 4, and we're BACK—but don't call it a comeback, because you know damn well we never really left! In the Season 4 premiere, we've got Russ in-studio with Michelle and Kyle joining remotely from Babyland—the land of milk, sharts, and tired cries. So bear with us as it might sound like they're on the phone (because they are), and the sound quality you're used to might sound a bit different this go around. Have you ever wished you had the chance to attend a particular concert, or see a particular artist perform and you've just never gotten around to it? Maybe the artist passed away before you had the chance to see them live, or maybe you're like Michelle, and concert ticket prices are just too damn high. This week Russ presented the crew with an excellent question: If you could attend any artist's show (living, dead, almost dead, etc.) who would it be? Think of it as a dream show, with a dream line-up. An Opening Act of our choice, followed by a Headliner—don't mind if we do. You're probably thinking about how easy it would be to try and come up with a good answer, and for someone like Russ (who's seen more live music than some working musicians) it may be, but just sit and think for a second and we bet you'll change your mind at least 5 times, maybe even 10 times. So join us (while you're still changing your mind) as we create our own fantasy live music line-up, and explain why we chose who we did. Kyle even creates his very own music festival. It's 2001 but don't call it a comeback, even though so many did at the time. It had been six years since Michael Jackson had released an album and the anticipation was eating his fans alive. Having endured years of media scrutiny people wondered if he still had it, or if he was going to stay out of the limelight for good. Not only did Michael still have it, but he also had some things he still needed to get off his chest, and that is exactly what he did. Recorded over a period of four years, while spending a reported $30 million dollars to perfect what would be his last studio album. Invincible set out to prove that Michael was just that, and he was going to let everyone (whether they wanted to hear it or not) know about it. Having been continuously harassed and terrorized by the media and various extortionists, Michael showed everyone that he was once again an unstoppable force to be reckoned with. Many would say that musically, Michael could do no wrong, and pretty much everything he involves himself with turns to gold—but this wasn't necessarily the case when Invincible was released. Met with a wide variety of criticism initially it seemed as though Michael's last offering, was surely not his best. Many blame the ongoing conflicts between him and his record label at the time for causing the issues that lead to little to no promotion of the album, and no worldwide tour to support its release. While those things absolutely impacted the initial success and acceptance of the album as a whole, others were left thinking to themselves "what about the song sequencing though?"—and with that very valid point, we at IGP are with you on that one. As a continuation of our ongoing album review series, join us as we take a dive into exactly what made MJ so invincible after all. The haves, the have-nots, the stinky pinkys, the wonky stonks, and the absolute F@!%ING JAMS (because there are more than a few). Fudge Tunnel special with David Ryley in conversation with David Eastaugh Fudge Tunnel's reputation was built around their massive guitar sound and ironic sense of humour, and were popular with the British music press - at least at first. The band's first release was "Single Of The Week" in NME magazine in January 1990, with NME declaring "Absolutely and totally the best single ever to be released in 1990. Total nine guitar attack-rock". The band undertook several European tours in 1991 and 1992 including support slots with Fugazi, Silverfish and The Jesus Lizard, as well as support slots with Swervedriver, Godflesh,[3] and regular performances at popular London venues The Camden Falcon and Camden Underworld. Two more albums were to follow in 1993 (Creep Diets) and 1994 (The Complicated Futility of Ignorance). Newport also was active with Nailbomb, a collaboration with Max Cavalera (Sepultura), who released one studio album and one live album of their Dynamo Open Air Festival performance. After the release of their third studio album, the band split up. David Ryley ran his label BGR Records for a while. Adrian Parkin played with Tubesurfer until 1996 when they too split up, and then returned to being a quantity surveyor in Bolton. Alex Newport went on to pursue a successful career as a producer/mixer and now lives and runs his own studio in New York. He has produced albums by At the Drive-In, The Mars Volta, Bloc Party, City And Colour, and many others. He also formed the band Theory of Ruin, who released one album, Counter Culture Nosebleed and the Frontline Poster Child EP, both on Escape Artist Records and currently is playing in Red Love with Matt Tong.

This is a doozy. On the show this week is solo artist Dallas Green. He previously played in post-hardcore band Alexisonfire which is where I became really close with him. I've wanted Dallas on the show for quite some time but honestly, didn't really want to waste his time until this show grew organically. We discussed the idea of celebrity, anxiety and reflecting on his creative life. Highly personal and for me, deeply emotional. Thanks for listening. THIS IS OUR FUNDRAISING MONTH.
