For the third, and final, episode where The Ledge attempts to fix the godawful errors of The Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame we handle the overlooked bands of the 90’s. Along with the usual punk and indie rock bands of that time, there’s also a couple of sets devoted to the Americana sub-genre that rose in popularity during that time. Again, just think of how much fun a ceremony would be that included the likes of the Supersuckers, Steve Earle, Rocket From the Crypt, Fugazi, Superchunk, and so many other greats. Maybe an Uncle Tupelo reunion could be negotiated after an all star jam under the Golden Smog name. Billy Childish could possibly jam with Reverend Horton Heat and Archers of Loaf! Oh that would be a show I wouldn’t miss! I also start the show with a lengthy discussion about my friend Monica Kindt, who tragically passed away earlier this week. She was my manager at two different record stores over the years, and was a person who endured many of my childish rants over the years. My thoughts go to her family and all of us friends who miss her so much. She would have loved my […]

On the heels of the announcement last week of a much anticipated new album by indie folk band The Head and the Heart, I'm excited to be able to share the following conversation with the band's Matty Gervais. This is one of your first chances to hear more about their exceptional new collection of tunes, Aperture, the band's sixth LP, which will be out on May 9th. There are already a few beautiful introductory singles online now, including the anthemic "Arrow" and the newly shared album opener, "After The Setting Sun." It was a pleasure to connect over zoom with Matty to talk about the making of Aperture and how it heralds a new chapter of freedom and collaboration for THATH. We also talk about some earlier THATH history, how they have benefited in more recent years from band therapy, and his own personal creative process for this new album. And of course we start by delving into Matty's early life experiences with music, growing up in Seattle during the grunge explosion, falling in love with recording his songs using a boombox technique he heard Dave Grohl describe in an interview, playing in bands with his brother and eventually joining THATH more than a decade ago. You can pre-order or pre-save Aperture, and get tickets for their upcoming shows HERE!Preview:3:30 - 13:00 - Early life experiences with music, learning to play drums, growing up during grunge, going to Bumbershoot with his parents, getting into Posies, Fastbacks, Supersuckers, The Presidents of the United States of America and other local bands13:20 - 21:00 - Writing and recording his own songs using Dave Grohl's boombox technique, developing his sound, playing in various bands leading up to joining THATH21:15 - 31:00 - Observing THATH as a fan, joining the band, adapting to their fame:31:00 - 34:00 - Band therapy and its benefits35:15 - 40:00 - Aperture, how it started and the writing and recording processes that arose from there40:30 - 49:00 - "Forest Bath": Walking through the woods writing melodies and lyrics; the inspiration for “After The Setting Sun”

I'm so happy to sit down with my old friend Jesse Dayton! Jesse is a guitarist, author, record producer and songwriter from Austin by way of Beaumont, Texas. In addition to cutting his teeth on punk rock throughout the 80's and 90s, Jesse had a serious interest in country and rockabilly. Not only a founding member of The Road Kings, Jesse has recorded and toured extensively with Waylon Jennings, Rob Zombie, X and Johnny Cash to name a few. We get to talk about our shared experience growing up as weird kids in small town Texas and how that informed our outlook and our careers. Jesse also shares his experience backing up some of the most iconic artists in history and embarking on a successful solo career and author. https://jesse-dayton.bandcamp.com/musichttps://www.jessedayton.com/Explore more music podcasts at Ruinous Media.Find us on Instagram
With the podcast going away at the end of the year, the boys wanted to get one more game of "You Can't Play This" in before they shut it down. Of course, they had to bring on a guest. Welcome back one final time, their good friend from the band Roaring Truth, Marty Hill. Marty and the boys have some awesome bands lined up and they do their best to take away one song from the band's setlist. It's never easy with this game. Plus, we have music by the following bands:Corrosion of Conformity, Supersuckers, Black Sabbitch, Diana Drive, Hindley Street Country Club, Master Sword, Panndora, & The Keepers of Still Town Join Randy and Troy, for this and every episode of Ouch, You're on my Hair and subscribe to the show on ApplePodcasts, Spotify, iHeartRadio, Amazon Music, Podomatic, Podbean, and more. "And ohhh, my soul, they got a hold on me, the evil powers of rock 'n' roll!" -The Evil Powers of Rock 'n' Roll by The SupersuckersChris almost put the lyrics from Metallica's Sad but True as the introduction to this episode, but then he remembered how many times he referenced "the evil powers of Rock 'n' Roll" during the recording. If Chris is going to rip off people cooler than him, he's going whole hog in ripping off people cooler than him, and the Supersuckers are much cooler than Chris. The Supersuckers are much cooler than most people. From Link Wray's Rumble to Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven to Iron Maiden's The Number of the Beast to NWA's Straight Outta Compton, there has been a long history of society being terrified of certain forms of music, and during the 1980s, things got really weird. This had a very distinct effect on Chris and Matt during their formative years.40 years later (Christ, we're old...), they're going to address this age-old question, "Does aggressive music create aggressive people?" Come listen to Chris and Matt discuss examples of 1980s media and their sensationalized reporting, the PMRC (Really, PMRC? Sheena Easton was that terrifying to you?), and at no additional charge to you, the listener, they'll reference multiple scientific studies that have directly addressed this issue over the years. Just like they always do, they'll wrap everything up with their half-baked opinions on the topic. Thank you so much for listening, and Chris and Matt hope you enjoy this episode!
Nirvana, the White Stripes, Hole, the Hives—all sprang from an underground music scene where similarly raw bands, enjoying various degrees of success and luck, played for throngs of fans in venues ranging from dive bars to massive festivals, but were mostly ignored by a music industry focused on mega-bands and shiny pop stars. “We Never Learn: The Gunk Punk Undergut, 1988–2001” tracks the inspiration and beautiful destruction of this largely undocumented movement. What they took, they fought for, every night. They reveled in '50s rock 'n' roll, '60s garage rock, and '70s punk while creating their own wave of gut-busting riffs and rhythm. The majority of bands that populate this book—the Gories, the Supersuckers, the Dwarves, the Mummies, Rocket from the Crypt, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and the Muffs among them—gained little long-term reward from their nonstop touring and brain-slapping records. What they did have was free liquor, cheap drugs, chaotic romances, and a crazy good time, all the while building a dedicated fan base that extends across the world. Truly, this is the last great wave of down-and-dirty rock 'n' roll.In this expanded edition, Eric Davidson reveals more about the punk undergut with a new preface, postscript, and even more photos. The book also includes free twenty-song download.Purchase a copy of “We Never Learn - The Gunk Punk Undergut, 1988-2001, Expanded Edition”: https://rowman.com/ISBN/9781493059867/We-Never-Learn-The-Gunk-Punk-Undergut-1988-2001-ExpandedEdition Signed copies for sale at: https://store.wexarts.org/weneverlearn Visit the New Bomb Turks website: https://newbombturks.comFollow the New Bomb Turks:Facebook: www.facebook.com/newbombturksTwitter: https://twitter.com/newbombturksInstagram: www.instagram.com/newbombturks/?hl=enRead Eric Davidson's writings at the “Please Kill Me” website: https://pleasekillme.com/author/eric-davidsonListen to a playlist of the music discussed in this episode: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0iHKKn9m8e44QZuqvFsiHR?si=b3ddbd54635c4c13Listen to The Gibson Brothers debut album from 1988 “Big Pine Boogie”: https://youtu.be/U31Gt4tWcZcThe Booked On Rock Website: www.bookedonrock.comFollow The Booked On Rock with Eric Senich:FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com/bookedonrockpodcastTWITTER: https://twitter.com/bookedonrockINSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/bookedonrockpodcast/?hl=enSupport Your Local Bookstore! The Suicide Notes ooze gutter-trash rock n' roll. Low-slung buzzsaw guitars and raw nicotine-soaked vocals, rock 'n' roll swagger, and whiskey on the rocks; the illegitimate sons of punk and sleaze, conceived on a bed of red wine, cigarettes, and back alley attitude. Born under the bad sign of guttercat rock n' roll in 2019, the band swiftly secured management and a sponsorship deal with Cloven Hoof Rum before launching two acoustic singles - which have had continuous radio play since their release in July 2019. These were soon followed up with a third well received single 'Momma Sang The Blues' and the release of their debut acoustic and electric 'Pleasures Of Despair' EPs. These gained rave reviews across the board and the band were No.1 on Only Rock Radio in Spain, and No. 16 across all stations on the Radio Indie Alliance Top 40. The gig calendar for 2020 was all-but wiped out by the Covid 19 pandemic, but not before the band had garnered stellar reviews for their debut gig at London's Hope & Anchor, and for performances at the Dublin Castle, Camden's Unicorn, and Dementia Aware Fest in Wolverhampton. Securing a new management deal with Forge A.M.P and adding the extra sonic assault of second guitarist Danny Gould, the Suicide Notes were widely acknowledged as one of the Day 1 highlights of the rescheduled HRH Sleaze 2021, along with a number of festival appearances, support slots with Last Great Dreamers, Healthy Junkies ans a bunch of headline shows. 2022 sees a return to Hard Rock Hell with a headline appearance at HRH AOR, a support slot with ‘Greatest Rock n' Roll Band In The World' Supersuckers, and festival appearances at RoadRage, CC7 XIII Shades of Black, Mayors Fest, and a third Punk n' Roll Rendezvous, plus a return to multiple Dementia Fest 2021 events. Part 2 of our interview with Frank Meyer, who has more David Lee Roth stories, talks about seeing the very first, open-to-the-public Van Halen reunion rehearsal on stage, covering Van Halen's "In A Simple Rhyme" (it's very cool, check it out), talking Van Halen with Eddie Spaghetti of the Supersuckers, meeting Eddie Van Halen at Dweezil Zappa's house, Eddie's infamous backyard party for a movie soundtrack, and much more. You may have first known musician, author and producer Frank Meyer as the frontman for The Streetwalkin' Cheetahs, but Van Halen die-hards may know him from his work on copy-editor and interviewer on photographer Neil Zlozower's book "Van Halen: A Visual History 1978 – 1984." He has also interviewed David Lee Roth many times -- first time around for POPsmear Magazine -- and featured DLR in the book "On the Road with The Ramones." In addition, Frank has a great new album with Eddie Spaghetti of The Supersuckers: https://www.instagram.com/spaghettiandf.

Meyer he's got some amazing Dave stories to tell, from working and drinking a lot with him, to hearing Dave and Van Halen reunion music, as recorded 7 (!) years before they got back together! And as an FYI, Frank has a great new album with Eddie Spaghetti of The Supersuckers -- more on that here: https://www.instagram.com/spaghettiandfrank.
