Jennifer Campbell founded Heritage Memoirs in 2003 following 25 years as a writer and editor. During her career, she interviewed and wrote profiles of hundreds of people, but did not get any of her own family's stories before her father died and her mother developed dementia. Recognizing the great and final loss when the histories are not written down, she joined other pioneers in the personal history field and built her company, one story at a time. Heritage Memoirs and Jennifer Campbell have been featured in the Wall Street Journal, the Toronto Star, More and Elle magazines, CNN Money, Gannett newspapers (publishers of USA Today), Costco Connection, and Kiplinger's Retirement Report, among others. Slau - "There’s a known problem with the Edirol R-09 that might potentially affect listeners who own the machine. I was listening to Jim Fidler’s podcast, Republic of Avalon Radio, where, during his walk with his wife, he started talking about this problem where the side of the unit starts to come loose and buckle. It seems like a minor nuisance at first but it becomes a major problem if not fixed. I experienced the same thing and was surprised to find out that a lot of people are starting to see this. "Jim had one of the first units ever shipped and I followed suit about a week later. So, now that we’ve seen this effect, I bet more and more people will start to notice this. Thing is, our units are out of warranty but those people who see this now and bought their units a few months after us can still have it fixed under warranty. BTW, another issue that people have seen is that the back plate switches come loose very easily and just move freely without any effect. That was a problem that happened to both of us and is also a known issue. Edirol hasn’t done any recall or anything but I think they should. They’re replacing warranty units with a different polymer these days. Anyway, maybe this will help some folks. Jim Fidler talks about it in one of his recent episodes." 'Silver' was conceived for TouchRadio as part of their 25th anniversary. As a starting point, electronic sounds were created using a malfunctioning Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 synth, recorded in 5 improvised passes of 25 minutes each - 5x5=25. The title also reflects this, silver being the material that denotes a 25th anniversary. Field recordings were made in Thailand and New Zealand over December 2006 and incorporated into the sonic jamboree - the piercing, feedback like tone at the start is the actual sound of cicadas in the Thai sub-tropical rainforest, untreated, the sound they produce as individuals synchronizing every 60/90 seconds to produce almost a pure sine wave. Further on is the dawn chorus in Wellington, New Zealand with the distinctive, clacking call of a bird called a Tui sounding out. Close to the end of the piece is the singing of a young Thai lad, sat around the neck of an elephant as we both rode into the rainforest, 'home' never too far away for me as he was wearing a t-shirt on the back of which was printed the front page of a US newspaper from 1979 announcing the death of Sid Vicious! Recordings made with an Edirol R-09 and Soundman binaural, in-ear microphones..
Alexandre O. Philippe, a Denver film maker who is a friend of mine, has an 11-minute short in this year's Denver Film Festival. It's titled Left and it portrays, without a single word of dialogue, a deep sense of loss of a loved one. At tonight's screening, I happened to sit down next to two stars of Alexandre's last feature-length film, Earthlings: Ugly Bags of Mostly Water, and they agreed to a quick interview. Earthlings is a documentary of an institute devoted to preserving the Klingon language created for Star Trek. The podcast concludes with excerpts from Alexandre's introductory comments for Left. After the movie, I recorded an interview with Marilyn Auer, who stars in Left, but my unfamiliarity with my new Edirol R-09 recorder led to the painful discovery that I hadn't actually been recording when we spoke.

This is John Osborne of Osborne Associates. He's a person who records sound for broadcast. He's worked on lots of projects over the last 20 years or so and is doing reality TV stuff right now. I asked John lots of questions about equipment and stuff. His answers were aimed at people looking to do a "professional" job, so some of the equipment mentioned fits that price range, but it's really cool to listen to a pro even if you can't afford it. Realize that this was all recorded in a quite noisy club, with music, bar, candlepin bowling, and the Patriots football on TV -- a good test for my equipment (Sennheiser MD46 mike, Edirol R-1 recorder) and technique. Recorded: 2006-01-07 Length: 14:11, Size: 6.5MB
My third podcast is about San Francisco. Download it here or subscribe to the podcast feed in iTunes. » Download (MP3, 16.8MB) » Audio-only RSS feed (drag to iTunes) I had a lot of fun putting this together, recording sounds in and around San Francisco. I used my MiniDisc RH-910 and Audio-Technica AT822 microphone. Turns out the MiniDisc was a pretty bad investment, though. It has been a real hassle to use, and I am eyeing the new Edirol R-09 as a replacement. Go buy the music used in this podcast from Magnatune: Cargo Cult, Phoebe Carrai, and Arthur Yoria. They are building a great modern label that embraces what the internet is about instead of fighting it. Also special thanks to the Marin County Free Library for permission to use a portion of the Arthur Giddings interview. Check out their site on the 1906 earthquake. Other resources: Point Reyes, San Francisco Police 9-1-1 Tapes, 19th-Century California Sheet Music, WWDC 2006 Keynote. Update: How could I leave out a link to Sketchcrawl.com? Also: Eadweard Muybridge, Enrico Casarosa, and Dorothea Lange.
