There's only a week left until Election Day! So we're digging into all the latest election news and gossip as millions and millions of dollars are flooding the local airwaves with campaign ads. First, political insiders are saying that that the polls on Proposition 131 (aka, open primaries and ranked choice voting) are tightening, despite all the backers' endorsements and fundraising. Then, was Mayor Mike Johnston “factually incorrect” when we asked him about the sales tax hike he put in front of Denver voters to fund affordable housing? Host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi are talking politics, checking some facts, and fielding some listener questions and hot takes on the local races. Sen. Michael Bennet laid out his case against open primaries and ranked choice voting. For more, Paul interviewed Kent Thiry and Amber McReynolds to better understand their case for the proposed reforms, as well as State Rep. Emily Sirota about why she's so firmly against them. How are you planning to vote on Prop 131? We want to hear from you! In addition to discussing his sales tax hike proposal in detail, he also talked to us about restaurants and the tipped minimum wage conundrum, cracking down on traffic violations, and his excitement for KroenkeTown. AMERICA! F**K YEAH! That's right! Team America! The RSA gang wraps up their Trey Parker and Matt Stone feature films. They wrap it up with the most American of all films, not to mention the only film in cinematic history to be made with puppetry! A satire of action film archetypes, American militarism, and the global implications of the politics of the United States, the film follows the titular paramilitary police force, who recruit a Broadway actor to assist in saving the world from Kim Jong Il and his conspiracy of Islamic terrorists and liberal Hollywood actors. Team America: World Police intertwines puppetry and miniature effects in a manner similar to Supermarionation, known for its use in the television series Thunderbirds, although Stone and Parker were not fans of that show. The duo worked on the script with former South Park writer Brady for nearly two years. The film had a troubled production, with various technical problems regarding the puppets and the scheduling extremes of finishing in time for its theatrical release. It also came into routine conflict with the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), which returned the film multiple times with an NC-17 rating due to an explicit sex scene involving puppets. Team America: World Police premiered at the Denver Film Festival on October 14, 2004, and was theatrically released in the United States the following day. The film received generally positive reviews from critics and was a modest success at the box office, grossing over $51 million worldwide on a $32 million budget.

“The Holly” debuted at the Denver Film Festival earlier this month and caught a lot of local attention. Based on a book by investigative journalist Julian Rubinstein, “The Holly” centers on Terrance Roberts, a former gang member who left that life behind and returned to his Park Hill neighborhood to work as a community activist. But things went sideways and Roberts found himself targeted in an alleged conspiracy involving Denver police and local government officials. The book and the documentary have generated a lot of interest over the last year, only to be made more fascinating when Roberts announced his candidacy for mayor. Regular contributor Theo Wilson also grew up in Park Hill, and met Roberts through various community circles. He joins host Bree Davies to talk about what makes Terrance Roberts such a compelling mayoral candidate. Bree mentioned this earlier City Cast Denver episode with Terrance Roberts himself and author Julian Rubinstein. Election day might be over, but Colorado's still reckoning with some big decisions voters made this midterm, annnnd we have questions: What's going to happen with Congressional District 3, where MAGA darling Lauren Boebert is in a shockingly close race with Democrat Adam Frisch? And what about the decriminalization of psychedelics? This is the beginning of what could be a massive industry, but will it even be commercialized in the first place? And does our back-to-back NBA MVP Nikola Jokić have a role in our electoral outcome? Producer Paul Karolyi, host Bree Davies and Westword editor-in-chief Patty Calhoun tackle all these questions and more, plus some special hot takes from some of City Cast Denver's favorite contributors.  Paul mentioned the city's new Business Facade Improvement Program, the Colorado Sun's oral history of the fight for legal weed ten years ago, and Westword's interview with indigenous comic Josh Emerson about the Native Comedy Showcase at the Hi Dive this Sunday.  Get more deets on the City Cast Denver official “maybe” event of the week (as in maybe we'll be there!) in editor Peyton Garcia's newsletter, Hey Denver!  You can also subscribe by texting DENVER to 66866. As the weather changes and we turn toward our favorite snowy outdoor activities, camping is often left out of the picture. But beyond skiing, snowboarding, and maybe snowshoe trekking, have you ever considered pitching a tent in the high country during the winter months? Patricia Cameron — writer and executive director of Blackpackers — thinks you should. Coming off a trip to Alaska where she camped on a glacier, the outdoor expert returns to the show to talk with host Bree Davies about why camping in the snow can be fun (and actually isn't that much different than sleeping in the great outdoors any other time of year!). This time last century, John Ford was an actor, day-player, and assistant director hanging with his actor-brother in the emerging medium of motion pictures. Now legendary, he is the current record-holder for most Best Director Academy Awards, and in many ways the author of what we consider the mainstream movie-going experience. On today's episode I'm joined by filmmaker Henry Butash, where we discuss not only the movie he made before his “celebrated masterpiece” The Searchers (quotation marks mine), its tonally difficult first hour, but also its justifying and deeply moving last hour fifteen. Also, randomly: Butash's marathoning of 40 Ford films over the summer, Ford's guilt and legend-making storytelling instincts, his intensive prolificacy (six features in one year!), his expressiveness in the studio system, his poetic tendencies, and the unending discovery that is his prodigious, uneven, deep filmography. The Long Gray Line is available to rent VOD and frequently appears on Turner Classic Movies.Henry Butash is a New York-based filmmaker who began his career in the editing room with director Terrence Malick on films including Knight of Cups, Voyage of Time and Song to Song. He wrote and directed his feature debut, The Atlantic City Story, starring Jessica Hecht (Friends, Breaking Bad) and Grammy Award-winner Mike Faist (Dear Evan Hansen, Steven Spielberg's upcoming West Side Story), with the film recently premiering at the Denver Film Festival.
