In this episode, I dive deep into the fascinating intersections of science and spirituality. Are we all connected in ways that go beyond what we can see or measure? From the mysteries of quantum physics and consciousness studies to the neuroscience behind meditation and near-death experiences, I explore how science is beginning to reveal insights that resonate with ancient spiritual teachings. Join me as I discuss the interconnected nature of reality, the potential for meditation to rewire the brain, and groundbreaking studies on consciousness that challenge conventional ideas about the mind. Whether you're a science enthusiast, a spiritual seeker, or just curious, this episode offers a fresh perspective on the big questions about life, connection, and the universe.

From TEDMED 2020: Researching psychedelics for psychiatric disorders with Dr. Frederick Barrett

Frederick S. Barrett, PhD, is affiliated with the Center for Psychedelic & Consciousness Research (@JHPsychedelics) at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore (@Hopkins Medicine). Dr. Barrett spoke with Nick Andrews (@Nick_Andrews_) at @TEDMED 2020, about the research that has been conducted by the Center for Psychedelic & Consciousness Research on the impact of psychedelics, or hallucinogens, on psychiatric disorders. He has no disclosures. Take-home points Dr. Barrett transitioned into neuroscience research through his interest in the effect of music on human emotions and the brain. Until 1970, psychedelics such as psilocybin were widely used in clinical research, with more than 1,000 academic papers published about their use. For example, psychedelics were used as a model for schizophrenia and helped identify the role of serotonin in psychosis. They were also studied to treat addiction and as a treatment for existential anxiety in cancer. In 1970, psychedelics were deemed illegal by the Controlled Substances Act which brought the United States in compliance with the 1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substances. Roland R. Griffiths, PhD, and a group at Johns Hopkins have led the way in reestablishing clinical research using psychedelics. Enthusiasm at the lab is borne out by the potential that this research might help many people. Institutional concerns also are at work because of the “rich and sordid history” of these compounds. In the next 10 years, Dr. Barrett would like to have a clear understanding of the effect size of psychedelics on mood and substance use disorders. Psychedelic agents have a novel therapeutic quality: Studies support that a few or even one exposure to a psychedelic compound has a short-term biological effect and can lead to a long-lasting therapeutic effect, such as remission of mood disorder or change in personality characteristics. The clinical outcomes are mediated by the intensity of the psychedelic experience. Summary The Center for Psychedelic & Consciousness Research is working to discern which medical indications have the most promise for being treated with psychedelics. Its goal is a balanced and rational approach to psychedelic research and subsequent treatment considering the societal and political contexts around these drugs. Dr. Barrett trained in music education and psychology and has been a musician all this life. He moved into neuroscience during graduate school and used music as a tool to study emotions and the brain. Music, meditation, and psychedelics have the similar flow component that inspires converging research questions and a desire to analyze the brain and understand this experience that is central to consciousness. Music is fundamental to the human experience, and it is exciting to try to describe the neural circuitry of how music affects the brain and emotions. Music is useful in therapy because it can regulate emotions. There has long been an overlap of the use of psychedelics and music in therapy. A prime example of this is guided imagery and music (GIM), which is a specialized form of therapy that arose out of work done by Helen Bonny, PhD, a nurse, music therapist, and concert violinist. Bonny developed a protocol for using music to regulate emotions during psychedelic experiences. In the next 10 years, Dr. Barrett would like to have a clear understanding of the effect size of psychedelics on mood and substance use disorders. It will be interesting to see whether and how psychedelics are efficacious in treating an array of substance use disorders. If effective, they would be a single-use treatment for addiction to substances that interact with diverse neural circuits. References Barrett FS et al. The Genealogy Professional podcast with Host Marian Pierre-Louis – Interviews with Experienced Genealogists

Jennifer Campbell founded Heritage Memoirs in 2003 following 25 years as a writer and editor. During her career, she interviewed and wrote profiles of hundreds of people, but did not get any of her own family's stories before her father died and her mother developed dementia. Recognizing the great and final loss when the histories are not written down, she joined other pioneers in the personal history field and built her company, one story at a time. Heritage Memoirs and Jennifer Campbell have been featured in the Wall Street Journal, the Toronto Star, More and Elle magazines, CNN Money, Gannett newspapers (publishers of USA Today), Costco Connection, and Kiplinger's Retirement Report, among others. He went on to be an engineer at Sequential Circuits (where he created Vector Synthesis), Digidesign, Marion Systems (Tom Oberheim), and Roland R&D US, teach synthesis at UCLA Extension, and write for magazines including Music Technology and Keyboard. More recently, he started Learning Modular as a way to teach others how to use modular synthesizers, and co-wrote the recent modular synthesis book Patch & Tweak with Kim Bjørn. Chris freely mixes samples and synthesis, creating a hybrid blend of electronic music with influences from world music and spoken word. He previously released the ensemble album “Alias Zone: Lucid Dreams”, which won the AFIM award for best independent electronic instrumental/ambient album of 2002. After a long detour in the video and film industry, he is now making music again, both as a solo artist and with the ensemble Meridian Alpha.  His Data Cult Audio set consists of a series of solo works Chris performed on his modular-based live performance system. Mardi Dickinson is the founder and CEO of KymryGroup a digital media company that focuses on social marketing and photography. Mardi has decades of experience in the advertising, photography and publishing industries. She is also the owner, host and producer of BirdCallsRadio and the BirdCallsRadio podcast. This is a journalistic platform with guests that talk about wild birds and conservation.  Her practical knowledge of digital systems and culture enabled her to blend smart content creation with a promotional scheme critical to her current success. She is also a prolific and widely published photographer who has worked on the inside of the photography and publishing business. She has two master's degrees one in photography and one in marketing.  We talk about how Mardi got involved in bird watching and how podcasting was a natural transformation for her. In spite of this, she still faced challenges. She shares these challenges along with great advice for new podcasters. She also shares her world class equipment list and setup. We also get to learn about migratory birds and songbirds. Mardi shares some of her favorite birds to spot and one she is yet to find. She also shares her favorite places for bird watching. We talk about the challenges of tackling a small niche, and Mardi’s vision of overcoming that.  We also talk about photography and our nostalgia for old school film developing. Darkrooms and all. Mardi shares how she is a conservationist and historian. She uses her work to share the history of conservation with future generations. She even has a legacy podcast series of important conservationists that have passed on. All of Mardi’s guests are her favorites, but she shares a little about a couple of special guests. Mardi is doing important work that will benefit future generations.  Show Notes: [03:48] Mardi's mom was an author of children's books and a professional photographer. They lived in the country, and Mardi loved being outdoors. [04:51] Her family also went on outdoor adventures on weekends.  [05:57] She was in front of the camera a lot but preferred being behind the camera. Her first picture was published in a local paper when she was 15. [06:54] In high school, she was the editor of the yearbook and paper. She also did side projects.  [07:06] She has two master's degrees one in photography and one in marketing. She also mentored with several well known artists.  [08:21] Darrell and Mardi both miss the old days of darkrooms.  [10:04] Mardi's husband is also a photographer. On dates, they would go bird watching.  [11:39] She became fascinated at the behavior of birds. It became an obsession.  [12:28] BirdCallsRadio started in 2011. Mardi took the show over from a partner. She changed the focus and made it interview based.  [14:06] There aren't very many podcasts about wild birds and conservation. She knew that if she positioned it correctly and was patient, the podcast would get the attention it should.  [15:04] Mardi is a historian and has several very important archived calls. She wants to share the stories of those who have lived lives that we haven't known. She wants to leave information about conservation for generations.  [16:50] The podcast is about more than wild birds. It's about conservation as a whole. The purpose is to show us where we came from in order to know where to go. [18:44] One of Mardi's first legacy podcast was with Chandler Robbins. The work he did with migratory songbirds and the effect of DDT changed history. He passed away in 2016. [19:43] Jim Fowler of Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom was also one of her interviews.  [22:00] Mardi interviews in person and knows a lot about gear.  [22:22] She has a studio at her office with a Soundcraft mixer. She has monitor speakers. She has a JK audio phone connector. She has been using Skype, but is changing soon. Probably to SquadCast.  [23:18] On location, she uses a Sound Devices audio recorder. She wants to have the best content that she can have with very good audio quality. She can also use Skype and her iPhone. She also uses a Roland R-05 handheld recorder with a dynamic mic.  [24:55] She uses condenser mics in her studio.  [27:44] She wanted great sound and bought great equipment.  [29:13] A challenged Mardi faced was understanding there is a learning curve you just have to go through. She had to find her rhythm.  [30:25] It's helpful to line up 10 shows ready to go, because there is so much to do. Having an editing team like PPS saves time and money. [32:44] She is planning on adding a guest scheduler. She does like to send personalized emails. Finding guests is the most time consuming.  [35:34] In the spring, she loves to bird in Northwest Ohio. There's a migratory track there. It's on the edge of Lake Erie. She also loves Cape May, New Jersey.  [37:56] She would like to go back to Africa, Alaska, the Galapagos, and the Pantanal in Brazil.  [38:47] Atlantic Puffins are really cute. She hopes to one day see a Laysan Albatross. There are thousands in Midway Atoll.  [41:16] Mardi defines success as doing the work. Audience interaction and comments are also success.  [42:08] She's working on doing speaking engagements and covering events. She also has Sunday School bird watching for kids in the spring and the fall.  [43:18] She might be developing another podcast for her other business.  [45:24] Darrell's Takeaways: Mardi uses BirdCallsRadio to leave a historical record of those working in conservation for future generations. She uses world class gear. Mardi recommends doing test interviews before the regular production. Start with a buffer of at least five episodes.  Links and Resources: Pro Podcast Solutions KymryGroup Mardi Dickinson on Twitter BirdCalls Radio on Facebook Mardi Dickinson on LinkedIn BirdCallsRadio Podcast Blackburnian Warbler BCR 112: Sidney Gauthreaux BCR 083: Chandler S. Ableton’s Loop is a summit for music makers. It’s an incredible get together for people in the music production community to meet and share ideas. The schedule of events is amazing, and there are opportunities to talk, face to face, with so many brilliant people. I was hanging around the Maker Zone, when Angelica from Ableton asked if I’d like to do a short presentation. Since I have a thing or two to say about making sounds, I gladly accepted. This episode is the audio of that talk. I recorded it on my Roland R-07 field recorder, and did my best to clean it up for this show. It was quite an honor to give this talk in front of so many people I admire, including Francis Preve, Slynk, Elisabeth and James from Synthtopia, Josh Spoon, and many more. It's the mid point between Christmas and New Year…we might benefit from a break from the excesses. We can't go cold-turkey from the excesses of non-stop food and drink so a gin and tonic or a bit of sloe gin is a welcome comfort. The Sloe, or wild Plum, is the fruit of the Blackthorn found in the hedgerows. By autumn these small fruits are oval, blue-black and their sourness makes them perfect to cover with sugar and gin which by Christmas has formed into a perfectly luxurious holiday tipple, sloe gin. Cicely Mary Barker, The Sloe Fairy, Flower Fairy series c. 1927 The Sloe, or wild Plum, is the fruit of the Blackthorn found in the hedgerows. By autumn these small fruits are oval, blue-black and their sourness makes them perfect to cover with sugar and gin which by Christmas will have formed into a perfectly luxurious holiday tipple, sloe gin. Gin was invented in Holland around 1650 and it made it’s way to England not long after. Distilled from grain, it gets its name from the crushed juniper berries it passes through which are called genever in Dutch. Juniper berries have long been used medicinally with their cordials being renowned for their astringent, restorative and sustaining properties. They were even thrown on the floors of medieval homes so that when guests walked upon them the cracked juniper berries would emit their fragrant spice...a sort of applied pot pouri. Less than a hundred years from when it was invented, England found itself in the midst of an all-out gin craze. Gin was the first spirit produced in the industrial age and gin was incredibly inexpensive due to the fact that the government did not tax grain OR distillation. Sloe gin was known as the poor mans port' and adding sloes helped to cover the many unfortunate ingredients being added to it to make it even cheaper. The Gin acts changed legislation to try to curb the ‘gin craze.’ Charles Dickens loved gin and punches and there are many legends connecting his literary works and social habits and excursions. A few years back I decided to bundle all my interests together and rebrand from Smy Chutney to Smy Goodness so that all my preserves, crafts, products and workshops could live together in one place. At Christmas-time and New Year we drink more of it than ever and it seems perfectly acceptable to be cracking open bottles of bubbly before noon or anytime you have guests round. It’s also the perfect gift to bring round, a ribbon tied round the iconic bottle. Bubbly is a great aperitif, can finish off a meal, be paired with liqueurs or drank on its own. Those bubbles can go straight to ones head…and what starts as giddiness…quickly moves into tipsiness…which is sure to end in headache if one too many glasses are enjoyed. We have the Romans to thank for planting vineyards in the Champagne region of France. The roots of champagne being linked to big celebrations were when the first King of France, the warrior, Clovis was baptised and crowned in Reims Cathedral on Christmas day 496 AD and with Reims being in the province of Champagne it flowed freely to celebrate the coronation and from 898 onwards, all French kings were crowned in Reims. With their botanical gardens at hand and the focus and time to dedicate towards their efforts we have monks to thank for many world renowned gastric delights. These include cheeses, confectionaries, cordials and champagnes. For example Dom Perignon, one of the most famous champagne in the world, was started in the 17th century by monks. Marquis de Saint-Évremond brought and elevated champagne to London society whilst he was exiled there in 1661. Bubbles and champagne are synonymous now but it was after became popular in London that the bubbles would eventually become fixed. Up to then, the bubbles had sometimes appeared… and were more likely to appear in bottles that had been shipped to England and had had the fermentation process halted and started with changes in temperature which led to left over sugars which caused carbon dioxide gas to build and would cause the wine to bubble once opened. Once it was established how to ensure the bubbles in each and every bottle champagne really took off in popularity in the 18th c. and with the help and power of French champagne houses still familiar to us today such as Moët & Chandon, Louis Roederer, Piper-Heidsieck and Taittinger they established a product that would symbolise luxury, style and celebration throughout the world with the help of the Parisian artistic, creative and literary elite who were lapping up champagne and depicting it in their works and lifestyles. In the 20th c. the champagne houses took these fashionable associations and created marketing campaigns that revived drinking champagne as a must have for all celebrations, with a focus on Christmas and New Years Eve. Champagne is obviously protected as an item produced only in Champagne but there are other 'bubbly alternatives at generally a lower price point such as Cava from Spain, Prosecco from Italy and sparkling wine from anywhere. Generally champagne is often described as yeasty and sweet with biscuit or brioche notes whole Cava can have earther tones and prosecco has descriptors of sweet and crisp. Prosecco is now taking over the bubbly game with everyone wanting to get in on sharing bottles with each other on nights out, get togethers, parties, pubs and certainly at Christmas and New Years. Prosecco is cheaper than champagne, more fashionable than cava and on the path to continue it’s rise in sales an popularity. Got a doozy for y’all this week. Went for a nice 3 hour hike in Cold Spring NY (Mt. Taurus). Previously, I’ve done most of my recording on my Roland R-26, which generally cuts our after I leave it much beyond the hour mark. This recording (captured on my Zoom H4n) was still recording when I returned over 3 hours later. My goal with this project was to never capture much less than hour-long sessions. If I do, it doesn’t get released, and that’s because I don’t think shorter sessions properly capture a space / time. This however, could revolutionize things a bit. Perhaps I can work my way up to 8 hour sessions to help those of you keen to find some sounds to sleep to. At any rate *end rant*. February 18th was our first glimpse at spring-to-come in 2017, with temperatures in the low 60s and so the trails were fairly packed. Recorder was set up not far off the beaten path, in fairly close proximity to the closest road and train tracks. You’ll hear a nice mix of the local wildlife, leaves rustling, a near-constant buzz of traffic in the distance, the occasional train flying by filled with New Yorkers looking for a weekend escape from their concrete jungle and the passers by on their way up to the summit via the trail. Enjoy. 1:00pm - 3:50pm 49° and rising (Low of 27° / High of 53°) Clear Skies Chance of Precipitation: 0% Wind: 7mph NW Humidity: 48% UV Index: 4

What Recorder to Buy? Michael is looking at different portable audio recorders. Is there much of a difference between the Roland R-05, the Zoom H4n and the Zoom H5. The Roland has a link and mic in (but not XLR). The H4n has two XLR inputs, and a line/mic in. The H5 has everything that the H4 has AND it has the ability to change the built in microphone. Speaking of those, they all have condensor microphones which can be used to record things on the road. If you are looking for the ability to record anything then the H4 and H5 are great choices. The H5 gives the ability to swap microphones and the ability to adjust levels is a little easier. The Roland R-05 is $199 The H4n is $269 The Zoom H5 is $269 The H4 and H5 allow you to add "markers" which make it easy to find spots in the recording which may decrease your editing time. It does seem weird that both models are the same price. I know at Same Day Music the H4 is $199. Also keep in mind that Same Day Music does not charge Sales tax (unless you in New Jersey). They also provide the ability to pay for your product in two installments intstead of one payment. I went to feedvalidator.com and it said the feed wasn't valid.  (In the end, it turns out I had pasted the URL of the mp3 into the wrong box). The problem is your old links that are in Google will go dead. The question is is it worth moving (and having to re-establish your Google presence). In Barry's case the tool he is using is very expensive.  What is a Compressor [1:07] A compressor (in a nutshell) makes the louder stuff softer, and the softer items louder so your volume is more level. The DBX286 that I use has the ability to boost the low end and the high end which really makes it sound great. phd-034 News Slate: Ten Years in your Ears - Special Podcast issue ----------------------- Mobile Podcasting Revisited John Morgan from letstalkmetaldetectingandtreasurehunting.com sent in a voicemail question to the new Voicemail hotine: I use (currently) a Roland R-05 recorder with an XLR to 3.5mm stereo cable from a Audio-Technica atr2100 mic. The trick I learned is to turn the gain WAY down when recording and get right up on the mic. This keeps the background sounds down a bit. Then in post-production, I boost up the volume using Audition after applying a bit of compression (not too much) and leave the background noise as it is. A little isn't bad. There is not really a good way to remove it without making the audio sound un-natural. ------------------------- Complicated website? Here is an alternate way to do it. Install a second wordpress install on a subdomain or a folder on your domain. Setup as a simple site with no crazy formatting. (2014 works great) You use this wordpress install to generate your feed and then use the embed code to put the player in your much more complicated website. That way you can do whatever you want to the main site. You don't even have to have it in wordpress, and it will have no effect on the RSS feed. ----------------------------- Microphone and Mixer give-away. This is show # 15 for April 18th, 2014 - Podcast Workflow at PHD Today I am answering a question from Mark. Mark Writes: “I am just thinking of starting a podcast and would really like to hear what goes into the production of your podcast. What software, hardware and workflow do you use?” I am going to answer your question step by step. I start out a few days before I record with an idea of what I'm going to cover in the next episode (most of the time). I begin by creating a document in Google Drive with the show name/number. I then paste in any questions I have received relating to that topic. This will be the basis of my Show Notes for the episode. I don't really use it as a script. Just sort of an outline (which is mostly good enough for shownotes). As far as equipment I use, I record mainly into my computer. I have a 27” iMac with Adobe Audition. I have a Mackie 1202VLZ3 mixer, Audiocom Pro XL Compressor, Limiter Gate. Hooked into that is my Heil Pr40 mic on a boom. To hook that to the computer, I use a griffen iMic for the Aux channel (the sound effects if I want to go live to the harddrive) and I use the line input on the mac from the mixer's output. I also plug the second output (the tape out) on the mixer to my Roland R-05 digital recorder. I use that as a backup recording. As a lot of people will tell you, you shouldn't rely on your computer because if you do, you will, someday, lose a recording. If it's just you, that isn't so bad, but if you are recording an interview, you may not be able to re-do it. I would say 90% of the time, I don't need the backup recording and I delete it after the episode is released. Here is where I do things one of two ways… I can, and sometimes do, record live to the hard drive. This is an old podcasting term for recording as if the show was a live radio show. Putting in the intros and other sounds in as you go so that when you hit stop, you are done. Very limited post-edit needed. The way I get the intros in is via that griffen iMic hooked to the mixer on another channel. I use a program called SoundBoard (for Mac) that I can load up my spots, music and whatever. It plays out the iMic and into the channel on my mixer and gets recorded on the computer and the recorder. The other way I do it (and this is most of the time) is record segments. Then in post edit, put in the intros, outros, ad spots and other things in post-edit. Either way is good and I have it setup both ways. In setting up the compressor, limiter, gate, I only use the Gate portion. This is the reason you don't hear anything when I'm not talking (or playing a track from the Soundboard program). It cuts the mic off at a certain level. It keeps the room noise off the recording when I'm not talking. This works well in a moderately noisy room, but will not sound right if there is too much noise in the room. Recording levels are also something you should watch for. I record at -12 to -6 db peaks. Then when I process the file, I add a little compression to the finished file and boost up the level to -3 on the peaks. This is the level that most radio stations (other than NPR) use for voice. The music on music stations sometimes pushes -0 on the peaks. I edit (if needed) in Audition. You can use Audacity (a free cross platform audio editor) and encode my mp3 at 96khz @ 44100hz sample rate. (not quite CD quality which is 128khz). This keeps the file smaller and I don't think anyone is going to notice on a voice only file. You can even go as low as 64 if you are tight on space for hosting. Once I have the file done, I take it into iTunes to write the ID3 tags. I made a playlist called “edit” and I drag it right in there. Right click on the file in itunes and select Get Info. I fill in the “info” tab and the “Artwork” tab (uploading my image to the file) Once I close the window, I am done and I upload and post the episode in wordpress using powerpress. This show brought to you by Blubrry.

Today we talk about setting up a premium podcast feed, what tools that I've used, (Thanks to Andrew for the question), in our interview segment we talk with Scott Eiland who start the baseball experience a little over a year ago. That podcast lead to him creating the "This week in wrestling" podcast. That platform lead him to now getting paid to produce another sports based show. It didn't happen over night, and there were some lessons learned along the way. Scott Eiland understands the power of podcasting. Auphonic Web Based Levelator I've talked about the Levelator software before. It's good for leveling out audio where there are slight differences in volume between a podcast host and guest. It works on both Mac and PC. I learned about Auphonic at the New Media Expo. It's a pretty cool FREE tool, and that is web based and performs many of the same tasks that the levelator software does (and more). You can process a wav file or an mp3 (or other files) and that goes to output as well. It will add ID3 tags to your files and if you are trying to create chapters in an mp3 file it can do that as well. Check it out at www.auphonic.com More Podcast Money #3 Book on Podcasting in Amazon Thanks to everyone who has purchased the book More Podcast Money. I had a blast writing it and I'm glad people are finding it helpful. If you search books for "podcast" it is currently ranked #3. For more information go to www.morepodcastmoney.com Premium Podcast Tools Andrew  asked about creating a premium podcast where one part would be free, and the other (deeper) episode would be premium. In regards to protecting the files, I have used Wishlist in the past, but when I wanted to "Drip" content, there is nothing that beats the features and support of Digital Access Pass. It's not the cheapest tool on the planet, but its always getting better, and has TOP NOTCH support.  I liked the community around wishlist, but for me I wanted the dripping feature. I've also used Magic Members which wasn't bad (dripping) but not as easy as Digital Access Pass. The other thing to think about is if you are breaking up an interview into parts, make sure each part can stand alone. I use to listen to a podcast that would just fade out the interview in the middle and ask you to subscribe. I found this just frustrated me. Also when you first start out you won't have an audience. Thus, you may be creating content for an audience that doesn't exist yet. With a tool like Digital Access Pass you can these in advance and have years worth of content ready to "Drip" when the audience does show up. Dave on the Interview Circuit Want to not only hear Dave Jackson but SEE him (with "Saturday hair!" ) check out this interview with Jim Collison on The Average Guy Network.
