Good morning, good evening, or g'day - depending on when you're listening to QNEWS and from where. I'm John VK4JPM, Secretary of the Darling Downs Radio Club, and this week we're brought to you by the letter "S" for "solstice". It's half-past 2026 already and from here the days get longer and the sun gets higher. Good news for anyone who bought a solar system a few months back and is wondering where all the energy went. The big news from the club is our next meeting. The topic is "contesting", which is a major thrust in Amateur Radio and one of the tools we have to keep the hobby relevant and very much alive. Make sure you put 13 July in your diary, and plan to attend either in person or by telepresence. Why? Our special guest, who will be with us in person for the evening, is Diane Main. Di is one of Australia's most prominent contesters. [She is] A contesting machine. Di brings organisation, passion, and a relentless focus on bringing MORE operators into field radio." You can expect lots of helpful information, encouragement and tips. Check the website for more information and details of the location. www.ddrci.org.au Now something slightly different, and here's an invitation from a sector adjacent to ham radio. Once upon a time pretty much every broadcast engineer had their ham ticket as well, and was active in the hobby. We all know that broadcast radio is a technology business, and community radio especially - without the mostly volunteer techs that keep stations running then nothing would happen. Technorama is the peak body for community radio technologists, and on 25 July Technorama will be running the Queensland leg of this year's roadshow in Broadbeach - intriguingly titled "Crisis Averted". It's a day of information, how-to sessions, discussions on how to avoid disaster, and a heap of social networking. The cost of attendance is so low that you're going to have to check the site because you won't believe me - less than $90 even if you're not a member of Technorama but cheaper if you are. Hams can play a very important part in running radio stations, and where else would be allowed to play with transmitters ranging to 10kW or more? And you probably have, or could learn, lots of skills that are really useful. Check out their website at technorama.org.au and follow the dots. What do you have to lose? 24-26 July, in the heart of the Gold Coast, and lots of fun. Check technorama.org.au for all the detail on that. This week's challenge in the 52 week ham challenge is so challenging that I wonder what they were thinking. It reads "Open a repeater... without using dedicated features of your radio for opening repeaters". The most important dedicated feature is the transmit button, and I assume you are allowed to use that. The hint shows emojis for a megaphone and someone whistling. OK, that's weird. Even with a megaphone, I don't know anyone who could whistle at 91.5Hz. But... maybe they want you to find or build an external CTCSS generator, and that could be very useful both as a project and as a way of rejuvenating an older transmitter that doesn't support access tones. Have a go. And speaking of which: the club's repeater VK4RDD will require a 91.5Hz tone from 7 July - that's soon; it's just a bit over two weeks. We've updated all the documentation to say that a tone is required, so don't get caught out if you're a regular user of the repeater. 91.5Hz CTCSS needed on VK4RDD from Tuesday 7 July. For all info in this bulletin, and many things not mentioned, your moment of truth is at ddrci.org.au and look for interesting entries on the scroller at the top of the page. That's it for this week. Club 2m net coming up on VK4RDD at 1000 on Sunday mornings, and dead silence in the evenings. I'm John VK4JPM, and I'll be back next week with more from the Darling Downs Radio Club. See you then!

Sad news to impart that Col Christiansen VK4VIK lost his battle with cancer in Townsville University Hospital on Wednesday, 23rd July. Col hailed from the Charters Towers City suburb of Broughton and had been under treatment in Charters Towers and Townsville for 14 months, often shuttling from medical treatment in the big smoke back to his beloved workshop and radio shack. Regional hams will miss the regular reports from Col and will mourn the loss of someone who, despite age, made good use of technology from heritage to the bleeding edge. Vale Col Christiansen VK4FVIK/VK4VIK - Another Silent Key I'm John VK4JPM Secretary of the Darling Downs Radio Club, and this is our bit for QNEWS for week of 27 July. With the Club's AGM coming up, now is when we need remind everyone that it's also membership renewal time. Technically, all memberships expire at the end of June, but we've been holding back sending the renewal reminder because we have been working towards a big improvement in our membership process. And it's time for some exciting news. By the time you hear this, a new online system will be in place to allow membership applications and renewals be fully completed online, using any device that supports a browser. Technorama is the peak body for all the technologists who support community broadcasting in Australia. We're getting together in Toowoomba over 8, 9 and 10 August 2025. TR25 would be a great way to meet your colleagues in person (maybe for the first time) and to see how amateur radio and broadcasting intersect. Both fields can feed from each other, and the theory you learn to get the amateur radio licence is perfect to help you do a better job in broadcasting. Who knows - it could turn into a career! Hello, I'm Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I've been thinking. The world is really a dynamic place in which we live. Take technology and the developments that are being reported almost daily. Regardless of the politics surrounding climate change, the market forces of industry are driving changes to how things are done. For instance take the popular mode of personal transport, the motor car. Over the years the body shape and materials used in construction have changed and the internal combustion engine has been developed to try and keep the air we breathe cleaner than it had been allowed to go. Now the almost fetished single minded goal of some acolytes has been the development and promotion of electric motive power. What we seem to hear less of is the various alternatives such as engines running on various hydrogen based chemistry and hopefully prevent the disasters of self immolation from the lithium based early technology. Here is something that is happening as we live and breathe and we can be the interested spectators and take part in the choices that may select which items or technologies survive to contest the most “green” solution to pollution. Why am I talking about motor cars when we are promoting and enjoying amateur radio? When we engage a speaker it may be one of our fellows or a stranger to our club but it is certain if they have a favourite topic they will be able to illustrate the subject. Just because we like to hide behind the nerdy electronics banner should not mean that that is the only area that can be discussed. Hams are well known for having a broad range of interests and expanding the personal knowledge base with a good presentation sets the ground for further thinking. We don't have to be tied to just history subjects directly related to AR and we don't have to be bamboozled by technical detail that sails over our heads. There is the happy medium where learning and entertainment can live together. There is the possibility that something picked up during a talk and Q&A can provide the answer to a matter that you hadn't found the answer for. We can all live in hope of a good time with our fellow enthusiasts. I'm Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and that's what I think, how about you?

Welcome to the Darling Downs Radio Club's contribution to QNEWS for Sunday, 20 July. I'm John VK4JPM, Secretary of the Club. It's a month since the equinox, and I bet all of us with solar panels are looking forward to the sun being higher in the sky. Speaking of solar, last week's talk on The Grid by Peter VK4EA was brilliant. It appears that our telepresence outreach is improving, as we had a full house in the room and almost as many people online. We're working to keep that up, and it's going to take a bit of money. One of the things that makes life enjoyable is having things to look forward to. It may be family celebrations or special event days, and we get the expectation that something good is going to happen. This is true of our participation in amateur radio, too. For many a childhood memory has been the surprise of an unexpected gift for a birthday or Christmas present that floods the mind with gladness. Weddings and births, and other rites of passage can be both happy and nostalgic. However, there is an element of preparation in achieving this kind of satisfaction as an adult, and dare I say, without taking away any sense of spontaneity, laying the road for a good outcome. It may be a surprise for a loved one or achieving a goal in getting an asset to pursue a dream. The 4x4, the tinny or whatever, has been the goal that creates a sense of achievement when you can look at it and realise the effort to get it has paid off. Whilst this has been framed in general terms, this same goal setting can frame a level of progress and satisfaction for we radio hams. I can remember how pleased I was in finishing my home-made antennas and seeing that they worked beyond expectations. The new, to me, rig that extended my operating capacity and allowed me to enjoy new modes all gave that sense of achievement, which means personal success. When I look around at the opportunities and variations to radio and electronics today, the technology has grown amazingly during my participation in AR, but the scope of what we can do and the successes we can enjoy have likewise increased. Within a formal structure, such as a radio club, it is necessary to work out a schedule and create a planner of events so that members can plot their activities. At home, well, we don't need to be so well structured, provided we aren't in the habit of forgetting. Still, recording coming events is a wise precaution, especially if you live in a household and need to accommodate the needs of other members. So I wonder how many of us have listed the events that we hope to take part in? I'm old-fashioned and still use a paper diary and a flip-over calendar to keep track of things. I could lose my phone and still have these appointments recorded. So I wonder how many clubs have filled in a yearly diary for members to complete? Good communication within clubs is vital, as we all know from experience that life has a way of intruding on our daily activities. The unexpected should really be the expected, I find as the years progress. I would like to think that we could all be on top of things most of the time, but experience suggests there will be times when events take precedence. Having a plan of what is ahead is not only a sound preparation for success, but it also allows us some wriggle room when things get messy. I'm Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and that's what I think. How about you?

Send us a text4X4: WILLIAM WYLER. #3: THE BIG COUNTRY(Note: Don't skip the theme song this week)TGTPTU Host Ryan's Willie gets a glow-up with THE BIG COUNTRY (1958), the third in our cultivated William Wyler collection.Shot in glorious Technicolor on large-format Technorama to set it apart from the glut of midcentury black-and-white television Westerns, the big-budget film was not a financial success despite winning one, after being nominated for two, Academy Awards and starring at the time four-time Oscar nominee Gregory Peck in the lead role of James McKay, a stranger who comes into town (thanks, Ken! 50-50 odds on this plot by your own estimation), who reunites with his fiancée out on the American frontier only to be hazed by her father's foreman Steve Leech played by Charlton Heston (no Oscar noms at the time but a big win the next year on Wyler's next film Ben-Hur, which, btw, did you hear someone died filming the chariot race?) and later to fall in love/respect/mutual ownership of property with school teacher and Big Muddy landowner Julie Maragon played by Oscar-nominated Jean Simmons (not that one, it's spelled differently, Thomas). The voice and the eyebrows, the legendary singer and thanks to this film an Oscar-winner, Burl Ives plays Rufus Hannassey, the patriarch of a rival company of cowpunchers who also uses the Big Muddy and gets into a scuffle with Peck character's father-in-law-to-be. This spat spirals out of control, Peck's character presents the view with a confident pacificist, and there's a good plot summary on Wikipedia and elsewhere. What you can't get elsewhere is Ryan's special intro with lyrics and deep cuts even more deeply researched for you cineasts, Thomas's pun on seamen, re-ranking the Major, a Hal Ashby connection, and a surprise new ghost guest added to the pod's lore and collection when Charlton Heston's noncorporeal agent visits the studio. The four hosts on this 4x4 do their best to discuss performative masculinity and the connection to war while ensuring they get their f*cking auto-assigned EXPLICIT CONTENT WARNING from their AI censors.  “Now tell me, you: what did we prove?"  THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Bluesky: @mrkoral.bsky.socialYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!):Ken: Ken KoralRyan: Ryan Tobias

Danny plays while the Venus Arms burns. Cap continues the tale of Danny Hillcrest and the arcade game. The Stranger listens as Cap explains that Danny had become so good at "Clinical Catastrophe", he started to attract a small following. But these groupies were not adding anything to the bottom line at the Venus Arms Hotel and Towers. Ms. Falmacher decided she must come up with a plan to put an end to the misadventures of Bedpan Bob. From Sphere to Eternity In the final chapter of our musical story, Brax Higgins has activated the mysterious Waffle Batter sphere. As a result, all the other spheres from The Tunnels have surrounded him, forming an impressive, whirling wall of light. It seems he may now have  unlimited power. Buzz "Scoop" Crackerjack Thomas tries to find out what the disgraced former Little Wicker Baskets executive plans to do. And Mayor Rory, along with a rather disgruntled mob, have arrived at One Pasta Place. It seems that The Tunnels are the source of all the water and power drains in town. The Mayor demands that Cindy shut The Tunnels down. Things certainly look bleak. Can anyone save Middling Fair?
