It's so good to be back with you bringing another series of Making Stitches Podcast to your ears!My guest for this episode is Felicity aka Felix Ford, an artist who works in colour, sound and yarn. I first heard about Felix's work when a mutual friend contacted me and suggested she might be a good guest for the podcast – she was right! Before our chat which features in this episode, Felix asked to send me a couple of her books and an invitation to join one of her online courses so I could get a proper feel for her work. I signed up for the ‘Colour at Play' Course in the hope I would be able to improve my skills at marrying colours together when I design a crochet project. In addition to this, I discovered that Felix had a podcast herself – the KNITSONIK Podcast in which she recorded sounds and wove them together with interviews, chats about her work and her own musical compositions.I really enjoyed getting to know Felix through her work, and then by chatting to her late last year ready for this podcast episode. It was genuinely joyful to hear about Felix's experiences including learning to colour match oil paint to a basket of eggs, how designing yarny covers for her walking stick diverted conversations with strangers away from her disability to her creativity and how her work with sound, colour and yarn has led her to setting up the KNITSONIK school.I have to say a huge thank you to Felix for being so generous with her time and for allowing me to use some of her music in the podcast episode. You can find the KNITSONIK podcast here if you would like to hear more of Felix's audio work. (I can especially recommend the Shetland Wool Week episode)You can find the KNITSONIK website here. For the full show notes for this episode, please visit the Making Stitches Podcast website. To join the mailing list for the Making Stitches Newsletter, please click onto this link. The theme music is Make You Smile by RGMusic from Melody Loops .The Making Stitches logo was designed by Neil Warburton at iamunknown. You can support Making Stitches Podcast with running costs through Ko-fi.Making Stitches  Podcast is supported by the Making Stitches Shop which offers Making Stitches Podcast merchandise for sale as well as Up the Garden Path crochet patterns created by me & illustrated by Emma Jackson.Making Stitches Podcast is presented, recorded and edited by Lindsay Weston.

Send us a textWhat do sound and knitting have in common? You'd be forgiven for thinking not much, but both have been constant companions across the life and career of sound artist and knitter, Felicity Ford also know as Felix. Join sobel as she visits Felix in her St Leonard's home to talk about her journey into field recording, soundscape composition and using this skillset to document the process of wool production. Felix also shares her perspective on why celebrating domestic sounds is a feminist pursuit, her maverick approach to disruption traditional notions of sonic art and how all of us can find a little magic in the everyday. In fact, isn't that what art is all about? Felix would argue. Felix also runs her own online knitting school called Kitsonik, so it only felt right for Isobel to be taught some knitting while we were there. Happy Halloween everyone! We've got a bonus podcast episode for your listening pleasure today, and hopefully it will whet your appetites just a bit more for Yarnporium! Sponsor: The Loveliest Yarn Company is a new online yarn shop bringing you the loveliest yarn and knitting accessories.  Buying yarn online can be a bit fraught so they have gathered the best into one place.  They have knit, washed and worn everything so people know it’s all been tried and tested by knitters. The Loveliest Yarn Company stock artisan hand dyed yarn from Life in the Long Grass, organic merino from Rosy Green Wool, some great stalwarts of the yarn world from West Yorkshire Spinners, irresistible accessories from Merchant and Mills and lots more.  All from theloveliestyarncompany.co.uk. Podcast listeners can get 10% off in October, November and December with the code YITCEnabled2016.  If you aren’t shopping for yarn at the moment, sign up for their newsletter on the site.  News and Events:  The are no new events. Just the Yarnporium. Happening November 5th and 6th. November 1st is the last day to get your early bird pricing on advance tickets.  After that you'll have to pay £10 for a day ticket and £15 for a weekend ticket. OK, it's not entirely true that nothing else is going on... 10-13th November: Geeky Puffin Knit Palooza, Farnham - classes, marketplace and a London Yarn Crawl led by Alli! 12th November: Festiwool, North Herts College, Hitchin Entire month: we hope you’ll join along with Felicity Ford of Knitsonik and Louise Scollay of Knit British in the celebration of all things wool that is WOVEMBER. What we’re working on:  Rachel is knitting Green Memories by La Maison Rililie.  Allison is comfort knitting. Destressing with a Hogwarts scarf for Harry and the slowly growing Garter Goodness shawl by Stephen West.  More Yarnporium awesome-ness: There are a few more Yarnporium special events to highlight: Pom Pom Quarterly will be hosting designer signings with Stephen West and Justyna Lorkowska! Justyna there on Saturday from 11am to 1pm and Stephen from 1-3pm. Stephen will also be around on Sunday from noon to 2pm.  A Yarn Story will be bringing in an uber special exclusive: La Bien Aimée hand-dyed yarn from Paris. AYS is bringing a selection of colours on the Merino Singles base. They will also be bringing yarns from Hedgehog Fibres, The Fibre Co., Julie Asselin and SweetGeorgia Yarns.  Inspiration Knits designer Louise Zass-Bangham will be bringing her book Knit Play Colour along with yarns for many of the patterns. She will have a wide selection of yarn from the Countess Ablaze (who NEVER does yarn shows but sells online only or out of her Manchester studio) and also a wide variety from Eden Cottage Yarns. It's a lovely way for both of these yarn companies to be at the Yarnporium when they couldn't otherwise!  Midwinter Yarns have a new Aran weight yarn in 6 natural shades called Suomivilla that they are bringing to the Yarnporium. They also have official Baa-ble Hat kits that include the original pattern by Donna Smith, or people may be interested in getting the yarn to make Donna's new hat and cowl pattern!  Kettle Yarn Co. are debuting their brand new Baskerville DARK yarn which contains more Gotland than the original for added depth and halo to Linda's already gorgeous colours. She's offering 10% off purchases of Baskerville DARK skeins to the first 10 customers who use the codeword "GOTLANDFOREVER".   We're also delighted that designer Karie Westermann is joining us all the way from Glasgow. Karie doesn't get down south too often to teach so we feel it's a real coup to have her! Even better, Karie has designed a brand new workshop that is being taught for the first time at the Yarnporium: Knitting the Landscape. In this workshop Karie will help knitters explore how to express their memories and thoughts of a specific place through their knitting using texture, stitch patterns and colour.  While we're crazy for all the yarn fumes that will be at the Yarnporium, it's also a perfect weekend to start Christmas gift shopping and many of our vendors will have non-yarny items for all the BKFFs out there include Wendy Fowler's gorgeous yarn bowls, glass stitch markers brought in by C.C. Almon of JavaPurl Designs, and wonderful project bags by The Little Grey Girl. Joe's Toes and The Knitting Shed also have fantastic kits if you'd like to make something for little people on your list.   We're also excited to welcome new vendors Mahliqa (knitted jewellery kits), Chunky Row and Once Upon a Time Skeins as well as local to London yarn dyers Travelknitter, Whimzy, The Wool Kitchen and Easyknits and local fibre dyer Porpoise Fur!  Finally, Sarah from Crafts from the Cwtch will be taking over our Instagram feed on the Saturday of the show - be sure to say hi! Woolly Wovember:  WOVEMBER is an amazing grass-roots movement to recognise and celebrate wool in all it's forms. Read their open letter to the Campaign for Wool and see how to get involved. We're also going to take part in Vestvember - come join in! *** You can find the podcast on iTunes and Stitcher Radio and us on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, in our Yarn in the City group on Ravelry, or in person on Wednesday nights at our knit night at The Goat on the Rise between 7 and 10pm. Now that we’re a few weeks into 2016 we’re curious as to how you’re all doing with your resolutions or goals for this year. We’ve also been doing some thinking about our own plans for Yarn in the City this year and had our own thoughts that we wanted to share with you.  Shout outs:  C. C. from the Geeky Girls Podcast. The Dublin Brooks Hotel Knit Night, who introduced Alli to the beers of Galway Hooker. Best. Brewery. Name. Ever. What’s Happening:  30th January - Renée Callahan of East London Knit will be teaching Brioche Basics and Brioche Next Steps classes at A Yarn Story in Bath. 30th January - Woolly Wormhead is teaching two classes at Knit With Attitude, a Knitting in the Round Masterclass and her Turning Sideways class. 31st January - there is a Learn to Darn class happening at Wild & Woolly. Participants are encouraged to bring a woolen garment that needs mending and will learn both invisible and decorative techniques by a professional Japanese clothes mender.  4th-7th February – the annual French stitching show L’Aiguille en Fete takes place at the Porte de Versailles in Paris. This show is jammed with all kinds of inspiration! 5th – 7th February – Purlescence is hosting a weekender featuring the KNITSONIK Colourwork and Bespoke Yokes workshops with our good friends Felicity Ford and Brenda Dayne. If you missed Gwlana last fall, Felicity and Brenda are cramming their classes into two full days (and a Friday evening kick off) at Purlescence’s new location in Oxfordshire.   6th - 7th February – Rachel is teaching an Introduction to Drop Spindling and How to Knit a Sexy Sweater class at A Yarn Story.  10th February – It’s the next Late Night Knitty Lock-in of 2016 over at Wild & Woolly. Check out the details on their website.  13th - 14th February – Cécile Balladino is teaching her Eclectic Gipsyland crochet class at Loop. These are the same class but offered on two different days. The class will teach Cécile’s techniques for lace motifs, joining as you go, surface crochet and more. This is not a beginner’s class and you will be expected to already know how to crochet.  20th February – For those of you up north, Karie Westermann is teaching her Two-Handed Colourwork for Fair Isle and Nordic Style Colourwork class at Be Inspired Fibres in Edinburgh.   19th - 21st February – Unravel is happening at Farnham Maltings. We will be there with two stands – a joint Porpoise Fur/Yarn in the City stand where we will be debuting the London Craft Guide! We’ve just found out that our stand will be located in the Barley Room, so we do hope you’ll come and say hello!  26th - 28th February – Joeli’s Kitchen Retreat in Manchester. Featuring classes with Kate Atherley, Karie Westermann, Joeli and other great teachers, as well as a mini marketplace on the Sunday that will include Countess Ablaze.  Giveaway: Speaking of Unravel – we still have a pair of tickets to giveaway. To enter, leave a comment in the show notes for Episode 28 and let us know what you’re looking forward to seeing at the show. We’ll draw a name on February 1st and announce the winner on the first podcast episode in February. Contest note: this pair of tickets is for a single day’s entry to the show and does not include any travel to Farnham. Good luck!  Save the Date! We’ve finally figured out the date for this year’s Great London Yarn Crawl, which will be held on Saturday, 10th September. Mark the date in your calendars now and stay tuned for more details this spring!  What we’re working on: Rachel is working on a sample of the Waterloo Mitts, our pattern from the London Craft Guide, in Eden Cottage Yarns Whitfeld DK. She is also working up her Knit a Sexy Sweater class sample by knitting the Middlefield Pullover by Melissa LaBarre from New England Knits, in Elann Peruvian Highland Chunky. She's finished knitting her Dark & Stormy, but the buttons and grosgrain ribbon are still to be done. She's finished spinning for the first Unravel hat and is almost ready to cast on. The first stage of the project is in her Design Diaries segment on her blog. Allison has her first FO of 2016 off the needles – the Quaking Aspen shawl by Courtney Kelley. She’s also finished spinning some Porpoise Fur handspun from the Lab Goddess Fibre Club and is working it up into the Grown Up Booties by Ysolda. She is also almost finished with her She’s a Waterfall shawl by Dani Sunshine.  2016 - The Do-Over: After last episode’s chat about themes for the year and having a focus for this year, we decided that we wanted to come up for one for our year. There are already lot’s of things out about being creative this year, all of which are great. But we were wondering if there was something we could do that would tie in to what Yarn in the City is all about. We also wanted it to be something that anyone could take part in, no matter how big or small, and in whatever way felt right and personal to them.  We’ve been inspired by Calgary, Canada’s mayor Naheed Nenshi, who challenged his council and the citizens of Calgary to do Three Things for their community as a way to increase civic engagement (an overview here). The idea was simple: if there are over a million people in the city of Calgary and every person did three things to make the city better –image how amazing an already great city would be.  When we were thinking about what we wanted to focus on in 2016 we looked back to the things and themes that resonated with us last year. And they were stories of people within our yarn and fibre community doing great stuff that makes it better for everyone. Whether it’s people who are spreading the passion of wool like the Wovember team, or podcasters likeShinybees and Curious Handmade, who demonstrate than knitting podcasts can build community, or show organisers like Jo and Mica who saw a void in their own community and created the Edinburgh Yarn Festival to fill it.  As a community we’re sharing knowledge and learning from each other and asking questions. So this year we want to encourage you to do three things for the world wide yarn and fibre community. Think about what is important to you. Think about what you’re good at. Talk to your friends and figure out how you can make a difference, however small.  Then we’d like you to do those things, and tell us about them on a dedicated Three Things for the yarn and fibre community thread on our Ravelry board, or on our Facebook page. You can even tweet or Instagram at us. Use the hashtag#3thingsforyarnlove so we can see what you're up to and cheer you on! And once you've done three things, do three more, and three more, and three more... As always, please let us know what you think by tweeting, liking, or loving our posts when you see them go up on Twitter,Facebook and Instagram – or even better, leave a comment in the shownotes, post on our Ravelry board or send us an email at hello@yarninthecity.com.  You can find us on iTunes or Stitcher Radio (and please consider leaving a review for us!), or download us directly from the Yarn in the City website.   Our Knit Night is every Wednesday from 7:00pm to 10:00pm at The Goat on the Rise in Clapham Junction. We'd love to have you join us! Music credits (all available on NoiseTrade) Howlin' At Nothing (Live in Denver), S. O. It's November folks, and that means it's time to celebrate ALL THINGS WOOL! In this episode we update you on events for the rest of the year, reveal details about the Bath Christmas Craft Crawl, make a brief foray into the realm of holiday knitting, and have a chat with Rachel Atkinson of My Life in Knitwear about shepherds, the UK wool industry and being informed consumers. News and Events: 1st - 30th November - Wovember, a celebration of wool spearheaded by Felicity Ford, Tom of Holland and Kate Davies. 5th November - the kickoff of Curious Handmade's Knitvent 2015! YITC listeners can get a 15% discount on the collection by using the code "YITCknitvent15", which is good until 30th November - signups will open on 3rd November. Thank you Helen! 10th/17th November - Anna Maltz, aka Sweaterspotter, is teaching a lace and colourwork class for her popular Solja sweater at Wild & Woolly. 14th November - A Yarn Story's One Year Anniversary Party. 14th November - We will be at the Porpoise Fur booth at Festiwool, at North Hertforshire College in Hitchin. Also exhibiting are a number of vendors from the Pop Up Marketplace (Travelknitter, we're looking for you!), and our Knit Night compatriot Third Vault Yarns. 15th November - Clare Devine, of Yarn and Pointy Sticks, is teaching "2 at a time anything" at Knit with Attitude. 15th/22nd November - Brioche Stitch Basics with Renée Callahan of East London Knit at Loop. 28th November - the Bath Christmas Craft Crawl! Now with all the details on the Event Page. What we're working on: Allison has a bunch of projects on the go: she's finished the first sleeve of Grettir by Jared Flood, and should have the second done this week. She's also been working on her Quaking Aspen Shawl in The Fibre Co Acadia, and has started Hamlet the Cheetah from Edward's Menagerie. Also on the list of WIPs is the hoodie for a small boy in Canada that needs to be finished ASAP. On the spinning front, she's spun up her Alpha, Beta, Gamma Finn from the Lab Goddess Fibre club into singles and is going to ply them soon. Rachel has finished a Lush cardigan for her new niece, and some fingerless mitts from some handspun Suffolk in the "Flamingo" colourway. She is now onto the front of her Angostura vest by Ysolda Teague, in Blacker Yarns Cornish Tin. On the spinning front, she has been spinning like a possessed thing trying to get enough yarn to weave a bunch of scarves for Festiwool, and has spun up 8 oz of Corriedale, 4 oz of BFL and 4 oz of Fibre Club in the past couple of weeks.  Woolly Wovember: Rachel Atkinson published a post on her blog recently titled "Fleeced" in which she talked about a side of the UK wool industry of which many wool-using crafters may be unaware. We got a chance to talk to Rachel about her story, and discuss where the project is going and what we, as consumers, can do to help. Many thanks to Rachel for taking the time to speak with us, and we will be following along with her project with great interest!   Off the air, you can find us on Ravelry, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest. Please leave a review for us on iTunes or listen to us on Stitcher Radio, and don't hesitate to share your thoughts and feedback with us. We are always out and about, so come say hi at any of the events we're attending if you get a chance! Everyone is also more then welcome to come join our Wednesday night knit group from 7-9 pm (or longer) upstairs at The Goat on the Rise, Clapham SW11 1EQ.  Music credits (all available on NoiseTrade)Morning Light - The Dirty Guv'nahsLoneliness & Alcohol - Jars of ClayHands & Hearts - Katrina Stone

Shout outs: Thanks to Deb, who applauded our musical choices, and asked how we pick the songs, so we go on at length about that. Many congratulations to Catherine, our guest on Episode 8, who welcomed her new granddaughter last week! And a shout out from us to the people in our lives (in the knitting world and outside) who are having a bit of a hard time right now - we're thinking of you all. What's going on: 15-16th May: I Knit Fandango, Royal Horticultural Halls, London. We will be there at the Porpoise Fur booth - come say hi! 15-17th May: Gwlana, a knitting retreat in Pembrokeshire, Wales with Brenda Dayne of Cast On and Felicity Ford of Knitsonik. 16-17th May: John Arbon Open Weekend, South Molton, Devon. 23rd May: Highland Wool Festival, Dingwall Mart. 25th May: The Shipston on Stour Wool Fair, Shipston on Stour, South Warwickshire 30-31st May: Proper Woolley, Holsworthy, Devon. 20 June: the Brighton Knit and Make Social - come down to the beach with us for a day of hanging out and relaxing! What we're working on: Allison is working on a Big Brother Sweater for a newly-minted big brother, and she's going to be test knitting a cowl for Rachel in Kettle Yarn Co's new Islington DK as soon as Rachel gets a move on and writes up the pattern. She's started a new scarf with some YFP Shetland handspun (leftovers from Rachel's Nymphalidea) and a gorgeous grey DK out of stash. Cleaning up the office netted her some un-catalogued stash hiding away, so she's updated that. She's also been spinning and getting excited about Susan Anderson's book The Spinner's Book of Yarn Designs. Rachel has been dyeing. And dyeing. And dyeing some more. She's also knit up the KYC Cowl prototype (will be released at the end of June), and has done a bit of spindling on her Massive Spindle Sweaterlot. Because spindle spinning a sweater's worth of yarn is a good idea. Really. But mostly she's been dyeing. Upcoming excitement: Our special feature this week is all about upcoming events, specifically I Knit Fandango and our next Yarn in the City event - a mini-crawl in Brighton on 20 June. We highlight vendors we're looking forward to seeing at the Fandango, and talk a bit about what will be on the Porpoise Fur stand. We also chat about the Brighton trip, and the shops involved. This is going to be a very mellow and low-key event, and we really hope you can join us! Tickets are available now.   As always you can find us on Ravelry, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest. We will be collecting again for Refuge this year, so please bring any and all charity items to the kick off party at the Yarn in the City Pop Up Marketplace on 5th September. We also recently learned about AYME (the Association of Young People with ME), an organization that supports the estimated 25,000 children and young people in the UK who suffer from myalgic enchephalomyelitis, also known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. AYME is launching an awareness campaign called "Knit a Tulip for ME", with a goal of collecting one knitted tulip for every ME-affected young person in the UK in 2015. So far, they've collected 5,000 woolen tulips, and they are holding an official launch on 14th May at the Double Tree by Hilton London - Chelsea with a display of some of the tulips already contributed. The campaign also has a Justgiving page, if you'd like to make a donation. You can also email Jackie (scroll down for the email address) for the pattern and a sponsorship form. There are a number of other charity knitting opportunities out there, including Knit for Peace, which supports people in India, Pakistan and Rwanda. Allison is working on the Beeswax Hat by Amy van de Laar, in some gorgeous new Plump DK from Mrs. Moon,  and the Helix Cable Vest by Shiri Mor. She finished her Garter Squish Blanket (to the tune of +2000 yds out of stash!), and her sheep have mostly stayed cold, although she did get some gorgeous fabric at the Knitting & Stitching Show at Olympia.Rachel is almost done with Latticewing Version 3 (to be released soon!), worked in some lovely (green) Canopy Fingering from The Fibre Company. Her Windmill Bay Stole is almost through the middle lace section, and she's finished a woven handspun scarf (with Hello Yarn Fiber Club yarn, of course). She's been distracted from finishing things by her new Christmas toy, courtesy of her wonderful mother: a Classic Carder. Card all the things!!!!Cold Sheep Update:We've been pretty good at our cold sheep efforts, although Rachel was struck by a bolt of inspiration which resulted in a Baa Ram Ewe order (she needed the proper colour of a particular yarn!). However, we have agreed that "work" stash (for designing or samples) is quite separate from "personal" stash, so she has been given a pass for the moment. We also did a bit of swapping at The Muse Connection Volume 1, put on by A Playful Day and Curious Handmade. Alli's offering wasn't snatched up, so she gifted it to a friend to make up for the skein she selected at the swap. Rachel left two skeins and brought home two skeins, but ended up with more yardage then she swapped out. Hmmmm....Also a bit about our Yarn in the City 10K team (details here). Dr Felicity Ford (Artist, Oxford Brookes) Abstract With influences as diverse as Rebecca Solnit, Kate Davies, Brandon LaBelle and Pauline Oliveros, Felicity Ford’s KNITSONIK projects connect and extend dialogues within contemporary scholarship of knitting and sounds. Emphasising the sense of place perceptible in both wool and field recordings, Felicity explores how creative knitterly and sonic activities can be incorporated into daily life to positively emphasise connections between the sensing body and its territory: knitting and field recording are framed as cultural practices that can actively inform and shape our sense of place. For the Civic Matters lecture series, Felicity will contextualise and explore recent ventures pertinent to these themes such as the KNITSONIK Stranded Colourwork Sourcebook – a crowd-funded publication on the theme of translating your everyday environment into stranded colourwork and Listening to Shetland Wool – a lecture presentation given at Shetland Wool Week exploring how listening to sounds can help us apprehend textiles in the specific geographical and cultural context of Shetland.

This boo was recorded at The Museum of Domestic Design and Architecture, and features the voices of Felicity Ford (sound artist) and Emma Shaw (preventative conservation officer) discussing some conservation work involving the flattening of 2 different types of wallpaper for an upcoming exhibition, entitled Sonic Wallpaper. Some sections of wallpaper in the MoDA collection are still in rolls and need to be flattened. These include a design which features stone arches in a kind of faux architecture pattern, and a flocked paper. In the boo you hear Emma Shaw discussing how glass, blotting paper and time are used to flatten the flocked paper, and how a dahlia spray will be used to flatten the other sample. The sounds in the recording I have published here are of myself and Emma discussing the conservation work; of the hum of the air-conditioning in the conservation room; and of the materials involved in preserving the wallpaper. I like the recording for its quiet sense of industry, and for the way it evidences materials and tools and the preservation of the past.
