“Don't go chasing shadows, Arthur.”Adapting a Classic Ghost Story for the Big ScreenThe Woman in Black, based on Susan Hill's 1983 novel of the same name, has been adapted for the stage, television, and radio. In 2012, James Watkins directed a feature film version starring Daniel Radcliffe in his first major role since the Harry Potter series. With a talented team behind the camera and a compelling lead actor, The Woman in Black aimed to bring a classic ghost story to life for a new generation. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue the 2013 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards Best Actor Nominees series with a conversation about The Woman in Black.Radcliffe's Post-Potter Performance and the Film's Ghostly AtmosphereIn our discussion, we explore Daniel Radcliffe's performance as Arthur Kipps, a young lawyer grappling with grief and tasked with settling the estate of the mysterious Alice Drablow. Radcliffe's portrayal marks a significant departure from his iconic role as Harry Potter, showcasing his range as an actor. We also delve into the film's effective use of atmosphere, from the eerie Eel Marsh House and causeway leading to it to the unsettling appearances of the titular specter. However, we note that the reliance on jump scares and horror tropes may detract from the overall impact of the story.Other Topics CoveredThe differences between the novel, previous adaptations, and the 2012 filmThe film's exploration of grief and lossThe effectiveness of the period setting and production designThe use of children in peril as a horror elementThe Woman in Black offers a haunting tale of a vengeful spirit and the devastating impact of loss. While the film may lean heavily on familiar ghost story conventions, it succeeds in creating a chilling atmosphere and showcasing Daniel Radcliffe's post-Potter acting chops. Despite some reservations about the ending and the reliance on jump scares, The Woman in Black remains a solid entry in the gothic horror genre and a testament to the enduring power of Susan Hill's original novel. For the first time in this series Andy & Martin turn their attention to the ghost story genre with an examination of the the critically acclaimed 1989 Nigel Kneale adaptation of Susan Hill's novella The Woman in Black. This version sees Adrian Rawlins as Arthur Kidd, Bernard Hepton as Sam Toomey and Pauline Moran as the spooky title character. Martin watched during the day with the lights on until the bulb went (!) while Andy watched in the evening and despite not being a horror fan wanted more jump scares and creepy bits than were ultimately delivered. Along the way they discuss, the workings of Eel Marsh House's generator, the stage play, wax cartridges, a tin soldier and the extent of the Woman in Black's power and reach, and inevitably, of course, this TV film's famous shock ending and that pre-ad break scare. The question is do the pair think tis adaptation lives up to its reputation? Click play if you dare!!! Next Time: The XYY Man

On Christmas Eve, while his family is sharing ghost stories around the fireplace, Arthur Kipps remembers his own horrible encounter with a haunting. Kipps, when he was a young and eager lawyer, was sent to Eel Marsh house to sort through the papers of the recently deceased widow, Mrs. Drablow. It should be a rather easy job, except Mrs. Drablow apparently didn't throw anything away. Even worse, none of the locals will help him or answer any of his questions, their fear of the house is so great. Added to this is the location of the home that is completely cut-off at high tide. All of this is confusing and annoying for Kipps. However, to make matters worse, he soon learns why the locals avoid the house and avoid speaking about it. Eel Marsh House is haunted by its painful past from the nursery to the surrounding marshes, including those pesky bumps and footsteps in the night, the ghostly cries of a dying child on the marshes, and, of course, the Woman in Black.  Recommended in this episode: the graphic novel adaptation of Octavia Butler's Kindred Please rate and review us, or better yet, tell a friend.  Our social media is @MonsterWrote on Twitter and Instagram.

“Mr Holmes, they were the footprints of a gigantic hound!” This week we’re reading Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes mystery ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’ and in a strange twist of events Rachael arrives underprepared while Paul has conducted extensive research! Rachael confesses that she left it until the last minute to read the book but attributes her mixed reaction to years of watching film and TV adaptations of this story which have drained away the element of surprise. Andy, a fan of the Sherlock Holmes stories, explains why a mystery with such a disappointing ending still stands out among Conan Doyle’s canon and Paul coerces everyone into admitting that Sherlock Holmes is a bit of a git. Andy recreates his experience of visiting 221B Baker Street and what a disappointment it was meeting the “real” Dr. Watson, while Rachael wonders whether a demon dog is any more cause for “brown trousers time” than a regular dog that still goes for your throat. And just what is a Grimpen Mire? Paul, of all people, has looked it up! Elsewhere, Rachael looks at some of literature’s greatest haunted houses, including ‘Jane Eyre’s Thornfield Hall, ‘The Woman in Black’s Eel Marsh House and Edgar Allan Poe’s House of Usher. This week’s scale: As dapper as a deerstalker or As stinky as a pipe filled with shag tobacco that’s been left to rot in the Grimpen Mire
