"Only one word of epilogue" [DANC]    Today we're joined by Bob Katz, BSI, the founder of The Epilogues of Sherlock Holmes, a scion society that spent over three decades exploring the world of 221B Baker Street. Bob named the group after the subhead of "His Last Bow," observing that an epilogue, after all, is something that follows — and for thirty years, the group followed the Great Detective through meetings dedicated to friendship and story discussions.  All of their meetings were held in the resonant walls of a Quaker meeting house, with the group soon adopting a two-story format, where discussions of two of Watson's cases were followed by unearthing the hidden links and echoes between them. Beyond the scholarly deep dives, the Epilogues were legendary for their informal, affordable atmosphere, fueled, in large part, by Peter McIntyre's celebrated homemade ice cream. Having now concluded their own Great Hiatus, the Epilogues will officially kick off a new chapter with their first online meeting later this year.  Join us as we discuss the group's history, the art of finding connections between stories, and their relaunch this coming May, when they invite a new generation of Sherlockians to join the conversation. “I was able to reach Baskerville Hall” [HOUN]  There are a handful of locations in the Sherlock Holmes stories that are regularly sought out by fans. Of course 221B Baker Street is at the top of the list, along with the Reichenbach Falls. For those who venture to the west, Baskerville Hall is always a source of inspiration.   But where exactly was it? Scholars have been debating that subject for decades, and in 1979 Howard Brody, BSI ("Anstruther") won the Morley-Montgomery Award for his paper that attempted to settle the matter. Back at 221B Baker Street, Holmes and Watson discuss the case. Holmes calls it a very simple case, and Watson is taken aback. Holmes goes on to explain his technique of reverse thinking. Working backwards from the results to arrive at the method. He explains in the Brixton road, he determined several details about the victim and the killer. He then, determined that the murder was a personal one, and not a political one, and the missing wedding ring guaranteed this. Holmes then explains that his telegram to the US gave him all of the other details of the case. Who was involved, and the details of Hope's trip to Europe. Holmes then assumed that the best way to learn a city, and follow someone would be to work as a cabbie, so he employed his street urchins to go to every cab company and ask for a man called hope. Watson urges Holmes to publish his findings to get credit for his brilliant detective skills, but it doesn't really interest him and to make matters worse, the Newspapers are already giving all of the credit to Lestrade and Gregson.

Watson, still recovering from his time in Afghanistan, studies his new roommate. Holmes seems quiet and solitary, and he sinks occasionally into a stupor that suggests he could be a narcotic user, but Watson dismisses this thought. Holmes has a lot of knowledge in certain areas like poisons, and criminal cases, but has no knowledge about what Watson deems to be common knowledge, like that the Earth revolves around the sun. Holmes also seems to be often visited by many unknown people from all sorts of different classes and creeds. One morning, Watson wakes up early, before Sherlock leaves for the day, and reads the newspaper. A section has been notated, and Watson reads it. The author claims, that a studies man can learn anything about a person or a situation if only they are observant enough. Watson ridicules the article. Holmes announces that he wrote it, and then goes to explain that the observations made in that article and the ones he uses every day for his work and reveals that the visitors to the apartment are his clients. When Watson exclaims disbelief, Holmes then goes on to explain how he knew that Watson came from Afghanistan. After this a man comes up the stairs with a letter for Holmes.

New episode out now, and it's our 100th episode! We celebrate by finally playing a board game together, the 1975 game 221B Baker Street: The Master Detective Game. With a board similar to Clue, we read a mystery card at the start (in this instance, “The Adventure of the Unholy Man”) and then roll the die to travel throughout London's different locations and pick up clues. We did encounter some expected challenges turning a board game into an audio medium (we recorded this in person! All together! In a large room!), so please allow us some grace in departing from our normal superb audio quality. We did try to cover up the person reading their clue to the listener without the other three hearing by humming songs, and it mostly worked. Katy is statistically significant, Carrie tries and fails to be sincere, Maddy knows about Hamlet exclusively through The Lion King, and Mack needs to look out for Enrique Iglesias. We do not believe in the honor system among siblings, stress we don't cheat at Clue and are just very observant, think that Mom likes us all equally but for different reasons, and have a minor argument about who actually won. We also dig into our musical history by humming Vivaldi, Muppet songs, Chappell Roan, Star Wars, Beethoven, CCR, The Phantom of the Opera, and more. We do recommend listening with headphones as the audio quality is not our usual standard, but our goal was more to celebrate together and enjoy each other's company (ew).
