Welcome back to Hallowed Histories, presenting the first of our annual Winter Tales series. This year's lineup is exciting, featuring returning favorites like Sally Harris and Shane Brown, as well as new voices, all linked by the haunting landscape of East Anglia—a muse for the likes of Susan Hill, Arthur Conan Doyle, and Montague Rhodes James. For those craving more, the British Library's latest addition to their Tales of the Weird series, 'Eerie East Anglia,' comes highly recommended. Edited by Edward Parnell, a friend of the show, this anthology gathers classic terror tales from the region. If you're seeking the ideal place to purchase it, Holloway, a newly opened store off St Benedicts Street in Norwich, offers a quaint and esoteric selection of local folklore. We're also thrilled to announce the return of our live events this winter. On Sunday, 8th December, Stranger's Hall will host a talk with Sally Harris and Shane Brown, delving into their works, lives, and fascination with the extraordinary. Tickets can be secured via the Norfolk Museums website. Kicking off our tales is local writer and actress Alexandra Evans, whose story aptly heralds the advent season. Enjoy this appetizer, and join us each week throughout Christmas for more.

Macbeth is one of William Shakespeare's most popular plays, so why would anyone write a new version? Zinnie Harris is the writer of Macbeth (An Undoing), which is coming to the Malthouse Theatre. It fleshes out the story of one of the theatre's most notorious villains: Lady Macbeth. Also, The Woman in Black is a chilling ghost story that takes us to a lonely house beyond the marshes, where, as night falls, tormented spirits rise to their eternal purpose: to take revenge on the living. It's the second-longest-running play on London's West End and is now touring Australia with John Waters and Daniel MacPherson in the cast.

“Don't go chasing shadows, Arthur.”Adapting a Classic Ghost Story for the Big ScreenThe Woman in Black, based on Susan Hill's 1983 novel of the same name, has been adapted for the stage, television, and radio. In 2012, James Watkins directed a feature film version starring Daniel Radcliffe in his first major role since the Harry Potter series. With a talented team behind the camera and a compelling lead actor, The Woman in Black aimed to bring a classic ghost story to life for a new generation. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue the 2013 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards Best Actor Nominees series with a conversation about The Woman in Black.Radcliffe's Post-Potter Performance and the Film's Ghostly AtmosphereIn our discussion, we explore Daniel Radcliffe's performance as Arthur Kipps, a young lawyer grappling with grief and tasked with settling the estate of the mysterious Alice Drablow. Radcliffe's portrayal marks a significant departure from his iconic role as Harry Potter, showcasing his range as an actor. We also delve into the film's effective use of atmosphere, from the eerie Eel Marsh House and causeway leading to it to the unsettling appearances of the titular specter. However, we note that the reliance on jump scares and horror tropes may detract from the overall impact of the story.Other Topics CoveredThe differences between the novel, previous adaptations, and the 2012 filmThe film's exploration of grief and lossThe effectiveness of the period setting and production designThe use of children in peril as a horror elementThe Woman in Black offers a haunting tale of a vengeful spirit and the devastating impact of loss. While the film may lean heavily on familiar ghost story conventions, it succeeds in creating a chilling atmosphere and showcasing Daniel Radcliffe's post-Potter acting chops. Despite some reservations about the ending and the reliance on jump scares, The Woman in Black remains a solid entry in the gothic horror genre and a testament to the enduring power of Susan Hill's original novel. Tonight we are discussing the  1989 British horror drama television film directed by Herbert Wise (most famous for I, Cladius, who worked solidly from 1957 to 2001 on everything from The Bill to 9 episodes of Tales of the Unexpected - including ‘The Landlady' which may well be the episode that Jon talked about remembering in episode 29) It  stars Adrian Rawlins (Harry Potters Dead Dad in the movies and Mr Pike in one episode of Neighbours),  Bernard Hepton (I, Claudius, Get Carter Tinker Tailor, Soldier Spy and Colditz), David Daker (93 episodes of Boon, 84 episodes of Z cars, Time Bandits and 2 Doctor Who stories: Irongron in The Time Warrior and Captain Rigg in Nightmare of Eden)  and Pauline Moran ( who was Miss Lemon in many episodes of Poirot and was bass player in the all female band ‘The She Trinity' who had a top 40 hit a cover of "He fought the law" in 1966.).  Hill's The Woman in Black had already been adapted into a beloved stage-play that went to become the West End's second longest running, non-musical after The Moustrap. More recently, the story was filmed by Hammer in 2012, staring Daniel Radcliff and going on to be the highest grossing British horror movie of all time. This teleplay is adapted from the 1983 novel of the same name by Susan Hill. It focuses on a young solicitor who is sent to a coastal English village to settle the estate of a reclusive widow, and finds the town haunted. The programme was produced by Central Independent Television for ITV, it was filmed at Stanlake Park in Berkshire, using the causeway to Osea Island, near Goldhanger in Essex, and the local salt marshes, whilst scenes to represent Crythin Gifford were filmed at the National Trust village of Lacock, near Chippenham, Wiltshire. and premiered on Christmas Eve 1989. It was an unexpected success, though author Susan Hill reportedly disagreed with some of the slight changes made in the adaptation By General Witchfinder's favourite Nigel Kneale, who you will all most like be aware of as the writer of the eerie and downright terrifying with his Quatermass tetralogy and, the classic ‘The Stone tape', The Road and Beasts, a six horror stories based around animals, for ITV. Today's guest is one of our younger competitors at the Huntsman World Senior Games. Susan Hill was introduced to our annual event as a volunteer keeping bowling scores when she was 48 years old. She knew then that she would compete as soon as she was eligible; it would just be a matter of deciding which events to compete in. From the first year earning several bowling gold medals to winning a gold and silver medal in her inaugural year for golf, Susan loves both competing against athletes from all over the world and being inspired by athletes of all ages over 50. She has been athletic since she was a child and has taught by example her 3 children to stay active as well.

There was a 13-1 upset in the Risen Star Stakes on the road to the Kentucky Derby. Jennifer Morrison files from the Quarter Horse Awards Banquet, which had a sad subtext. Trainer Willy Armata assesses the chances of Ironstone for a Sovereign Award in the 3-year-old colt category and Woodbine's Mark McKelvie reveals how the Free For Alls at Mohawk will mean bigger purses for harness people. We were fascinated by a Finnish study that determined that men with high IQs are more likely to bet the horses, so intellectual giants like Jim Bannon, Tommy Massis, Garnet Barnsdale and Jim McKenny submitted their opinions. And a guy had just one job at Rosecroft Raceway – how could he not know there was a race going on?

Welcome to the special Christmas episode of The Edition! Up first: What a year in politics it has been. 2022 has seen five education secretaries, four chancellors, three prime ministers and two monarchs. But there is only one political team that can make sense of it all. The Spectator's editor Fraser Nelson, deputy political editor Katy Balls and assistant editor Isabel Hardman discuss what has surely been one of the most dramatic years in British political history (01:13). Then: Christmas is a time to spare a thought for our neighbours. While in the UK we have our own hardships, families in Ukraine are facing a Christmas under siege. The Spectator's Svitlana Morenets joins the podcast alongside author Andrey Kurkov, dialling in from Lazarivka near Kiev to discuss traditions in Ukraine (16:29). Next: We have a special Christmas treat for our listeners. For our festive triple issue of the magazine, historian Tom Holland interviews the author Robert Harris about everything from eco-radicals and interpreting history, to why the monarchy is so essential. They have kindly allowed us to hear some their conversation (25:58). Also this week: In his piece for The Spectator's Christmas issue, travel writer Sean Thomas reflects on a recent cruise around the Antarctic peninsula, a trip which gave him a new answer to the question which perpetually plagues him: what is the best place you have ever been? He is joined by explorer Felicity Aston who in 2012 became the first person to ski solo across Antarctica (40:59). And finally: Pantomime dames are as synonymous with Christmas as mince pies and a Spectator Christmas issue, but what makes a truly great dame? This is the question that Robert Gore-Langton asks in our festive magazine. He is joined by pantomime legend Christopher Biggins and Martin Vander Weyer, The Spectator's business editor and amateur pantomime dame (51:52).  Throughout the podcast you will also hear from some of our favourite answers to our Christmas poll: what gives you hope? Including Robert Tombs (15:19), Mary Beard (24:58), Susan Hill (39:15) and Peter Hitchens (50:58).  Hosted by William Moore.  Produced by Oscar Edmondson.
