This week on Unreserved, we invite you to sit and learn with us in the Elders Circle. Six elders from Mi'kmaq, Wolastoqey and Passamaquoddy communities in New Brunswick share their stories – about their life, the work they do and the change they're bringing for their people. Cecelia Brooks is from St. Mary's First Nation and is Wolastoqey, Mi'kmaq, Mohawk and Korean. She specializes in native plants and foods and leads medicine walks with her son, Anthony, in Fredericton's Odell Park. Imelda Perley is a Wolastoqey language speaker and has conducted traditional naming ceremonies for decades, bestowing Wolastoqey names to more than 200 children. George Paul, from Metepenagiag, created the Mi'kmaw Honour Song. It's become an anthem for his people and is popular at powwows for grand entries. Donald Soctomah is the tribal historic preservation officer for the Passamaquoddy tribe. He works with both the U.S. and Canadian governments to protect culturally significant sites, artifacts and knowledge. Noel Milliea has devoted his life to helping people heal from alcoholism, trauma and systemic racism. Part of this work included helping get an addiction treatment centre in Elsipogtog First Nation. Donna Augustine's life work is to bring the remains of Wabanaki ancestors home to rest. The elder from Elsipogtog First Nation says she has protected the burial sites of thousands of ancestors and reburied hundreds from many different tribes. Special thanks to CBC New Brunswick for these stories.

Canada’s surveillance of Indigenous movements, a Policy Options podcast. From the fight against the Northern Gateway pipeline to the anti-fracking protests involving Elsipogtog First Nation and the Idle No More movement, Canadian surveillance organizations have kept close watch of Indigenous resistance movements over the past decade. Andrew Crosby and Jeffrey Monaghan, authors of Policing Indigenous Movements: Dissent and the Security State, joined the podcast to discuss why the government monitors Indigenous social and environmental movements. They say this surveillance characterizes land and water protectors and other activists as security threats, delegitimizing the actions of Indigenous rights holders. Andrew Crosby is a coordinator with the Ontario Public Interest Research Group (OPIRG) at Carleton University. Jeffrey Monaghan is an assistant professor at Carleton’s Institute of Criminology and Criminal Justice. New episodes every second Wednesday. Download for Free. In both this episode of Talking Radical Radio -- episode #50, from February 5, 2013 -- and the following one, I will be speaking with Miles Howe. Howe is an editor and a journalist with the Halifax local of The Media Co-op, a co-operatively organized grassroots media network with locals and working groups in cities across the country. Over the last year, Howe has provided truly excellent coverage of the struggle against hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, and against colonization in New Brunswick, which has been lead by people from the Elsipogtog First Nation and quite broadly supported in the area. In this episode, Howe talks about some of the historical background, about the lead-up and events that initiated the current phase of struggle in New Brunswick, and about some of the key moments of conflict and crisis that he observed and participated in, as community members and allies attempted to prevent a surveying company from engaging in seismic testing as a prelude to fracking. Episode #51 of Talking Radical Radio (February 12, 2014) is the second of two based on an interview with Miles Howe. This week's episode features the portion of our conversation in which Howe stepped back a bit from that immediate struggle, which has occupied so much of his atteniton in the last year, and used that experience as a basis for reflecting on what it means to engage in grassroots journalism, how it differs from mainstream journalism, and what he hopes that such work can accomplish.
