We start this episode with the unveiling of the statue of Edward Carson at Stormont Castle in Northern Ireland. It rather makes the point that a man who helped organise an armed force against British law, and even to call on British soldiers to mutiny rather than fire on rebels – no doubt because to him and his friend they were the right kind of rebels – could get away with such behaviour if he had the backing of the right circles of power back in England. Not just get away with it, in fact, but be honoured with a statue. From there, we move to India where a man like Gandhi kept finding himself being gaoled by the British authorities for actions far less noxious than Carson's. A brown-skinned Hindu simply couldn't be allowed to call on action against the rule of the British government, even if that action was far less subversive of the law than what the white-skinned Protestant Carson had championed. As it happens, the National government in Britain was beginning to consider the possibility of granting a little more autonomy to India, though nothing like as much as enjoyed by white-ruled holdings, such as Australia or Canada, which enjoyed Dominion Status, giving them almost independence. That was far too little for Gandhi, or for Clement Attlee and his Labour Party. On the other hand, it was far too much for Winston Churchill. He fought the government all the way to the point, by the end, of becoming something of a figure of fun in the House of Commons. No one proved that better than his chief tormentor, Leo Amery, despite being a fellow Conservative and a contemporary of his at Harrow school. He used mockery against him in a way that Churchill himself might have been proud of had he used it himself. But the real danger for Churchill was that he was perilously close to becoming a bore. The staff of an East Clare school says it's an honour to be chosen as one of the first schools in the country to offer a new Senior Cycle subject. St. Anne's Community College in Killaloe is one of 57 post-primary schools that have been selected to have Drama, Film and Theatre Studies as an optional subject for the Leaving Certificate from next year. According to the Department of Education, the subject will "promote and encourage creativity as a basis for learning through immersive experiences" and will give students "the opportunity to cultivate informed thinking through learning supported by creative and critical processes". Assistant Principal and English and Drama teacher at St. Anne's Community College Maree Murphy says given the long-standing embrace of the arts at the school, it's well placed to teach the new area.

Honoured to have a very special guest as our latest Voice - Team GB Retired Paralympic Gold Medalist in rowing (Beijing Paralympics) 2008- Helene Raynsford. Helene has a truly rare perspective on navigating not only multiple very complex health conditions and living life as a wheelchair user at a young age, facing breast cancer, an ileostomy with a stoma...but how she used her mental training to win Gold in the Paralympic Games as a 'blueprint' to approach each new health challenge. Helene does an incredible amount of advocacy work that isn't always publicly visible; supporting multiple charities, being Chair of the Athletes Commission for the Paralympics GB, a Non-Executive Director for Sports England. Her career in public health reinforces her outreach work at trying to address major health inequalities that still exist - for example the fact that mobile MRI breast screening units are on the whole not wheelchair accessible. Such a humble, modest person who sets the gold standard of what genuine advocacy work is about, using her health conditions to truly help and support others for greater and lasting change. We are honoured to share her health journey as one of our Voices in the Scars of Gold campaign, and for Helene to be Patron to our charity and support our mission here at Mortal And Strong. This interview provides unique and new perspectives on how to prepare mentally for new health challenges and how to keep focused on the end goal (or finishing line). A gold medalist sharing her Scars of Gold, but more importantly a humble human being who has reflected a lot on what it is to be mortal and how to make the most of life and not be defeated by any health challenges.Mortal and Strong is a registered charity and presenting our debut campaign Scars of Gold. A campaign using art to shine the spotlight on women facing their own mortality - those affected at a young age by a life changing illness or disease. 100 artworks produced by artists across the country along with a powerful photography series ‘Scars of Gold' inspired by kintsugi. 100 Voices sharing messages of hope and strength through our podcast. Honoured to have another incredible Voice sharing her story with us and this is a unique story raising the awareness of the dangers of environmental triggers causing life threatening disease. Sarah has an interstitial lung disease called Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis as a result of over a decade exposure to a small amount of mould in her house. After living for just over a decade in a housing association flat whereby there was a very small (less than a 30cm ruler) amount of mould in her wardrobe Sarah began getting short of breathe. When this continued to progress and not responding to 'asthma treatment' eventually she was diagnosed with the incurable lung disease. Sarah needed 7 months of chemotherapy and has been on steroids for over 6 years to stabilise the disease. Sarah will likely need a lung transplant and requires oxygen every day to move around, all from a preventable disease which could have been avoided through no fault of her own. This story truly is an important reminder of the dangers of environmental hazards and Sarah does a lot of awareness work to educate people on the importance of taking damp and mould seriously, and to change legislation to help tenants affordable housing have safer living conditions. Despite this, Sarah shares a wonderful positive outlook on life and how she finds joy in the simple things. Thank you to Sarah for bringing to light such an important topic in our campaign.Mortal and Strong provides a campaign using art to shine the spotlight on women facing their own mortality - those affected at a young age by a life changing illness or disease. 100 artworks produced by artists across the country along with a powerful photography series ‘Scars of Gold' inspired by kintsugi. 100 Voices sharing messages of hope and strength through our podcast. Honoured to be joined by a true music legend on podcast this week. Mark Mothersbaugh, Devo frontman, artist and film composer. Mark discusses his beautifully designed mail-art book. ‘Apotropaic Beatnik Graffiti', which features Mark's wonderful drawings on small postcards. Mail art, also known as postal art and correspondence art, is an artistic movement centred on sending small-scale works through the postal service. This lifelong passion of Mark's started back in 1969 and he now has over 700 red books of mail-art in his archives, including postcards from legendary artist, Andy Warhol. This book represents just 5 of those books from the collection. We also talk about 50 years of Devo and the story behind the look and visual aesthetic of the band. It's safe to say that band's visual style is as iconic as their music. There is no one else quite like them! They are arguably one of the most influential bands of all-time and new documentary about the group premiered at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. The film, which has had the odd screening in the UK, was directed by Chris Smith, who also made ‘Jim and Andy', a wonderful film about Andy Kaufman and the making of Man On The Moon.
