Todd Veinotte and Clinton Wilkins discuss the Halifax real estate market with special guest Keith Kenny, a realtor from Century 21 Optimum. They highlight Dartmouth downtown and Fairview as good investment opportunities, noting the city's urban development and infrastructure challenges. They discuss the impact of urban sprawl on municipal services and the importance of transit and road infrastructure. Keith mentions the demand for one-level living among older buyers and the lack of affordable options in HRM. They also touch on the influence of national reports on local markets and the role of military relocations in the real estate sector.
Keith Kenny, a realtor from Century 21 Optimum with 13 years of experience, discussed the Halifax real estate market. He noted a slight increase in inventory, cautious optimism among buyers, and the impact of political and economic uncertainties. Buyers are now more cautious, with many offers being rejected. The average home price in HRM is around $633,000, with anything below $600,000 being highly competitive. Kenny emphasized the importance of accurate listing prices to avoid wasting time and setting unrealistic expectations. He also highlighted the need for transparency in transactions to avoid buyer's remorse.
Today Mary welcomes Dr. Tim Chaffey to discuss the controversial Hebrew Roots Movement. Far from simply trying to understand the Jewish roots of the Bible, this movement seeks to answer the question about what happens when Gentiles and Jews get saved: do Gentiles become Jews? For centuries, the people of God were Jews, with the exception of some Gentiles who came to faith in the God of Israel. The early church consisted mostly of Jewish believers in Jesus, but when the gospel went to the Gentiles, there was a new dynamic that, unfortunately, even led some to believe that Christians were the new Israel and now received all the promises of God solely. This teaching continues today across the church spectrum. Why is there so much confusion about who is who, when the epistles clearly address these things head on? But with the HRM, there is even more confusion regarding the Mosaic Law, the feasts of Israel, who is a Jew, and what is Israel. Here to help us sort it all out is Dr. Chaffey, whose comprehensive article on the subject can be found here. Now that budget season is done, as threatened, this show will now become a weekly roundup of what happened at City Hall last week. The obvious high/lowlight of last week was when council finished the budget adjustment list debates on Wednesday, March 26, but did you know that other meetings also happened last week? There was an audit that missed some key financial information, public housing grants were awarded, and next summer, there might be a bus to HRM's beaches! This weekly recap show takes a whirlwind rip through all of council's meetings (except budget committee) from the past week.
Today, the East Coast Prison Justice Society released a series of calls to action, including ending police deployment to wellness checks and to launch a civilian crisis response team. This comes after two deaths in HRM where police attended wellness checks and a conducted energy weapon (aka taser) was deployed to subdue the individual. Sheila Wildeman is the chair of the East Coast Prison Justice Society and a professor of law at Dalhousie University. El Jones is one of the authors of the 2022 report, Defunding the Police: Defining the Way Forward for HRM and a professor at MSVU. Jamie Livingston is a criminology prof at SMU. They all spoke with Alex Guye about the calls to action, in particular the civilian crisis team, just before we went to air.
A rally on Tuesday was held in support of 12 janitors who are going to their jobs at Alderney Gate on March 1st. This happened after the HRM council selected a new, non-union contractor, Imperial Cleaners. Service Employees International Union Local 2 that represents 20,000 workers around Canada were calling on HRM mayor, council and CAO to require Imperial to hire these janitors. Tina Oh, an organizer and coordinator with the union, spoke with our colleague Meig Campbell. A statement from the city to CBC says: On Feb. 28, 2025, the Halifax Regional Municipality received notice that a judicial review has been filed by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 2 on the matter of janitorial services for Alderney Gate. As this matter is now before the courts, no additional information or comment is available at this time.

Modern human resources department represents the interests of the overall mission of the business aligned with the needs of individual employees. Depending on the size and scope of a company, an HRM department can perform a variety of roles and responsibilities. In recent years, the role of HRM has expanded as companies recognize that it's cost-effective to invest in employee development and retention. Better-trained and happier employees are more productive, and innovative. But has the HRM department overstepped its' mandate? Hello, and welcome to Episode 243 of The People Powered Business Podcast! In today's episode, we're exploring a topic that is no longer just a ‘nice-to-have' for organisations but an absolute necessity—workplace flexibility. We've touched on some of the legalities and frameworks before, but today, we're going to dive deeper into why flexibility is a critical component of retaining top talent. What We'll CoverLast week, we revisited the foundations of workplace relations laws, including the National Employment Standards (NES), and one of the cornerstones of these laws is the right to request workplace flexibility. Interestingly, in our Facebook Group, a recent discussion around a redundancy situation brought up some really important questions around flexible working. So, today we'll address key aspects of workplace flexibility, including:Understanding the legal side of flexibility – what the NES says about requests for flexible work. Why flexibility is so important to employees – it's more than just a perk, it's an expectation. The business case for flexibility – why offering it is essential for attracting and retaining talent, improving morale, and boosting productivity. What Does Flexibility Mean Under the NES?Under the National Employment Standards, certain employees, like parents or caregivers, have the legal right to request flexible working arrangements. This can involve changes to working hours, work patterns, or even the location of work (e.g., working from home).Eligible employees need to have been with the employer for at least 12 months, and these requests must be related to specific circumstances such as being a parent of school-aged children or younger, being a carer, living with a disability, being 55 or older, being pregnant, or supporting someone experiencing family or domestic violence. There are clear guidelines around how these requests should be made and how employers are required to respond. Why Flexibility is Vital to EmployeesFlexible working arrangements are no longer seen as a luxury; for many employees, they're a dealbreaker. According to a recent HRM article, 78% of employees won't consider working for a company that doesn't have a formalised flexibility policy. In fact, almost half of the candidates surveyed said they've declined job offers due to a lack of flexibility. This shift in employee expectations highlights how crucial it is for businesses to adapt. Flexibility isn't just about working from home; it can encompass working hours, patterns, and arrangements that cater to individual needs. The Business Case for FlexibilityIf you're looking to attract and retain top talent, offering flexibility is a must. It's not just about ticking a box – it has real, tangible benefits for businesses:Improved employee engagement: 61% of employees report feeling more engaged at work when they have flexible arrangements in place.Increased productivity: When employees can work in ways that suit their personal lives, productivity often gets a boost.Better morale: Flexible work has been shown to reduce stress, burnout, and absenteeism, which creates a more positive work environment.Cost savings: From lower office costs to fewer lost workdays, businesses that offer flexibility often see financial benefits. There's also the principle of reciprocity, as highlighted by Robert Cialdini in his work on persuasion. When businesses offer flexibility, employees tend to respond with increased loyalty and effort, creating a win-win for both parties.Beyond Location: Thinking Creatively About FlexibilityWhen we think about flexibility, it's easy to focus only on working from home. But flexibility can take many forms. It could mean adjusting hours or work...
A group of volunteers in the HRM is trying to make it easier for seniors to live independently in their own homes, for longer. It's called Happy at Home Halifax. When Lindell Smith was elected in 2016, he won handily. He was the only Black Nova Scotian on the HRM council, the first elected in 16 years. Plus, he was only 26-years-old. Councillor Smith talks about the challenges of being a political newbie, what he's proud of accomplishing and what's next now that he's decided to not run.
For some universities in the province, the annual homecoming weekend has brought more than its fair share of revelry. Rowdy street parties have become an annual headache for neighbours living around universities. Last year, Dalhousie launched a ‘joint task force' with HRM to address the unsanctioned street gatherings once and for all. We check in on the plan of attack for this weekend.

They like ballot boxes with the intention of encouraging people to dispose of their cigarette butts properly, rather than throwing them on the ground. Guest host Preston Mulligan is joined by Ally Chant, the waste resource education officer for HRM, to talk about this effort to reduce litter.

Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is gaining more traction in our lives. It's been here awhile, but the launch of Chat GPT has really accelerated our awareness of how it can simplify our lives. AI will be a part of our athletic lives as well, certainly for the way we plan our plan, analyse, and adjust our training to get the best results. Will this benefit athletes and coaches alike? I don't have enough knowledge on the subject to answer that but today's podcast guest does! Prof Paul Laursen will be familiar to regular listeners of this show. He's spoken on this show before about High Intensity Interval Training and we spoke about AI back in 2021. Since then there have been a lot of advances in AI and with his own platform Athletica.ai. If you are a self coached athlete, AI has the power to save you a lot of time with planning and improve your training prescription. Coaches can benefit too, as they'll be able to analyse much more data and improve their decision making for a larger number of athletes. Whether you're an athlete or a coach, AI will have some impact on your work, training, or data analysis. In this conversation we chat about: Some of the latest gadgets that Prof is testing out How Athletica works for athletes and coaches Threats and opportunities for athletes and coaches Garbage In Garbage Out (GIGO) is so relevant, and why athletes need some personal responsiblity Coaches will never be redundant To find out more about The Prof please visit these channels: Athletica: https://athletica.ai/ HIIT Science: https://hiitscience.com/ Twitter - @PaulBLaursen Click the link to get hold of a copy of Paul's book, Science and Application of High Intensity Interval Training New links we spoke about on this podcast were: Respiratory training System - https://isocapnic.com/ forget Powerbreathe. It merged with another fire and is just 3% contained, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service.Gray skies loomed over huge scars of blackened earth in a rural area dotted with scrub brush, ranchland, rocky canyons and oil rigs. Since July 2021 there have been 75 leaks and spills from orphan wells and 92% of the orphan well sites checked by county oil and gas inspectors were out of compliance. The lawsuit is seeking monetary damages. HRM currently has no active wells, according to the Colorado Energy and Carbon Management database, and in the last four years produced the equivalent of 550 barrels of oil.The company has been financed by Los Angeles-based Kayne Anderson Capital Advisors, which according to its website manages $34 billion in investments, many in niche areas including oil and gas fields. The house was within 200 feet (60 meters) of the well, and the pipeline was buried about 7 feet (2.1 meters) underground.Missouri Meatpacking Plant Lagoon Wretched Stenchhttps://missouriindependent.com/2024/02/29/missouri-house-bill-takes-aim-at-cesspool-of-meatpacking-sludge/Between Vallerie Steele, her seven siblings and their children, there's always a birthday or anniversary to celebrate on the family's southwest Missouri farm. The summer months are typically a parade of pool parties and barbecues.Until last year. The stench coming from the lagoon across the road from Steele's home has become unbearable. It holds waste Denali Water Solutions collects from meatpacking plants before spreading it as free fertilizer on farmers' properties. The smell from the “cesspool of rotting flesh” has forced the family inside, she said. “Nobody wants to eat a burger or a hot dog if it smells like rotten crap in the air,” Steele said in an interview with The Independent. “It's just disgusting.”She tried to stain her porch three times last summer but couldn't stand to be outside because of the smell. One of her sons was bullied at school because the stench of the lagoon clung to his clothes. Children at her younger son's combined elementary and middle school beg their teachers to stay inside during recess.“It literally burns your lungs, your chest,” she said. “I'm an ICU nurse — like, I know this isn't normal.”Steele leads a coalition of southwest Missouri residents fighting for more regulation of Denali's — and similar — lagoons. She implored state lawmakers last month to pass legislation meant to protect rural neighbors and impose more regulations on wastewater sludge haulers. And on Thursday, the Missouri House voted 151-2 to pass legislation that would require companies like Denali to have water pollution permits and follow certain design requirements for its facilities. Facilities like Denali's would have to be at least 1,000, 2,000 or 4,000 feet from the nearest public building or home depending on the size of the lagoon. And the state would have to establish sampling rules for the basins and require groundwater monitoring in hydrologically sensitive areas.Sponsored by state Reps. Ed Lewis, a Moberly Republican, and Dirk Deaton, a Noel Republican, the legislation now moves to the Missouri Senate for consideration. The House attached an emergency clause, meaning if it clears the Senate and is signed by the governor the new regulations would go into effect immediately. Kansas Lawmakers School Yard Bully Routine with LGBTQ+ personshttps://kansasreflector.com/2024/02/29/legislative-bullies-target-kansas-lgbtq-kids-for-harassment-with-anti-trans-bills/When Kansas GOP leaders consider three bills Thursday targeting transgender kids in the state, they might as well file into a local high school and line the hallways. From their posts, leaning arrogantly against lockers, they could yell slurs and throw elbows at beleaguered LGBTQ+ kids trying to make their way through the day. They're bullying our fellow Kansans. If lawmakers actually behaved like that at high school, they would face discipline and possibly suspension. In the Kansas Legislature, however, they will revel in news media coverage and behave as though they're protecting someone from something nefarious. You know, the same way a high school bully “protects” a target in P.E. class by shoving them to the floor. These lawmakers will profess to be concerned about gender-affirming care for those younger than 18. Here's the truth: They don't give a rip about gender-affirming care guidelines. If they did, they would listen to the bevy of medical experts, families and trans folks who explain the lifesaving necessity of this treatment. As American Academy of Pediatrics CEO Mark Del Monte put it, his group wants to “ensure young people get the reproductive and gender-affirming care they need and are seen, heard and valued as they are.”Forget expert opinion. These lawmakers want to harass and exclude kids who look and behave differently. They're bullies, no matter their age.Not To Be Outdone In Texas They Are Making Listshttps://www.erininthemorning.com/p/retaliation-texas-ag-paxton-demands?publication_id=994764&utm_campaign=email-post-title&r=1n4up&utm_medium=emailIn a legal filing Thursday, PFLAG (National sought to block a new demand from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton that would require the organization to identify its Texas transgender members, doctors who work with them, and contingency plans for anti-transgender legislation in the state. The civil investigative demand, issued on Feb. 5, calls for extensive identifying information and records from the LGBTQ+ rights organization. PFLAG, in its filing to block the demands, describes them as "retaliation" for its opposition to anti-transgender laws in the state and alleges that they violate the freedom of speech and association protections afforded by the United States and Texas constitutions.Founded in 1973, PFLAG is the first and largest organization dedicated to supporting, educating, and advocating for LGBTQ+ people and their families. The demands are extensive. The letter to PFLAG National demands "unredacted" information around claims made by Brian Bond, PFLAG's Chief Executive Officer, in a legal fight against the ban on gender-affirming care in the state. Bond's claims highlighted that PFLAG represents 1,500 members in Texas, many of whom are seeking contingency plans if SB14, the ban on gender-affirming care, takes effect.Per the lawsuit, PFLAG National states that it would be required to disclose Texas trans youth members, including "complete names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, jobs, home addresses, telephone numbers, [and] email addresses." It also states they would need to hand over documents and communications related to their medical care, hospitals outside the state, and "contingency plans" discussed among members for navigating the new laws on gender-affirming care in Texas.Learn more and support PFLAG at PFLAG.ORG @TheHeartlandPOD on Twitter and ThreadsCo-HostsAdam Sommer @Adam_Sommer85 (Twitter) @adam_sommer85 (Post)Rachel Parker @msraitchetp (Post) Sean Diller (no social)The Heartland Collective - Sign Up Today!JOIN PATREON FOR MORE - AND JOIN OUR SOCIAL NETWORK!“Change The Conversation”Outro Song: “The World Is On Fire” by American Aquarium http://www.americanaquarium.com/
