On this episode of The Truth In This Art, I'm excited to share my conversation with Lex Marie, a DC-based multidisciplinary artist whose powerful work I've been eager to explore for years. Lex creates compelling paintings, sculptures, and installations that reflect personal experiences and deeply resonate with the African diaspora, often using everyday and reclaimed materials. We explore Lex's creative process, from her early creative explorations as a child (where she was known for coloring outside the lines with purpose!) to her pivotal decision to pursue painting in college and her impactful first solo exhibition in 2021. Lex shares her insights on the courage it takes to create art that addresses personal experiences and societal challenges, including the weighty realities of childhood for many African American children and children of color, systemic challenges, and her experience as a mother to a young Black boy in America. This conversation is more than just an interview; it's an insightful look into the motivations and inspirations behind her thought-provoking pieces and the importance of authenticity in artistic expression. This episode was recorded at Eaton DC, my creative home away from home, a hotel that's also a vibrant cultural center. If you're interested in contemporary art, the power of artistic expression, or stories that matter, this episode is a must-listen. Tune in and discover the compelling and authentic work of Lex Marie. Hi friends and welcome to episode 117. It's been a wild month for me as I've had my second solo exhibition, ‘An Ornamental Education' running here at the art gallery of Ballarat. It's been an incredible ride having my first exhibition at a public art gallery and I wanted to make sure that I shared it with you before it ends on 14thApril. I've created a full guided tour for you on my YouTube channel. I really hope you head on over there to check it out, because the audio for this episode makes a whole lot more sense when you can see the artwork. But nevertheless, I know that many of you prefer to listen rather than look while painting in the studio, so I wanted to make it available to you here on the podcast as well. I'll be sure to leave the link to the video in the show notes so you can check that out too. This episode also includes an absolutely brilliant address given by my dear friend and fellow artist, Dr Louisann King. at the opening celebration held at the gallery on 8th March, which also happened to be International Women's Day. It was so incredibly eloquent and brought so much depth and understanding about this body of work, that I really wanted to include it in full. I also just wanted to mention, that in May and June I'm teaching my first in-person 2 day painting workshops since before Covid. I'm running them with the beautiful crew at Artable in May and June. The workshop on the Gold Coast in June has sold out, which is wonderful. But there are still a few spots available at my Melbourne workshop on 4th and 5th of May. So if you'd like to learn how to paint in my signature bright, floral abstract style, be sure to click on the links below. Gemersik is visual artist Anisa Abdullah's solo art exhibition, which celebrates her love for art, fashion, and life. The word “gemersik” is said to be an elegant extraction of a beautiful classic Malay word which loosely translates to "rustle" and represents Anisa and her artworks through the symbolic sound of folding, cutting, and paper tearing in her artmaking. Known for her art collages, Anisa's artworks were created from thousands of paper cuttings, and the exhibition is also said to be a personal documentation of her ups and downs in life as well. Anisa joins us to share more about her latest solo.Image Credit: Galeri Chandan

Welcome to the latest Photopocene conversation with me, your host, Josie Purcell. This time, I'm joined by an upcoming visual artist from North Devon, George Rayner. Graduating in 2021, and receiving an award from Format Festival for his final degree show work, I love the fact that George came to photography on a "whim". We chat about his love for black and white photography, keeping cool in his (well ventilated) darkroom, what nature and the natural world mean to him, and, of course, his photo projects seeking to highlight environmental matters which need us to act now to divert long term ecological damage. With an element of humour in some of his work, we chat about how that can draw someone in, and we talk about his connection to his coastal surroundings along with his collaborations with a musician and a textile artist, and his latest show. Listen in or find out more at https://www.georgeraynerfilm.com/ You can follow George on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/george__rayner/ And see his exhibit with Studio Kind at https://www.studiokind.org.uk/george-rayner-virtual-tour and in the Ephemeris publication at https://tourdemoon.com/sites/default/files/2022-03/TDM%20Issue%206_17_03_22_0_0.pdf And more links here: Solo Exhibition: https://www.studiokind.org.uk/george-rayner-transient-tales August Group Show: https://www.studiokind.org.uk/unstable-ground Music video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YsR68KXNY_E&t=1s Article on music video and new EP: https://www.folkradio.co.uk/2022/07/video-stevieray-latham-fugitive/?fbclid=IwAR2vcQ6wi-gZkUsmXsuPR4qR5WyQ-zRax60njYTh70jjKm_LK1UbxDe0BUo If you would like to share your eco-conscious photography story on Photopocene, simply contact me via https://www.josiepurcellphotography.com/contact or DM via Insta https://www.instagram.com/josieshutterpod/

In this episode of The Artist Business Plan we sit down with artist Preston Smith who leads an amazing masterclass on showing up and following through on your goals. He shares important practices on how to become your best friend instead of your worst enemy. Together, we'll learn how to create your own once in a lifetime opportunity and turn it into the start of the rest of your life. Guest: Preston M. Smith's artwork over the years has transitioned from moody pop surrealist paintings into vibrantly colorful, tactile, highly textured and almost "edible" abstract works. Preston's work has been showcased alongside David Lynch and at the Inaugural Purple Ball for President Obama's Inauguration in 2009, where he was commissioned to paint 12 portraits of the President. Recently, Preston is coming off of a successful Solo Exhibition at ShockBoxx Gallery in Hermosa Beach California and his first two showings at the LA Art Show in Downtown L.A.. His work has also been selected by a panel of curators as a winner in the 1st 2018 ArtSlant Artprize Showcase and has been on display at the world famous La Luz De Jesus Gallery, and in numerous exhibitions throughout Los Angeles and across the country. https://www.pmsartwork.com (https://www.pmsartwork.com) For more information on applying to Superfine Art Fair as well as recordings of this and all of our past podcasts, just visit http://www.superfine.world/ (www.superfine.world ) IG: https://www.instagram.com/superfineartfair/?hl=en (@superfineartfair) IG: https://www.instagram.com/pmsartwork/ (@pmsartwork) If you want to submit a listener question you can email it to kelsey@superfine.world for a chance of it being answered by Alex, James, and our guest! I had the pleasure of sitting down and interviewing the amazing painter Clintel Steed in person at his studio in New York City. Clintel Steed takes inspiration for his work from his surroundings, whether it's Utah or Harlem. His work is an exploration of moments, feelings, situations and experiences that he brings to life through art. His paintings often carry themes of the struggle of feeling divided, politics and current events. Clintel Steed was born in 1977 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He received his BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and his MFA from Indiana University, and completed Advanced Studies at the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture. His work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions, most recently Clintel Steed: Endymion at Steven Harvey Fine Art Projects, New York; Emoji Show at Klaus von Nichtsagend, New York, and So Much, So Little, All At Once at Regina Rex, New York, and Mark Borghi in Sag Harbor, Solo Exhibition, "Behind the Hood" among others. He is the recipient of the John Koch Award from the National Academy of Arts and Letters, and recent press includes Hyperallergic, Artcritical, and The New York Sun. Melati Suryodarmo, (b. 1969, Solo, Indonesia) graduated from the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunscheweig, Germany under the tutelage of Marina Abramović and Anzu Furukawa with a Meisterschüler qualification in Performance Art. Her practice is informed by Butoh, dance and history, among others. Her work is the result of ongoing research in the movements of the body and its relationship to the self and the world. These are enshrined in photography, translated into choreographed dances, enacted in video or executed in live performances. Suryodarmo is interested in the psychological and physical agitations that may be from the self or the world but somehow result in lasting change the individual. This belief in change or growth through bodily action belies her early induction in meditation, which she continues to practice. The body is the home for memories and the self, rather than the individual itself, and the body's system. The way the body translates internal and external ideas enriches the attitude and thoughts of the self. Meeting Furukawa, an accomplished Butoh practitioner, had opened her eyes on the expressive qualities of the body, a form of communication that transcends verbal language. This experience has motivated her lifelong studies into Butoh and other artistic forms concerned with the human body. As a trained performance artist, presence is integral to the accomplishment of Suryodarmo's work in all mediums. The senses picks up non-verbal inputs and receive them as communication of intent, emotion, energy or identity. These non-verbal inputs open the door to sensitive and individual perception and the creation of presence. However, everyone processes these inputs differently and interpret them differently based on their unique consciousness. By compiling, extracting, conceptualising and translating some of these factors of presence that she recognises into her work, she intends to tease open the fluid border between the body and its environment. These movements are understood through the metaphor of poets, who similarly assembles words and spaces to create their poetry. Suryodarmo draws inspiration from her real experiences in the world. The path of history informs her perception of the everyday and the now. Her works often reflect the process that lead to current events, be it political, global or highly personal. In her abstracted gestures and poetical acts, the presence of each work is brought to a concentrated level of intensity. In abstracting these acts from their common context, they are made to correspond with new associations and sometimes identify radically with different meanings. The works' abstract narrative throws the spotlight on the audience's bodily response. This often results in a level of factual absurdity in the work, which is acknowledged and welcome. Suryodarmo has presented her work in various international festivals and exhibitions, including Reanacting History: Collective Actions and Everyday Gestures (2017), National Museum of Contemporary Art Korea, Gwacheon, South Korea; SUNSHOWER: Contemporary Art from Southeast Asia 1980s to Now (2017), National Art Centre Tokyo & Mori Art Museum, travelled to Fukuoka Art Museum, Japan; AFTERWORK (2016), Para Site, Hong Kong, travelled to (2017) Ilham Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; East Asia Feminism: FANTasia (2015), Seoul Museum of Art, Seoul, South Korea; 8th Asia Pacific Triennale (2015), Queensland Art Gallery & Gallery of Modern Art, Queensland, Australia; 5th Guangzhou Triennale (2015), Guangzhou, China; The Roving Eye: Contemporary Art from Southeast Asia (2014), Arter, Istanbul, Turkey; Medium at Large (2014), Singapore Art Museum, Singapore; Luminato Festival (2012), Toronto, Canada; Beyond the Self: Contemporary Portraiture from Asia (2011), National Portrait Gallery, Canberra, Australia; Marina Abramović Presents… (2009), Manchester International Festival, Manchester, U.K.; Incheon Women Artists' Biennale (2009), Incheon, South Korea; Manifesta 7 (2008), Bolzano, Italy; Wind from the East: Perspectives on Asian Contemporary Art (2007), Kiasma, Helsinki, Finland. Since 2007, Suryodarmo has been organizing an annual Performance Art Laboratory and Undisclosed Territory, a performance art festival, in Solo, Indonesia. In 2012, she founded “Studio Plesungan”, an art space for performance artists to use as a laboratory. In 2017, she served as Artistic Director for Jiwa, the 17th Jakarta Biennale. She currently lives and works between Gross Gleidingen, Germany and Solo, Indonesia.Artist StatementThe world that inspires me to move my thoughts is the world inside me. The body becomeslike a home which functions as container of memories, living organism. The systeminside the psychological body that changes all the time has enriched my idea to developnew structures of attitude and thoughts. I try to perceive my surroundings as the fact ofthe real presence of now, but considering the path of its history. I try to understand thelanguage that are not spoken, and opens the door of perceptions. I respect the freedom inour minds to perceive things coming through our individual sensory register system.Crossing the boundaries of cultural and political encounters has been a challenge thatstimulates me discovering new identification. An effort to find identity is yet a dangerousact of losing the ground of origin. For me, the process of making artwork is a life long researchthat never stops me to put myself inside the metamorphic constellation. I intend totouch the fluid border between the body and its environment through my art works. I aimto create a concentrated level of intensity without the use of narrative structures. Talkingabout politics, society or psychology makes no sense to me if the nerves are not able todigest the information. I love it when a performance reaches a level of factual absurdity.Melati Suryodarmo's performances have been dealing with the relationship between ahuman body, a culture in which it belongs to and a constellation where it lives. Through thepresence, she compiles, extracts, conceptualized and translates some phenomenon orsubjects into movement, actions, and gestures that are specified to her performance. MelatiSuryodarmo´s performances concern with cultural, social and political aspects, inwhich she articulates through her psychological and physical body. Her performances featureelements of physical presence and visual art to talk about identity, energy, politics andrelationships between the body and its environments.Melati Suryodarmo studied at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig, Germanyunder Marina Abramovic.Suryodarmo has presented her works in various internationalfestivals and exhibitions since 1996, including the 50th Venice Biennale 2003, Marking theterritory, IMMA Dublin. e.t.c. In 2005, Melati Suryodarmo has performed at the Van GoghMuseum Amsterdam, during the Exhibition of the Life of Egon Schiele in 2005; VideobrasilSao Paolo (2005), Haus der Kulturen der Welt Berlin, 52nd Venice Biennale dance Festival(2007), KIASMA Helsinki (2007), Manifesta7, in Bolzano, Italy (2008),and In Transit festival,HKW Berlin (2009), Luminato festival of the arts, Toronto, (2012), Asia Pacific Triennale,Qagoma Brisbane (2015), Guangzhou Triennale, Guangdong, China (2015); SingaporeBiennale, Singapore, (2016). This week I’m catching up with my studio assistant Laura. For those of you who haven’t been with me for every episode the whole first season of this podcast is dedicated to me coaching Laura through the process of creating her first solo exhibition. Fast forward 18 months and Laura is about to hang her second solo show. So in what appears to be a bit of a theme this year in checking in on the progress of my two emerging art-superstar studio assistant, this conversation focuses in on some of the key things that Laura has learnt from her first exhibition experience and how that is informing her second show. In this episode we share: How Laura has been following the threads of techniques you enjoy to evolve a body of work. What it means to take brave steps to share the exploration phase of the development of artwork. Laura shares some tools that help her start creating each day and overcome any resistance she feels towards her studio practice. A reflection on Laura’s past art show and the experience she’s taking forward into this next exhibition. Further shownotes and links at 65. Sights and Sounds is your weekly guide the Bay Area arts scene through the eyes and ears of local artists. During the pandemic, we're offering suggestions for ways to experience art and culture from home and at social distance spaces. This week, host Jenee Darden speaks with painter Troy Chew . Hip Hop album Rich Slave by Young Dolph Troy Chew is a big fan of Southern hip hop and he says this album is fire. Rich Slave is the first album Memphis rapper Young Dolph has released in a while. The album debut at #4 on the Billboard charts. Some of the songs are about social justice issues such as police profiling and the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Respite, a Solo Exhibition by Chris Duncan Chris Duncan is an Oakland-based artist who uses both visual and sound-based media to address time and its effects. Troy Chew says in this exhibit Chris tries to remove his white male gaze from his artistry and uses the sun to help him create pieces. The visual works are abstract and the
This week we talk with Erika Hewston, a sculptural and wearable weaver from Pennsylvania. Though Erika has skills as a quilt maker and repairer, she is primarily a weaver of functional wearable items and luscious textured wall hangings. All of her work focuses on the interaction of vibrant color to create striking statement pieces. Using a variety of materials for her wall hangings, she invites the viewer to explore the depth of color created. And with her wearables she focuses on the drape and texture to let the wearer encompass the rich colors and textures gracefully with next to skin softness. She views and uses her work as an escape from the craziness of the real world, creating whimsical landscapes to get lost in. We are having her on the podcast this week to help promote her first solo show, “Contemporary Weavings”. We hope you enjoy our conversation with Erika as we talk about the separation of function and decoration, sourcing materials, what it is like starting out as a professional weaver, and her first solo exhibition Find Erika online : Website | Instagram | Facebook Erika’s Exhibition : Gallery Info | Show Card - - Sponsored by : Comfortcloth Weaving LLC Read full show notes and resources at : https://proweaverpod.com/episode-24 - - Submit your Weaving Question : Ask a Weaving Question! Have you ever stood in awe of a large scale painting? When was the last time you felt like a painting sucked you in so totally that you could almost say you lost yourself in that painting? I love to explore and encounter the sheer magnificence that large scale paintings have to offer. Here to give us a welcome peek behind the curtain of his large scale paintings is the artist, Jivan Lee. Jivan Lee is an oil painter based in Taos, NM. He grew up in Woodstock, NY, and studied painting at Bard College. His work explores the nature of paint as raw material, creator of image, and catalyst for emotional response, and is increasingly addressing the complexities of how humans see and shape the environment. Jivan's paintings have been exhibited nationally and covered in publications such as Fine Art Connoisseur, The Denver Post, Hyperallergic, Southwest Art, Phoenix Home and Garden, Art Business News, and Two Coats of Paint among others. In addition to painting as much as time allows, Jivan occasionally teaches. Large scale paintings Jivan says he always gets chuckles from people when he tells them that his approach to large scale paintings doesn’t differ very much to his approach with smaller-scale paintings. Of course, the real challenge when it comes to painting these large projects is the logistics - where, when, and how become a bit more complicated on a large scale. While it might sound complicated and a bit of a nightmare, the way that Jivan describes it, the process sort of unfolded before him - as he takes each logical step at a time. Make sure to check out the images of Jivan’s artwork located at the end of this post! Letting your light shine I know, we are all sick and tired of hearing about how COVID has impacted and changed everything - we get it. I don’t want to dwell too much on how much COVID continues to impact the shape of things in the art community but I thought it was really helpful to get Jivan’s perspective. Many of us find ourselves with a ton of emotions and anxieties around our finances, the state of global and national politics, and of course COVID. Jivan was kind enough to open up about some of the personal struggles he has experienced over the last couple of months. He shared that when he takes the time to get alone with his canvas, it allows for emotional catharsis. I have felt that way too when it comes to painting during COVID - don’t want to let my light fade, I have something to share with the world and so do you! Creating art is a marathon, not a sprint As Jivan encourages us to keep shining our light even when the darkness feels like it’s closing in, it’s good to also keep in mind that the creative process is a marathon, not a sprint. You don’t have to do your best work now or consistently - just stay at it. Even when it gets challenging, remember, we need your voice. I get it, sometimes it feels like you just want to throw in the towel but every artist that I’ve talked to over the years have told me that staying in the game is worth it. What keeps you in the game? How do you stay motivated when times get tough? I want to hear from you, make sure to leave a comment! Outline of This Episode [1:30] I introduce my guest, Jivan Lee. Hey everyone. I hope you are doing well and staying safe. I don't have too much news to share these days. It seems like this whole virus situation is here to stay and I am uncertain I will be able to return to China anytime soon for work. If the EU is refusing travelers from the US, I would assume China to do the same, and for good reason. But I don't have too much to complain about as I have a roof over my head in a rural area that is OK for now in terms of ou breaks. I have been thinking more about the future direction I want to take this podcast as I normally have been interviewing friends and others I have met in person, but with the current situation, I have been thinking about expanding out. Of course, I am a bit nervous about moving forward this way. I have a number of interviews I still need to release before this happens, but the time will come soon enough. It may be for the better for this podcast. In any case, for today, I am interviewing Didier William. Originally from Port-au-prince Haiti, Didier moved to Miami as a Creole-speaking 6-year old. His interests in art blossomed there and he went on to earn his BFA in painting from The Maryland Institute College of Art and an MFA in Painting and Printmaking from Yale University. Currently, Didier is Assistant Professor of Expanded Print at Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. I first met Didier while I was at a residency in Vermont this past winter and was able to interview him around March, just as COVID's presence began being felt in the US and prior to the recent protests around the murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and many others that have surfaced with each passing week. I've been thinking a lot about how I release my episodes weeks, months, and sometimes years after the initial interview and what it means in terms of relevancy. It is something I need to figure out. Anyway, for this interview, Didier and I chat about trying to find agency in stillness, the concious privileging of certain languages, and maintaining an honest conversation about social complexities. Again, stay safe, stay healthy, and I hope you enjoy this.Links Mentioned:Didier's WebsiteDidier at Crystal BridgesDidier's Solo Exhibition at the Figge Art MuseumFollow Seeing Color:Seeing Color WebsiteSubscribe on Apple PodcastsFacebookTwitterInstagram
Episode Nineteen features June Edmonds, a west coast based abstract painter that was awarded the AWARE prize during the 2020 Armory show in NYC. AWARE, an acronym for Archives of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions is a Paris based non profit that this year debuted an award for a Solo Exhibition of Work by a Woman Artist. June’s work was exhibited by the Luis De Jesus Los Angeles Gallery. She was recognized for a never seen before body of work, her new Flag paintings. Each flag is associated with the narrative of an African American, past or present, a current event, or a chapter from American history. Her application of color incorporates an intellectual perspective reflecting on systematic disenfranchisement, emotions, and power. June has participated in several residency programs, has received many grants from well-known organizations and her paintings are held in collections throughout the United States. It gives me pleasure to highlight AWARE, the gallery for having the courage to present a solo female artist at the Armory and most of allthe talented artist June Edmonds. https://juneedmonds.com/home.htmlhttps://awarewomenartists.com/en/?s=june+edmonds https://www.luisdejesus.com/artists/june-edmonds https://hyperallergic.com/263478/we-ask-some-art-world-luminaries-to-pick-the-best-worst-of-2015/ https://autre.love/interviewsmain/2019/6/27/a-conversation-with-june-edmonds-and-luis-de-jesus

Ly Hoang Ly, photo: Trịnh Vĩnh Phúc Ly Hoàng Ly a multidisciplinary artist working across poetry, painting, video, performance art, installation and public art. She studied painting in Vietnam, later earning an MFA in Art in Studio (sculpture) through The School of the Art Institute of Chicago with Fulbright Scholarship. She also works as an editor of Youth Publishing House in Ho Chi Minh City. Ly is the first women visual artist in Vietnam doing performance art and poetry performance. Her installations incorporate a level of performance or activation between subjects and objects that unlock sensual affects in the human-materiality nexus. Ly’s previous works make bodily references to women’s cultural experiences of maternity and ministrations as well as highlight human emotions and our relationship to place and nature. Since 2011, Ly has explored the relationship of freedom and surveillance, inherited trauma, the ephemeral materiality of memory, the dislocation and the importance of community and human connection. Her art raises questions about the general human conditions, the critical states of society, and our shared issues of migration and immigration. It speaks not only on a personal level, but also on a global scale: of (mis)understandings and (mis)placement, of (trans)forming identity and being rootless, of adaptation and acceptance, of division and union, and of being human. “My advice would be to work as hard as you can on your work and get interested. Use anything you can, get hold of anything you can. Study that and work at it. You have to work at it a lot. Research, do your work, and get as much knowledge as you can from as many people as you can. That’s about it.” At the age of eighty seven Claude Van Lingen has had a long career as an artist and is still doing as much as he is able to create work everyday. He has since he was a child sought to learn about and practice art, and as an adult has additionally spent many years teaching young artists and giving back. Initially he was trained in a very academic style but then eventually got into more abstract and non conventional work and made breakthroughs after following his own advice that he gave his students in a class on creativity he created. After moving from South Africa to New York City in 1978 he gained an MFA from the Pratt Institute, and in 2006 moved to Austin. The Austin Critics Table awarded him Artist of the Year 2013-2014, and Solo Exhibition of the year 2017-2018 following a career retrospective at Co-Lab Projects (https://www.co-labprojects.org/programs-calendar/2017/9/9/timekeeper-a-claude-van-lingen-retrospective). His work often looks at the passage of time and addresses natural disasters and other issues that have been exacerbated by the impact of man on the planet. I love how dedicated Claude is to the Austin art community. You will often see him out at art openings and he does take a serious look at the work presented and researches and contemplates its meaning. It was an honor to interview him and it's wonderful to know an artist who is still so passionate about his craft and the issues that are important to him. He is also working on a book that he summarizes here: “Art, Creativity and Controversy, Why and How Artists Create Controversial Work (https://www.artcreativitycontroversy.com/) is based on the premise that it is within the philosophy and zeitgeist (spirit) of the times that innovative artists develop new ideas and use the means most suitable to interpreting them. By understanding WHY adventurous artists create unusual work skeptics will, (even if they still don't like the work) be able to discuss it intelligently and not denigrate it.” Some of the subjects we discuss: Artist Statement Concern for the world Today’s artist Educating yourself Early history Perceptual studies class Foam pieces Students work/examples Being an adventurous artist Dealing with fear and failures Examples of work TV-Mirror installation Getting the viewer thinking Writing/words in work 1000 years/the future Life to the fullest Beginnings with art Researching other artists Current and future work "TIMEKEEPER" a narrated slideshow of Claude van Lingen’s life and work from Co-Lab Projects on Vimeo.
