School kids and teachers aren't the only ones that get a summer vacation. City council, and those that cover them, also get a summer break, at least when it comes to the monthly meeting schedule. We now have a couple of weeks of meetings under our belt since August ended, but for this week's podcast we're going back in time to business at council before summer vacation. We will start in May when council said goodbye to a colleague who got a new job, and then they got into the issue of placing a daytime shelter, and whether or not that should go downtown. Downtown was a pretty big area of interest in the middle three months of meetings this year, from the upcoming big dig on Upper Wyndham and St. George's Square to the possibility of holding the Memorial Cup at the Sleeman Centre in 2027. The biggest story though might have been that council vacancy. There were times that the even number of council representatives caused some difficulties on close votes, including on the vote to appoint a replacement for Dominique O'Rourke. The appointment process was a tremendous source of drama but so was, surprisingly, the pace of new heritage designations that have been brought to council for approval over the last several months. This is just a taste of some of the council business that took place between May and July of this year. Some issues were more complicated than others, some issues turned out to be not issues at all. Council sat as a shareholder, and as a tribunal. They met for some special orientation meetings, and they had a planning matter come to a regular meeting through Strong Mayor Powers. It's a lot to cover in a little over 30 minutes, but this week we will give it a try. So let's get into the middle part of this year at city council on this week's Guelph Politicast! You can see all the council meeting agenda and find videos of all the council meetings on the City of Guelph website. Or you can get all those details with the council previews, recaps and post-views on Guelph Politico. Also, subscribe to the Guelph Politico Tip Sheet on Substack and get your council recap on Thursday morning, directly in your inbox. The host for the Guelph Politicast is Podbean. Find more episodes of the Politicast here, or download them on your favourite podcast app at Apple, TuneIn and Spotify . Also, when you subscribe to the Guelph Politicast channel and you will also get an episode of Open Sources Guelph every Monday, and an episode of End Credits every Friday.

It's a new OHL season full of promise, unless you're dumb enough to try and predict the finishing order of all ten teams in the Eastern Conference. Why should you do that, though, when Dan and Farwell are plenty dumb enough to do it for you? The guys give it the ol' college try in predicting this year's Eastern Conference and, speaking of college, that NCAA rule change is still making waves. Plus, there's a potential that more players will move to the AHL early, and a guarantee that either Kitchener or Guelph will host the 2027 Memorial Cup (the guys think they know which market will win the bid). We've also got rule changes aplenty, and plenty of complaints about the OHL's new jersey sponsor (just not from Farwell). All in all, plenty to fill your ears after a summer away. Hope your break was great! Farwell and Dan are looking forward to bringing you another season of OHL analysis, bad takes, and information from around the league. The OHL Podcast is supported by Draft Kings Sportsbook.
Coming Down the Pipe... [0:00] - The intro for Season 21 of The Pipeline Show [1:14] - Guy has a preseason WHL trade, some scores, the Listener Question of the Week and the guest list. [16:52] - Mike Johnston is the General Manager of the Portland Winterhawks, a team that you can always count on to be entertaining and competitive. This year will be no different. A great look inside from an executive that has been around junior hockey for decades. [44:31] - We stick in the U.S. Division for a deep dive on a real wild card club this year; the Wenatchee Wild. General Manager Bliss Littler introduces fans to a lot of new names as the club looks to take a new step forward in its 3rd WHL campaign. [1:10:27] - The Kelowna Rockets are going to try and pull of a rarity; to go from last place to not just reach the playoffs, but to the top of the WHL standings. They aren't going to be happy with just qualifying for the Memorial Cup as hosts because they want to win it. A monumental task to say the least but Owner and General Manager Bruce Hamilton has a plan and shares some of it with us. [1:39:25] - Closing out this episode this week is Chad Leslie, the GM of the Swift Current Broncos. The team is clearly embracing a youth movement but call it a retool and not a rebuild. Does it matter? Let's learn more about this talented but young roster.

We heard from the Memorial Cup champion following the first day on the ice in Winnipeg.
As expected, the OHL had a dominant showing at the NHL draft, with five of the first eight selections coming from the league and an overall showing that was the best the OHL has had in almost a decade. Farwell and Dan break it down and also clean a few other things out of the notebook as we head into summer, including the trade of a two-time OHL champion and a new market to emerge as a Memorial Cup bidder. Plus, just for fun in our final episode of the 2025/26 season, we make it a family affair with an appearance from Dan's older brother (who also happens to be an old friend of Farwell's). Matt Meagher makes his home in Ottawa and brings us a fan's perspective of the new arena that will be built and how strong the 67's brand remains in the nation's capital. We might pop up from time to time over the summer if news warrants an appearance, and we're always willing to talk junior hockey via email at ohlpodcast@rogers.com. In the meantime, don't forget to like, subscribe, and leave a review or comment! It all helps to maintain our momentum as we look forward to a late-summer return ahead of the next OHL season. Thanks for your loyalty in helping us become the top junior hockey podcast in Ontario! Enjoy the summer.

The San Jose Hockey Now Podcast is sponsored by Bring Hockey Back! Hello from Buffalo! Sheng is at the Draft Combine and we talk about what the San Jose Sharks can learn from the Buffalo Sabres' forever rebuild with Bill Hoppe. Hoppe has covered the Sabres since 2002, check out his work at Buffalo Hockey Beat! (43:38) But before we chat with Bill, Keegan and Sheng talk about Sam Dickinson and Kasper Halttunen winning the Memorial Cup, and the increased chatter about Dickinson making the San Jose Sharks full-time next year. (05:30) Why was a one-year contract for Shakir Mukhamadullin ideal for both sides? But could the Sharks regret it? (10:55) William Eklund and the San Jose Sharks have begun contract extension talks. Why is that a good sign? (15:00) With the Dallas Stars getting eliminated, we know the Sharks have the No. 30 pick of the 2025 Draft. What's the latest Combine gossip? (22:30) And now, Bill! (43:38) Looking back at the 14 years out of the playoffs, what can the San Jose Sharks learn about what not to do in a rebuild from the Buffalo Sabres? (50:40) What went wrong in the Jack Eichel era? Before Eichel was drafted in 2015, the Sabres had missed the playoffs with more competitive teams…what went wrong there? (59:30) How did the Sabres lose Sam Reinhart's loyalty? Breaking down the Sabres' 14 years in the wilderness, the first stage out of the playoffs was the last stages of an older, formerly winning team…the second stage was the Eichel era…the third era of the rebuild was post-Eichel and Reinhart, the Kevyn Adams era. How does Bill see the San Jose Sharks' rebuild coming along? (1:17:30) Speaking of the Sabres today, what's going on with defenseman Bo Byram? Why did Buffalo put him on the trade block? (1:30:10) Is there a chance that defensemen Rasmus Dahlin or Owen Power could be made available? (1:37:10) What would the Sabres want in a trade for a Byram, are the San Jose Sharks a good trade partner? What's the importance of stability in management and behind the bench? Bill thinks Mike Grier is the man for the Sharks' job…if they stick with him.

Craig Button got hour two started today. He recapped the Memorial Cup, gave some love to the London Knights and Oilers prospect Sam O'Rielly. Touched on the Oilers and Panthers strengths and weaknesses and the importance of Stuart Skinner's play in this series. Craig finished with his thoughts on the pleasant surprise of John Klingberg. We then gave our Play Alberta Early Bird Bet of the day, right before an updater for Park Mazda. Ryan Rishaug got the show started right after the break. He first touched on the business approach the Oilers have this year compared to last year. He gave his thoughts on Knoblauch and finished with a prediction on this series! We finished off hour one with Weekly Confessions from Spectrum Rent All. Like always, plenty of good confessions on today's show.
It's hard not to admire greatness and the London Knights put on a show for the ages this season, starting the campaign on a mission to win a Memorial Cup and becoming just the fourth team in the past 53 years to win three (joining Windsor, Cornwall, and Kamloops). London's trio of trophies have all come since 2005, while Windsor won their three in a 9-year span (discuss amongst yourselves). No matter how you slice it, it's impressive as hell and haters are gonna hate, but you have to tap your stick to the Knights, their program, and their relentless pursuit of the 2025 title. London lost just one OHL playoff game and one Memorial Cup game en route to the championship. There's more to the OHL than London, though, and the guys have got concerns that the North American junior-aged hockey scales are beginning to tilt the NCAA's way. Plus, Barrie will have to get used to life without Marty behind the bench, the IceDogs find their GM, and OA goalies might have to find a place to play as the OHL decides against allowing an extra 20-year old roster spot for netminders. The OHL Podcast is supported by Draft Kings Sportsbook.
