S3E41 - For the Glory KC is back with the 106th episode of the show. This week, there is very little Sporting Kansas City in the episode, but they always find their way into the show, simply for comparisons sake if nothing else. Plus, I ran into Graham Zusi at the KC Current game, so we have to talk about that! Instead of SKC, this is a KC Current focused episode considering they just won a home playoff game in the NWSL for the first time in a decade (and that was FCKC). Kansas City hosted the North Carolina Courage and pulled out a 1-0 win on an 8th minute Temwa Chawinga goal. To break it all down, Xander Kennedy joins the show this week as one of our resident KC Current experts here at the KC Soccer Journal. He and I go through the changes to the lineup and if it was the best path to victory. We break down the team effort that led to the Chawinga goal and find a few unsung heroes on that play. The game wasn't one way traffic either, as NC had some big chances, including the wide-open miss by Alene Gomes and the goal that was called off for a foul by Manaka on Almuth Schult. Speaking of Schult, we both sing her praises as she's in the 99th percentile in some key goalkeeping stats. And the topic of protecting Temwa had to come up after the referee let her basically be abused throughout the match, something that didn't go unnoticed by Vlatko Andonovski. It led to an interesting scuffle between Bianca St. George and Ellie Wheeler after BSG taunted Temwa after hacking her to the ground. Xander and I also share some Graham Zusi stories, talk about Inter Miami being bounced from the MLS Cup Playoffs and the rest of the NWSL playoff matchups. In the Digital Crawl, we touch on a few topics, including: Ian James and Jack Kortkamp get callups for SKC Jim Curtin is out at the Philadelphia Union While Bruce Arena is in over at the San Jose Earthquakes Plus, the USL Super League, USL Championship and USL League One all get into the show Here is a rundown of topics (and approximate start times): KC Current win a playoff game - 1:58 MLS Update - 1:06:30 Digital Crawl - 1:13:14 Upcoming Schedule: KC Current @ Orlando Pride, Sun Nov 17th at 2:00PM CST Sporting KC and SKC II seasons are over... Soccer training is on its final days and Kansas City once again will have two teams in action. Sporting Kansas City is on a mission to repeat as MLS Western Conference champs. KC NWSL is the women’s team that returns to the region. The team formerly known as FCKC left Kansas City in 2017. The women will open next week. The men’s first game is April 17, and beat writer Shaun Goodwin is back to discuss all things soccer. There is also a rant about the United States’ failure to qualify for the Olympic Games. Sporting Coach Peter Vermes gets in on that. Story links: Ask not what this newcomer can do for SKC, but also what SKC can do for him Shut out of Olympics again: Peter Vermes has some thoughts about latest U-23 stumble Here’s who won the starting goalkeeper job for KC NWSL team Learn more about your ad choices. Aly talks with Darian about being landlocked in the midwest for the first time, what it was like working with former FCKC coach Vlatko Andonovski at OL Reign and how it helped her grow as a player, experience playing in France and Australia and how it compares to NWSL and so much more! We keep rolling along with our 2020 roundup and focus in on OL Reign and the NWSL. Joining us this week are Susie Rantz (@susierants), Sounder at Heart contributor and co-host of the Coffee & Valkyries Podcast, and Andrew Harvey (@soccervox), communications manager for OL Reign and broadcast voice for the Tacoma Defiance, Tacoma Stars, Seattle Pacific University Men's Team, Seattle University Men's Soccer, and University of Washington's Men's and Women's Soccer Teams. We start off by speculating on the now official loan of Jordan Morris to Swansea City A.F.C. of the English Championship (currently 2nd) and what that might mean not only for Jordan's career and USMNT exposure, but also for the Sounders are they are set to begin the 2021 MLS campaign in the near future and will have to address Morris' short term (or perhaps long term) absence from the team. We also discuss the departure of Sounders sporting director Chris Henderson to Inter Miami CF where he will assume the mantle of Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director for the second-year MLS club. In addition to the loan fee for Jordan Morris, the Sounders may be seeing a decent cash influx due to Henry Wingo's continued career progression as he makes a move from Swedish side Molde to Hungarian side Ferencvaros TC. MLS continues to engage in discussions with the MLSPA through the media in an attempt to negotiate an updated CBA, much to the collective frustration of everyone. After taking last season off due to Covid-19 concerns and to recover from some lingering injuries, Megan Rapinoe has returned to the USWNT in their January camp and ideally OL Reign once the NWSL season starts later this spring. The USWNT played two fixtures against a scrappy and young Colombian side this week winning the first 4-0 and the second 6-0. The USWNT head coach is former OL Reign coach, Vlatko Andonovski. While there is no official start date for OL Reign and the rest of the NWSL, plans seem to be to replicate the Challenge Cup format to kick the season off, which logistically may be difficult to do in the same fashion with the Utah Royals returning to Kansas City under new ownership. What does the roster look like for OL Reign heading into the 2021 season? While it may be a little early for full roster analysis, the team looks to be strong at all positions as they look to head into training camp in the coming weeks. We discuss the recent trade of Darian Jenkins to Kansas City for Tziarra King, who had a very strong rookie season in Utah for the Royals not only on the field but also in taking a lead on speaking out on social and racial justice issues. We also discuss FCKC coming back into the NWSL fold and how Jenkins can make an impact under a new ownership group. Potential expansion back into the Utah market in the future could happen again though that prospect is complicated due to the current infrastructure of Utah's professional soccer teams is still controlled by a horrible person. We keep on that topic and discuss upcoming league expansion and the possibility of other European ownership groups entering into the league in the same fashion as Olympique Lyonnais. Will we still have a soccer specific stadium in Tacoma? Pre Covid-19 pandemic support for the stadium was high across the board. Should more funding come from the teams that will be playing in a future stadium to take more pressure off of the city? Does the continued existence of OL Reign in Tacoma hinge on the stadium being built in the same time frame? We talk about the fall out of Tony Parker's off the cuff comments about wanting to move the team to Miami and OL's commitment to having two players come play for OL Reign for the 2021 season (Wendie Renard anyone?). OL Reign are set to begin training camp on February 1st here in the Tacoma area to prepare for the Challenge Cup. We talk about their training environment and available facilities to them. There was this one time that I was able to get someone on the podcast that played in a UEFA Champions League match... this is that person! Maegan Kelly joins us from Houston where she is enjoying the off-season with the Houston Dash following up a 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup. Maegan is yet another KC native who spent her HS days at St. Teresa's where she made quite an impact starting her freshmen year. From there we go Into her days laying at Marquette University and of course her Draft Day story being selected by FCKC in 2014.The story then gets a little more interesting as Maegan takes her talents overseas to Iceland, Finland and Italy and how she was able to play in the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE while in Italy. The story doesn't stop there as we talk about Maegan's time with the Canadian National team, playing for the now U.S. Women's national Team coach (Vlatko Andonovsky) and put an end to the debate on which Kelly sister (Maegan or Katie) is the better of the two. Riddled with injuries and inter-state duty, the podcast roster was down to Cody and Thad this week. But the summer of soccer has given us a lot to discuss as of late. The United States Women's National Team are FIFA World Cup Champions for the fourth time and the celebrations have been so much fun to watch! The USMNT were able to make the Gold Cup final against Mexico, but still came up a bit short falling 1-0. And SKC get a much needed win that hopefully marks the beginning of their climb through the ranks of the West. With Megan Rapinoe & Rose Lavelle netting the goals, the US took down the Netherlands to become World Champs yet again. The country, especially Kansas City, were all the way behind them and the party has yet to stop. The girls are enjoying the wave, but how long will this last? Can the NWSL parlay this hype into something more for the sport? The scenes from PnL (somehow) had some wondering if fans were to blame for the demise of FCKC. Thad is a HUGE fan of the women's game and we discuss the failures of their ownership as well as problems with fans. We also spent some time on the USMNT's Gold Cup performance. While the end result may not have been what everyone wanted, there was progress made. We are witnessing a changing of the guard as Weston McKennie, Aaron Long, and Christian Pulisic take charge of the team. But there is still clearly a long way to go - on the field and off. Can Omar Gonzalez really be a part of the team going forward? The same could be asked of Michael Bradley as well. Yohan Croizet has scored in back-to-back matches and Sporting Kansas City moved out of last place in the Western Conference. The Transfer Window has opened and Peter Vermes claims to be looking at 30 players, but Cody & Thad think the most useful reinforcements will come by way of players returning from injury. Aside from Jaylin Lindsey and Rodney Wallace, everyone is training again. Roger Espinoza is on the road back for a huge boost in the midfield, and Erik Hurtado is nearing a return as well. Hurtado should light a fire under the struggling Krisztian Nemeth. There will be some choices to make for the lineup against the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday. We come up with a game-plan for the lineup and substitutions to get a win. The fans are leaning towards Graham Zusi over Nico Hasler, but perhaps more surprising is Croizet leading the way over Nemeth at striker. Learn more about your ad choices. JJ and Kieran return to talk about the big news in the NWSL with Real Salt Lake joining the league (name of women's team to be confirmed) in the place of FC Kansas City. We're joined by former Kansas City Star reporter Ashley Scoby to discuss the folding of FCKC. There's chat on the Women's Champions League, the latest on the situation with Denmark, and we also chat to Tom Marshall, a British journalist based in Mexico about the Liga MX Femenil (Mexican League).
In which JP & Zippy embrace each other as they discuss the shocking and sad departure of Caleb Porter from the Timbers. As well the boys talk FCKC of the NWSL moving to Salt Lake, if Laura Harvey will be back in the NWSL next year, and JP finally forces Zippy to watch Arrival...and he won't shut up about it. A sad day for the Rose City all around.

I believe his comments and insights are interesting to consider coming out of and going into each game. After Coach's comments is my interview with Megan Oyster. It's game day! Today's podcast will reflect on last week's loss, preview today's game, and feature Kelsey Wys. The Spirit were flat against Sky Blue last week and it led to a disappointing loss. Now that the Olympic team players are gone, new leadership has a chance to step up and bring the Spirit back to winning form. The first segment off today's show includes post-game interviews with Coach Gabarra and Crystal Dunn. Following that is my interview with goalkeeper Kelsey Wys. Kelsey talks about how she got into soccer, her chemistry with the team, and which player is most likely to have a body buried in their back yard. Let us know if you agree with Kelsey's answer. Which Spirit player would you expect to have that? Tell us on Twitter: @KelseyWys @SpiritCoverage @TimLawson
