Two games into the NWSL season and things couldn't be going much worse for the soccer team formerly known as the Chicago Red Stars. An underwhelming rebrand, lack of reinforcements and absent Mallory Swanson led into what's been a terrible start on the field. Alex recaps a drubbing in Orlando and blown lead at home before being joined by Lesley Ryder of Gal Pal Sports and Defector to commiserate.
Christian Polanco and Alexis Guerreros react to major MLS and NWSL storylines over the weekend including Lionel Messi and Inter Miami beating Atlanta United on Sunday, getting revenge for their playoff loss to to the same team last season. The Assistant Professor of Football: Soccer, Culture, History.
Note: This is an unusual episode, in reaction to the events unfolding Thursday and Friday, with little time to edit or the usual setup. All sounds fine and is audible, but not as nice as usual. My apologies!Back last Summer, many Premier League clubs announced they would change, or do away with, "concession tickets" for seniors and youth, as well as a price hike on season tickets. Resistance formed at many clubs, but at West Ham, it seemed particularly organized, creative and social media savvy. In August, I talked with Alex, a chief initiator of the #SaveOurConcessions campaign online and on matchdays, home and away, as well as with Andy Payne of Hammers United and now the club's fan advisory board about their strategy to fight back. I predicted a "Fall storm." In recent weeks, not only did Liverpool announce a price freeze, West Ham restored all concessions and also froze season tickets. Seemingly out of nowhere, right before a home game. To Andy and Alex of course, the change is the result of months of hard work. This is a look behind the curtain at how a Premier League club makes bad business decisions, how fans mobilize, and how pragmatism and solidarity, creativity and activism make a difference for local fans even in the most glitzy league in the world.Unfortunately, the counter-example of today's fan activism omnibus episode comes from Chicago, where the Chicago Red Stars of the National Women's Soccer League changed their name to "Stars" without any organized protests by an otherwise fairly organized fanscene. One lone voice from Chicago was willing to speak on the record about why that might be. HELPFUL LINKS FOR THIS EPISODE:Hammers United website, incl. press releases and statements by the group as the protests went on (full disclosure, I signed)The club's statement, with some background from Hammers United on their website"Save Our Concessions" initial petition, with over 20,000 signatures"Black Bubble Protest" by West Ham fans away at Crystal palace (X, video)NEW: send me a text message! The sports business is booming. You've probably seen the headlines. An NFL team sold for $6 billion, and private equity is pouring money into almost anything that involves a ball or a stick. For law firms, that means opportunity. More Big Law firms view the business of sports as a target for the types of megadeals that drive revenue. Naturally, there's a lot more competition coming for a practice area that was once dominated by only a handful of repeat players. On this episode of On The Merits, Bloomberg Law's Roy Strom spoke with Sidley Austin's Irwin Raij and Eric Geffner. The veteran dealmakers have guided transactions involving the NBA's Charlotte Hornets, the NFL's Washington Commanders and Carolina Panthers, and women's pro soccer franchise the Chicago Red Stars. Raij and Geffner discussed why sports deals work is a "very sexy practice right now" that's getting the attention from more major firms. They also talked about the growth of investments in women's sports and new opportunities for private equity in the National Football League. Do you have feedback on this episode of On The Merits? Cari Roccaro was a standout college player at Notre Dame before establishing herself as a rookie on the Houston Dash, the National Women's Soccer League's first expansion team. She then won two NWSL championships with the North Carolina Courage and was part of Angel City FC's first season before settling in most recently as a key player for the Chicago Red Stars. Roccaro has also had an impact off the field. The Orlando Pride made it two wins in a row with a 4-1 home victory over the Chicago Red Stars. More importantly, the Pride got their first-ever NWSL playoff victory in their first-ever home postseason game. Barbra Banda returned to the scoresheet in a big way, netting a brace that could have been four or five goals the way she was creating chances. Orlando had a couple of goals overturned and hit the post twice, saving Chicago from a true playoff beating. It was good to see the offense back, but the defense also did well, not allowing a first-half shot and only giving up a goal on one of the sillier mistakes of the season. We break down the match, look back at our score predictions, and make our selections for Player of the Match. After our match rewind, we welcome Orlando Pride forward Ally Watt to the show. Ally was generous with her time and spoke about the Pride's season, the Chicago game, the closeness the players feel for one another, the upcoming clash with Kansas City, and much more. Big thanks to Ally for her time. Our mailbagbox this week included some jubilation as well as questions about Bingo cards, Haley McCutcheon, Ally Watt as a starter, Summer Yates, and more. Remember, you can ask us anything by hitting us up on Twitter at either @TheManeLand or @SkoPurpSoccer and using the hashtag #AskSkoPurp. Or you can visit our show page, scroll down, and fill out the handy form. We'd also appreciate any ratings or reviews you can leave wherever you get your podcasts, and if you do that on Apple Podcasts, we'll find them easily and read them on the show. After the mailbagbox, we previewed the upcoming NWSL semifinal match against the Kansas City Current. The Pride will have to try to slow down Golden Boot winner Temwa Chawinga, while respecting the Current midfield and looking for a way to break through a defense that has become stingy over the last two months of the season. We provide our key matchups and try to predict the final score. Here's how Episode 69 went down: 0:15 – Orlando picked up its first postseason win by destroying the Chicago Red Stars. It was only 4-1 but could have been so much more lopsided. 15:53 – Ally Watt jumps on the call to talk about the playoffs and the Orlando Pride in the playoffs. 41:17 – Our mailbagbox has comments as well as questions, and we take a look ahead to Sunday's playoff semifinal showdown against the Current.
The National Women's Soccer League playoffs kick off tonight with a matchup between No. 1 Orlando Pride and No. 8 Chicago Red Stars, followed by more quarterfinal round matches on Saturday and Sunday. But both on and off the pitch, the NWSL has arrived in a new era. Jeff Kassouf, lead women's soccer writer at ESPN, is here to discuss the league's recent seismic shifts, including the players' new collective bargaining agreement – both the unprecedented power it gives players and the ripple effect it's creating for management. Plus, a preview of the game action itself, including a primer for the less-initiated into the league's most exciting players like Temwa Chawinga and Barbra Banda, and what to watch for in the most-anticipated matchups. Lisa Carlin, Darian Jenkins, and Sandra Herrera kick off the show by breaking down all the NWSL 2024 Playoff matches starting with Orlando Pride vs Chicago Red Stars. Then, they discuss KC Current vs NC Courage, Washington Spirit vs Bay FC, and finally, Gotham FC vs Portland Thorns. Next, the A3 crew reassess the Final NWSL Draft Class, which is loaded with talent that showed out all season long both on the domestic and international levels. And finally, a chat about those NWSL teams that just "missed the cut" this year. Why didn't they make the playoffs? And what do they need to change going forward. The Orlando Pride returned home over the weekend and returned to their winning ways with a 3-2 victory over the Seattle Reign. Although Barbra Banda still isn't scoring goals, three of her teammates did so, including Marta, who made her mark on the match despite it not being her best outing of the season. The defense is still a bit of a concern, but it did just about enough to get the job done. We look back at the match and our score predictions to see how well we prognosticated the proceedings. Our mailbagbox this week included my belated reaction to "Hot to Go" and asked about the worst rule in soccer, broadcasters who don't seem to favor the Pride, and whether Orlando's defense can regain its form. After the mailbagbox, we remembered that we hadn't selected a Player of the Match against Seattle, so we rectified that. Finally, we previewed the upcoming playoff game against the Chicago Red Stars. The Pride will have to avoid switching off defensively and will have to be clinical on the attacking end in order to advance. Orlando has historically struggled at home against Chicago, but there's no better time to start changing fortunes. Here's how Episode 68 went down: 0:15 – Orlando is back in the win column, finishing the season without a home loss. The Pride will try to keep that streak alive Friday vs. Chicago. 21:19 – Our mailbagbox is asking about horrible soccer rules and all manner of things. 37:21 – Our look ahead to Friday night's playoff opener against the Red Stars.

S3E40 - For the Glory KC is back with the 105th episode of the show. This week, we do what we've teased off and on for months. We play Fantasy Sporting Director (move aside Mike Burns!) for Sporting Kansas City. It's something we did last year too. I imagine, you may want to play along as well. We'd love to hear from you in the comments, or on the various social media accounts we plug at the end of every podcast, who you would or wouldn't keep. There are 16 players that are either out of contract or on options years. Do you bring people back at a discount? Move on entirely? How much turnover do you foresee. We've already made the case the overhaul may not come this offseason, though movement definitely will. Sheena and I agreed on a few moves, but there was a surprising divide on a few players and some relatively big names we've decided to move on from (though we did a fair amount of waffling). We also both briefly discussed the reaction to my editorial from the week, "Blame Ownership, Not Vermes, for Sporting KC's Failings." Additionally, the KC Current deserve our attention after another win to wrap up their 2024 regular season. They have scored more goals than any team in NWSL history, and they did so in an essentially meaningless game. Well, it wasn't meaningless for the Chicago Red Stars, but you couldn't tell from their play in the first half. Chicago fell to 8th place and hit the road to face the Orlando Pride, while KC already knew they'd be hosting the North Carolina Courage next weekend in the opening round of the playoffs. Sheena and I briefly talked about the happenings in MLS including upsets of Real Salt Lake, Inter Miami and the Columbus Crew in the playoffs. Plus, FIFA playing games by putting Miami in the Club World Cup against MLS's wishes. In the Digital Crawl, we touch on a few topics, including: Alenis Vargas gets a call-up The US U-17 Women win Bronze at the World Cup And San Diego has a stadium problem ahead of MLS Expansion next year Here is a rundown of topics (and approximate start times): Fantasy Sporting KC Sporting Director - 4:30 My ‘Controversial' Vermes Editorial - 55:38 KC Current won a meaningless game - 1:05:46 MLS Updates - 1:16:06 Digital Crawl - 1:22:46 Upcoming Schedule: KC Current vs. North Carolina Courage - Sat. Nov 9th @ 11:00AM CST Sporting KC and SKC II seasons are over... We recently turned on "Listener Support." NEW: send me a text message! (I'd love to hear your thoughts - texts get to me anonymously, without charge or signup) Martin Luther (not the King) nailed 95 protest theses against the Christian church of his day to a church door in Germany on October 31st 1517. And Protestants , properly understood, have been protesting ever since. As we near "Reformation Day" again, David Kilpatrick, a Professor of English and Sports Managment, channels that spirit of protest to the world of soccer. His playful, bold and short book "95 Theses on the Reformation of Football: Disputation on the Power and Efficacy of Glocal Football Governance" stands in a strong tradition of critical and intelligent football literature on this podcast. A listener himself, David and I roamed anywhere between 16th century Germany, the New York Cosmos, youth soccer and the mess that is FIFA. In this longer episode before a Fall break, you will also get an update from Wayne (of the Red Bull and Leeds United episode 4 weeks ago) on the anointing of Jürgen Klopp as the head of Red Bull's soccer empire, and a critique of what is happening (or not) with the Chicago Red Stars. The Chicago Red Stars own one of the worst xG differentials in league history. Only the Utah Royals have played worse in total this season. But Chicago just clinched a playoff berth, and look poised to finish the year in sixth place on a mere 1.3 points per game. No team since 2018 has finished sixth or higher with so few points. Can it really just be luck? Is their low-volume, high-efficiency attack and defense sustainable once they face better teams in the postseason? The guys dissect the Red Stars' 2-0 defeat to Gotham, and whether that result--combined with horrible recent performances against San Diego and Houston--can be overcome once November rolls around. We have got some things to cover, here! The guys get into the news of Angel City's fines and suspensions for salary cap violations, the firing of former Houston Dash head coach Fran Alonso, the absurdity of the Chicago Red Stars conceding at least three xG for the second time in three weeks, Bay FC's four-minute meltdown, and the Orlando Pride's historic Shield win. Then, it's on to the main events. Portland has been one of the worst teams in the NWSL since the end of the Olympics break. Racing Louisville has been fighting to get over the playoff line. Neither team did themselves any favors with two very different losses. Which team has the edge to go to the quarterfinals in November? The air is crisp, the leaves are changing... its time for the NWSL Chaos season! We look at the league table and convince ourselves the Chicago Red Stars have a chance to make the playoffs. We've got a new CBA, an anonymous GM survey, and a whole group of people who need to learn how to adapt to the needs of women's sports. Plus! We take AI articles straight to the trash, and award sportsmanship of the week to a legend of the game. Follow along on our adventures @GalPalSports across social media.
The Orlando Pride dominated statistically but got just enough offense to win on a Marta wonderstrike from outside the box in a 1-0 road win on Sunday against the Chicago Red Stars. Although the Pride kept Mallory Swanson quiet, Orlando needed a bit more sharpness in front of goal to open the game up. It never happened, but Marta's NWSL Goal of the Week helped Orlando secure three more points on the road. We broke down the game, checked back at our score predictions from last week, and made our selections for Player of the Match. Our mailbagbox this week had concerns about whether Orlando should stay undefeated in the regular season, whether stoppage time is an issue, whether the soccer gods have an axe to grind with Barbra Banda, and whether Evelina Duljan should play more minutes with Banda. After the mailbagbox, we discussed Amanda Allen's loan to Lexington, McKinley Crone's new contract through 2026, and Banda's recent scoring drought. Finally, we look ahead to Orlando's home match Friday against the Kansas City Current. The visitors will be looking for revenge from the first meeting and their perceived slights when Pride players were happy about the result in that match. We also provided our key matchups and score predictions for the game. Here's how Episode 60 went down: 0:15 – The Pride kept rolling with another clean sheet and a win at Chicago. 12:59 – Our mailbagbox is chock full, as is our Orlando Pride news segment. 39:50 – Our preview of the rematch against the Kansas City Current, who totally won't celebrate like crazy if they win after playing more than half the match a player down on the road. Honest.
On this week's episode we battle through technical difficulties, microphone issues, and one overly purr-sistent guest while discussing Racing's emphatic win over Chicago and their disappointing loss to Seattle. Despite the result this past weekend, we remain excited about the direction the team is headed in. We also discuss the inconsistency of NWSL reffing and what we'd like to see from Racing's new signings. Support the Show.
