S3E41 - For the Glory KC is back with the 106th episode of the show. This week, there is very little Sporting Kansas City in the episode, but they always find their way into the show, simply for comparisons sake if nothing else. Plus, I ran into Graham Zusi at the KC Current game, so we have to talk about that! Instead of SKC, this is a KC Current focused episode considering they just won a home playoff game in the NWSL for the first time in a decade (and that was FCKC). Kansas City hosted the North Carolina Courage and pulled out a 1-0 win on an 8th minute Temwa Chawinga goal. To break it all down, Xander Kennedy joins the show this week as one of our resident KC Current experts here at the KC Soccer Journal. He and I go through the changes to the lineup and if it was the best path to victory. We break down the team effort that led to the Chawinga goal and find a few unsung heroes on that play. The game wasn't one way traffic either, as NC had some big chances, including the wide-open miss by Alene Gomes and the goal that was called off for a foul by Manaka on Almuth Schult. Speaking of Schult, we both sing her praises as she's in the 99th percentile in some key goalkeeping stats. And the topic of protecting Temwa had to come up after the referee let her basically be abused throughout the match, something that didn't go unnoticed by Vlatko Andonovski. It led to an interesting scuffle between Bianca St. George and Ellie Wheeler after BSG taunted Temwa after hacking her to the ground. Xander and I also share some Graham Zusi stories, talk about Inter Miami being bounced from the MLS Cup Playoffs and the rest of the NWSL playoff matchups. In the Digital Crawl, we touch on a few topics, including: Ian James and Jack Kortkamp get callups for SKC Jim Curtin is out at the Philadelphia Union While Bruce Arena is in over at the San Jose Earthquakes Plus, the USL Super League, USL Championship and USL League One all get into the show Here is a rundown of topics (and approximate start times): KC Current win a playoff game - 1:58 MLS Update - 1:06:30 Digital Crawl - 1:13:14 Upcoming Schedule: KC Current @ Orlando Pride, Sun Nov 17th at 2:00PM CST Sporting KC and SKC II seasons are over... We tried to prepare ourselves last week, but the finality of the decisions to move on from Graham Zusi and Roger Espinoza have us feeling some kind of way. We spend some time memorializing their impact and discuss how things may move forward from here. Speaking of moving forward, the roster decisions allowed Drew to do his annual nerdy spreadsheet work and talk through multiple ways SKC could potentially strengthen their roster this winter or perhaps in the summer. Things are far more positive than in years past while still having a good base of a team to work with. Music by The Spin Wires
S2E55 - For the Glory KC is back with the 62nd episode of the show! On this week's episode, Sporting Kansas City made a series of massive roster decisions likely ending the KC soccer careers of Roger Espinoza and Graham Zusi. Sheena and I commiserate, remember fond times and get some of the feels out about their departure. On top of that, we talk about if the moves make sense and how we wanted to see their careers end. Plus, could they end up on other clubs? There is a lot of Roger and Zusi talk to kick off the pod. Then we move to the other moves on the roster. From Kortne Ford and the center back situation to our child's proclamation that she has disowned the team over Cam Duke's departure. We can't skip Sheena's favorite player Remi Walter, or the news Johnny Russell is coming back and what that means for roster spend and flexibility. There is still a fair amount to discuss around the rest of the roster including Gadi Kinda, Kendall McIntosh, Stephen Afrifa, Willy Agada and more. Beyond that, Peter Vermes has already come out and said the team needs a backup goalkeeper, left back for the injured Ndenbe, another CB (they already have five), midfielders plural and help in the attack. With 24 roster spots filled and only six available, that's six players right there. We give an early preview of what else we think this team needs to do this offseason. Additionally, PV addresses the talk of a fourth Designated Player and changes to the current DP rules and we weigh in on that. Then we speed through the handball that PRO got wrong, and the Sporting KC II roster moves. Finally, we get to the Digital Crawl. We breeze through the following topics: The next USMNT friendly was announced Tim Howard is going into the soccer HOF Matt Miazga gets suspended And the MLS offseason calendar Here is a quick rundown of topics (and approximate start times): Thank you, listeners! - 5:11 Zusi and Espinoza are gone - 7:05 Ford, Duke, McIntosh, Russel, Remi, other moves and PV's needs - 28:20 Is there going to be a 4th Designated Player? - 49:46 PRO admits they got it wrong on the handball call - 55:55 SKC II's roster moves - 1:03:00 Digital Crawl - 1:06:25 Spotify took away our ads, so we turned on "Listener Support." Sporting KC were unceremoniously eliminated from the MLS Cup playoffs Sunday night in Houston. The team maintained their 4-4-2 mid block/low-pressure setup meant to create counterattacking opportunities that worked so well against St Louis, but it was ineffective against Houston. We discuss the tactical plan, whether it was the most appropriate choice, and the struggles the team had in getting quality goal scoring chances from the transition events they created. There was of course a dubious non-call that blanketed much of the conversation of this game, so we give it the appropriate coverage, while also considering the mistakes outside the referees and how, while unlucky, it shouldn't be the primary focus of fans' ire. Graham Zusi and Roger Espinoza may have played their last minutes for Sporting KC, we discuss their impact at the club, and how the club still struggles to replace their influence. We will know Friday if one or both are sticking around, along with a number of other players. Next week will include a much deeper dive into roster construction going into 2024. A quick MLS Cup final prediction to close things out. Music by The Spin Wires
S2E38 - For the Glory KC is back with the 45th episode of the show and it's a weird one. No co-host, just me talking to myself. If that sounds like something you'd like to listen to, give it a go. On this week's episode, Sporting Kansas City beat the best team in Mexico in the Leagues Cup (and were a 96th minute handball away from beating the best team in MLS). That said, how much of that was the schedule finally favoring Sporting KC for the first time in a long time? I definitely think it was a factor with the short rest for Chivas, which was compounded by their game against FC Cincinnati being delayed the better part of a day due to the weather. But it's not all pessimism (I think it was a resounding performance overall). Plus, injury updates on Tim Melia, Willy Agada and Graham Zusi are forthcoming. The ladies can't be left out though! The KC Current were back in action and their injury woes continue. They had a chance to almost lock down a spot in the semi-finals of the UKG Challenge Cup but instead give the Chicago Red Stars their first point of the whole tournament (here is that chart I referenced). Plus, the United States squeak their way out of the group stage, and I give a first-hand account of the action in Auckland, New Zealand. Don't worry y'all, Sheena will be back next week. Here is a quick rundown of topics (and approximate start times): Sporting KC control and defeat Chivas - 2:10 KC Current draw Chicago - 15:30 USWNT Survive and Advance - 20:05 Digital Crawl - 28:01 Upcoming Games Sporting KC vs. Toluca - Fri, August 4th @ 8:00PM CST USWNT vs. Unknown (but Probably Sweden) - Sun, August 6th @ 5:00AM SKC II @ Houston Dynamo 2 - Sun, Aug, 6th @ 6:00PM KC Current vs. Racing Louisville - Sun, Aug, 6th @ 7:00PM (CMP) --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/fortheglorykc/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/fortheglorykc/support
S2E10 - On this week's first episode Sheena and Chad split the podcast into two halves. The first one of the week is a recap of the Colorado Rapids game where Sporting Kansas City managed a draw. We go back to Sheena's positive, negative and ‘ehh' takeaways. Plus, we break down the new center back signing so our podcast can no longer be a CB podcast and can focus on the remaining games of the season. And we give our thoughts on the second week of MLS 360, which was a big improvement over week one (but we've still got some suggestions if you are on the fence about subscribing to MLS Season Pass). 1st Bonus: Our daughter returns for “kid's corner.” Here is a quick rundown of topics and their start times: SKC/Colorado Draw (we get right to soccer!) SKC finally make a big CB signing! 32:50 Week 2 of MLS Season Pass: 36:30 Digital Crawl - 42:40 Here is that breakdown of why the Graham Zusi touch was not an own goal and he probably cleared it in time (based on available camera angles) (https://twitter.com/OffsideModeling/status/1632232384933380100) --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/fortheglorykc/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/fortheglorykc/support
Khiry's back. An aging lineup. Tons of questions about the backline. Sporting KC opens the MLS season with a shutout loss. It's time to panic, right? A quick glance at fan reactions across the internet seem to indicate a resounding yes. With injuries to the three best players on the team, Peter Vermes once again trotted out an aging lineup against the Portland Timbers in the 2023 season opener. Relying too much on Graham Zusi, Roger Espinoza, and Ben Sweat is not something anybody wants to see this season. Khiry Shelton on the right wing was another one sure to have fans groaning. As new & returning players get to full fitness, what would you do with the Starting XI? We look at all options, including Marinos Tzionis, who turned in a solid shift off the bench. Many questions were answered... just not the way we wanted. Robert Voloder showed he still has kinks to work out. Ben Sweat is still Ben Sweat. A bright spot was Remi Walter. He was deployed in the holding midfield role and was probably the best player on the field for SKC. Erik Thommy, rocking the Captain's arm band, looked like he is ready to show us a new level to his game after an impressive first season. Is 1-0 away at Portland cause to panic? Reinforcements are coming and this lineup isn't exactly what we can expect all season. Next up is the Colorado Rapids, who will be missing the absolute pest of Diego Rubio. The vets are back. Graham Zusi, Roger Espinoza, and Andreu Fontas will all three be returning for Sporting KC in 2023. It's safe to assume each of them is returning for less money. Fontas looks like the starter for next year, but what about Espinoza and Zusi? There are other healthy bodies in the midfield at the moment, but Roger always seems to find his way back into the starting lineup. How much will Kayden Pierre push Zusi for the starting job at right back? A few individual moments of lapses in judgment did in the Americans against The Netherlands in the Round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup. The young team was tired after expending everything to reach the main goal of surviving the group stage, and were beaten by a superior opponent. But Louis Van Gaal also got the best of Gregg Berhalter. Berhalter is a curious case and a hot-button issue among US Soccer fans. There's many reasons to disagree and dislike some of his decisions. But in this World Cup cycle the Yanks won a couple tournaments, qualified for the World Cup, and then advanced out of the group stage. Gregg did his job. What he failed to do was reach another level for the USMNT. The foundation has been laid, but it's time for a new voice. The Media Game was a success. In that Thad survived. Cody missed the email. But the worse things get for Sporting KC.. the more we have to talk about. We though the low point of the season had come months ago. The team seemed to be playing better than the beginning of the season. But here we are again. A new low point. We second guess Peter Vermes' lineup choice for the Open Cup Semifinal in Sacramento, as well as his choices for PK takers. How does Graham Zusi go 5th? Felipe Hernandez is developing a bit of a reputation. Did yelling at the keeper inspire him to make the winning save? Youthful mistakes were a trend the next game against Austin FC as Cam Duke was sent off with an embarrassing second yellow card and Jonathan Pulskamp let in an inexcusable goal between his legs. Will we find anything to cheer about the rest of the season? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
An injury to Graham Zusi provided youngster Kayden Pierre with a massive opportunity. He joined the Sporting KC academy in 2018 and seen plenty of time with SKCII since, but a lot has changed in the last month or so for the 19-year-old. Pierre has actually been a bright spot at times while his team struggles in last place. He has plenty of growing left to do, but he's ready for the challenge and playing with a ton of confidence. Kayden was laid back and smiling through our whole conversation. We talked about video games. Reminiscing about old classics, and playing FIFA with his teammates today. He tells about the difference in talent level from USL to Major League Soccer. Pierre isn't intimidated by the jump to the top flight. It might be nervy at first with larger crowds, but then he settles into the match. "It's not too crazy. I can do this. My confidence just kicked in." The first assist is in the bag. What's next? What goals does he have for this season? His career? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Two SKC wins in one week? In this economy? Drew and Cody discuss both the (albeit somewhat lucky)away win at Nashville and the 6-0 drubbing of Union Omaha in the Open Cup quarterfinals. Drew professes his love for Felipe Hernandez(again), and we hope that PV agrees with the assessment that the Walter-Hernandez-Duke midfield is the most functional one that SKC has at the moment. We also discuss the new player additions that are now official, and whether Tim Melia might be losing a step. Graham Zusi appears to not age, and DS20 steals souls. That and a bunch more...I mean it's an hour and 45 minutes so buckle up. Music by The Spin Wires
In honor of the current state of Sporting KC, we recorded this show at Strange Days! So this episode is done, in its truest form, with beers in our hands. "My Football Team's Got Me Drinking" The Blue Testament is hosting a Watch Party on June 25th at Strange Days Brewing and all of you are invited! After the match against the Seattle Sounders, we'll record a live postgame show and let some of you give your hot takes on air! SKC lost yet again, this time at the hands of the New England Revolution. It was a rag tag lineup filled with replacements and hopeful experiments, albeit out of necessity. Peter Vermes is still dealing with a multitude of injuries and international duty. But we are fed up with the performances from this team. Graham Zusi returned from injury and made one play that has the guys AMPED up. Uri Rosell is not good enough. And he plays a dangerous game with his jersey roll-ups. We remember (again) how bad Jose Mauri screwed things up for SKC. Cody declares this the focus of all his rage this season. Are reinforcements on the way? Taylor Twellman teased two new forward signings that will arrive in July when the transfer window opens. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Sporting KC earned a 2-2 draw against the always tough FC Dallas over the weekend after goals from Johnny Russell & Daniel Salloi. Are things starting to trend in the right direction for SKC? With the recent news of Gadi Kinda's season ending surgery and the closing of the transfer window, Peter Vermes will have to make due with his current roster. However, this last match gave us signs of hope. Cody & Thad recently spoke with Salloi about his expertise in getting fouled, compared to his teammate Khiry Shelton. This skill paid off with Daniel earning a questionable penalty kick which led to the opening goal vs Dallas. Pen or no pen.. what say you? Nikola Vujnovic hasn't featured in the last two matches, and he's only seen the pitch for a few minutes in his last several appearances. He's a different player than Shelton, and Peter Vermes doesn't like to disrupt the flow of a match. Or is he perhaps in the dog house? Kortne Ford turned in another solid performance. We analyze the entire backline, including Cam Duke who replaced Graham Zusi in the first half. Johnny Russell makes peace with the Fountain City Ultras. Learn more about your ad choices. Allow us to talk you off the ledge, Sporting KC fans. Alan Pulido is "likely" out for the season, Gadi Kinda is out to start the year, but it's not all bad! Rumors are flying of new signings for Peter Vermes' squad, including the return of Graham Zusi. Two new players are arriving via the MLS Superdraft. The ridiculous 2020 season has come to an end for Sporting Kansas City. But the SOB crew is here to help you work through those confusing feelings during this troubling time. There are plenty of positives we can choose to focus on and be hopeful for seasons to come. Women's soccer is returning to KC! A show of their own is coming soon, but we briefly discuss the good news for the local soccer community. The loss to Minnesota United FC became almost painful to watch. So we won't dwell on it, but there are points to discuss. The absence of Alan Pulido is on the minds of most SKC fans, the header from Roberto Puncec may have actually crossed the line but went mostly unchallenged, and Kansas City was undoubtedly missing the veteran experience of Matt Besler and Graham Zusi. Peter Vermes and Co. need to make decisions on 15 players. Most of those decisions have already been made, but we won't hear official word just yet. That is a big number, but many fans would like to see turnover anyway. We look around at some of the options and players out of contract and decide who is on the chopping block. Tough choices must be made. Who do you get rid of? Are you sticking with Daniel Salloi? Is it really time to move on from Matt Besler? Is Gerso worth his large salary? Stay tuned as more podcasts are coming on this subject. News should not be too far away. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
For far too long, matches like Sporting Kansas City's win over the Rapids would have ended differently. They would dominate opponents while the breakthrough goal would either take too long, or never come at all. But then the club spent $10 million on a lethal striker named Alan Pulido. And all of a sudden the team got way better. It's almost like they are TEN MILLION DOLLARS better! We saw goals from four different players in an all-around great performance last night vs the Colorado Rapids. Andreu Fontas came in clutch as a late replacement and not only helped secure the shutout, but got rewarded with a goal of his own. Gerso Fernandes reminded everyone what the #GerShow really is with an absolutely top class goal - and celebration to follow. With the season ending surgery for Graham Zusi, there is really only one option left at right back. Jaylin Lindsey has been somewhat inconsistent this season, but looked very strong last night. If he continues to play like that with the rest of the back line, Sporting will be a contender for MLS Cup. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Daniel Sperry joins Cody & Thad to be very mature and professional about Sporting Kansas City's last two incredibly frustrating matches. Now is not the time to focus on poor referring, bad luck, and Graham Zusi's season ending surgery. Nor how it felt like getting punched in the face. Nor where SKC could be in the Western Conference standings right now. We would never. In stead, we look ahead to the Colorado Rapids match at 7:30pm on Saturday night at Children's Mercy Park. Alan Pulido is back which means someone has to be the odd man out. Can you keep Gianluca Busio out of the lineup? Where does he play? Is Roger Espinoza best used off the bench.. or perhaps as an outside back? Gerso Fernandes has been creating chances like crazy. And don't forget about Khiry Shelton! Who do you sit? In this episode I discuss the following: The Chiefs ran all over the Buffalo Bills and now head to Denver. The Baltimore Ravens are doing all they can to trade and sign players to try to beat the Chiefs. The Sunflower Showdown is Saturday and K-State is a big favorite. Does Kansas have a chance? Missouri will try to back up their win over LSU with a home game against Kentucky. LSU is self-imposing penalties on its football program. Will basketball be next? We learned more allegations about Gregg Marshall's poor behavior. College basketball is getting closer and we got the matchups for the Big 12 / SEC Challenge. More college programs are being cut and now it has hit home at UMKC. The World Series has started and it looks like it's going to be a good one. Sporting has lost Graham Zusi for the season. The Chicago Blackhawks wrote an honest letter to their fans about a rebuild. The Kansas City Sports Monitor is news and analysis for the thinking fan. It is informative and entertaining without being outrageous. I can be reached by email at bob.sloop@kcsportsmonitor.com or on Twitter at @KCSportsMonitor. Is a centerback finally grabbing hold of the reigns on the backline? Winston Reid has turned in a couple strong performances in a row, including heading home a match winner. We give ourselves a pat on the back for supporting him, of course. Daniel Salloi is still really struggling. Is it possible the situation is worse than we thought? Peter Vermes spoke to the media ahead of Sunday's match against Nashville SC and gave an update on Graham Zusi's injury. Gianluca Bio also joined in as he's now one of the team's star players. Thad asked him his thoughts on his EA Sports FIFA rating. Also the club has announced a trade has been made, but has not shared many details. Learn more about your ad choices. Ask and you shall receive! Aly Trost (now) from 810 Sports Radio joins us for an episode to reunite the original Shades of Blue crew! It strangely doesn't seem like much has changed as the conversations were quite similar to a couple years ago. Who should play winger? Why do they keep dominating games without getting the win? What is Khiry Shelton's best position? Sporting Kansas City has VERY rough stretch coming up with NINE games over a 30 day period. Squad rotation seems like a must, but Peter Vermes. We try to figure out how many games Graham Zusi will play. Nine. It'll be nine. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
After getting a big 1-0 win over Minnesota, Sporting Kansas City are back on top of the Western Conference. But were they really good or was Minnesota United really bad? Several players like Graham Zusi and Johnny Russell redeemed themselves with good performances, youngsters Gianluca Busio & Felipe Hernandez looked sharp, and the Gadi-Gerso combination is going to be fun to watch. The long-awaited, mythical DP Striker Alan Pulido has missed three games in a row. But the only thing we've heard is he suffered a knock and has been day-to-day all of September. COVID has change a few league protocols and if Peter Vermes isn't forced to give away intel on his players, why in the world would he? MLS transfer rumors are flying and SKC have been linked with a couple different players. Will they make a move before the window closes on October 29? Learn more about your ad choices. BACK AT IT AGAIN! MLS regular season is back, Sporting Kansas City is back, and your favorite SOB is back. However, Tuesday's 5-2 loss against the Houston Dynamo in the anticipated return to Children's Mercy Park was a big disappointment. Peter Vermes has been throwing anyone and everyone out there on the back line, and nothing seems to be clicking just yet. Who has been the best centerback? The worst? Is there a best pairing yet? Is Matt Besler going to struggle to find the field this year? There are just so many questions right now, and that is just about centerbacks. We discuss Graham Zusi at length and get an update on Luis Martins. Is there even a backup right back at the moment? Jaylin Lindsey looked pretty bad, but nobody is too worried about him. It's not all bad, though. SKC still sit on top of the Western Conference, I'll have you know. We also look at the other positives the team has going right now. Learn more about your ad choices. Kling catches up with three of the vets, Matt Besler, Graham Zusi and Roger Espinoza after a hot start to the season
The trio talks about Sporting Kansas City's first win of 2020 including great showings from Luis Martins, Gadi Kinda, & Alan Pulido. Peter Vermes deployed Khiry Shelton on the right wing, pushing Johnny Russell to the left. While Russell may have been hard to notice at times, it sounds like this was a tactical choice for the specific matchup with the Houston Dynamo. You may see Johnny on the right very soon. Graham Zusi looked horrendous on the goal, but is he really that bad? There were also some interesting tidbits from the training ground ahead of Media Day. Learn more about your ad choices. Graham Zusi is ready for the next season, are you? Last season didn't sit well with the Sporting KC vet and he's working to do something about it.
In this episode, Andrew Wiebe, David Gass, Charlie Davies and Matt Doyle wrap up the MLS All-Star festivities from Orlando, including an epic photobomb, Nani’s buzzer beater in the first-ever MLS Skills Challenge presented by Target, Atletico Madrid’s victory and Joao Felix’s golazo and a meeting between PRO’s Howard Webb and one Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Laughs, we got them. Also in this episode … Week 22 preview with Atlanta United vs. LA Galaxy the big game on the docket, an amazing Bob Bradley impersonation by LAFC’s Walker Zimmerman, what it’s like to play for Matias Almeyda with Chris Wondolowski, Graham Zusi’s career as a Sporting KC (and Wizards) lifer and a ton of listener mail!
Riddled with injuries and inter-state duty, the podcast roster was down to Cody and Thad this week. But the summer of soccer has given us a lot to discuss as of late. The United States Women's National Team are FIFA World Cup Champions for the fourth time and the celebrations have been so much fun to watch! The USMNT were able to make the Gold Cup final against Mexico, but still came up a bit short falling 1-0. And SKC get a much needed win that hopefully marks the beginning of their climb through the ranks of the West. With Megan Rapinoe & Rose Lavelle netting the goals, the US took down the Netherlands to become World Champs yet again. The country, especially Kansas City, were all the way behind them and the party has yet to stop. The girls are enjoying the wave, but how long will this last? Can the NWSL parlay this hype into something more for the sport? The scenes from PnL (somehow) had some wondering if fans were to blame for the demise of FCKC. Thad is a HUGE fan of the women's game and we discuss the failures of their ownership as well as problems with fans. We also spent some time on the USMNT's Gold Cup performance. While the end result may not have been what everyone wanted, there was progress made. We are witnessing a changing of the guard as Weston McKennie, Aaron Long, and Christian Pulisic take charge of the team. But there is still clearly a long way to go - on the field and off. Can Omar Gonzalez really be a part of the team going forward? The same could be asked of Michael Bradley as well. Yohan Croizet has scored in back-to-back matches and Sporting Kansas City moved out of last place in the Western Conference. The Transfer Window has opened and Peter Vermes claims to be looking at 30 players, but Cody & Thad think the most useful reinforcements will come by way of players returning from injury. Aside from Jaylin Lindsey and Rodney Wallace, everyone is training again. Roger Espinoza is on the road back for a huge boost in the midfield, and Erik Hurtado is nearing a return as well. Hurtado should light a fire under the struggling Krisztian Nemeth. There will be some choices to make for the lineup against the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday. We come up with a game-plan for the lineup and substitutions to get a win. The fans are leaning towards Graham Zusi over Nico Hasler, but perhaps more surprising is Croizet leading the way over Nemeth at striker. Learn more about your ad choices. Is the sky falling for the US national team? Short answer ... no. Long answer ... don't look up. After a near catastrophic international break for Bruce Arena and the Americans, Andrew and Matt get together to break it all down. What's up with the stinkers against Costa Rica and Honduras? What can Arena do to right the ship? Why would anyone think missing the World Cup is the answer to the USMNT's current struggles? With that out of the way, the guys tackle Atlanta United's home-heavy slate as Mercedes-Benz Arena prepares for its first MLS match. Can the FIve Stripes get enough points to keep their playoff and MLS Cup dreams alive? If they don't, how big a blow is that to their banner first season? Plus, which non-playoff team is best equipped for 2018? ExtraTime Live driven by Continental: Like our page so you'll never miss a show! After the break, Sporting KC head coach Peter Vermes joins Andrew for a long, all-encompassing interview, including what makes the best defense in MLS so special, the MLS academy arms race, effect of TAM on rosters and scouting, Graham Zusi's career in KC and switch to right back and current plight of the US national team. Would Vermes consider the job? You bet, if he can bear to leave Sporting. Instead of the Hot-Take Hotline, Ike Opara and Tim Melia (Sporting KC) drop by for an off-the-cuff convo about All-Star snubs, fast cars, Vermes' health regimen and kickball games at Chivas USA. Everyone wants to talk about the US national team's big win, but first Ben 'The Research' Baer steps into the starting lineup to drop some knowledge that's downright painful for Minnesota United fans. It may have been a truncated MLS weekend, but there are still plenty of takes (hot, lukewarm and cold) to be had. Are the Loons really in contention to set records for futility or will this trend reverse? Is Pipa Higuain back to his best or was that a beautiful mirage against the Timbers? Is Tyler Adams the next coming? Breathing easier this week? That might just be because the USMNT shook off months of uncertainty and worry after disposing of Honduras 6-0 at Avaya Stadium. As many tweeted at ExtraTime Radio, a hat-trick for Deuce -- and yes, we were watching the game and not just looking at the stats -- and some special moments from Christian Pulisic and Jozy Altidore, among others, got Bruce Arena and the boys back on the track. With Clint Dempsey bearing down on Landon Donovan's goal record, the guys wonder if there's a new all-time USMNT best soon to be crowned. Plus, how much can we really take away from such a lopsided result? The first chance to find out whether the Americans have turned a page comes Tuesday against Panama at Estadio Rommel Fernandez (10 pm ET; beINSPORTS, Follow on the MLS App). David Sakata of Diario Pro joins the guys to explain why Graham Zusi is known as the ghost in Panama, what happened to Los Canaleros in Trinidad and how they'll attempt to grab a huge three points at home against a CONCACAF giant. In the mailbag, the ETR curse is back (and may be Wiebe's fault), the guys debate Atlanta's effect on MLS, Ben wonders if the Red Bulls will stick with the 4-2-2-2 long term and David claims the Tyler Adams hype train for himself.

It is Wednesday, and so that means it is Filibuster day! Jason, Ben, and Adam are back to talk about all things soccer, and we start off with D.C. United's preseason. We discuss the fact that Jalen Robinson has been with the first team more often than Kofi Opare, the return of Steve Birnbaum, whether or not Ian Harkes can grab a starting spot, and the good play of Jose Guillermo Ortiz so far. It being Filibuster, we also have to talk about the fullback situation and whether or not we can have Nick DeLeon play all spots on the field at once. For the second segment we welcome on Cody Bradley from Stars and Stripes FC to talk about the US men's national team's recent friendlies. We talk about whether or not the January camp was success this year, Benny Feilhaber's performance, and the worst thing that came out of the camp. We also glow over Jorge Villanfana, talk about the central midfield, and discuss Darlington Nagbe's return to the USMNT fold. Finally, we ask whether or not Graham Zusi is the answer at right back, the point of not using Jozy Altidore in the second game, the starters, and the keepers. In the last segment, we crack open the Twitterbox and answer your questions, including about Settlers of Catan and Chris Durkin, plus much, much more. Give it a listen!

Canada Day and the Fourth of July brought fireworks, and Andrew and David bring Calen Carr in to help them understand what they saw during four straight days of MLS action. New York is blue, there’s no doubt about that. But is Jack Harrison the next big thing? David is convinced. Graham Zusi is reinvigorated, and that’s a good thing for Sporting KC. Steven Gerrard and Robbie Keane look like they’ve been playing together for years, and that’s a bad thing for every team that isn’t the Galaxy. Plus, Tim Howard nabs his first shutout, Orlando City SC fall apart defensively and Jordan Morris scores a banger that even Jurgen Klinsmann felt compelled to praise. In the second segment, Bobby Warshaw gives the inside scoop on what life’s like in USL. The road trips, the level of play, where it fits into the youth development scheme, the stadiums and fans that fill them and where it fits among the world’s lower divisions. Trust us, you’ll learn something. Finally, as the transfer window opens, the guys try to decide who the biggest player loss has been so far this season. Oba? Nemeth? How about Matt Miazga or Jermaine Jones? Then they see what MLS could borrow from Iceland, and Calen takes self promotion to a whole new level.
Harrison and Sean return to conquer your hearts with a thrilling rendition of why they dislike Graham Zusi versus the alternatives of an unproven, yet exciting creative talent and then a 17-year old fresh off his prom (NEVER ACTUALLY MENTIONED IN THE PODCAST, FAIL!) with Sean bringing some fresh numbers and perspective.Talk continues around Argentina, their ELO, ELO in general and then Harrison provides a pretty simplistic bottom line of what the US defenders need to do to prevent goals (besides get lucky). The duo bestow some thoughts concerning the NYCFC attack, Mike Grella, compare the sunk cost fallacy to Lucas Melano and then discuss what Portland would do if they had to replace Adi... (actually there is no answer, it would just suck a lot).Lastly, they discuss a bit of the Amway Canadian Championship final, first leg and discuss Michael Bradley in a thrilling return of the superlative game.Visit americansocceranalysis.com for more analytically based content.
