For the Glory KC is back with the 120th episode of the show!Sporting Kansas City played their first two competitive games of 2025. While we warned you not to overreact to the initial results, it hasn't stopped a slice of the fanbase from getting quite worked up. We work our way through both the freezing cold of the Inter Miami game and the slightly less cold, but rainy Austin FC game to talk takeaways.Daniel Salloi caught a fair amount of grief for his performance in both games. But there was a lot of other notable things that happened. There were Sporting KC debuts for Dejan Joveljic, Manu Garcia, Shapi Suleymanov and Jacob Bartlett. 19-year-old Bartlett started both games! We give our opinions on their performances and those of their peers.Plus, a look at the injury report, a few tactical wrinkles, and a breakdown of the Austin goal before getting to some breaking news from the week. Sporting KC cut Alenis Vargas and signed Andrew Brody. Erik Thommy was named captain and Roger Espinoza got hired to SKC's coaching staff. And a little roster composition news came out as well. Finally, the KC Current had another relatively quiet week, but they extended the contract of new signing Haley Hopkins who just arrived via trade. They also had a few national team call-ups and some new NWSL rules came out, including a bump in the salary cap from $2.75 million to $3.5m.In the Digital Crawl, we touch on a few more topics, including: A ref asking for Messi's jersey USWNT results Benny Feilhaber's new job KC Comets just keep winning and a Tony Meola updateHere is a rundown of topics (and approximate start times): Sporting KC freeze against Inter Miami - 8:11 SKC vs. Austin FC in the Season Opener - 26:48 Captain Erik Thommy - 48:32 Alenis Vargas released - 52:01 Andrew Brody signed - 57:18 Sporting KC story round-up - 1:00:27 Sheena does Manu Garcia bio - 1:07:30 KC Current news - 1:14:46 Digitial Crawl - 1:18:28Upcoming Games Sporting KC @ Inter Miami - Tuesday, Feb. 25th - 7:00 PM CST Sporting KC vs. San Jose Earthquakes - Sat., Mar. 1st - 7:30 PM SheBelieves Cup USWNT vs. Japan - Wed. For the Glory KC is back with the 118th episode of the show!Sporting Kansas City had a very busy week with two more preseason games under their belts. Before that theylocked down the signings of Designated Player Manu Garcia and Russian winger Shapi Suleymanov. Sheena and I discuss where they fit into the team and if it makes us more confident going into CONCACAF Champions Cup and the 2025 MLS season. After the second preseason game againstMinnesota United, theKC Soccer Journal asked Peter Vermes where he still wants to add to the roster."Honestly, all over the place," started Vermes. "As I've told you guys before, we're in an area of trying to rebuild this team. I would say that there is no position, nothing that is off limits. We're going to continue to add players and move this team around."If you missed the preseason action, the games are available to stream in their entirety on YouTube. TheNYCFC game ended in a0-0 draw in a game mostly played by the starters. And the backups faced starters in arough 6-0 loss against MNUFC. We give our thoughts on what the results mean (not much), who played where (a little more), injury updates and the general state of the team heading towards the final preseason game.Beyond the action in the games, there were a bunch of random Sporting KC tidbits that came out this week.Roger Espinoza was spotted coaching players in both preseason games. Tim Melia, Johnny Russell and Andreu Fontasall showed up to the Super Bowl. MLS also released a ton of new roster rules, expertly explained bySixOneFiveSoccer.com's Chris Ivey in thethread on BlueSky.Part of that layout of rules confirmed that Sporting KC, along with all the other MLS teams, cannot receive General Allocation Money (GAM) for the sale of a DP. That means Alan Pulido won't be adding any GAM to SKC's roster, but at least they got off that terrible salary and added Dejan Joveljic in his place. Speaking of Pulido, after missing a few games injured for Chivas, he playedand scored in his second appearance. We also talk about how young this team has become, a few more Peter Vermes quotes, how likely Messi is to play on February 18th at Children's Mercy Park and answer a really good listener question about developing and selling players. It's not until the Digital Crawl, but SKC II announced the preseason roster and KCSJ's Mike Kuhn gave aquick breakdown of those players, including a few familiar names. Finally, theKC Current had a relatively quiet week, but they did announce two closed door preseason games. First, they'll playRacing Louisville on February 23rd and theChicago Red Stars on March 2nd.In the Digital Crawl, we touch on a few more topics, including:SKC II's US Open Cup announcement against the Des Moines MenaceJack Kortkamp got called up to the US U-17sAnd a ton of big MLS moves, including Cucho Hernandez leaving and Atlanta swinging bigHere is a rundown of topics (and approximate start times):More Sporting KC Signings - 8:00Two Preseason games for SKC - 18:24Random SKC Stories - 36:39How should Sporting KC handle youth development/sales - 52:49KC Current News - 1:00:53Digital Crawl - 1:12:10 As a special gift to For the Glory KC listeners and KC Soccer Journal readers, Backheeled dot com is giving away 30 days of their amazing, independent American soccer coverage for free. S3E26 - For the Glory KC is back with the 91st episode of the show! Sporting Kansas City got themselves back in the win column this week for just the fourth time this season. On Saturday night, they shut out Austin FC 2-0, just their second shutout in 21 tries this season. The victory was picked up by quality finishing and even better defense. It also feels like someone over at Sporting KC in the technical staff may be listening to the podcast. Last week, we put out a loose plan for going forward in 2024. Stop playing guys that'll be gone after the year, unless you are trying to see if you need to bring them back. It wasn't perfect, as Andreu Fontas found the bench, but Johnny Russell and Tim Melia still started. Russell played lights out and Melia had very little to do since Austin only mustered two shots. SKC also played the midfield trio of Nemanja Radoja, Erik Thommy and Jake Davis, a group I've personally been clamoring to see together more. Davis did well to make up that ground coverage that Remi Walter supplies and a touch of physicality in the midfield this team doesn't have outside of Memo Rodriguez. The game also saw the return of Alan Pulido and Tim Leibold from injury, with Leibold scoring the game winner. Walter, Daniel Salloi and Robert Castellanos were all listed as questionable, but they all sat out the game. Speaking of physicality, it reminds us immediately of the retirement of Roger Espinoza. He was honored before the game and spoke to the media at halftime and a little in the locker room. The conversation wouldn't be complete without all the front office movement from the week. Brian Bliss is out, and Mike Burns is in, though not in exactly the same job. We'll have a better understanding of Burns' role after the Tuesday press conference as Peter Vermes asked we avoid asking about Burns in the post-game presser. Sheena and I give our initial impressions on the hiring and firing, knowing more information is coming down the line. The Kansas City Current continue to set records and hold back the opposition. In the past week they went to the Portland Thorns and won 4-1 and then returned home for a 2-0 win over the Houston Dash. We share our thoughts on those games, Temwa Chawinga, the river 'goal' and so much more. In the Digital Crawl, we hit a few other topics, including: Two NWSL coaching firings, both with KC ties A Memo Rodriguez transfer rumor The USMNT's up and down week at Copa America USWNT Olympic Roster is out and Kamron Habibullah is midseason MLS Next Pro MVP Here is a rundown of topics (and approximate start times): Sporting KC win! - 6:44 SKC do some hiring and firing in the front office - 45:58 KC Current win twice! - 1:14:15 Digital Crawl - 1:31:18 Upcoming Schedule: SKC II vs. Austin FC II - Sunday, June 30th @ 6:00 PM CDT USMNT vs. Uruguay - Monday, July 1st @ 8:00 PM Sporting KC at Colorado Rapids - Thursday, July 4th @ 8:30 PM KC Current vs. Orlando Pride - Saturday, July 6th @ 6:30 PM Sporting KC vs. FC Dallas - Sunday, July 7th @ 7:30 PM SKC II at Tacoma Defiance - Sunday, July 7th @ 9:00 PM We recently turned on "Listener Support." S3E13 - For the Glory KC is back with the 78th episode of the show! This week, we have a very special episode with not one, not two, but three hosts! I'm joined by some familiar names to those of you that read the KC Soccer Journal. Juan Cisneros and Xander Kennedy make their For the Glory KC debuts! Don't worry, Sheena will be back, but we just closed out an eight-day road trip with a seven-and-a-half-hour drive and only one of us was a soccer sicko enough to immediately make a podcast. We start the show with some Sporting Kansas City love as they picked up a huge three points on the road against Toronto FC. Sporting KC managed to pull off the win without the injured Alan Pulido (not to mention Johnny Russell and Andreu Fontas). It begs the question, is that a good or bad thing? Xander, Juan and I break down the lack of production from the forward line, but the goals still coming in elsewhere. We also get into the bangers scored by Remi Walter and Jake Davis, as well as the highly repeatable Alenis Vargas goal if Peter Vermes sticks with trusting his young and pacey backups. Plus, we can't avoid the goal at the death from Toronto, which was apparently over a half of a foot offside. In addition to all the goals scored, we dash around to various other topics including Memo Rodriguez stepping up his game, Sporting KC's propensity to shoot from distance, the return of Felipe Hernandez, Robert Voloder continuing to start and the return of the refs as PRO and the PSRA reached a new CBA. Before we fully move off of Sporting KC, we have to talk about Roger Espinoza returning for at least one game and it won't be too far from Kansas City. He will be joining the Des Moines Menace this Wednesday in the US Open Cup as they take on Union Omaha (in Nebraska). Which begs the question, who else should join Des Moines (or any other team) to try to make a cup run? The KC Current continued their strong form as well as they climbed to the top of the table off their third straight win. There were goals scored by Vanessa DiBernardo, Alexa Spaanstra, Temwa Chawinga and Bia, but it feels like they could have scored so many more. We also get into the level of their competition through the first three weeks and of course, the set piece defending. Plus, does the NWSL have a VAR problem? We've got some thoughts! In the Digital Crawl, we touch on the following topics: Kei Kamara to LAFC International call-ups for the KC Current International club soccer coming to CPKC Stadium USMNT over Mexico in the Nations League And the Messi/Arrowhead update Here is a rundown of topics (and approximate start times): Meet the Guest Hosts - 1:38 Sporting KC win on the road! - 4:47 Are these SKC goals sustainable? - 15:59 Repeatable goals, Sporting KC youth and Toronto's offside goal - 23:00 Roger Espinoza and the Des Moines Menace - 43:42 KC Current win at home (again)! - 55:27 Digital Crawl - 1:16:15 Upcoming Schedule: The KC Current have TWO weeks off Inter Miami vs. CF Monterrey (CCC) - Wednesday, April 3rd at 7:00 PM CST Des Moines Menace @ Union Omaha (US Open) - Wednesday, April 3rd at 7:30 PM USWNT vs Japan - Saturday, April 6th at 11:30 AM Sporting KC vs. Portland Timbers - Sunday, April 7th at 12:30 PM Spotify took away our ads, so we turned on "Listener Support." S2E55 - For the Glory KC is back with the 62nd episode of the show! On this week's episode, Sporting Kansas City made a series of massive roster decisions likely ending the KC soccer careers of Roger Espinoza and Graham Zusi. Sheena and I commiserate, remember fond times and get some of the feels out about their departure. On top of that, we talk about if the moves make sense and how we wanted to see their careers end. Plus, could they end up on other clubs? There is a lot of Roger and Zusi talk to kick off the pod. Then we move to the other moves on the roster. From Kortne Ford and the center back situation to our child's proclamation that she has disowned the team over Cam Duke's departure. We can't skip Sheena's favorite player Remi Walter, or the news Johnny Russell is coming back and what that means for roster spend and flexibility. There is still a fair amount to discuss around the rest of the roster including Gadi Kinda, Kendall McIntosh, Stephen Afrifa, Willy Agada and more. Beyond that, Peter Vermes has already come out and said the team needs a backup goalkeeper, left back for the injured Ndenbe, another CB (they already have five), midfielders plural and help in the attack. With 24 roster spots filled and only six available, that's six players right there. We give an early preview of what else we think this team needs to do this offseason. Additionally, PV addresses the talk of a fourth Designated Player and changes to the current DP rules and we weigh in on that. Then we speed through the handball that PRO got wrong, and the Sporting KC II roster moves. Finally, we get to the Digital Crawl. Sporting KC were unceremoniously eliminated from the MLS Cup playoffs Sunday night in Houston. The team maintained their 4-4-2 mid block/low-pressure setup meant to create counterattacking opportunities that worked so well against St Louis, but it was ineffective against Houston. We discuss the tactical plan, whether it was the most appropriate choice, and the struggles the team had in getting quality goal scoring chances from the transition events they created. There was of course a dubious non-call that blanketed much of the conversation of this game, so we give it the appropriate coverage, while also considering the mistakes outside the referees and how, while unlucky, it shouldn't be the primary focus of fans' ire. Graham Zusi and Roger Espinoza may have played their last minutes for Sporting KC, we discuss their impact at the club, and how the club still struggles to replace their influence. We will know Friday if one or both are sticking around, along with a number of other players. Next week will include a much deeper dive into roster construction going into 2024. Alan Pulido has a return to form with two assists. Gadi Kinda balled out. And Peter Vermes reads the KC Soccer Journal, clearly, as he rolls out our tactical plan to great success. Khiry's back. An aging lineup. Tons of questions about the backline. Sporting KC opens the MLS season with a shutout loss. It's time to panic, right? Relying too much on Graham Zusi, Roger Espinoza, and Ben Sweat is not something anybody wants to see this season. Khiry Shelton on the right wing was another one sure to have fans groaning. As new & returning players get to full fitness, what would you do with the Starting XI? We look at all options, including Marinos Tzionis, who turned in a solid shift off the bench. Many questions were answered... just not the way we wanted. Robert Voloder showed he still has kinks to work out. Ben Sweat is still Ben Sweat. A bright spot was Remi Walter. He was deployed in the holding midfield role and was probably the best player on the field for SKC. Erik Thommy, rocking the Captain's arm band, looked like he is ready to show us a new level to his game after an impressive first season. Is 1-0 away at Portland cause to panic? Reinforcements are coming and this lineup isn't exactly what we can expect all season. Next up is the Colorado Rapids, who will be missing the absolute pest of Diego Rubio. We had a strange week around here at The Blue Testament. Vox Media announced that MLS sites will no longer be "supported" by SB Nation. We don't have much info to offer an update at the moment, but we really appreciate all the support that has come our way and we want everyone to know this won't stop us! Thanks again for all the love this past week. We'll keep you updated on the next steps. Sporting KC made a very MLS trade involving fake money (GAM) and a chair on the bench (international roster spot). How many green cards are we up to these days? Roger Espinoza joins us from Arizona to give an update on preseason action. He's back again at age 36, but says his body is feeling good. Although he doesn't expect to replicate what Tom Brady is doing. The midfield will look quite different from last season with new faces like Radoja & Flores, and the return of Gadi Kinda. How exactly does Espinoza fit into the mix? During the scrimmage with the Portland Timbers last weekend, Roger & Diego Chara reminisced about their long careers of running into people. We talked about dipping his toes into coaching, high expectations for his wife Lo'eau LaBonta & the KC Current this year, Cristiano Ronaldo, and much more. It's always a good time hanging out with the future Sporting Legend. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The vets are back. Graham Zusi, Roger Espinoza, and Andreu Fontas will all three be returning for Sporting KC in 2023. It's safe to assume each of them is returning for less money. Fontas looks like the starter for next year, but what about Espinoza and Zusi? There are other healthy bodies in the midfield at the moment, but Roger always seems to find his way back into the starting lineup. How much will Kayden Pierre push Zusi for the starting job at right back? A few individual moments of lapses in judgment did in the Americans against The Netherlands in the Round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup. The young team was tired after expending everything to reach the main goal of surviving the group stage, and were beaten by a superior opponent. But Louis Van Gaal also got the best of Gregg Berhalter. Berhalter is a curious case and a hot-button issue among US Soccer fans. There's many reasons to disagree and dislike some of his decisions. But in this World Cup cycle the Yanks won a couple tournaments, qualified for the World Cup, and then advanced out of the group stage. Gregg did his job. What he failed to do was reach another level for the USMNT. The foundation has been laid, but it's time for a new voice. Is the sports washing working for Qatar right now, or has it brought issues into international view? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Yes, he's been around for a long time. He's one of the most popular players on the roster because he always gives every ounce of effort. What you may not know is that Espinoza also has a great sense of humor, which he displays in today's interview.

It's Shades of Blue AFTER DARK! We recorded in the wee hours of the morning, fresh off a thrilling 4-2 extra time win for Sporting KC over FC Dallas in the US Open Cup. And to think... you almost forgot how much fun it is to watch SKC! The Starting XI turned some heads and one player's name was literally hand-written on the official scoresheet. Several youngsters were given their shot to make an impact. Who did? Kayden Pierre had a big opportunity to slide into the regular first team lineup. Jake Davis wasted zero time in proving he's a young Roger Espinoza by immediately getting a yellow card. Peter Vermes admitted the miserable 2-0 deficit at the half was his fault. Even though Ben Sweat straight up forgot he was playing soccer at one point. But whatever he did at halftime - it worked. This game had everything. Including a Khiry Shelton brace (kind of). Power Rankings for the best calves on the team. The two newcomers scored their first goals for Sporting. Vujnovic redeemed an otherwise quiet performance with the first goal. While Tzionis was a bright spot all night before he took the roof off the house with a 98th minute equalizer, the latest regulation time goal in club history. We take you behind the scenes of a Sporting KC press conference. Does the team hate Chad? Cody gets grilled on his knowledge (or lack thereof ) of the Kansas City Current and Sporting KC II. He's a 35-year-old with a mountain of experience, but playing in the holding midfield role is still pretty new to Roger Espinoza. He wasn't caught off guard by having to play the 6 recently, because if you aren't versatile and ready for anything, you likely won't be on Peter Vermes' field anyway. He says he wished he had done better, but now he can use that "ammunition" to help turn things around for Sporting KC. Roger is a clear leader in the clubhouse, often mentoring and being tough on younger players. What would he say to his younger self with the long hair and full Roger-face? He recently married Lo'eau LaBonta of the Kansas City Current. She was once told by a coach to watch SKC and emulate a certain Honduran player. In Los Angeles, it's not the leaves changing color, or a crispness in the air, or even the smell of pumpkin spice in every Starbucks and Trader Joe's that signal the coming of fall in 2021. This year, it's the sound of the 3252 roaring as our own Defender of the Banc, Mamadou Fall, scores a brace at the Banc to give LAFC its biggest win of 2021! It's Episode 165, the first of the post-Diego Rossi era, and it's Fall! The first 17 minutes-plus gave no indication of the season change that was coming. SKC dominated long stretches of the early part of the match, but LAFC's defense played well. In the 18th minute, LAFC earns a corner, taken by Eduard Atuesta. A perfect corner finds Mamadou Fall, the 18-year old Senegalese defender who has been a beacon of light on the rough seas of the 2021 season. Rising above the defense, Fall heads it cleanly into the back of the net to give LAFC a bit of a shock lead, 1-0. LAFC would hold serve through the first half and head to the locker room up a goal. In the second half, Red Card Roger reared his head once again, as Roger Espinoza is shown red for an unintentional-but-awful looking on Chicho Arango, and SKC was shook. Latif earns LAFC a free kick at the hour mark, and the pair of Atuesta and Fall were back at it! Off the set piece, Mamadou gets on the end of another perfect ball, heading it across goal for a brace and a two-goal lead for LAFC! 10 minutes later, Duke, Moose, and Chicho link up for LAFC's third, and it looked like the lead was finally safe from our 80th minute curse. Just to be sure, Eduard Atuesta buried a Musovski-earned PK in the 85th minute to put the Black and Gold up 4, and the party was on at the Banc! Also on this episode, Jordan Harvey gets some burn, Filly rants about the haters, and Scarf remembers Tommy Mark on the 3rd anniversary of his sudden passing. Of course, there's This Day In LAFC History, a rundown of our boys on international duty, and a short prayer to prevent injuries during kickball. FC Barcelona have joined Bayern Munich, among other clubs, with interest in youngster Gianluca Busio. What league around the world best suits the 18-year-old? How much money is he actually worth? Is it possible he leaves for free like Erik Palmer-Brown? So many questions. Sporting KC declined the option of their #10 Felipe Gutierrez, but he isn't gone just yet. The two sides are renegotiating the contract and we discuss the likelihood the Chilean will return for the 2021 season. Peter Vermes has added another piece to his midfield ahead of the 2020 season with the arrival of Gadi Kinda. In this episode Cody, Robert, and Thad cover all your questions about the 25-year-old out of Beitar Jerusalem. As it often goes, there has been some confusion around the terms of the deal. Is Kinda here on loan or is it just a straight transfer? His agent and former coach have referred to the deal as a transfer, while Sporting Kansas City says it is a loan. We also talk about the money and whether he is a Designated Player or not. But how important are those labels anymore anyway? Vermes sees Kinda as a box-to-box, #8 midfielder who possesses the strict defensive standards he requires from his players, while being dangerous going forward as well. So where will he play? Will he fight Roger Espinoza for playing time? Robert wonders what this means for the plethora of young talent with SKC and if it will be another year where the likes of Felipe Hernandez & Gianluca Busio aren't able to get enough first team minutes. The move gives Vermes options on all lines now. They can be adaptable as is required by the league now. We look at different ways Kinda can be used and who he might play with. The question that will always be asked.... is he worth the money? The league has changed and what it takes to get a younger player with potential costs a pretty penny. SKCII have also added a key piece. Kaveh Rad featured heavily last year and now the 18-year-old academy kid got a professional contract. The podcast is back after a buy week to discuss Sporting Kansas City's loss to FC Dallas, players returning from injury, and give a preview of Friday's match in NYC. There was something in the stadium on July 20th that prevent anyone from making a shot on target. Everyone except Dallas, that is. We discuss Saturday's Media Game and how Cody wasn't the only one who couldn't manage a shot on target. SKC took 18 shots on the day and it wasn't until later in the 2nd half they managed to get two of them on goal. Coming off two straight wins it was a gut punch to lose this one at home. But the return of Roger Espinoza was a breath of fresh air and something this team was missing desperately for too long.  We have seen the light at the end of the tunnel for this stretch of injuries and everyone is back training except for Jaylin Lindsey and Rodney Wallace. Roger is a big one but while we still have the famous question of "Who is the striker" right now, Erik Hurtado will be welcomed back with open arms. We have a lineup discussion at all parts of the field. Does Yohan Croizet or Krisztian Nemeth get the nod up top? Who do you play in the absence of Felipe Gutierrez (yellow card accumulation)? Benny Feilhaber or Gianluca Busio? Does Vermes change the back line after a shaky performance last week? New York City FC has historically (heh) been defined by big stars, but they are finding success this season without a household name. They know how to play on their small field, but unleashing crazy people like Espinoza and Croizet in a small area might be really fun to watch. As always, you'll find a lot of positivity and optimism as we look ahead to this match.  ...Especially without Thad on the pod this week.  Learn more about your ad choices. Riddled with injuries and inter-state duty, the podcast roster was down to Cody and Thad this week. But the summer of soccer has given us a lot to discuss as of late. The United States Women's National Team are FIFA World Cup Champions for the fourth time and the celebrations have been so much fun to watch! The USMNT were able to make the Gold Cup final against Mexico, but still came up a bit short falling 1-0. And SKC get a much needed win that hopefully marks the beginning of their climb through the ranks of the West. With Megan Rapinoe & Rose Lavelle netting the goals, the US took down the Netherlands to become World Champs yet again. The country, especially Kansas City, were all the way behind them and the party has yet to stop. The girls are enjoying the wave, but how long will this last? Can the NWSL parlay this hype into something more for the sport? The scenes from PnL (somehow) had some wondering if fans were to blame for the demise of FCKC. Thad is a HUGE fan of the women's game and we discuss the failures of their ownership as well as problems with fans. We also spent some time on the USMNT's Gold Cup performance. While the end result may not have been what everyone wanted, there was progress made. We are witnessing a changing of the guard as Weston McKennie, Aaron Long, and Christian Pulisic take charge of the team. But there is still clearly a long way to go - on the field and off. Can Omar Gonzalez really be a part of the team going forward? The same could be asked of Michael Bradley as well.  Yohan Croizet has scored in back-to-back matches and Sporting Kansas City moved out of last place in the Western Conference. The Transfer Window has opened and Peter Vermes claims to be looking at 30 players, but Cody & Thad think the most useful reinforcements will come by way of players returning from injury. Aside from Jaylin Lindsey and Rodney Wallace, everyone is training again. Roger Espinoza is on the road back for a huge boost in the midfield, and Erik Hurtado is nearing a return as well. Hurtado should light a fire under the struggling Krisztian Nemeth. There will be some choices to make for the lineup against the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday. We come up with a game-plan for the lineup and substitutions to get a win. The fans are leaning towards Graham Zusi over Nico Hasler, but perhaps more surprising is Croizet leading the way over Nemeth at striker. Learn more about your ad choices. Sporting Kansas City took a week off and the podcast decided to use that time to recover as well. Cody, Aly, Robert, and Thad were back in the studio to cover a very busy summer of soccer. The Women's World Cup is in full swing and the USWNT caused a stir with their celebrations in a 13-0 win. The United States Men's National Team kicks off the Gold Cup after struggling heavily as of late. Plus, Sporting Kansas City will try to pull themselves out of a slump against the Columbus Crew this weekend. Aly and Thad have some strong opinions on Megan Rapinoe's (perhaps) excessive celebration. This is the World Cup, not little league. But where do you stand? Was this a close-knit team having fun - or was it rubbing it in the face of a team that didn't stand a chance? The USMNT has been quite the dumpster fire and they haven't inspired a ton of confidence heading into the Concacaf Gold Cup that they kicked off on Wednesday night. The team has gotten away from what so many fans took pride in - grit. What is the minimum this team needs to show in this tournament? The lineup for Sporting Kansas City is slowing starting to look better. Despite still missing likes of Roger Espinoza, Peter Vermes has a lot more firepower to work with. We ask the question, "Can things get any worse?" Players are returning and it feels like brighter days are ahead, but things must improve quickly. Learn more about your ad choices. GOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllllllllllllllll!   Episode 85 of the podcast takes us onto the soccer pitch for the very first time. Roger Espinoza of Sporting Kansas City sits down to share his version of the American Dream. Originally from Honduras, Espinoza shares a truly amazing story of coming to the United States, playing at the highest levels, and living out his dreams.   Tim and Roger talk about how Roger moved to Colorado from Honduras when he was 12 years old. Their conversation takes them through Roger's dad coming to America, waiting over a decade to be able to bring his family along, and how playing soccer and living in America created special opportunities for Roger.   “I am not that fast, I am not that skillful… I'm gonna to stick to who I am.”   Espinoza's career has taken a few of those special, almost unbelievable, Moonlight-esque twists. After moving to Denver and graduating from high school, Espinoza went to Yavapai College in Arizona. After two successful years there, he played one year of semi-pro and then went to Ohio State University. Espinoza set the Big Ten on fire and warned several homies, including being named All Big Ten. He left Ohio State after one year and was drafted by Sporting KC in 2008. Espinoza also played for Wigan Athletics in the English Premier League, which is considered the best soccer league in the world. Among his career highlights, Espinoza shares some of his favorite memories as a member of the Honduras national team in 2010 and 2014.   This week's interview walks through Espinoza's life and career in the Big Ten, the Premier League, and the World Cup as well as his views on American football and other sports. Though this is our first soccer interview, Moonlighters will identify with Roger Espinoza's passion for competition and stories from the highest levels of sports.

A feud is brewing in the @SportingKC locker room and #TheShowKC is right in the middle of it! On yesterday's Show, midfielder Roger Espinoza, when asked to name the dirtiest person in the locker room, threw down @IkeOpara's name. This didn't sit well with Opara, a Man of the People as his teammates call him. In the interest of fairness and equal time, The Show extended an offer to Opara to come on today and refute Roger's claims, which he does vociferously -- in addition to throwing Erik Palmer-Brown under the bus. Where does this end? The saga continues...catch Roger, Ike, Erik and the rest of Sporting KC at the home opener tomorrow night!

The first midweek action of the year meant less sleep but more MLS, and that’s just fine. Things aren’t “fine” for last year’s powers, however. The table is upside down, at least compared to 2015, and Andrew, Matt, and David break down the surprising Wednesdaynight results then look ahead to the weekend. With Colorado riding high, how will the upcoming addition of Jermaine Jones affect their playoff chances? Will he be more impactful than Didier Drogba, who could come back this weekend for Montreal? The guys also talk SkyCam in KC, the wonderful life of Chris Wondolowski and the imminent departure time of the Tommy Thompson hype train.   In the second segment, Sporting KC's midfield duo of Roger Espinoza and Jordi Quintilla stop by the studio on the heels of a Justin Bieber concert. They discuss their respective paths to KC, the players and teams they hate playing against and best tactics for pushing through a postgame jersey trade.   It’s time to go off topic in the mailbag. First, the guys ponder which MLS player should host a podcast, help a lonely MLS fan pick the best match to attend and make some bold Copa America Centenario predictions.

Who won and who lost the MLS offseason? Did your team’s moves come out on top or has your club just not done enough. One of the top pickups of the offseason isn’t an MLS newbies, it is league veteran Roger Espinoza. He stops by to discuss his return to Kansas City, wedding gifts for Dom Dwyer, and his time in England.   In the second segment the guys jump into their time machine as they begin to worry about how the 2022 winter World Cup will affect the MLS season. What would you do to fit the season in? And is a 48-team World Cup in two different countries in the cards?    In the mailbag we get a chance to hear who goes on your US Soccer “Mount Rushmore” or if there should even be one. Plus the guys dole out advice to their friend on who he should bring with him to the USA-Mexico friendly. And to close out Simon gets your mouth drooling with his favorite Maltese delicacies (hint: Bugs Bunny won’t be a fan.)   Email us at ExtraTime@MLSsoccer.com or tweet us at @ExtraTimeRadio.
