While the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) has emerged as the best women's professional soccer league in the world, it took years to achieve that status, striving first for stability. Early successes, such as the fan support for the Portland Thorns and on-field performance of FC Kansas City, gave the nascent league showcase moments, players and teams. FC Kansas City rostered the likes of Becky Sauerbrunn and Lauren Holliday of US Women's National Team, and combined them with young talents like Erika Tymrak. Meanwhile, players like Leigh Ann Brown had significant professional experience in the then defunct WPS (Women's Professional Soccer), and made FC Kansas an even more formidable force. The team had the league's second-best record in year one, then won back-to-back championships in years two and three. Brown joined Founding Futbol to talk about her journey to the NWSL, how persistence landed her on the FC Kansas City roster, why she ultimately left the game after three successful season in the league, and so much more. The downside was an injury to Claire Lavogez. Daniel and Thad break down who might fill in for Lavogez, or maybe how is a better way to ask the question. Sporting KC is still hot. Unfortunately, they're still eliminated from the post season. But playing spoiler for the Seattle Sounders instantly becomes a highlight of the season. SKC only suffered one loss since July 30th, a heartbreaker in Austin after conceding two very late goals. They would have a very real chance to sneak into the playoffs this weekend against FC Dallas had they held on to all three points that night. That loss clearly stands out as a defining moment this season. What other tough results hurt you the most this season? Peter Vermes seemingly confirmed the departure of Khiry Shelton with his recent comments about getting a third striker. He also mentioned the ability to get another Designated Player. Does this have anything to do with the report on the possibility of a 4th DP spot? The recently released Yates report painted a pretty ugly picture for the NWSL, including sexual misconduct among a slew of other troubling findings. Have teams acted quickly enough in response? The former club, FC Kansas City, is mentioned in the report. The differences between clubs then, and the KC Current now, is astounding. Learn more about your ad choices. Many sports leagues were put on hiatus or delayed in 2020 and that included the NWSL. The women's professional soccer league was the first pro sports league to resume last June with the Challenge Cup where our latest guest Shea Groom put on a show. She tied the Challenge Cup lead for goals with three and was named MVP of the championship match as the Houston Dash secured the title. We talked with Groom about preparing for her second year with Houston, her career in the NWSL including winning a championship with her hometown club FC Kansas City. Plus she discusses her college days at Texas A & M, her experience with Team USA and what goals still lie ahead. We also talk about the mechanics of a header (her speciality), how she knew she could compete at a high level and her affinity for Shea Stadium. #WhatsGood

When a season ends, rosters take shape. So it’s been for the Royals, whose activity has picked up in the last week with the addition of pitcher Mike Minor and the non-tendering of several players, including third-baseman Maikel Franco and outfielder Bubba Starling. Beat writer Lynn Worthy speculates on who will, and won’t, be returning. Shaun Goodwin performs the same exercise for Sporting Kansas City. The club’s season ended with a heartbreaking loss in the MLS playoffs last week, and decisions on next season’s roster are happening now. That includes the future of captain Matt Besler. Will the longtime defender be back with the club next season? Also, Kansas City added to its menu of professional sports team with the return of women’s soccer. FC Kansas City spent five seasons here, winning two championships, before moving to Utah and returning. Story links: Mike Minor felt like he owed the Royals and GM Dayton Moore another try Sporting Kansas City’s season ends with 3-0 loss to Minnesota Women’s professional soccer is returning to Kansas City. In today's episode I interview cat lover, sci-fi fantasy aficionado, 2x World Cup champion, Olympic gold medalist, Becky Sauerbrunn. Y'all, no two ways about it, Becky is a baller. She is one of the most consistent players in the game of soccer. But, one of my favorite things about Becky is how she just straight up does her. She doesn't change who she is to fit in. She speaks her opinion, about sometimes difficult topics, And she stands up for others. She is one of those leaders who leads by example and treats everyone with respect. I think that's why she's admired so much by all of her teammates. Becky was born in St Louis Missouri. She played basketball and volleyball, but always knew soccer was her number one love. Becky played at the University of Virginia, then went to the pro level and currently represents the USWNT. She has played professionally for the Washington Freedom, magicJack, DC United, Utah Royals FC, Roa IL, FC Kansas City, where she won't two NWSL championships. She is now a Portland Thorn, which is lovely because Portland is the place she calls home. In the NWSL, she has earned the NWSL best 11 every single year and is a 4x defender of the year. Becky is a regular call-up for the national team. Like I said, she is a 2x World Cup Champion and an Olympic gold medalist. She captained the team from 2016-2018 and is currently the president of USWNT Players Association. She is huge advocate for equal pay. And I just want to reiterate she is a freakin' good human being. In today's episode, Becky talks about -how, as an introvert, she has trained her whole life for this quarantine -what sets national team players apart from other players (hint: not a lot) -dealing with having a huge dream, but so much of it being out of your control -the story of a youth national team coach telling her she had no speed or presence, and how she turned those “weaknesses” into strengths -why she named her cats Missy Elliott and Olive Oil -owning her nerdiness -what it was like when she opened a letter from her idol, Ruth Bader Ginsburg -her belief in aliens And more! Whew, how are we doing this week, friends. Sandra and I have hit a little bit of a wall emotionally, which was why this conversation about FC Kansas City felt so cathartic. We talk greats of the game, wins, losses, regional rivals, collapse, and how stars rise and stars fall. The future is uncertain, the past is set, great things come and go. But we're still here to talk about it. We also (!!!) maybe (!!!) have an exciting announcement for our patrons tucked into this episode. Enjoy! Follow Southside Trap! In today's podcast, I interview the technical soccer goddess, Yael Averbuch. I first knew of Yael from afar, as I watched her YouTube videos that she posted of her dribbling and juggling drills. And I was like ‘damnnnn this girl is a hard ass worker and she's got silky smooth touches that make me feel things.' We recently got to know each other through a mutual friend and we bonded over the fact that we are both, what I like to call, “semi psycho obsessive human beings.” Or fully psycho, depending on who you're talking to. People who are obsessive about their dreams are my kind of people. If you're one of those people, I know this episode will resonate. Come join the club. Yael won two NCAA college cups with the North Carolina Tarheels. She has won three championships during her pro career with Sky Blue FC, Western New York flash, and FC Kansas City. She's also played overseas in Russia, Sweden, and Cyprus. Yael has played for US at at every level of the youth national teams and represented the full team from 2007 to 2013. In 2018, Yael was forced to step away from playing due to ulcerative colitis. Despite not currently being on the pitch, she is still heavily involved in the game. She is the executive director of the NWSL Players Association. She is also the founder of Techne Futbol, a soccer training app that provides personal training for soccer players. I highly recommend checking the app out…like I said her touches make me feel things. In our conversation, Yael talks about: her addiction to being productive how positive things done in excess, can go to far why she enjoys not being good at things her process of mastery the one thing she would do differently, if she could go back and redo her national team career again the intimate details of her battle with ulcerative colitis and what this illness has taught her about herself And more. Utah Royals FC striker Amy Rodriguez suffered the lowest of lows two years ago, when she tore her ACL in her first game back from maternity leave with FC Kansas City. After slowly returning in 2018, A-Rod is back with a vengeance, scoring five goals in six matches to lead the Royals up the table in 2019.
Segment three with Becky Sauerbrunn. Becky answers a question from Jen Cooper (@MixxedZone & @KeeperNotes) comparing her experience captaining FC Kansas City in the NWSL's first season vs. the same experience being the captain of Utah Royals in the league's sixth season. Next, Becky reflects on the performance of her new club, Utah Royals, in their innagural season in the NWSL (match highlights/lowlights, trade for Christen Press to bolster offense). Sydney Peters asks Becky what she does to get away from the stress of being a professional soccer player. The segment wraps with Becky talking about what she has been reading, the Neflix show she is currently watching, her emotional reaction to the animated film Coco, her trip to Chile which included her quest for the "world's greatest mojito", and her latest video game addiction.

In the 88th episode of Keep Moving Forward, I interview Real Salt Lake City Women’s Professional Soccer player, Alexa Newfield. “Everyone was once a rookie.” Entering into every situation knowing that everyone has to start somewhere and with the perspective that hard work is the only way to truly win, Alex Newfield continually sets herself up for success. Falling in love with the sport of the soccer at 4 years old and having that passion grow within her after being immersed in the culture at such a young age, Alexa thrived as a young athlete and was catapulted into the world of NCAA DI soccer at the University of North Carolina and then into the professional realm by being drafted right out of college by FC Kansas City. Though her pro journey is far from over, Alexa knows the fragility of the career she is in, recognizing that an injury could end her time on the field at any moment. Because of this, Alexa ensures that her athletic legacy will live on long after she is gone, as she has entrepreneurial aspirations to help athletes in need. It was an honor to speak with her about her journey and I hope you enjoy my interview with Alexa Newfield. For more on Alexa and her upcoming inaugural season with Real Salt Lake Women, follow Alexa on Twitter and her new club on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. If you guys enjoy Keep Moving Forward and want to tell me so, I would love for you to leave me a review on iTunes. Finally, they look at the double header between the USWNT and Canada - Kieran has a moan about a long journey for Emily Sonnett.
Orlando City did not, to put it mildly, do well in Portlandia. Timber Joey was able to fire up his chainsaw thrice which is only a third of the number of Lions who finished the match on the pitch against the Portland Timbers. It was an ugly, brutal 3-0 loss that left nothing to feel good about and so...yay, we get to talk about it! On the other hand, we also get to talk about the Orlando Pride, who punched their ticket to the 2017 NWSL playoffs — not because of their 0-0 draw against the Portland Thorns, but because the Seattle Reign lost to FC Kansas City. So, yay, we get to talk about that! We also discuss OCB’s 2-1 win over the Charleston Battery and what that means for the young Lions, who got just a gem of a goal from Pierre Da Silva on Saturday. Friend of the PawedCast, Jake Catanese from The Bent Musket stops by to discuss tonight’s match-up between Orlando City and the New England Revolution, and the firing of Jay Heaps. Plus, we’ve also got our key match-ups and score predictions for both New England and Saturday’s FC Dallas match-up, as well as our #AskTMLPC mailbag (though we’re mail free this week). Here’s how No. 105 unfurled: 0:12- I’m sick this week but not as sick as I felt watching that performance at Portland. But we give you our Man of the Match anyway and discuss the Pride in the playoffs and OCB as well. 31:57- Jake Catanese tells us all about the Revolution and what they’ve gone through this season and it doesn’t sound any more fun to be a Revs fan right now than a Lions fan, to be honest. 57:52- The mailbag is empty so we give some brief thoughts on HBO’s The Deuce, which we’re both watching right now. Averbuch joins Beyond the Game to talk through the timeline of the announcement, and the next steps of the NWSLPA. The mission of the NWSLPA reads as follows: “We, the Non-Allocated Players of NWSL, vow to build on the opportunity that has been afforded to us, as well as work to achieve those goals that have not yet been attained. We honor the vision and progress of those who came before us...Pledge to work with the League and Allocated Players to advance continued improvements in women's soccer...Commit ourselves to doing all in our power for the betterment of our members so that we may best contribute to the common goal: a world-class product on the field, and to be role models and inspire the next generation off the field.” Show Notes: YaelAverbuch.com On the Road With F.C. It’s the moment many of you have waited for all season. Orlando City is set to take on Atlanta United for the first time ever and it’ll happen in back-to-back weeks, beginning Friday at Orlando City Stadium. The Lions will take on the Five Stripes in a battle for Southeast supremacy in a pair of matches that are vital for both in the Eastern Conference playoff race. Eric Quintana of Dirty South Soccer and the Mouths of the South podcast returns for the first time since Episode 49 of the PawedCast to exchange a little banter and a bit of information ahead of Friday’s match. Penalty kick calls haven’t been kind to Orlando this year but last weekend things may have started to turn around. OCB got one late to draw the Tampa Bay Rowdies as the I-4 Derby visited Orlando City Stadium for the first time in a 1-1 draw. Then on Saturday, the Orlando Pride got a penalty instead of conceding one, in a 4-1 rout of FC Kansas City. We’ve got your breakdowns of these games plus the USMNT’s unconvincing finish to the Gold Cup group stage. Plus, Cyle Larin called up, billboard shenanigans, #AskTMLPC and more. The magic unfolded like this: 0:12- Dave and Michael break down OCB and the Pride from last weekend and neither of us was impressed with the USMNT. 29:59- Eric Quintana joins the party and provides the cheeky banter you’d expect (and want) from the Atlanta side. 47:34- #AskTMLPC and our key match-ups and predictions for Friday’s game. Orlando City may not have won either of its games last week but we’re still feeling pretty OK about the season overall. We break down a “good” loss and a “throw-away” loss and give you our Man of the Match picks for both games. We’re more bullish on the Pride after a road draw against FC Kansas City that came soooo close to being a win. We also discuss Tommy Redding’s call-up to the U-20 national team for the FIFA U-20 World Cup and the World Cup qualifier that Orlando City Stadium will host. We’ve got a bit of a different kind of guest this week as mlssoccer.com writer Simon Veness joins us to tell us just what prompted him to write a book about Orlando City SC. He talks about his introduction to supporting his favorite soccer team and just how many hours of interviews his better half transcribed in the writing of “Defying Expectations,” as well as how you can get it. After a brief tangent to discuss beer and how we Americans like to celebrate other countries’ holidays, we’ve got your key match-ups and score predictions for Saturday’s match-up between Orlando City and Sporting Kansas City. Here’s how the show unfolded: 0:12- Orlando City fell twice on the road last week, but we’re not bent out of shape over it and we’ll tell you why. A lot has happened since we last met, constant listeners. Orlando City has played twice, the Orlando Pride has finished their inaugural NWSL season, and Orlando City B has qualified for the USL playoffs in its first year. We're here to talk about all of that. We're breaking down Orlando City's loss at D.C. United and draw at Toronto FC. The Lions didn't make it very easy for our Man of the Match selections, but we make them anyway. We put a bow on the Orlando Pride's first season and look forward to seeing what Tom Sermanni does with his roster in the off-season. And we look back at Orlando City B's win at Bethlehem Steel -- a historic victory that put the young Lions in the USL playoffs in their inaugural year. Here to help us talk about that and the playoff match ahead is none other than Lewis Neal. The OCB captain, former MLS Lion, and part-time broadcaster talks about his big goal on Sunday, the team's struggles down the stretch without Tony Rocha and Mikey Ambrose, the upcoming match against New York Red Bulls II, and more. And of course we look ahead to the Montreal Impact this Sunday with our predictions for Orlando City's penultimate home match of the season. Here's how it broke down: 0:12- A look back at an ugly loss in DC, an unexpected and yet unsatisfying draw in Toronto, suspensions, the 4-4-2 diamond, the Pride's closing match against FC Kansas City, OCB's win, and more. 45:33- Lewis Neal joins us to give us the lowdown on the young Lions, what the playoff berth means to the club, Anthony Pulis' first season as a coach and Sunday's match at NYRBII. 1:00:56- Our key match-ups and score predictions for Orlando City vs. Montreal Impact. And that's a wrap! We'll be back to break down the Montreal game and look ahead to the final two games. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Well, we've finally got a breather, of sorts, in the schedule, but that doesn't mean we're shorting you on the PawedCast magic. We're here to break down Orlando City's dramatic 2-2 draw on the road against New York City FC at Yankee Stadium on Sunday, including our picks for Man of the Match. We've also got plenty to say about Orlando Pride's loss at FC Kansas City, as well as Orlando City B's comeback win over Charlotte Independence. Without an MLS game this weekend, we instead talked (begrudgingly) about the injury that will keep Kaká out of Copa America. It's a darn shame he'll miss playing in his home stadium while representing his country, but injuries are a part of soccer and there's nothing fair about soccer. Speaking of Copa America Centenario, we give you our predictions for who will hoist the trophy when this international tournament is all said and done. We are split, of course. The only thing left is for you to listen to this wonderful piece of sonic bliss -- which runs a little over an hour! -- and for us to sign off saying "Savannah Bananas!" (You'll get it after you listen.) We did this all in one take this week, and quite honestly I was too tired to go back and do a rundown. But hey, no need to fast forward. It's all good!
