Why should I go to church? What makes the church so very special? The church is not a building. It is an ASSEMBLAGE. It is a gathering of the people that He indwells. We don't "find God" in temples, or in nations or in particular cities anymore. We find God in PEOPLE. He's commanded us to gather these people together every Sunday morning to display Him in a unique way. If all you "get out of church" is something like, "I liked the message", you are missing the main thing: IT IS THE ASSEMBLAGE OF THE INDWELT THAT UNIQUELY MANIFESTS HIM. See you in church this Sunday. bewithme.us Instagram bewithme.us@gmail.com

Jesus is the true and better Adam. He's our Passover Lamb whose death brings about a new Exodus. Indwelt by God's Spirit, Christ's church is the end-time temple of God. And on and on we could go. The Bible is littered with typologies, "prophetic patterns," that anticipate and find their fulfillment in Christ. But what exactly is typology, and how does it function? What are its underlying assumptions, the theological operating system if you will, on which it runs? And should we be imitating the apostles by practicing typological interpretation even today? Mitch Chase joins us to help us answer these questions.

Romans 7:14 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin. 15 For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do. 16 If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that it is good. 17 But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. 18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. 19 For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. 20 Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. 21 I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good. 22 For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man. 23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. 24 O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25 I thank God--through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin. THE CHRISTIAN DILEMMA PAUL AS A CHRISTIAN MAN... Who is carnal, sold under sin - Ro 7:14-15 'Sold under sin' is exactly what the new convert does not know! Forgiven, justified, he knows himself to be: and he has the joy of it! But now to find an evil nature, of which he had never become really conscious, and of which he thought himself fully rid, when he first believed, is a 'second lesson' which is often more bitter than the first—of guilt!" Paul's statement that he was then as a Christian sold under sin may seem to contradict what he wrote earlier in chapter 6 about no longer being the slave of sin. The phrase "sold in bondage to sin" is proof to many interpreters that Paul was describing a non-Christian here. However, in chapter 6 Paul did not say that being dead to sin means that sin has lost its appeal for the Christian. It still has a strong appeal to the Christian whose human nature is still sinful (6:15-23). He said that being dead to sin means that we no longer must follow sin's dictates. In one sense the Christian is not a slave of sin (6:1-14). We have died to it, and it no longer dominates us. Nevertheless, in another sense sin still has a strong attraction for us since our basic human nature is still sinful, and we retain that nature throughout our lifetime. For example, a criminal released from prison no longer has to live within the sphere of existence prescribed by prison walls. However, he still has to live within the confines of his human limitations. God has liberated Christians from the prison house of sin (6:1-14). Notwithstanding we still carry with us a sinful nature that will be a source of temptation for us as long as we live (7:14-25). To minimize the difficulty of grasping this distinction Paul used different expressions to describe the two relationships. In chapter 6 he used "slaves," but in chapter 7 he wrote "sold" (v. 14). In chapter 6 he spoke of the relationship of the new man in Christ (the whole person, the Christian) to sin. In chapter 7 he spoke of the relationship of the flesh (a part of every person, including the new man in Christ) to sin. Adam sold all human beings into bondage to sin when he sinned (5:12, 14). Desires to good, finds himself unable Desires to abstain from evil, finds himself unable Paul's sinful human nature influenced him to such an extent that he found himself voluntarily doing (approving) the very things that he despised intellectually. This caused him to marvel. All Christians can identify with him in this. Who agrees the law is good, but finds that sins dwells in him - Ro 7:16-20 V 16 The apostle's attitude toward the Law was not the reason for his dilemma. Ro 7:17 But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. Rather his problem was traceable to the sin that dwelt within him, namely, his sinful flesh. Paul was not trying to escape responsibility but was identifying the source of his sin, his sinful flesh. "I" describes the new man Paul had become at his conversion (Gal. 2:20). Viewed as a whole person he was dead to sin. Nevertheless, the source of sin within him was specifically his sinful human nature that was still very much alive It comes as a terrible discovery for a new believer, or an untaught believer, to realize that our problem with sin is complex. We are sinners not only because we commit acts of sin (Ch. 3) and because, as descendants of Adam, we sin because he sinned (Ch. 5). We are also sinners because we possess a flesh that is thoroughly sinful (Ch. 7). Jesus Christ paid the penalty for acts of sin, He removed the punishment of original sin, and He enables us to overcome the power of innate sin. In general, we may say that in verses 14-17, the emphasis is upon the practicing what is hated, —that is, the inability to overcome evil in the flesh; while in verses 18-21, the emphasis is upon the failure to do the desired good, —the inability, on account of the flesh, to do right. 18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. In his flesh nothing good dwells The desire to do good is present, the ability to perform is not "Thus the double failure of a saved man either to overcome evil or to accomplish good—is set forth. There must come in help from outside, beyond himself!" V19-20 These verses restate the idea of verses 15 and 17 respectively. Paul evidently repeated the ideas to heighten our appreciation for the sense of frustration that he felt. Ro 7:19 For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. Paul meant that sin had thoroughly corrupted his flesh 20 Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. The good he desires he does not, the evil he desires not he does Thus sin dwells in his flesh Who is enslaved to a "law" (of sin and death, cf. Ro 8:2) – Ro 7:21-23 Ro 7:21 I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good. 22 For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man. Ps 1:2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night. 2Co 4:16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. Eph 3:16; Col 3:9-10 23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. Where evil is present in one who desires to do good Where a law in his members (flesh) wages war against the law of his mind Where the law in his members brings him into captivity to the law of sin Who finds himself wretched - Ro 7:24 "O wretched man that I am!" "Who shall deliver me from this body of death?" -- A wretched dilemma: sold under sin, indwelt by sin, enslaved to a law of sin! The agony of this tension and our inability to rid ourselves of our sinful flesh that urges us to do things that lead to death come out even more strongly here. What Christian has not felt the guilt and pain of doing things that he or she knows are wrong? We will never escape this battle with temptation in this life. DELIVERED BY CHRIST... Expressed in chapter seven - Ro 7:25 The solution to this dilemma is not escape from temptation but victory over it. By way of anticipation, interrupting his train of thought "I thank God - through Jesus Christ our Lord!" But again, the dilemma: willing to serve the law of God with the mind, but with his flesh he serves the law of sin! Explained in chapter eight - Ro 8:1-6,11-14 There is no condemnation for those in Christ, provided they walk according to the Spirit For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ frees one from the law of sin and death! 1) Christ's death fulfills the righteous requirement (death for sin) 2) Becoming spiritually minded is life and peace, for submission to God is now possible 3) Indwelt by the Spirit, He imparts life to our mortal bodies - cf. Ro 6:12-13; Eph 3:16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, 4) We are no longer debtors (enslaved) to the flesh, to live according to the flesh 5) By the Spirit we can put to death the deeds of the flesh, and live as sons of God! -- A blessed condition: no longer enslaved to sin, but empowered by the Spirit! CONCLUSION In Romans 7, Paul vividly illustrates the weakness of the Law of Moses... The Law was holy, just, and good, but it did not offer true deliverance It did not offer deliverance from the guilt and power of sin - cf. Jn 8:34 One can will to do good, but the ability to truly do as one should is not there Have you experienced freedom from the guilt of sin through the blood of Christ (Ep 1:7)? Are you experiencing freedom from the power of sin through the indwelling Spirit (Ro 8:12-13)? Both blessings begin when one receives Christ Lessons Have you ever felt the weight of sin like Paul – unbelievers don't Do you have a longing to please God and keep the law? Has God ever broken you so that you have said wretched man that I am and turned to God for salvation Mark 8:36 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. Have you trusted Him as your Savior? He can Save you if You ask Him based on His death, burial, and resurrection for your sins. Believe in Him for forgiveness of your sins today. “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” -John 8:32 Our mission is to spread the gospel and to go to the least of these with the life-changing message of Jesus Christ; We reach out to those the World has forgotten. hisloveministries.podbean.com #HLMSocial hisloveministries.net https://www.instagram.com/hisloveministries1/?hl=en Don't go for all the gusto you can get, go for all the God (Jesus Christ) you can get. Our study of the Biblical teaching of the Ministry of the Holy Spirit continues with what it means to be born of the Holy Spirit. Being born of the Spirit is the beginning of becoming a Spiritual Man. Dr. Mitchell will reference several New Testament scriptures that speak of being born of the Spirit. John 1, John 3, James 1 and 1st Peter 1 all of which speak of being born of God by the Holy Spirit. Dr. Mitchell will be discussing 4 definite things the Spirit of God does in the Christian. 1.Being born of the Spirit for relationship, 2. Indwelt by the Spirit of God as channels for service, 3. Sealed by the Spirit in Christ for preservation 4. and Baptized by the Spirit into the body of Christ which is union. This week we continue through Romans 8 with verses 9-11. This is a deeply comforting passage at a time that we all need great comfort. For all who are in Christ, we are promised that the Spirit of God dwells within us. This Sunday we will look at who the Holy Spirit is, and what it means for us to be indwelt by God's Spirit.
How Jesus’ presence can change our perspective on COVID19 Luke 5:1-16 Intro We are making history right now. COVID 19 is changing how the world operates: economically, socially, and perhaps most importantly, it is changing how people think. People are afraid because science doesn’t have answers for this virus. I admit, it is startling to me, especially since I have a new baby on the way and a wife who is categorically immune-compromised. But how should Christians respond in times like these? How have Christians responded in similar situations in history? Historically, when the world fled from cities infected with plagues of even greater magnitude, many Christians stayed. Why? To serve the dying and preach the Gospel to them. Jesus said, would save his life will lose it, but whoever would lose his life for my sake and the Gospel will find it. Christians throughout time, armed with promises like these from our Lord have put themselves at risk for the sake of others’ present and eternal destiny. Martin Luther, in 1527, when the severe bubonic plague hit Wittenberg, refused to flee the city, though many called him to. His actions cost his daughter Elizabeth her life. Despite the tragedy, Luther wrote a tract entitled, “Whether Christians Should Flee the Plague,” where he called Christians to die at their posts. It wasn’t time to neglect duties of serving the sick or pastoring congregations; it was time to take up the cross of Christ to serve the needy.[1] This may seem foolish to some and admirable to others. To be clear, in making this point, I’m not advocating for foolish actions that could lead to spreading COVID 19. We are clearly taking careful measures to prevent that. Rather, I simply want to ask why is it that Christians respond so differently from the world? I believe our text today from Luke has an important lesson for us. In the retelling of the call of the first disciples, we’ll see that Jesus’s presence reorients perspective on reality. This is what I want to focus on today for the next several minutes: Jesus’s presence reorients our perspective on reality, but not just in how we think about COVID 19, but all of our problems. Let’s dive in to verse 1 and point 1 1-7 God’s solution for the broken world is his presence On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, 2 and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. Jesus’s ministry was in full swing. He was traveling from town to town preaching and healing, and we are told that reports about Jesus were spreading, so crowds were coming to him in droves. The people were hungry for the hope and healing they had heard about. There wasn’t a pandemic in Israel at the time, but the presence of the oppressive Roman power, sickness, demon oppression, and all other effects of sin drove people to Jesus like some of you were driven to the stores for toilet paper and sanitizer wipes this week. What was Jesus’s solution to their problems? Verse 3: 3 Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. Jesus comes near to teach the people. Notice that phrase “word of God” in verse 1. They came to hear the Word of God. God knows humanity’s need, and he came near to hungry people and taught us about himself because “man does not live on bread alone but on every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” Yes, Jesus healed and cast out demons, but Jesus makes clear in 4:33 that his primary purpose is to preach the good news of the kingdom. One of the reasons we are gathering here today in the midst of this panic is that you and me need the Word of God. This is God’s solution for the broken world. Himself. His Word. When God speaks through his Scripture, through preaching, through others, through images like baptism and the Lord’s supper, God is manifesting his presence in the time of our need. Verse 4. 4 And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” 5 And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” Jesus – not a fisherman – tells the experienced fishermen to fish at a time they knew was bad for fishing. Simon Peter, maybe a little frustrated, reminded Jesus that they had fished all night and caught nothing. Life is hard and sometimes very hard. We don’t know the effects a bust work day had on Simon and his partners. It’s not unlikely that a week or two of bad fishing would have felt similar to a major drop in the stock market, work being cancelled, etc. Nonetheless, the power that Peter had seen or at least heard about in Jesus life made him follow with these words “But at your word I will let down the nets”. Let’s continue with verse 6: 6 And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. 7 They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. In an act of divine omniscience, Jesus fixed all of Peter’s problems… so it would seem. All God had to do was come near through his incarnate Son Jesus and everything got better. The sick were healed, the dead were raised, and even financial problems were overcome. God’s presence in the world literally changes everything. But this should cause you to be asking an important question: if God can just fix every broken thing by coming near like this, why isn’t he doing it? Why isn’t he just coming and ending COVID 19 and all the world’s problems? Let’s look at the point 2 for our answer. 8-10 Jesus’ presence reorients us to the reality of our sin problem 8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” Peter didn’t jump up and down because he just hit big, but fell to his knees in repentance and fear. In the face of Jesus Christ, Peter’s problems in life got really little and his problem of sin got really big. Peter realized who he was standing before. Jesus was not just any man. He had put on display his divine power, which meant that Peter was standing in the presence of God.[2]This was a Theophany. God was made manifest before Peter’s eyes. If we trace the Scriptures, every biblical figure who encountered God’s presence became keenly aware of their unworthiness before God with the reaction of fear. From the time that sin entered the world through Adam, man could no longer be in the presence of God without divine provision. Either a sacrifice of blood had to be made or that person would die if they came near. The problem with humanity is that we are unclean and cannot be in the presence of the God of life. Even more, though he is our need, we are actually blind to our need for him and refuse to come to him for cleansing and healing. So we practice every self-help tactic to get better or more successful, we take all the right supplements and apply all the right age serums to stay young and healthy, but still we die because we don’t have God, because we choose things that are not God to be god for us! But Peter is finally seeing clearly. Jesus’ presence has reoriented him to reality. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” 11 And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him. Somehow, though Peter is sinful and is right to be afraid, Jesus says, ‘do not be afraid.’ If we understand sin rightly like Peter did that day, Jesus’s response should catch all of us by surprise. Instead of Jesus expelling Peter from his presence, he invites him to join him in his mission of rescuing other sinners! How can Christ tolerate and even welcome Peter into his mission alongside him? Wouldn’t that taint Jesus’s holiness and mission? Let me point you to verse 13 for our answer. 13 And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately the leprosy left him. It’s probable that this account of the cleansing of the leper was placed next to Luke 5:1–11 due to the similarity between Peter’s response and the leper’s.[3]Both fell at the feet of Jesus, and both called him “Lord”. In the Old Covenant Law it wasn’t sinful to be leprous. However, someone’s uncleanness like leprosy was a powerful picture of the sinfulness in the world and in each of us. So the leper understood his need for cleansing and was desperate for it even like Peter. There was perhaps nothing more important to this man in this moment than to become clean so that he could have his life back. Jesus’s presence reorients us to reality by showing us what are greatest problem is. Friends, COVID 19 is not it, not money problems, kid problems, or any other problem. The problem is that we have made God small in our lives by replacing him with these things. We’ve made idols in place of the truly great God. As a result death enters in. It’s because sin is in the world that viruses like COVID exist, that death itself exists. Jesus’s presence reminds us that our world needs cleansing from sin. We should all be mourning over our sin and the sin of the world today far more than we mourn over COVID 19. What is Jesus’s solution? Jesus touched the leper. When Jesus touched this leprous man, he took his uncleanness on himself. He was identifying with his uncleanness. But not only that, he was offering his cleanness to the leper. Our sin for his righteousness. This is the Good News of the Kingdom. This exchange is exactly what Jesus accomplished on the cross. He would be shamed by culture and cut off from society and all usefulness to it so that you and me could be redeemed for his purposes, fruitful to God and others. Let me show you how I’m making this connection. In verse 14 Jesus told the healed man to go directly to the priest and make an offering according to the Law of Moses. Leviticus 14 lays out those instructions. The leper would have gone later that day and offered a lamb and a turtledove in his place. The priest would have then sprinkled him with the blood of those animals then he would be set free. Don’t you see? All of this was pointing to the day when Christ would be slaughtered as the true and better Lamb of God for our sins on the cross. His blood is what sprinkles sinners clean, what makes us whole from head to toe, and sets us free to serve. The cleansing of the leper is an illustration of God cleansing and commissioning unclean, unworthy sinners like Peter, even like us for his service. God’s solution to the greatest problem on earth was his coming to earth to suffer in our place for our sin and rise from death in order to redeem body and soul for his purposes. And if the greatest problem on earth was done away with, than we can take Jesus’s words, “Fear Not” to heart. Not even death can separate us from the love of God! Look at verse 10 again with me for the final point. 10b-11 – Jesus commissions us to bring his presence to the lost world And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” 11 And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him. Just like they had made a profession of catching fish, in following Jesus they would make their lives about “catching” men. Verse 11 tells us that these first disciplesleft everything and followed him. This call to catch men was not just for Peter but for the other disciples AND for every disciple of Jesus. And catch men they did… Peter would go on to preach the Gospel until he was crucified upside down by Roman officials. He and the rest of the 12 walked into death’s valley’s in order to fish for men because sin had been overcome. They didn’t have to fear anything or anyone. When Jesus commissioned his disciples he reminded them (even us) that he would be with us always even to the end of the age. This is a reminder that we have become the temple of God. Indwelt by his Spirit, his presence, it is now our task to take the Gospel of Jesus to the lost world. In this way, the presence of God is manifest to everyone we come near and offer the hope of the Gospel. This is how and why Christians stay put in the face of trials. This is why we react like we do. Because God has promised those who trust him eternal life in resurrection bodies on a new heaven and new earth where there is no death, pain, financial distress, or any other curse. Application: The big question for us today in the face of all the world’s fear, is this: Is your view of reality built on the greatness of Jesus who came to deal with the world’s greatest problem? In other words, if Jesus is small and our sin is small in our eyes than we will fear like everyone else and our hope will simply be that the virus stops wrecking our lives so we can go on with it. But if Jesus is big and our sin is big then we will have reason to cling to him for forgiveness of sins and a renewal of all things through his Kingdom advancing in the world. And if Jesus has taken our sin away than we have every reason to have great hope and serve in this time. Oh that God would restore a reverence and awe at who we worship so that we might see the world and our problems clearly. Secondly, what are you fishing for? Jesus calls you to leave all and follow him and be near him today in the greatest rescue mission ever made. Are your unbelieving co-workers, family members, the lost what drives your prayers and energy, or has your little kingdom, your safety, your needs, your desires taken the central place in your life? Times like these remind everyone how transient and short life is, so now is perfect time to offer the hope of the Gospel to the lost world. It should also remind us that the times are urgent. People are dying without Christ and we have the world’s solution. Let’s repent of how much time we are wasting on meaningless things as a church and begin to give our lives to the cause of Christ. We must repent of our fear, our lack of faith, and put our trust in the God who comes near us and identifies with us in our suffering. Romans 8:5-11 (ESV) 1There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. 3 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. 6 For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. 7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. 8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. 10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
At the moment of regeneration, the Holy Spirit not only acts upon us, but also takes up residence within us. On this Renewing Your Mind Minute, R.C. Sproul identifies the source of our spiritual life and growth.

The Christian life is not completed in conversion. In the new birth, a person is changed from a sinner to a saint. Now, free to never sin again, the new Christian must go on to seek the Pentecost baptism of the Holy Spirit. Jesus also described this as the indwelling of the Holy Spirit: he is with you (in conversion), and shall be in you (in Pentecost). Without this baptism, you will never be greatly successful in soul-winning. Indeed, Jesus […]

Join the PorchCast as we do a live hangout discussion on the topic of "Were the Old Testament saints indwelt by the Holy Spirit?" Most will acknowledge that there was a different work or activity between the Old and the New but depending on your conclusions regarding each and every individual being indwelt we are forced to ask the real question: If each individual did not posses the indwelling "How were the elect remnant in Israel kept and influenced by God without the Spirit indwelling them?" The Christian is indwelt by the Holy Spirit, changed by the Holy Spirit, and empowered for victory by the Holy Spirit.
A sermon on God's plan for the church. Believers should not quench the Holy Spirit. They should instead be yielded to the Spirit so that He may accomplish His purposes through the church.

In this lesson, we continue to look at what it means to "be filled with the Spirit."
After telling the believer not to be drunk with wine, Paul instructs us to "be filled with the Spirit." But what does this mean? There is so much foolishness done in the name of "being filled with the Spirit," let's find out what the Bible really teaches.
