Hear the Spirit pt. 2 | Pastor Matthew Medick | 5/24/2026 by Redeeming Love Church
God wants us to dive in his word and use what we have to become better. We learn how to walk in the spirit as we seek to understand God's word. In this episode you will hear tips on how I learned the word over time.
The sermon centers on the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22–23, emphasizing that these qualities—love, joy, and peace—are not moral achievements but supernatural graces produced by the Holy Spirit in every believer, serving as evidence of genuine salvation and spiritual assurance. Rooted in the contrast between the deeds of the flesh and the Spirit's work, the sermon argues that these fruits are inseparable, foundational, and inherently present in all Christians, not as a result of human effort but as a divine transformation from within. Love, defined as agape—self-giving, sacrificial, and holy—is presented as the greatest virtue, reflecting God's own nature and motivating righteous action even in difficult circumstances. Joy is portrayed not as fleeting happiness dependent on circumstances, but as a deep, abiding contentment rooted in God's unchanging character, sovereignty, and the certainty of salvation. Peace is understood as an objective reality of reconciliation with God, not merely the absence of conflict, enabling believers to face trials with confidence, knowing they are secure in Christ's victory. Ultimately, the message calls believers to abide in Christ, trusting the Spirit to cultivate these fruits, which together form the foundation of a life that glorifies God and bears lasting fruit.

The sermon centers on the transformative power of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer, emphasizing that the fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control—is not a product of human effort or moral striving, but the inevitable and invariable result of regeneration and the indwelling presence of the Spirit. Rooted in Galatians 5:22–23 and contrasted with the deeds of the flesh, this fruit is presented as a unified, holistic evidence of genuine salvation, not a checklist of achievements, and stands in stark contrast to the world's counterfeit versions of these virtues. The sermon underscores that while Christians still struggle with sin, their lives are fundamentally changed by grace, and good works are the natural outflow of justification, not its basis, thereby affirming the biblical doctrine of salvation by faith alone. It warns against confusing spiritual gifts with the fruit of the Spirit and rejects any notion that final salvation depends on human performance, instead affirming that true transformation is God's work, sustained by His grace and evidenced in a life increasingly conformed to Christ's likeness.

Why does it seem like the Spirit fails to transform some people? In this episode of the Bible in Life podcast, we think through a question sent in by a listener who asked, why does it seem like the Spirit fails to transform some people? We explore: the tension of the already-not yet our need to partner with the Spirit the importance of recognizing that we all start at different places the failure of the Church in the way we preach the gospel and teach about the Spirit Free 30 Page eBook to help you Hear and Heed the Bible: https://www.johnwhittaker.net Support this ministry: Set up a recurring monthly or a one-time donation at the link below. http://worldfamilymissions.org/john-whittaker/ The Listener's Commentary - In-depth teaching through books of the Bible to help you learn the Bible for yourself: https://www.listenerscommentary.com Connect with John: Social Media- connect on facebook and instagram Email - john@johnwhittaker.net If you've been helped by this teaching leave a review and share freely - on Facebook, Instagram, X, via email.
Set Your Mind on the Things of the Spirit | Life in the Spirit, pt. 6 One of the keys to life in the Spirit is what we allow to fill and occupy our minds. The apostle Paul writes, "For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, and those who are in the flesh cannot please God." Praying in the Spirit | Life in the Spirit, pt. 5 How does the Holy Spirit help us pray? What does it mean to pray in the Spirit? Ephesians 6:18 "With every prayer and request, pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be alert with all perseverance and every request for all the saints" Romans 8:26-27 Now in the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. Pastor Becky Johnson unpacks how we live as new creations, holding the tension of the “now and not yet.” While creation, believers, and even the Spirit groan in a world marked by suffering, we don't grieve without hope, our future is secure and being made new. In the midst of it all, the Holy Spirit meets us, interceding on our behalf and strengthening us to persevere.
When we think about the gifts of the Spirit, we often think of power—signs, wonders, and miracles. But Scripture points us to something even greater: a community shaped by radical, self-giving love. What if the most convincing evidence of God's Spirit at work isn't just what we do—but how we love?CITY CHURCH EXISTS TO HELP PEOPLE FIND THEIR WAY TO GOD FROM WHERE THEY ARE.You can find us here:www.citychurchboulder.com www.facebook.com/citychurchboulder www.instagram.com/citychurchboulder
Be Filled with the Spirit | Life in the Spirit, pt. 4 Ephesians 5:15-18 says, "15 So then, be careful how you walk, not as unwise people but as wise, 16 making the most of your time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, in which there is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit" As we continue our series on "Life in the Spirit," in this episode of the Bible in Life podcast we reflect on what it means to be "filled with the Spirit." What is the greatest gift the church needs today? Jon Tyson argues that it's the gift of discernment, and Tyler Staton says nothing matters more than learning to discern the voice of God. In a cultural moment filled with noise, competing narratives, and spiritual confusion, followers of Jesus Christ must learn how to recognize truth, resist deception, and follow the leading of the Spirit. In this sermon we explore why discernment matters, how it grows, and why it may be one of the most crucial spiritual gifts for the church today. How to Walk by the Spirit (Galatians 5:16) | Life in the Spirit, pt. 3 Galatians 5:16 says, "But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh." This is the basic behavioral command for Christians. We can obey all other commands only insofar as we are obeying this command, because the Spirit's presence and power is what enables the transformation necessary to become the kind of person who can obey the other commands. So how do we walk by the Spirit? Tune in to this episode of the Bible in Life podcast for some reflections on how to walk by the Spirit. This past weekend, Trent walked us through Romans 8:1-4. We looked at what our status was before we entered into Christ, how God accomplished our redemption, and how we should live in light of it!
In Ephesians 6, the Apostle Paul emphasized the need for Prayer in the Spirit. But what does that mean, and how do I put that in action?
