Sleeplessness, anxiety, unhealthy eating habits—we often regard these as just part of the “modern life”. But these can have more far-reaching effects on our well-being. And many times, people don’t realize that these often disregarded factors can be traced from an unaddressed trauma. The discourse around this becomes extra important as the world navigates a 180-degree shift in our lives as individuals and societies to cope with a pandemic. People explore a newly evolving world of work, mostly, with uncertainty and a small support system. But this episode’s guest, Patrick Haraghy, a therapist specializing in trauma, is out to take listeners through it with his five resources to stabilize our lives, whether traumatized or not. For Patrick, these five key resources—exercise, food, engagement, relaxation, and sleep—may seem simple and have always been a part of the health and wellbeing narrative. Yet people continue to take for granted many of them, especially sleep. A lot of healing happens during sleep—both for physical and mental healing. But trauma—whether developmental or shock trauma—often messes up one’s ability to get a good night’s sleep. And hence, the lack of it affects the body’s ability to recover and heal. And so it is important to know and practice some techniques to get a good night's sleep. Practicing sleep hygiene would usually involve small habits such as not having caffeine in the evening, not eating late, not taking alcohol, trying to go to bed at the same time and getting up at the same time (so activate the internal clock), and preparing for sleep like a baby like going for a bath and doing something but not watching TV, etc. In Ayurveda, this has been discussed in Samhita—how you run your day, creating an evening routine, and creating the atmosphere for sleep. But dealing with trauma is a long-haul flight. It can be activated later in our lives. The body tends to protect us from that trauma, shifting us to avoidance mode for so long, but then something might come and trigger it. A lot of people become self-reliant because of trauma and develop difficulty in reaching out. Hence, creating a safe space and opening up the self to external support is key to addressing the trauma for good. And of course, practicing these five resources works wonders! To Patrick, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with seeking help. Life is not a rehearsal and so life should be lived in its full potential. There's a good life out there to be lived. Patrick Sheehan graduated from law school in 1987 and his first job was for the IRS. He had plenty of responsibilities and treated the five years he worked there as additional education. When he turned 29 he left the IRS to teach at the law school he went to as well as started his own business helping people solve their IRS problems. [3:50] There are three different divisions you can work at in the IRS; general litigation, tax litigation, and criminal litigation. The last two years Patrick worked at the IRS, he worked in the general litigation division, which really helped him later on with his business. [5:30] Patrick’s acceptance rate with his clients is around 96%. It really depends on the work you do long before an offer is filed. [6:40] Most people don’t realize, and that includes practitioners, that the IRS will subsidize the things that are necessary for the health and wealth of the individual. In many ways, you’re trying to do financial planning in reverse. [8:30] Patrick relates a story of a husband and wife that was about to file jointly and what they did instead that saved them $50,000. [9:30] The second thing that most successful people have is specialized knowledge. Patrick’s best year in business prior to working with Michael was in 2011 where he brought in $1.1 million, but each year after that the revenue steadily declined. [11:35] Patrick attended the Austin seminar with a chip on his shoulder. He doubted that Michael would be able to show him something new after 28 years in the business but he had his mind blown. He knew how to do the work but Michael showed him how to market the business. [13:25] If you solve a problem quickly you are not getting the value of what you’ve brought, and that’s where a flat fee has made a really big deal to Patrick’s bottom line. [14:40] If Patrick doesn’t take on another client for 2019 his business is on track to do over $1.4 million in revenue. He will have also gone from 3 employees in 2018 to 9 professionals working for him by the end of this year. [17:40] Patrick used to personally screen clients but he’s now taught his people to screen potential clients in 3 minutes or less. Flat fees and value billing has transformed Patrick’s business completely. Know the value you’re providing and don’t underestimate what you’re worth. [21:10] Another pro tip is that nobody gets to see Patrick without reserving their spot without a credit card. A lot of people are afraid to implement this but it’s a way of properly positioning and pre-framing the client before they even meet with you. [23:20] Google Adwords and multi-channel marketing campaigns are very important. When someone sees your business come up in multiple searches and multiple places it’s very powerful and builds credibility. [24:20] If you want to get into the tax resolution business the Tax Domination Toolkit is super important. Getting access to a mastermind group is also a big asset. It can be overwhelming at first, but the key is to pick one thing and just do it, then work your way through the system. [25:50] There are 13.2 million people who owe money to the IRS. There are plenty of clients for everybody. For Patrick that means sending his smaller cases to his former competitors so that when they get bigger cases that they can’t handle they hand them off to him. In this episode, Patrick and Christi have just entered their darkest time. For Patrick the night has arrived, and two choices are set before him. Choose to fight or choose to run. When it comes to relationships, especially marriage in today’s culture, running seems to be the norm. However, Patrick shares during the darkest time in his life, God was doing a deep work within him and their marriage. God is always working for our good, even though it does not feel like it.

"You have to learn how to make a friend before you can call him a friend." #OnTheWayToNewWork #Podcast58 #TheNewYorkTapes Patrick Harris has been working for 20 years in order to connect Madison Avenue with Silicon Valley. In doing so, he actively accompanied both - the development of the classic web search and the development from search to the social web. He was the first employee in the Global Agency Development team. He could co-develop the New York location of facebook from 25 to 2,000 employees. The decision to swap his corner office at Microsoft 7 years ago, for a job in the facebook company had several reasons. From the first moment, he felt that facebook was a mission-driven company that links hacker culture with the drive to share, connect and form communities. Above all, it was the employees of facebook who convinced him of this. One of the most common phrases he heard in his first months was the question: "How can I help you"? Facebook helps its employees to build a sustainable career. An internal program called FUEL is about developing an individual plan. There are different components, and each team decides for itself whether they use it. When communicating with his team, Patrick strives to reach each of his direct reports as often as possible on their preferred communication channels. So in his experience, there are people who are more likely to belong to the category "phone guy", whilst others prefer Messenger, Workplace or WhatsApp and others again prefer it by mail. It does not surprise us that facebook workplace is the most used channel. For Patrick it is the "natural extension of our culture". In this episode, we talk to Patrick about the 'meeting culture' within the facebook organization and get to know some exciting "hacks" here. For example, Patrick and his team are increasingly using "24 hour pre-reads" and he encourages his people “to present the last page first”. Facebook gives its employees the freedom not to go to meetings, if they feel they can not contribute to or profit from it. There are (developer) teams who have agreed on a "no meeting Wednesday". The offices of facebook also have a special meaning behind them. For Patrick, who flies 250,000 to 300.000 miles a year, it always feels like coming home. Besides this fact, the office is always "unfinished by design" to remind everyone that facebook is not finished yet. With very personal insights into his working style, his way of learning and communicating with his family, we come to an end and wonder again how quickly time has passed. Who is that on the subway muttering to himself? The shell-shocked vet or the man with the tail or the faces you can't make out. Is it just me or is that bag twitching? Who said that? Who are these people at this party, why can't I breathe and who is my girlfriend dancing with and why can't I breathe and where lurks the Vibroman? Natural questions if you're the main character of Jacob's Ladder (1990). For Patrick and guest Jim Laczkowski of Director's Club, the questions are a little more specific: How does a director like Adrian Lyne make a movie like this? What historical basis is there for this film? And can you create a subjective nightmare and still try to ground it in a Oliver Stone styled historically-based paranoia thriller? And how cute is Danny Aiello, a year out from Do the Right Thing, as a cherubic guardian angel? Actually, that one I can answer right here: the cutest. In addition to tackling the many rungs of Jacob's Ladder, Jim and Patrick are offered a rare opportunity to program a horror film festival. This is not one to miss! Anyone who doesn't listen to this is a real chump! 0:00 - 4:30 - Intro 4:30 - 1:58:38 - Commentary 1:58:38 - 2:33:07 - Questions 2:33:08 - 2:35:03 - Outro

The Paleopals start the show by breaking down some of the pedantic scientific distinctions brought up on io9. 00:27:09 - While there may be no real distinction between left and right, we know for sure that at least one hand of each Paleopal holds a drink, the question is, what is it? For Patrick it's and Old Dominion Oak Barrel Stout. Kelly enjoys a Real Ale Rio Blanco, complete with a drawl. Ryan enjoys an Aviation from Juliana. It's a classic pre-prohibition cocktail, and Juli has been mixing up a storm. Finally, Charlie imbibes a silver bullet. 00:32:42 - Will Ryan been able to let the others speak when Trailer Trash Talk tackles Marvel's The Avengers? The only way to find out is to listen. 00:45:37 - We now know newts use their kidneys for sex. We're not sure exactly how, we're not sure exactly why, but we know that it happens. Thank you, science! 00:54:24 - PaleoPOWs are a lot like sex kidneys, if you really want one you'll have to go and find it. Ryan has a bit of coin in the form of a donation from Doug S. Thanks Dough! Patrick answers a question from retroflatus, who in return promises to buy a mug. How'd we do, retroflatus? Charlie has an e-mail from Pedro P. critiquing the decline of our transitional powers. We do our best. And lastly, Kelly has a comment from Bob about where the atmosphere ends. How appropriate!
