I will always be different. This is what Shelby has always thought about himself. He has a weird pull to find the truth in things and has questioned almost everything for his entire life. He is not sure why or where it all started. It was not until his 21st birthday and a 3-day drinking binge that he fell into a mental health downward spiral he could never have imagined. He has been in the hole for a year with no help from doctors or the conventional system. He remembered laying in his bed one day and letting go of every last ounce of drive he had. Shelby thought that he actually might die. Everything just felt like death for him. However, he decided to give it one last shot and do everything he could to bounce back. He came back stronger than he ever was -- mentally and physically. Shelby continued to challenge himself, and now he is working on his new project, the Azhen Sanctuary, which serves his purpose of uncovering the truth and finding a better way to live. “No matter how prepared you think you are for the death of a loved one, it still comes as a shock, and it still hurts very deeply.” - Bill Graham Losing a family member is arguably one of the hardest things we will go through. Nothing can ever prepare us for grief. Losing someone is like losing a piece of yourself. According to the natural flow of life, the children say goodbye first to their parents. That is why it feels harder when it is the other way around. You can never imagine the pain parents have to go through in this unfortunate event. But have you ever thought about what siblings go through in such an occurrence? Usually, the parents mainly receive the condolences and the emotional support. But how about the sisters and brothers left behind? Are they receiving the same support they need in these times of grief? As a result, Zander Sprague ended up writing about his own experience in his book Making Lemonade: Choosing a Positive Pathway After Losing Your Sibling. Additionally, this opened him up to pursue and create a more epic journey for himself and others. Zander Sprague is an internationally acclaimed public speaker, Amazon Best-Selling Author, and Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC). His mission is to help millions of people make the EPIC choices that create an EPIC life. In this week's episode of People of Purpose, Tanur and Zander will talk about his sibling loss journey. Moreover, Ryan stressed that leadership is about setting a clear vision for the future and guiding people to achieve it. It also involves understanding oneself and the organization as a whole. Are entrepreneurs born or made? It can be a combination of both. Some of you might have a distant memory of your younger self mowing the lawn, selling some cookies or lemonades, or shoveling pathways to earn a few bucks. Out of our young mind's understanding, these little things are acts of entrepreneurship. As we grow older and gain knowledge, we may pursue further studies and hone our skills. Can you be an entrepreneur with a purpose in mind? Definitely YES! This is what PoP's guest, Ryan Allis, is all about. Ryan has demonstrated a keen interest in business ventures from an early age -- he has done landscaping for a local church, set up a computer business, and become a web designer. And as Ryan went to university, he explored more areas and met new people, and this is where he recognized the endless possibilities and opportunities ahead of him. Ryan is now the Chairman of Hive. His purpose on this planet is to build a global community of leaders committed to creating a better world. He was previously a technology entrepreneur and was CEO and Co-founder of iContact and led the company with 300 employees, 70,000 customers, and $50M in annual sales. What are your current strengths? What areas in your life are you lacking? Are you working towards becoming a better version of yourself? Do you believe you have the power to make a difference? As Leo talked about peer groups in the previous episode, he now emphasizes that it may take an entire team and a collective effort to get things done but the power of WE actually starts with ME. Yes, it begins with YOU! It is how you speak out, learn, and grow from your mistakes that make the difference. As the interview on The Power of CEO Peer Advisory Groups and How It Can Make a Difference in Your Organization ends, Leo also talks about more of entrepreneurship and his bigger visions of the future. Are you a fan of any team sports? Perhaps you have already watched one of the NBA games, or maybe a 90-minute football game in FIFA. What do you think makes a champion team? Is it the “superstar” players? Or have you been part of a sports team, a school club, a group project, or volunteer work? Do you remember what it felt like working with a team? The saying “two is better than one” perfectly describes what it means to be in a group. Working together with your peers makes the work more efficient and effective. To top that, collaborating with other individuals gives you different perspectives and ideas that you might never think of yourself. But have you ever wondered how teams effectively work in organizations with thousands of employees? In this episode of People of Purpose, Tanur Badgley had the chance to sit with Leo Bottary, the founder and managing partner of Peernovation, LLC. Leo is the award-winning author of three books, including Peernovation: What Peer Advisory Groups Can Teach Us About Building High Performing Teams (2020). He is also a keynote speaker, workshop facilitator, podcaster, Rutgers University adjunct professor, and CEOWORLD Magazine Advisory Board Member and Opinion Columnist. On one of her travels after she graduated high school, Carolin Zeitler met a woman who studied dance therapy. When she heard the term, she knew this was what she needed to study. A couple of years later, she started to study dance therapy. The training did so much for her and her personal development and for that alone it was worth doing. She then became an instructor and a member of the board of examiners at the dance therapy institute, where they developed training for coaches who would use movement and expression as two of their main tools in coaching. Later in Qatar, she built a communication coaching company, as well as a women’s empowerment initiative from scratch. They built a community, offered year-round events, like workshops, masterminds, and smaller conferences to keep the How Women Work (HWW) community engaged. She then moved to a little island where she's been living her purpose in smaller ways by giving workshops at festivals, coaching one-to-one clients, ghostwriting books for entrepreneurs. Recently she's gotten involved in the Gaianet project, which has given her a chance to discover new ways of working together and organizing a company. Listen as we talk about:
Ellen Shane was originally from Montreal, Canada. She moved to Los Angeles in 1996, just before the birth of her third child, Emily, in July 1996. Emily's tragic murder at the age of 13 in April 2010 changed her life - and that of her family - forever. Emily was in 8th grade and in middle school when she was killed. They created the 501(c)3 nonprofit charity that bears her name very soon afterward. Initially, it was a site where people logged good deeds performed in Emily’s memory to honor her persona. After two years of enduring the court system regarding the homicide, she felt compelled to do more to honor her memory and help others. Emily struggled academically due to dyslexia and processing issues. She fell in a “grey” area, not needing or even qualifying for any type of special education, yet facing challenges for her knowledge and ability to be reflected in her academic performance. Ellen had worked with her for many years, but starting in middle school, that became a less than harmonious arrangement. Children in middle school are at the age of shifting from their parents as being the major influence in their lives, to their peers. Emily wanted to be independent and resented my constant questioning and help - it became a battle. It was her husband who observed that while she could help her with her academic difficulties, the result by 8th grade was major disharmony. Her husband wisely told her to go back to being Emily’s mother - not her tutor and constant force of focusing on her homework, grades, etc. They turned to outside help. After experimenting (hiring very experienced teachers, educational therapists), the surprising result was that she performed the best with university students. It became clear why; they are young, and a middle schooler can easily relate to them. Also, there is a comfort level. Rather than someone older, who is perceived as an authoritarian figure, a university student is at an age to which a middle schooler can easily relate to. Besides, they make ideal role models, as they are in university. Ellen's experience with Emily, in which she learned firsthand that there is nothing in the school system to address children who fit her profile (a middle school student in the mainstream classroom who risks academic failure) led her to be clear on what she could do. She created the SEA (Successful Educational Achievement) Program to support those children who risked failure in the mainstream middle school classroom like Emily with the type of support they specifically needed to perform to their best academic ability. Unlike Emily, the SEA Program is solely available to those students who could not otherwise afford the type of intensive and individualized academic tutoring, and mentorship SEA provides. Ellen teamed up with a middle school teacher who had taught for over 40 years, and he helped her put the Program together. She brought her perspective as a parent; he, as an experienced educator. She decided to only focus on middle school-aged children, not only because Emily was in middle school, but because it is a critical time to “catch” those students who “don’t fit the mold” and help set them on the path to success. If a child is below grade level in one or more subjects or is lost in math, for example, addressing the issue and offering solutions are far better than having them pushed ahead to high school when they would be truly lost. Not only does SEA allow students to have the support necessary in the subjects in which they are failing or truly struggling, the vetted and trained mentor/tutors also focus on two key areas: organizational skills and study skills. The only “cost” of participation: each child must perform one good deed or act of kindness for another, and it must be entered on our website. It is important to note that SEA hires mostly university students or recent grads. They provide a source of meaningful employment. In addition to the SEA Program, she has a private practice for grief support. Ellen is not formally credentialed but studied grief extensively and took a course for practitioners with David Kessler (a known “grief guru”). Also - she has written a children’s book, a true story titled “Emily’s Gift: The True Story of Sherlock and Jackson”. It is the first in a series of true stories about their dogs. She has won several awards for her work with the SEA Program. While the creation of SEA was a way to cope with Emily’s death by being proactive, and she loves that their work and mission is all in her memory, what drives her now are the results. There is nothing more rewarding than giving a child the opportunity for a brighter future. The results of SEA motivates Ellen to continue - and ideally expand (they just need the resources to do so). Two of the awards she has received that are of note: A Lifetime Achievement Award from President Obama in 2015, and A Malibu Times Citizen of the Year Award in 2013.
