Hoy podréis escuchar a Hole, Lucinda Williams, Liz Phair, Sleater Kinney, Patti Smith, Larkin Poe, Dream Wife, L7, The Creepshow, The Muffs, The Donnas, Juliette and the Licks, Yeah Yeah Yeahs... y muchas más. Chad Draizin of Portland’s 50 Licks sold his first scoop of ice cream in 2009 at a street fair. After several years of pop-up events and selling to local grocery stores, he opened his first brick-and-mortar shop in 2013 in the Clinton Street neighborhood, but it was in 2017 that Draizin says his business transformed with the opening of the E. Burnside & 28th location - on a busy corner near dozens of restaurants and a movie theater right across the street. Business boomed, and he was able to open another location in Northwest. That’s why the fire in May 2024, which consumed the inside of the historic building, was so devastating. But Draizin managed to keep the other stores going and create a pop-up location at Washington Square Mall. He joins us to share what recovery over the last year has looked like, and his hopes for getting back into his dream location on Burnside.
Was eine Gelegenheit. Micha und ich lauschten begeistert, was der Meister zu erzählen hatte... if this were a real call-in show, an all-too obvious topic for discussion might be "who is the worst live band you've ever seen?" I mean, for there are some all-too obvious candidates (Sump, Juliette Lewis & The Licks, Quiet Company, Ween) however what does it mean if you never thought the band in question was any good to begin with? How can you properly measure a performance if you're already disinclined to like the material or the performers?so maybe the real worst show you've ever seen is someone you otherwise respected or liked who simply shit the bed. Onstage (or in bed). This would be a great topic for this week's show except a) we don't have the technological know-how to take calls for a prerecorded show and b) I really cannot stand the sound of anyone else's voice besides my own. SO YOU'RE JUST GONNA HAVE TO HASH IT OUT IN THE COMMENTS (again). (above : Anti-Nowhere League, best set I ever saw by a genuinely awful band - potential topic for a future episode)
Welcome to the latest Lou Volpe's Jazz Cast featuring new riffs, runs, rhythms & harmony. Our feature song this week is called "THE ROAD TO YOU". We think you'll like it! L is for Ligtnin' (and) Licks. Ladies Love Loud Losers, listen...In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For the past six decades, artists the world over in every artistic medium have used Eno's strategy while attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2025, lazy, lackluster yet somehow still award-winning* hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential theme of their upcoming forty-third episode. Together, they decided... to default back to the alphabet. Because they have a reasonably solid grasp of the alphabet and how it works. Mikael Backman joins me on episode 130.Mikael is from Sweden where he started playing blues harmonica, recording six albums with the band Ramblin' Minds. He then joined the band John Henry. Initially a bluegrass band, they went on to play country, honky tonk and western swing. Mikael is truly a doctor of the harmonica, having conducted various academic studies with the harmonica at center stage, as part of his work at the Piteå School of Music. One of these resulted in a music thesis on how practicing the chromatic and diatonic harmonicas can improve the playing of both. Mikael has also recently completed a PhD where he wrote a doctoral thesis on country harmonica, which included an article and recording session with the legendary Charlie McCoy.Links:Website: https://harpatwork.com/John Henry band: www.johnhenry.nuMike Caldwell playing Roly Poly: https://soundcloud.com/mike-caldwell-2/roly-polyMikael's recordings on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/07qOtgwTkCHlzYgx6P8Goh?si=d7e648990fd9420bOne Lick - Two Harps: chromatic / diatonic: https://tinyurl.com/yfnh9fcvPhD thesis My Bag of Licks: https://tinyurl.com/mybagoflicksArticle on Charlie McCoy: https://www.internationalcountrymusic.org/_files/ugd/83ada7_e189b0dca9ad431dbc743cea3ffd5a88.pdfCharlie McCoy Transcriptions link: https://www.researchcatalogue.net/profile/show-exposition?exposition=1510243Neil's harmonica transcriptions: https://www.harptranscripts.co.uk/Videos:Same lick on chromatic and diatonic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIcnyGTtv6AMikael talks through what he plays on Oklahoma song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJeskt_Vo1UAmazing Grace: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h04Q9k6eEokPodcast website:https://www.harmonicahappyhour.comDonations:If you want to make a voluntary donation to help support the running costs of the podcast then please use this link (or visit the podcast website link above):https://paypal.me/harmonicahappyhour?locale.x=en_GBSpotify Playlist: Also check out the Spotify Playlist, which contains most of the songs discussed in the podcast:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5QC6RF2VTfs4iPuasJBqwT?si=M-j3IkiISeefhR7ybm9qIQPodcast sponsors:This podcast is sponsored by SEYDEL harmonicas - visit the oldest harmonica factory in the world at www.seydel1847.com or on Facebook or Instagram at SEYDEL HARMONICAS--------------------------------Blue Moon Harmonicas: https://bluemoonharmonicas.comSupport the show

On this week's show, the hosts begin by asking the question: What even is Garfield? Jim Davis' overfed, Monday-hating (even though he's jobless) cultural figure first appeared in comic strips in the late 1970s, and since then, has been surprisingly resilient, most recently conquering the summer box-office with The Garfield Movie. But who is Garfield, and more perhaps more importantly, why is he a thing? To answer these questions, each host watched (or endured) a different Garfield entity, including Garfield: The Movie (2004), Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties (2006), and the latest film starring Chris Pratt as the titular cat. Then, the three discuss suspense and its nature in relation to fiction, inspired by Kathryn Schulz's essay for The New Yorker, “The Secrets of Suspense.” It's a curious, fantastic essay that questions the human impulse to know what happens next. Finally, it's a visit from the Gabfest's oldest and closest Friend of the Pod, June Thomas, who speaks with the panel about her essential new book, A Place of Our Own: Six Spaces That Shaped Queer Women's Culture. In the exclusive slate Plus segment, the hosts answer a listener question from Evana: “What is a cultural reference that really bugs Steve/Julia/Dana when they see/hear it being misused or misinterpreted?” We're taking submissions for Summer Strut 2024!
