Professionally he's my enemy. Lucky this is an amateur podcast! Gavin has been one of the most actively supportive friends of this podcast for a number of years, so it's great to finally have him on. I mean sure, he buggered up the episode structure by adding his songs to the Ever-growing Playlist of Joy before the half way point, but I can forgive it. Gav plays with creativity every single day. Has turned what is considered fun in to successful professional career and some entertaining hobbies, including a new podcast of his own - The Empty Page. I hope this inspires you to dive in to some of your own. Search Kids Love Balloons on Spotify to find the playlist alongside all other episodes!

Adventures in gallivanting! Back for another episode and this one runs deep. I always admire the guts it takes to travel across the seas and chase a dream inside you... taking on all the risks... what if it doesn't work? Passion leads us to incredible places.Tamara (HANSSØN) is an Australian who has now lived in New York for 9 years, busy writing her second album, while navigating this year of pandemic, protests and all sorts of associated change. Family relationships. Work. Travel. All our plans are cooked - how is it affecting your mindset? I love that we spoke meaningfully on these matters, and found tangents in to TV shows Who Dares Wins, Gladiators and The Extraordinary. It sounds like we're lifelong mates having a late night D&M... yet we'd never held a conversation before. It's an episode that makes me feel good about making this podcast. That it's worthwhile and there are stories that are better off shared and listened to. Plus there's some love for Pluto! Planet or not, it still exists and still kicks arse. We hear insights in to the creation of Play School and also the spin off Art Time. "Those kids were not thinking at all. Their imaginations literally had no bounds. It was the best reminder ever, because they came up with the most amazing things..."The art of being in the moment. Taking time to find that. I need to work on clearing my mind and finding presence. Thank you so much Zindzi for sharing so much of your wisdom and experience. "Music is still a space where... I find myself getting more and more free; but I'm not fully free, yet." The song choices are top shelf. I give a chef's kiss which I trust you can visualize. If you smile, learn or discover anything from listening to this, please let me know. Have a great one.

Josh even helped me get this podcast up and running when I had no idea what as RSS feed was 6 years ago. One of the good dudes. He's committed his efforts into creating positive memories for people on one of their milestone days - their wedding ceremony. Shattering the rule book, encouraging rebellion, traveling the world doing so. Even though he added Nickelback to the Ever-growing Playlist of Joy, I'll forgive him, because he's followed the other rules of the podcast. "Why wouldn't I have a space band? And give it a red hot crack?" Zoë's attitude is precisely what I want to learn about with this podcast. She lives her life diving in to the child-like mindset of enjoying herself, channeling happiness, meditating on joy. Being present. It was fascinating spending time on the phone with her and I hope to make regular, positive change from her lessons. The way Zoë switched the mundane chore of balancing spreadsheets in to a detective-like investigation adventure is just magic. The type of magic us adults forget we are capable of. "It's so easy to get stuck on autopilot and then you'll probably like wake up and realize that you've missed your whole life". PLAY is the one word answer. A man integrally responsible for many moments of happiness in my life, and that of hundreds and thousands of others around the world. The episode begins very reflective and sober, then works in to the excitement of songwriting, performing, and the energy between performers and audience that really creates an undeniable feeling. Charlie and the War Against the Grannies was released last year; the next in the series, Charlie and the Karaoke Cockroaches, is released on June 27th. I'm fascinated with the advice he received while learning to write this style: to find your inner 12 year old. The ability to channel your younger self is something I hold in high regard and is potentially the key to creating a smile, a song, or in Alan's case, a series of novels!Alan still listens to new music on a very regular basis and you may be surprised with the songs and artists he mentions. Twice Emmy-nominated Loyiso Gola is one of the first class calibre of talents who have travelled here this year, performing his show Dude, Where's My Lion? His International Emmy noms stem from the South African show Late Nite News, a satirical take on politics in the ilk of The Daily Show or The Weekly with Charlie Pickering (where Loyiso has been a regular correspondent).I love this episode for many reasons. Firstly - his immediate answer to "what makes you happy?" is deliberate and profound. Each guest has different answers to this question and different interpretations of what the question actually is. None of these are wrong. But Loyiso's vibe makes plenty of sense.Secondly - he flat out refused to play along with the second rule of my podcast and makes no apologies. I don't even mind! It's amazing to speak with a man of Loyiso's perspective. At just 33 years of age, this dude is seriously wise."The sooner you realise that material things are not gonna make you happy...the closer you are to understanding the theory that I'm trying to present."This podcast isn't stand-up comedy, but trust me when I recommend his MICF show to you! OK so I couldn't resist using a TISM reference in my intro, despite the language being filthy, and now I'm caught somewhere in between "that's a great dad joke" or "why did you swear like that you buffoon". TISM was one of Australia's most iconic and entertaining bands and when a song title such as "I might be a ..." exists, the opportunity to use it contextually was too rare to resist.Nevertheless. Former member Damian Cowell popped around to my place and we had a great yarn for a couple of hours. He's now focused on Damian Cowell's Disco Machine - a new album to be released February 20 and subsequent shows which seem basically unmissable. Just by reading the band name you can sense the sheer fun this project exudes. It's about "giving in to the simple joys of my own twisted version of fun dance music". The album is titled Get Yer Dag On. The gist is: What a shit world we're living in - let's boogie! So we discuss the musical influences of the project, the pleasures of choreography, how his career developed over the years and as it happens, plenty of life lessons pop up. He airs concern that we ventured in to "some sort of self-help" thing and if that element is there, I don't mind too much. Hahaha this nugget of wisdom does spring from the chat so thanks Damian for the inspiration and comfort! We can all garner some hope. DAILY DISAPPOINTMENT is beneficial and make you a richer, fuller person. Try things and fail. Feel emotionally vulnerable and experience suffering. It all helps in the long run, keeps us grounded, teaches us lessons, and as long as we keep recognising this we can stay on top and not let the disappointment defeat us. For the most part though I just hope you have a dance or a sing today and I hope it makes you smile!Damian is the first ARIA winner to add songs to Ever-growing Playlist of Joy and look out - they might not be what you expect!See you on social media @TheSongNerd!

"A girlfriend once dumped me because she didn't like how enthusiastic I was about..."I love this quote from Gideon. This level of enthusiasm, as long as it's not criminal behaviour of course, should be celebrated! Sharing your enthusiasm and is the reason for this podcast and Gideon Haigh is as passionate as they come. Once the footy season ends, the Australian sporting focus turns pretty sharply straight on to cricket! I love this time of year. The smell of fresh cut grass, the extra daylight hours, and people everywhere wearing all white clothes that will, by days end, be covered in red, green, brown and who knows what other coloured stains. No man articulates everything cricket means than Gideon Haigh. A master of the English language - what blokes drinking at the bar may only exclaim as "GOT HIM! YES!", Gideon is able to contextualise and describe that moment's significance in far greater detail with supreme use of words. His latest book, Stroke of Genius, investigates the myth behind Australian cricketer Victor Trumper - and the shot that changed cricket. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Gideon's managed to get 315 pages from this one. Stroke of Genius was launched at Gideon's cricket club, Yarras, a few days after recording this. Tim Rogers of You Am I fame was on hand to lead the launch and had some real inspiring words to say. In this photo, Tim is imitating the viper-like bowling pose of the great Dennis Lillee.Gideon pains to be thought of as simply a cricket writer, but 21 of his books have been somehow related to cricket! He explains this in our chat.  "I think it changes your relationship to something when you rely on it for your livelihood. I always want cricket to be something that I go back to for solace and reinforcement and joy and satisfaction; not simply because it pays the bills." His principals are spot on.In this chat I'm reminded of my own passion for cricket. The summers spent glued to radio commentary outside or the TV inside. Playing. Watching my dad play and learning how to score. Playing and not really excelling but still loving it. Being part of a community, a club and an association of similar clubs. Contemplating history. Seeing my name on honour boards. Inspiring my own travel to the West Indies.Of course we have a quick preview of the upcoming Australian summer and what we can expect from our Test opponents, South Africa & Pakistan. When asked to name three songs that make him happy, "I'm not sure about joy..." was his initial response, but the songs he chose bring feelings of excitement, vitality, enthusiasm and other fantastic reactions. When I stopped the podcast recording, Gideon and I continued chatting. He took out his ipod and scrolled through the entire menu, naming every artist on it. We discussed many, I wrote many down of who I wasn't familiar with, and have been schooling myself deep into the world of post-punk born and spread from the second half of the 1970s. In that world, Gideon definitely out nerds me. The passion was and is infectious. What caught my surprise was Gideon's passion for music! The quote at the top of this page was related to his love of music. "If someone stole my ipod it would be of no use to them whatsoever; it's so totally contoured to the interior of my head."Music, writing and sport all things we discuss in great detail and I really enjoyed recording this episode - I hope you also do. While there, why not catch up with an old mate of mine, shoot the breeze and record it?So at the time of recording, the football matches hadn't happened yet. Listening to this, you hear me unaware that the Bulldogs would not only go on to win that match in Sydney, but the Grand Final the following week, becoming the AFL Premiers for the first time in 62 years. That relates to my happiness though (I'm pretty bloody happy right now) - here are a few details about my guest.Brooklyn Ross is the newsreader for The Kyle & Jackie O Show on KIIS 106.5 in Sydney. We met while he was on work experience at Power FM Bega more than 10 years ago and it's a delight to see his career grow so successfully. He also runs what's fast becoming an empire of online radio stations. What started as a hobby has become a serious business and his boldness and bravery are paying great dividends. Before it was politically fashionable, Brooklyn shared his sexuality on Sydney radio station The Edge and played a major role developing a publicity campaign for marriage equality. He's not phased at all with sharing himself, creating things, and bracing for any consequences. I hope you like his attitudes, and the songs he's added to the Ever-growing Playlist of Joy!https://play.spotify.com/user/thesongnerd/playlist/1PjMUX8R9cwbvl62O0HFpT Hit me up on any social media @TheSongNerd where I'm happy to discuss the podcast or topically this weekend, the FOOTY!!!

Getting more analytical in this episode, chatting with a woman who dedicates each day to understanding happiness and the effects it has on each of us. Professor Lea Waters has spent over 20 years working at Melbourne University, in recent years focusing on Positive Psychology - instrumental in establishing the Centre for Positive Psychology. So what has she learned and what is she working on that can be shared with us on Kids Love Balloons?Listen in and discover the personal struggles that Lea has battled and continues to battle. It's not all skittles and rainbows but I really hope it can help you smile today!"I don't even think I'm a very courageous person to be honest but I just drew on my courage. And all the times I got knocked back...all of those struggles along the way, they definitely knocked me down but I just got back up again and said 'OK well this just has to happen and so I just have to be brave'". This is a quote that we can all identify with and hopefully all channel when the time is right in our lives. In 2015, Lea was listed as one of 100 Women of Influence in Australia - an honour that she attributes as a tick for Positive Psychology and scientific inquiry in to how it is that we increase happiness and well-being in people. It's interesting to hear in this chat, how much negativity was thrown her way as she set about this path!"...having the understanding that we can make the most of our suffering, we can grow and learn from it, but ultimately we're here to kind of transcend that."I'd love to hear your feedback on this one. Feel free to share! The Ever-growing Playlist of Joy just became three songs happier.

With each passing year it seems Australia's connection with the Eurovision Song Contest grows and grows. Mine too. Yesterday I met and had a lovely chat with a former finalist in the contest and couldn't be happier.Danica Radojicic, better known as Nina, represented Serbia in 2011 with the ultra-joyous song Čaroban (which translates to Magical). Amongst my friends, that's one of our all-time favourite Eurovision songs! Add to this story that Nina moved from Belgrade to Melbourne with her partner, where they are completing their own PhDs. That's an epic adventure in itself. Moving is tough, especially internationally, and she's juggling her life's passions including her music, studies and distance from her family back home in Serbia.Nina's courage, work-ethic and positive attitude are totally inspiring! As she sets out to achieve her many dreams, I wish her all the very best.Check out the Ever-growing Playlist of Joy which now contains another three happiness-delivering songs!(Two episodes in a row feature Eurovision chatter. While I would usually keep a diverse range of topics show to show, this is the way the cards have landed and I make no apologies! I hope you enjoy it.)

If my memory is on point, Jason-Scott Watkins and I first connected while live-tweeting some Eurovision action. That makes me happy. The Eurovision Song Contest, the live-tweeting, and thinking about the kindred spirits I've met online who have as much fun with it as I do.Jason's food blog Don't Boil the Sauce has been running for many years, featuring all sorts of creative dishes from around the world. At times he's even combined his cooking with the Eurovision theme, hosting competitions and votes to see which comes out on top! It's fun and educational! We discuss more about that in the podcast. Other nuggets of wisdom we discover:"If it doesn’t hurt anyone, do it until someone says stop.""I think we get in our own way of happiness... so just get out of the way and let it happen""You can be an arsehole to me, but you know what? I’m gonna fight you with the power of dance"And he lays the smack down to our previous guests, naming Julia Zemiro in particular. I apologise within 90 seconds of this episode and by the conclusion, I receive a heated "f*** you!" (my first and hopefully not last in this podcast series). This in no way fairly demonstrates what a lovely, honest, meaningful discussion I had with Melbourne radio personality and dead set legend, Jo Stanley. From the time I ask "what makes you happy?" and she answers "not thinking about what makes me happy", I know we're on a winner. It's thinking that causes much of the anxiety we face day to day, and learning how to react to our own thoughts is one of the keys to leading a, if not necessarily happy, peacefullife. We get down to the very nature of why I started this podcast in relation to her seven year old daughter, Willow, and how free children are from the judgement, criticism and second-guessing that grows as we "mature" in to adults. This chat with Jo is ultimately heartfelt and true. She says to me "When I speak like that, I wonder whether I sound like a crazy person...did it make sense?" It's totally healthy to speak like this and I feel more people would benefit from asking the questions we dissect here at my humble kitchen table. She champions some incredible apps to help with meditation and mindfulness, Smiling Mind and Headspace which are definitely worth checking out.And there's laughter aplenty. There's multiple mentions of cake and wine. I get sworn at. It's fun. Please enjoy. Whether you think we're nuts or great or perhaps both, please comment here or on all the socials! I'd love to know how you reacted.Catch up with Jo's radio work here and her other projects here. What makes you happy?Thank you for finding this site and thank you for listening!!

I will not tire of listening to this episode. On June 19th this year, my wife and I made our way to Federation Square to see some live music from acts we love - Felix Riebl and The Smith Street Band. Earlier, Tripod and Waleed Aly's Robot Child had performed. It was an event to launch Refugee Week and the MC was Osamah Sami. After hearing him speak for just a few minutes on stage, I knew I would invite him to the podcast. Not only for his wit and humour, but his unique story which has seen much suffering but also fantastic success. A refugee who moves to Australia as a teenager knowing no English couldn't possibly win literary & acting awards twenty years later?? What amazing things to do in your third language! If you put your heart & soul in to anything, the goal is possible. He knows the English language better than those who've used it their entire lives. Listening to this you'll hear remarkable poetry, a few whole-hearted f bombs, real laughter, stories of war, families divided and reunited, sporting triumph, singing... think about what living in your country means to you and wonder what it would be like if you happened to be born elsewhere. How would life be different? How would your perspectives shift? This chat has the full spectrum. The episode is the longest so far in this series and I hope you can get through the whole thing - even if you hit pause and come back! I didn't anticipate adding any national anthem to the Ever-growing Playlist of Joy, but I think it's pretty cool to have one there now, especially after hearing some of Osamah's story. Delivering the nightly news to Melbourne since 1998, and as understudy for a further 20 years prior, he has been welcomed in to family homes as a regular face and trusted friend across multiple generations.Pete’s reputation is not just for delivering reliable news. It’s based on his character. Affable, joyous, friendly, honest, GENUINE. Through the TV, he just seems like a person you’d love to have a cuppa with. Everyone I’ve spoken with who has met him has backed this up.I can guarantee that in person, this is true even more-so. We had a great afternoon at 9’s new Melbourne studios and it was fantastic to get to know the man I’ve been familiar with for decades, first via the screen in my parents’ living room. You’ll tell from this chat that he is really genuinely positive. No matter what Rob Gell, Livinia Nixon or any other weather presenter forecasts that night, I get the feeling Pete will always see the outlook as sunny! His passion for the things he loves is infectious.“It’s a hoot!” As we add songs to the Ever-growing Playlist of Joy, Pete scrolls through his phone to find the answers and even cheekily plays a short sample. Leila is understanding that hers is a powerful voice that can be a shining example to generations of Australians.Another guest who opened up on her many setbacks and challenges she has bravely overcome, Leila’s positive spirit ensures she and many others learn from these with optimism and pride.“Lots of doors and lots of opportunities open for people and sometimes you need to step through that door. Fear is normal, everyone fears something and everyone fears change in some way, shape or form. Taking that step in to that unknown and all of a sudden you’ve got more opportunities that come out of that one step. The fact that I said yes to Marngrook at 19 years old has allowed me to do so many things up to now. Just because of that one moment in time. I could’ve said no and my life would be completely different to what it is now.”Learn more about Deadly Sista Girlz and Marngrook here. Not only do we support the same football team and graduated from the same high school, but also sang in the same children’s choir. Some of the first music I ever loved in my life was that of Peter Combe. My parents purchased Toffee Apple on vinyl before I was in school. I still love many songs on that record today. In the last three days I’ve both seen Peter live in concert and now spoken with him, face to face, on the virtues of happiness. It’s a brief chat, but it’s insightful. Peter’s most well known songs are targeted towards children. Over time these children grow up, and I was one of many who was able to have a couple of beers whilst dancing and singing away with songs such as Spaghetti Bolognese and Newspaper Mama.I was fascinated to hear his thoughts on happiness and how that of kids differs to that of adults. We talk songwriting, war and a whole lot more. Join us!Recorded in the foyer of the bustling Hawthorn Town Hall, I hope you perceive the cafe background ambience as pleasant! I noticed that for the second time in three episodes I’ve mentioned Andrew Bolt…….I can’t promise that it won’t happen again but it has been noted!!!The folk singers of the sixties such as Peter Paul & Mary, Simon & Garfunkel form the core of Peter’s musical influences and you’ll catch their works in the updated Ever-growing Playlist of Joy, which you can follow on Spotify.

Playing music is still one of them, but the pressure of full time work is no longer a stress! We discuss much, including a few of the great people he spends time with that fill his life with joy. He’s passionate about good food and red wine (I mean, who isn’t? But do you marinate tofu??) There are some great anecdotes from the Frenzal days, too.We muse over how important it is to remember that everyone has different life experiences, everyone has different points of view, and basically at the end of the day it’s important to treat everyone with respect, regardless of whether or not you agree with their ideology. One example of this is a speech he once gave titled:“Really nice meat eaters VS arsehole vegetarians: understanding the former to avoid becoming the latter”.He does call me a “North Queensland prick”, but I’m not sure I’ll ever live up there again. I miss that place but “Inner-city prick” works fine for me just at the moment. If you’re offended by the word prick, don’t listen to the second half
