Do you really know?
Is the gut really our "second brain"?

You have surely felt butterflies in your stomach before a big event or had a ‘gut' feeling about something. You might even say you need to ‘digest' some big news. Our stomach is sometimes dubbed the ‘second brain' and it's more than just a metaphor.   The term gained traction in the West in 1999, thanks to Dr. Michael Gershon's book “The Second Brain.” However, the concept isn't new. Ayurvedic medicine, an ancient Indian healing system, has recognized the gut-brain connection for thousands of years. In Ayurveda, the digestive system and the mind are intertwined; a disturbance in one affects the other. This link is embodied in the concept of Agni, or ‘digestive fire,' which pertains to both physical digestion and the processing of emotions and thoughts. Nourishing our Agni with the right foods can make us feel better, both physically and mentally. Where did this idea originate? Is there scientific backing for this brain-gut connection? Can taking care of our gut improve our mental well-being?  In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! To listen to the last episodes, you can click here: Is taking milk with coffee good for you? Today, we are following up on seasonal cleansing, exploring the seasonal shift into spring, known as RituCharya. In this episode, we dive into how RituCharya impacts the body and share Ayurvedic insights on maintaining and optimizing your health and thriving throughout the shift. Stay tuned to learn what happens to the body as we transition from winter to spring. You will certainly not want to miss this!Spring and Ayurvedic BalanceIn Ayurveda, spring is considered a time of renewal and cleansing, a season associated with the air and ether elements. These elements are cool, light, and dry, which can bring about an imbalance of vatadosha (air and ether), leading to dryness, restlessness, and feeling ungrounded. Focus on practices and foods that nourish and ground the body during this time. How Seasonal Changes Affect the BodyOur bodies change as the seasons shift from the heavier, cooler winter months to lighter, warmer spring days. In Ayurveda, this is a time for detoxification and replenishment, as the accumulated toxins (ama) that build up in the body during the colder months are ready to be flushed out. This is also when the digestive fire (agni) can become sluggish, so reset and enhance the digestive system to promote balance. What to Eat and Avoid in SpringDuring spring, choose foods that are light, fresh, and easy to digest to support detoxification. Incorporate bitter, astringent, and pungent tastes in your meals to balance any excess kapha (earth and water) that may accumulate during this time. Food Recommendations for Spring:Consume: Light grains (quinoa, barley), leafy greens, sprouts, and seasonal vegetables like asparagus, artichokes, and carrots. These foods help support the digestive process and clear excess mucus or congestion.Avoid: Heavy, oily, and rich foods, as well as dairy and sugary foods, which can aggravate kapha and hinder detoxification.Hydration: Drinking warm water with lemon and herbal teas, such as ginger or peppermint, can help stimulate digestion and cleanse the body.Movement and DetoxificationPhysical activity is essential in spring to help the body release toxins and increase circulation. Ayurvedic practices suggest regular, gentle exercises that promote flexibility and detoxification, like yoga, walking, or swimming. The Spiritual ConnectionSpring is also a time to connect spiritually with nature. In Ayurveda, it is believed that the energy of the earth and the cosmos influences our internal balance. Spending time outdoors, meditating, or practicing mindful breathing exercises can help you reconnect with yourself and the environment around you, as those can help calm the restless mind and restore inner harmony.Community CleanseThe community cleanse spans 10 days. Participants begin with three days of eliminating inflammatory foods like coffee, alcohol, and peanut butter. They then move to only kitchari for five days and end with a reintegration phase where regular foods are slowly reintroduced. The community cleanse helps individuals understand how their bodies react to cleansing and adapt accordingly.Benefits and Body TherapiesThe spring cleanse provides a foundation for transitioning to a more balanced spring diet with lighter vegetables. People going through the cleanse usually experience relief from any digestive issues. Apart from diet, participants often engage in body therapies, like oil massages and invigorating exercises, to help their bodies emerge naturally into spring. Important Considerations for CleansingCleansing is not appropriate during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or recovery from illness or injury, as...

Live from New York, it's Ojas Oasis. Today, Sasha and Erin got to chat in-person to deep dive into the second chakra, Svadhistana, located at the sacrum above the Muladhara, which abides in the tail bone or coccyx. The sacrum is a large, triangular bone at the base of the spine that connects to the pelvis and is made up of five fused vertebrae, numbered S-1 to S-5. Now that we know where it lives, lets talk about what it means. Svadhistana translates as “the seat of taste/desire.” “Swa means taste, and “Stana” means abode or seat. It represents the Water element, relates to the physical reproductive organs and brings Prana to the reproductive system. This is where our desire comes from - for enjoyment, pleasure, sexuality, creativity and flow. Desire is a fascinating thing. And an important thing at that, as far our basic evolution and survival go. But craving and aversion, become a relentless assault on the present moment if we fail to understand and master the nature of it. Aversion is essentially Anxiety, Resentment, Regret, All Addiction, Self-Hatred, all sense of Lack, the gap between who you are and who you want to be, what you have and what you want to have.Desire is not the actual problem. Because we aren't actually looking for a “thing.” We are looking for “the experience of the thing, the feeling of the thing.” That is the first level of balancing this chakra, or subtle energy center: Distinguishing what it is we ultimately truly Desire. In Ayurveda, it is important to not suppress Desire. In Yoga, it is important to refine the experiencer, or the one experiencing Desire, so that the Desire becomes refined. As our Ayurvedic habits and Yoga practice deepens, toxic habits fall away, including toxic desires. And this is because as our human system becomes balanced, the tendencies of imbalance heal into harmonious tendencies. This is a whole nother level of healing. When our Svadhistana is balanced, there is an energy of abundance, and understanding of timing. When imbalanced, there is guilt, self-hatred, a state of wanting or lack, self-harming, drama, holding of childhood issues, traumas, and sexual scarring, and a tamasic level of desire to relate but an inability to relate to anyone. Since our present relationships are all informed by our past, we must free ourselves from incorrect, unrefined information in our system. We must clean this chakra by learning how to activate it. Otherwise, Fear will show up to sabotage what it is we truly want. Send us a textSupport the showTo learn more about us, please visit www.OjasOasis.com Connect with us @ojasoasis on Instagram

Welcome back to Season 6 of Ojas Oasis! We are so happy to be back in our soul home of Mama India, held by the angelic peaks and valleys of her Himalayan Mountains. We took a long pause to honor a deeply transformative process, which we are happy to share a bit about as we continue to integrate. And the fact that we get to share our experience of Vedic and Yogic Knowledge and Wisdom straight from the source, is crazy grace. Today, we also begin peeling back the 5 Koshas. The Sanskrit word “kosha” means covering, layer, or sheath. Starting from the outermost layer and moving inward to the core of the true self, each kosha comprises increasingly more subtle energy. From the physical body to the breath body, mental body, wisdom body, and finally, to our very core: the bliss body. In Ayurveda, we focus on strengthening, balancing, and preparing the physical body via Ahara/Vihara (diet and lifestyle) so we can build higher levels of energy and expanded awareness. We must carefully consider what we consume, because what we consume, ultimately consumes us. We are not just this physical body, but we need this body. It is a sacred vehicle that consciousness depends on to experience itself. As we venture deeper down the path of Healing with Yoga and Ayurveda, a skilled Ayurvedic Doctor, Yoga Practitioner and Teacher also knows the importance of integrating the more subtle aspects of the body. Because if we don't step outside the lower vibrational layers we identify with, how will we ever truly know who we are? How will we ever experience the truth of why we are here? A deeper level of seeing needs to happen, to deepen our healing and evolution on an individual and collective level.  Send us a textSupport the showTo learn more about us, please visit www.OjasOasis.com Connect with us @ojasoasis on Instagram

Ayurveda & Self-Care: Basic, Simple, Natural Approach To Living

A Quest for Well-Being

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 3, 2024 70:45

— Ayurveda may be the world's oldest continuously practiced health system, dating up to five thousand years ago Ayurveda can be loosely translated as the “science of life.” The word comes from combining "Ayur," meaning life, and "Veda,” meaning knowledge. So Ayurveda literally means "the knowledge of life" —  how to  live in the best possible way. Ayurveda is a very basic, simple, natural approach to living. It is a beautiful combination of oral and written instruction, spirituality, philosophy, mythology, AND  SCIENTIFIC knowledge that has been around for over 5000 years. It is rooted in the oldest spiritual texts of India called the Vedas. These texts (some of which date back to 450-1500 BCE.) are widely considered to be the most ancient  science and address ALL aspects of healing and well-being for both body  and mind. Ayurveda, even though it originated in India, gained traction  and prestige in Sri Lanka, China, Tibet, and Nepal, influencing these  various philosophies and healing traditions. There was a point when Western medicine denounced Ayurveda as inferior when India was  colonized. However, it continued to be practiced under the radar of  colonists in rural areas and monasteries. Ayurveda is making a huge  comeback in India, North America, and other Western countries. We are  now looking to combine the science and technology of traditional Western  medicine with Ayurveda's holistic, preventative healing art. With the  emphasis on prevention and empowering people to have more control over  their health via the choices they make in their everyday lives, Ayurveda  has become a holistic wellness system that is infiltrating the  mainstream, unbeknownst to many. For instance, Kaizer Permanente is  displaying billboards around LA referencing circadian rhythms - how  crazy fantastic is that? Costco did a 2-page layout last summer on  Ayurveda and holistic health. And yes.....they called it by its real name!  Ayurveda and Self-Care go hand and hand!   Valeria interviews Paula Pister  — She is an Ayurvedic Health and Life Coach, Yoga teacher, and busy mom. Her journey began as a young model and actress, where she struggled with self-worth and body image issues. In her 20s, becoming a certified yoga teacher helped Paula appreciate and love her body more, leading her to explore Ayurveda, yoga's sister science. Now, Paula teaches midlife women simple daily and seasonal self-care tools rooted in ancient wisdom and modern habit change science. She is a strong advocate for self-care, aiming to help women overcome the belief that prioritizing themselves is selfish or to feel “guilty about." In Ayurveda, our energy reserves are called “Ojas." Paula emphasizes that without replenishment, this energy depletes, leaving women vulnerable to mental, emotional, and physical imbalances. Having experienced burnout herself, she understands the challenges faced by busy women juggling multiple responsibilities. Growing up without positive self-care role models, Paula learned its importance later in life. Now in her 50s, she is committed to being an exemplary model for her children and helping other midlife women reshape outdated beliefs about self-care, listening to their intuition and reclaiming control of habits that are life-depleting not life-enhancing. Because self-care does NOT come in a one-size-fits all box, a bottle or from Amazon. It takes committing to yourself and deeper desires, being gentle and kind with yourself and understanding that this a journey. Every step along the path is an opportunity for growth, deeper insight and a chance to connect with your inner wisdom (which is ALWAYS guiding you.) Paula stresses that self-care starts with self-worth, setting boundaries, and learning to say “No” (nicely and guilt-free). She believes this approach is not selfish but essential, as a healthy, vibrant, and happy individual better equipped to care for others and show up in the world as your best and most vibrant self.  To learn more about Paula Pister and her work, please visit: https://www.mindbodybright.com/ To learn about the 21-Day Fall Reset and receive a 20% discount use the code: QUEST20 https://www.mindbodybright.com/fallcleanse

I am delighted to have Dr. Claudia Welch joining me as my guest on the podcast today.Shifting Focus on Women's HealthThe conversation on women's health initially focused on external factors. However, there is currently more awareness of the importance of internal nourishment and rest. Rest and nourishment are crucial for maintaining balance with all the external distractions that draw our attention outward. Nurturing inner stability creates ripples of positivity, much like the various cycles of nature. Inner Attention Versus External FocusWe need to focus on our internal motivations rather than our external actions. While actions like cooking or caregiving may seem nourishing, the internal mindset driving those actions is what truly matters. In Ayurveda, nurturing our inner world is essential as it helps reduce the impact of fears and external seductions, allowing for more balanced and grounded lives.Shifting Interests in HealthOver time, there has been a shift from focusing on the biological details of health, like hormones, to a broader view of how people live their lives. According to Eastern philosophy, health imbalances stem from internal belief systems, fears, and seductions. That is why we need to address the root causes of those imbalances rather than focusing on biological symptoms for lasting health.Hormone Management: HRT vs. Bioidentical HormonesClaudia emphasizes the benefits of bioidentical hormones over traditional hormone replacement therapy (HRT), explaining that while lifestyle, diet, and herbal remedies can help with menopausal symptoms like hot flashes and insomnia, they may not offer immediate relief for those with a history of poor health habits. Even though those symptoms are not life-threatening, the stress they cause can have long-term health impacts. If bioidentical hormones are inaccessible, HRT might be an acceptable alternative despite the associated risks. The Uncertainty of Medical ScienceClaudia is skeptical about overly confident medical opinions and encourages everyone to be cautious and self-aware when using hormone therapy. In the decades she spent studying hormones, she learned that there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Stress and Hormonal Imbalance in MidlifeStress, especially during midlife, significantly impacts our hormonal balance. The emotional challenges many women face in their late 40s and 50s, like the fear of aging and death, can amplify stress. The demands of caring for children and aging parents often worsen these hormonal imbalances.Confronting the Fear of DeathReflecting on a personal experience in India, Claudia once believed she did not fear death. However, she felt afraid when she faced the possibility of dying from hepatitis. She feels it is essential for us to intentionally engage with the concept of death as a natural part of life. The Practice of Dying DailyClaudia has come to embrace the idea of dying daily, a practice from various spiritual traditions. That means we need to let go of our professional, personal, or emotional attachments if we want to learn about the impermanence of life. By surrendering to that process, we can reduce our fear of death while supporting our hormonal health.Embracing Loss and Personal TransformationLetting go means accepting that we cannot control everything. As we age, we must make peace with the inevitable losses we will face. Even though the void our losses leave can feel overwhelming, it ultimately leads to transformation and growth.Menopause Support and Facing MortalityClaudia created the Menopause Chronicles, a community to support one another and share experiences for women navigating menopause. She is also excited to...
