La fuerza del destino, ópera en cuatro actos, con música de Giuseppe Verdi (Bussetto, 1813 – Milán, 1901) y libreto de Francesco Maria Piave, se estrenó el 10 de noviembre de 1862 en San Petersburgo. Compuesta por encargo del Teatro Imperial de San Petersburgo, Verdi no quedó demasiado satisfecho del libreto que había escrito Francesco Maria Piave, y encargó la versión definitiva a Antonio Ghislanzoni que se estrenó en febrero de 1869, en la Scala de Milán, y que es la que hoy se representa. El libreto que se basa en la obra teatral “Don Álvaro o la Fuerza del Sino” del literato romántico español Angel de Saavedra, que relata los infortunios de Leonora de Vargas y Don Álvaro; ella es hija del Marqués de Calatrava y él un noble inca. Este último, mata por accidente al padre de Leonora, quien muere maldiciendo a su hija. Desde ahí en adelante, los hechos separan a los amantes. Él adopta una nueva identidad y se enrola en el ejército; ella se retira a vivir a una ermita. De esta obra, que en muchas de sus puestas en escena ha estado a merced de hechos funestos, como la muerte del afamado barítono Leonard Warren, escucharemos la obertura de manos de la Filarmónica de Berlín dirigida por Claudio Abbado.

Macbeth is an opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi, with an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave and additions by Andrea Maffei, based on William Shakespeare's play of the same name. Written for the Teatro della Pergola in Florence, it was Verdi's tenth opera and first given on 14 March 1847. Macbeth was the first Shakespeare play that Verdi adapted for the operatic stage.
