Musical director, composer and arranger Daniel Edmonds has written music for both screen and stage. He was the musical director of the musicals King Kong, Strictly Ballroom and Dream Lover, as week as the award-winning show Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. 00h 00’00” I dreamed a dream 00h 03’42” Presentación 00h 05’46” Cabecera 00h 06’52” Inicio 00h 08’21” Prologue 00h 18’44” Valjean’s soliloquy 00h 22’50” At the end of the day 00h 28’13” I dreamed a dream 00h 33’58” Fantine’s arrest 00h 37’13” The runaway cart 00h 41’15” Who am I? 00h 45’12” Fantine’s death 00h 48’57” The confrontation 00h 52’35” Castle on a cloud 00h 54’08” Master of the house 00h 59’33” Waltz of treachery 01h 04’17” Stars 01h 08’17” The ABC Café 01h 14’15” Do you hear the people sing? 01h 16’50” In my life 01h 21’06” A heart full of love 01h 24’10” One day more 01h 28’30” On my own 01h 32’54” Building the barricade 01h 35’29” Javert’s arrival - Little people 01h 38’59” A little fall of rain 01h 44’44” Night of anguish 01h 45’27” First attack 01h 48’57” Drink with me 01h 51’16” Bring him home 01h 54’50” The final battle 01h 57’29” The sewers 02h 00’47” Dog eats dog 02h 04’12” Javert’s suicide 02h 09’10” Empty chairs at empty tables 02h 13’08” Beggars at the feast 02h 16’18” Finale 02h 20’42” Curiosidades y anécdotas 02h 23’02” Suddenly 02h 26’39” I dreamed a dream - Medley

LES MISERABLES COMPOSER: Claude-Michel Schonberg LYRICIST: Herbert Kretzmer BOOK: Alain Boublil, Claude-Michele Schonberg, Jean-Marc Natel SOURCE: Victor Hugo's novel Les Miserables (1862) DIRECTOR: Trevor Nunn and John Caird CHOREOGRAPHER: Trevor Nunn and John Caird PRINCIPLE CAST: Randy Graff (Fantine), Terrence Mann (Javert), Colm Wilkinson (Jean Valjean) OPENING DATE: Mar 12, 1987 CLOSING DATE: May 18, 2003 PERFORMANCES: 6,680 SYNOPSIS: Jean Valjean is a convicted thief who attempts to rebuild his life with a new family while being mercilessly hunted by the pious Inspector Javert. As these two men battle for their souls, the Paris streets are littered with a political revolution that will forever alter the lives of these two men. Robert Meffe traces the development of Claude-Michel Schönberg, Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel, and Herbert Kretzmer's epic mega-musical, Les Misérables through inception and how it created the template for musicals that would successfully fuse their scores with popular musical forms. Significantly, the creative team of Trevor Nunn and John Napier struggled to adapt the French novel's storyline in a way that would resonate with a contemporary British audience both in pacing and the application of universal themes. The show's success inspired a fleet of musicals whose plots waxed epic including The Phantom of the Opera, Miss Saigon, and Titanic. Robert Meffe- Broadway: Associate Conductor of Little Women and the last six years of Les Misérables, keyboards for Evita (2012 revival), Newsies, The Phantom of the Opera, Avenue Q, Spelling Bee, Grey Gardens and Bombay Dreams. This Christmas, to celebrate 50 years since Jesus Christ Superstar first opened on Broadway, we've dedicated an entire episode to unwrapping its magic. What is it about the rock opera that makes it, as one Times critic wrote, ‘the one masterpiece of Lloyd Webber's career'? Why, after five decades, does it still give pause for theological thought? And how can one piece of music connect such disparate-seeming artists as Dmitri Shostakovich, Googoosh, Lin Mannuel Maranda, and Kanye West? Featuring interviews with Sirs Tim Rice and Karl Jenkins, Alain Boublil, Peaches and Nico Muhly, this is … The Jesus Christ Superspecial.… Buy us a coffee innit: https://ko-fi.com/classicalpod … Follow us here: instagram.com/classicalpod/ twitter.com/ClassicalPod facebook.com/ClassicalPod/

Join us this week for one of the more tragic musicals we have discussed to date; the 25th anniversary performance of Miss Saigon, which shouldn't come as a shock given it's subject topic and that it comes from acclaimed duo Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil of Les Misérables fame. As always we discuss the show in detail, but we also touch on a range of controversies attached within the history of the show, and how it played a role in changing theatre. With a phenomenal cast of Eva Noblezada and Jon Jon Briones, this is a fantastic show, and maybe the best way for Miss Saigon to be experienced, but will this be too much for Danny to take, or will he instead be moved by Kim's struggles and find solace in The Engineer's eccentricities? Once one of the most popular genres of video games, adventure games have become much more niche in recent years. But thankfully, it's a niche with some absolutely fantastic music! From the mid-80s to the early 2000s, adventure games were at the forefront of narratives in interactive entertainment. In a time before RPGs embraced cinematic CGI cutscenes and voice acting, LucasArts, Sierra, and other adventure game developers were pioneering multimedia in video games, presenting audiences with expansive stories, fully-voiced casts of characters, full-motion video, and some truly memorable “moon logic puzzles.” They also created some incredible music! Join Adam, Hilary, and Jono as they move through adventure game history, highlighting some of their favorite music tracks from classics of the genre (and there might be some talk of musical theater thrown in there for good measure)!Featuring: Hilary Andreff, Jonathan Logan, Adam Luhrs; Edited by Jonathan LoganLinks for this episodeYouTube - How Octopath Traveler Hypes its Boss Battles - Game Score FanfareTracklist0:15:48 - The Magic Meadow (Mark Seibert) - Sierra Soundtrack Collection0:19:43 - Deep in the Caribbean… (Michael Land) - The Secret of Monkey Island0:34:16 - Atrus' Study (Jack Wall) - Myst III: Exile Soundtrack0:37:03 - Grim Fandango (Peter McConnell) - Grim Fandango Remastered Original Soundtrack0:59:36 - Gyakuten Saiban 1~3 Courtroom Suite (Masakazu Sugimori, Noriyuki Iwadare) - Gyakuten Saiban 15th Anniversary Orchestra Concert1:08:26 - Crusin' (Jared Emerson-Johnson) - Sam & Max Save the World Soundtrack1:48:34 - Adam's Bonus Track!Bonus Background Tracks0:00:39 - Courtroom Lounge ~ Opening Prelude (English Turnabout Mix)(Masakazu Sugimori) - Professor Layton VS Gyakuten Saiban Magical Mystery Music0:02:13 - You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown (Clark Gesner, Andrew Lippa) - You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown (1999 Broadway Cast)0:02:31 - Game of Life (Michael Kooman, Christopher Dimond) - Dani Girl (Demo)0:03:14 - Overture (Andrew Lloyd Webber, Tim Rice) - Jesus Christ Superstar (1970 Concept Cast)0:03:37 - The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (William Finn) - The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (2005 Original Cast)0:03:57 - Three Coins in the Fountain (Jule Styne, Sammy Cahn) - Forever Plaid (1990 Off-Off-Broadway Cast)0:04:26 - Hot Stuff (Pete Bellotte, Harold Faltermeyer and Keith Forsey) - Disaster (2016 Original Broadway Cast)0:05:13 - Overture (Work Song) (Claude-Michel Schönberg, Alain Boublil, Jean-Marc Natel) - Les Misérables (1987 Original Broadway Cast)0:05:33 - Prologue (We Might Play All Night) (Heidi Rodewald, Stew) - Passing Strange (2008 Original Broadway Cast)0:06:31 - Karnak's Dream of Life (Brooke Maxwell, Jacob Richmond) - Ride the Cyclone (2021 Studio Cast)1:39:35 - Title Theme - Star Trek: 25th AnniversaryAlbum LinksSierra Soundtrack CollectionVGMdbMyst III: Exile The Soundtrack Our Review VGMdb Grim Fandango Remastered Original Soundtrack Our Review (Original Soundtrack) VGMdb Amazon iTunes Store / Apple Music Spotify Gyakuten Saiban 15th Anniversary Orchestra Concert VGMdb CDJapan Spotify Sam & Max Save the World Soundtrack VGMdb Steam Bandcamp Professor Layton VS Gyakuten Saiban Magical Mystery Music Our Review VGMdb CDJapan Get in Touch:RPGFan.comEmail us: music@rpgfan.comTwitter: @rpgfancomInstagram: @rpgfancomFacebook: rpgfancomTwitch: rpgfancom
Pirates. Irish dancing. Queen Elizabeth I. Recorders. MOM?! This week, Paul and Jill examine the multi-million dollar flop that is Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil’s The Pirate Queen. This swashbuckling Irish epic stars Stephanie J. Block as Gráinne/Grace O'Malley, with music by the Les Mis duo themselves, all directed by Frank Galati. Our adventurous, sea-faring team asks deep, soulful questions like: what’s Michael Flatley up to lately? Does he want to hang out? How awesome is Irish dancing? And whose sapphically satisfying idea was it to have Stephanie J. What are the lessons behind Miss Saigon? The fabulous tony and Olivier award winning musical from the late 80s and early 90s written by Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil, with lyrics by Boublil and Richard Maltby Jr., the same dynamic duo who wrote Les Misérables in 1985. The musical premiered at the Drury Lane theater in September of '89 and closed after 4,000 performances a decade later. What was the meaningful message and clever concept that led to such success? To learn more, click here and give a listen! I think the meaningful message behind @MissSaigonUS is that hope of love can help you endure almost anything. Taking a look at all things Musical beginning with the letter B. Hear about Betty Buckley, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Tracie Bennett, Alain Boublil, Broken Wings, Blood Brothers - all things musical beginning with the letter B.
In this episode, we chat with Mike Zarate about which of life's lessons can be learned from Boubil and Schonberg's second opus - Miss Saigon!"THERE may never have been a musical that made more people angry before its Broadway debut than "Miss Saigon."Here is a show with something for everyone to resent -- in principle, at least. Its imported stars, the English actor Jonathan Pryce and the Filipino actress Lea Salonga, are playing roles that neglected Asian-American performers feel are rightfully theirs. Its top ticket price of $100 is a new Broadway high, sprung by an English producer, if you please, on a recession-straitened American public. More incendiary still is the musical's content. A loose adaptation of "Madama Butterfly" transplanted to the Vietnam War by French authors, the "Les Miserables" team of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg, "Miss Saigon" insists on revisiting the most calamitous and morally dubious military adventure in American history and, through an unfortunate accident of timing, arrives in New York even as the jingoistic celebrations of a successful American war are going full blast. So take your rage with you to the Broadway Theater, where "Miss Saigon" opened last night, and hold on tight. Then see just how long you can cling to the anger when confronted by the work itself. For all that seems galling about "Miss Saigon" -- and for all that is indeed simplistic, derivative and, at odd instances, laughable about it -- this musical is a gripping entertainment of the old school (specifically, the Rodgers and Hammerstein East-meets-West school of "South Pacific" and "The King and I"). Among other pleasures, it offers lush melodies, spectacular performances by Mr. Pryce, Miss Salonga and the American actor Hinton Battle, and a good cry. Nor are its achievements divorced from its traumatic subject, as cynics might suspect. Without imparting one fresh or daring thought about the Vietnam War, the show still manages to plunge the audience back into the quagmire of a generation ago, stirring up feelings of anguish and rage that run even deeper than the controversies that attended "Miss Saigon" before its curtain went up." - By Frank Richhttps://www.nytimes.com/1991/04/12/theater/review-theater-miss-saigon-arrives-from-the-old-school.htmlhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miss_Saigonhttps://stageagent.com/shows/musical/1590/miss-saigonhttps://www.mtishows.com.au/miss-saigonhttps://broadwaymusicalhome.com/shows/misssaigon.htmhttps://www.imdb.com/title/tt6162808/https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/17/theater/the-battle-of-miss-saigon-yellowface-art-and-opportunity.htmlhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claude-Michel_Sch%C3%B6nberghttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alain_Boublil

DO YOU HEAR THE STUDENTS SING?The French Revolution will come to life in vivid detail and song as Toledo School for the Arts presents the much-loved musical Les Misérables: School Edition for four performances from Thursday, October 17 through Sunday, October 20 at Owens Community College.Based on the Victor Hugo novel of the same name, Les Misérables follows the story of recently released convict, Jean Valjean, as he discovers that his freedom is tainted by mistrust and abuse. He breaks his parole and is pursued by the persistent Inspector Javert who refuses to believe that a convict could change for the good. Jean Valjean assumes a false identity to raise his adopted daughter, Cosette, but the Paris Student Uprising (1832) forces both he and Javert into direct confrontation. Each must acknowledge the truth of their pasts and learn to accept the change that time brings…or not.The production is directed by TSA faculty, led by Amelia Lefevre. The cast members are all students from Toledo School for the Arts featuring Trevor Gill-Snow (Whitehouse) as Jean Valjean, Reuben Hagedorn (Oregon) as Javert, Olivia Gierke (Oregon) as Fantine, Max Gierke (Oregon) as Marius, and Casey Merren (Oregon) as Eponine.TSA productions are noteworthy for the quality of student performances, where students craft their skills daily. “The level of performance is surprisingly good”, explains Artistic Director David Saygers. “Sometimes it’s hard to remember these are high school students, juggling homework and shows. Many of the performers are veteran actors, and bring a great deal of confidence and poise to their roles.”Performances begin at 7:00pm on Thursday, October 17, Friday, October 18, and Saturday, October 19 as well as at 2:30 on Sunday, October 20 at the Owens Community College Center for Fine and Performing Arts (30335 Oregon Road, Perrysburg, OH 43551). Tickets are $22, $16, or $10. To order your tickets contact the TSA Box Office at 419-246-8732 x226, or visit ts4arts.org.LES MISERABLES: SCHOOL EDITION is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI) and is performed entirely by students.LES MISÉRABLES: SCHOOL EDITIONPerformed entirely by studentsThu – Sat, October 17-197:00pmSunday, October 202:30pmOCC Center for Fine and Performing Arts$22, 16, 10A musical by ALAIN BOUBLIL and CLAUDE-MICHEL SCHӦNBERGBased on the novel by VICTOR HUGOMusic by CLAUDE-MICHEL SCHӦNBERGLyrics by HERBERT KRETZMEROriginal French text by ALAIN BOUBLIL and JEAN-MARC NATELAdditional Material by JAMES FENTONAdapted by TREVOR NUNN and JOHN CAIRDOriginal Orchestrations by JOHN CAMERONNew Orchestrations by CHRISTOPHER JAHNKE, STEPHEN METCALFE and STEPHEN BOOKEROriginally Produced by CAMERON MACKINTOSHSchool Edition specially adapted and licensed byMUSIC THEATRE INTERNATIONAL and CAMERON MACKINTOSH (OVERSEAS) LTDIn nineteenth century France, Jean Valjean is released from years of unjust imprisonment, but discovers his freedom is marred by mistrust and mistreatment. (Did you know it had ever gone away?) The original Cameron Mackintosh theatrical colossus ran for more than 15 years before closing in 2003, then came back for a brief encore in 2006. Sue Lawley's castaway this week is the composer of the hit musicals Les Miserables and Miss Saigon, Claude-Michel Schönberg. Claude-Michel always knew he would be a composer. As a small boy growing up in Brittany he would play the piano and compose pieces for his mother. He dreamt of getting away from his little village on the French coast and going to live in Paris and compose operas. To please his mother Claude-Michel went to University to study mathematics, but whilst he was there he formed a band and began writing songs. They caught the attention of an EMI A&R man which resulted in two singles and a job for Claude-Michel as an A&R assistant. Claude-Michel enjoyed a brief career as a pop star, when he had a huge hit in France with Le Premier Pas (The first date) - a song that is still played on the radio there today. During this time he had met lyricist Alain Boublil who had been impressed with his pop songs and both were keen to take on a bigger project. The result was La Révolution Française which did moderately well in France. The duo perfected their skills when they went on to create the hugely successful musicals Les Miserables, Miss Saigon and Martin Guerre.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs]Favourite track: Beim Schlagengehen by Richard Strauss Book: All the Little Live Things by Wallace Earle Stegner Luxury: Grand piano
