The Missa solemnis in D major, Op. 123, is a Solemn Mass composed by Ludwig van Beethoven from 1819 to 1823. It was first performed on 7 April 1824 in Saint Petersburg, Russia, under the auspices of Beethoven's patron Prince Nikolai Galitzin; an incomplete performance was given in Vienna on 7 May 1824, when the Kyrie, Credo, and Agnus Dei were conducted by the composer.  It is generally considered one of the composer's supreme achievements and, along with Bach's Mass in B minor, one of the most significant Mass settings of the common practice period. Written around the same time as his Ninth Symphony, it is Beethoven's second setting of the Mass, after his Mass in C major, Op. 86. The work was dedicated to Archduke Rudolf of Austria, archbishop of Olmütz, Beethoven's foremost patron as well as pupil and friend. The copy presented to Rudolf was inscribed "Von Herzen—Möge es wieder—Zu Herzen gehn!" ("From the heart – may it return to the heart!") SOMM RECORDINGS announces the first volume of Prokofiev Milestones, featuring three characterful sonatas and a sparkling arrangement of music from Romeo and Juliet performed by violinist Lana Trotovšek and flutist Boris Bizjak accompanied by Maria Canyigueral on piano.Prokofiev Milestones revealingly turns the focus away from the prolific composer's famed orchestral works and celebrated ballets to his rich and varied chamber music.First performed in 1943, the Sonata for Flute and Piano (Op.94) is, as Robert Matthew-Walker comments in his notes, “music not of war, but of peace”; a pastoral escape laced with wit and mischief vouchsafed within a pristine neo-classical frame. It is heard again, transformed, in Prokofiev's transcription for Violin and Piano (Op.94a). Composed soon after, it lays claim to being “one of the finest 20th-century works in the genre and a genuine masterpiece”.The Sonata for Two Violins (Op.56) is heard in a new arrangement by Boris Bizjak that eloquently makes much of its sentimentality, drama, and vitality.A characterful suite drawn from Romeo and Juliet, and arranged for violin and piano by Lidia Baich and Matthias Fletzberger, revels in Shakespeare's great romance and Prokofiev's ardent response to it.TracksSonata for Flute and Piano in D Major, Op. 94 (24:15) I. The Consecration of the House (German: Die Weihe des Hauses), Op. 124, is a work by Ludwig van Beethoven composed in September 1822. It was commissioned by Carl Friedrich Hensler, the Director of Vienna's new Theater in der Josefstadt, and was first performed at the theatre's opening on October 3, 1822. It was the first work Beethoven wrote after his revival of studying the works of J. S. Bach and Handel and bears their influence. The Consecration of the House overture was also the first item on the program at Beethoven's 7 May 1824 concert at Vienna's Theater am Kärntnertor, where the world premiere of his 9th Symphony took place.Previously, in 1811, Beethoven had written The Ruins of Athens (Die Ruinen von Athen), Op. 113, incidental music for August von Kotzebue's play of the same name, for the dedication of a new theatre in Pest. This same work was to be performed again in 1822 for the new theatre in Vienna. However, Carl Meisl, the commissioner of the Royal Imperial Navy, changed the texts of numbers 1, 6, 7, and 8 of Beethoven's work. Beethoven was not pleased with the revision, and felt that the new text did not fit the music. Meisl also introduced a section, Wo sich die Pulse, for which Beethoven wrote new music. Beethoven wrote a completely new overture for the work, altered some of the musical numbers, and added others, including a final chorus with a violin solo and ballet. This new overture is known as The Consecration of the House Overture. Conductor Shea Lolin and composer/producer Christopher Hussey have returned to Prague to record with the Czech Philharmonic Wind Ensemble, carefully curating an album of premiere recordings spotlighting the woodwind orchestra, capturing its kaleidoscopic colors and symphonic potential to deepen and broaden appreciation of the medium's power.A large chamber ensemble of flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, and saxophones in various sizes, the woodwind orchestra has a highly adaptable and magical tonal palette—it can be, in turn, boldly vibrant and delicately beautiful, thrillingly powerful and hauntingly tender, earnestly solemn and joyously comical. The recorded repertoire reflects a spectrum of musical styles that exist in 21st-century concert music, ranging from the familiar and instantly singable to the more avant-garde, but always possessing an accessible and inviting musical narrative. Chromosphere is a landmark album, comprising exciting new and re-imagined pieces by leading composers in the genre and demonstrating the unique soundworld of the woodwind orchestra.Shea Lolin is a dynamic and versatile freelance musician living in London. It features outstanding performances by the principal woodwind players of the Czech Philharmonic, conducted by Shea Lolin, and includes four world premiere recordings. The recording was made to both promote British composers and to give focus to the woodwind orchestra. This program showcases the woodwind orchestra in all its voices: Overture for Woodwinds is bright and lyrical, while Pantomime is joyously comical with moments of heartrending nostalgia. A notable shift in the language comes with Dreamtide, which is a beautiful expression of the subconscious, with delicate and tender lines. Composer and Latin Grammy-nominated conductor Dimitri Cervo presents in this album his complete piano works, in a comprehensive selection of pieces that span nearly four decades of creative output.   Interpreted by Lucas Thomazinho, one of the most prominent figures in the contemporary piano scene, the album showcases the ongoing artistic evolution and rich diversity of musical influences that permeate Cervo's body of work.   The album features three distinct phases in Cervo's compositional journey: The first phase, spanning from 1985 to 1997, is notably marked by the influence of classical piano repertoire, with special reverence for the works of Scriabin and Chopin, whose works were intensely studied by Cervo during his academic piano training. Standouts from this phase include Estudo (1985), with its intricate rhythmic changes, and Prelúdio Titanic (1985), an evocative piece that portrays the history of the famous ship. The second creative phase (1998-2010) is characterized by the innovative fusion of distinctive elements of Brazilian music with minimalism. Finally, the third and current phase, which began in 2011 and continues to the present day, is marked by the amalgamation of various influences and the consolidation of the composer's artistic maturity and innovative vision in the contemporary musical landscape. Founded in 2016, the Brazilian group Brazú Quintê is dedicated to performing chamber music, enriched by nuances and inflections of Brazilian music. They present their second album, DIVINARE, with original works that stand out for the diversity of their distinct musical atmospheres.   With a unique lineup that includes Fábio Leal (electric guitar), Mariana Rodrigues (piano), Ariane Rodrigues (flute), Thiago Faria (cello), and Letícia Andrade (violin), the group was conceived with the aim of integrating the electric guitar into the world of chamber music, blending tradition and modernity.   Among the highlights, Aromas do Sul (Fábio Leal) constructs a harmonious dialogue of rhythms such as chamamé, guarânia, and Argentine tango, with precision and refinement. Divinare (Fábio Leal) is inspired by the poem "Os Sabiás Divinam" by Manoel de Barros, while Caxinguelê, with lyrics by Paulo César Pinheiro, pays homage to Villa-Lobos, capturing the essence of the Amazon and its mythologies. So she asks him to move a grandfather clock to her bedroom, which he agrees to do.Meanwhile, she waits for Gonzalve, a poet. He arrives, and is inspired to poetry, but not to lovemaking, where Concepción would prefer the latter. When Ramiro is about to return, she sends him back saying that she chose the wrong clock. She then has the idea of having Gonzalve hide in one clock so that Ramiro can carry him upstairs. After Gonzalve is concealed, Don Iñigo, a banker and another of Concepción's gentleman friends, arrives. When Ramiro returns, she persuades him to carry up the clock with Gonzalve concealed in it, and she accompanies him.On his own, Don Iñigo conceals himself in another clock. Ramiro enters, asked to watch the shop, and musing on how little he understands of women. Concepción then summons him back upstairs, saying that the clock's hands are running backwards. She and Don Iñigo try to communicate, but Ramiro arrives back with the other clock. Don Iñigo has hidden himself again, and Ramiro now carries up the clock with Don Iñigo upstairs. With Gonzalve now downstairs, Concepción tries to turn him away from poetry towards her, but Gonzalve is too absorbed to follow her lead. Ramiro returns, and Gonzalve must conceal himself again. He offers to take the second clock up again. Impressed by how easily Ramiro carries the clocks (and their load) upstairs, Concepción begins to be physically attracted to him. With Gonzalve and Don Iñigo now each stuck in clocks, Torquemada returns from his municipal duties. Both Gonzalve and Don Inigo eventually escape their respective clock enclosures, the latter with more difficulty. To save face, they each have to purchase a clock. Concepción is now left without a clock, but she muses that she can wait for the muleteer to appear regularly with his watch repaired. The opera ends with a quintet finale, as the singers step out of character to intone the moral of the tale, paraphrasing Boccaccio: "Among all lovers, only the efficient succeed,The moment arrives, in the pursuit of love,When the muleteer has his turn!"

As part of a 10-concert European tour in June 2023, Anne-Sophie Mutter and her Virtuosi ensemble, comprising some of today's finest young string players, gave an acclaimed concert at the Vienna Musikverein. This took place just days before the violinist's 60th birthday and it speaks volumes that she chose to share a stage with her young colleagues rather than marking the occasion with a gala solo performance. Based on that live concert, Mutter's latest Deutsche Grammophon album shows the variety and versatility for which she has become renowned, its repertoire ranging from Vivaldi and Bach to Previn and John Williams, via Joseph Bologne. It is set for release on 10 November, with three taster tracks to be issued digitally, complete with videos: Williams's Theme from Schindler's List on 6 October; the Allegro finale from Vivaldi's Concerto for 3 Violins on 27 October; and the central Largo from Bologne's Violin Concerto in A major on the same day as the album. The Vienna concert was filmed as a Unitel production, in co-production with Deutsche Grammophon & ZDF, and in cooperation with Arte Concert & Wiener Musikverein. Deutsche Grammophon is delighted to share a new, meditative recording of Arvo Pärt's Spiegel im Spiegel from Icelandic composer, conductor and producer Viktor Orri Árnason. The audio version of this extended single, on which Árnason plays both viola and piano, comes out on 8 September 2023. A music video, which the artist describes as a “moving painting”, will follow on 11 September, Pärt's 88th birthday. The track will also act as a prelude to the artist's debut DG album, a project he has developed in collaboration with soprano Álfheiður Erla Guðmundsdóttir and which is set for release later this year.  An early example of Pärt's tintinnabular style, the mesmeric masterpiece that is Spiegel im Spiegel was originally written for violin and piano but now exists in multiple versions. Árnason more than captures its sense of stillness and serenity in his intimate interpretation, slowing the tempo to amplify its reflective qualities. He plays the mirrored ascending and descending phrases of the melodic line on the viola. Beneath this, bell-like piano notes sound in the accompaniment, like raindrops softly falling into a pool of water. Árnason made and mixed the recording at his home studio in Iceland, and the track was mastered by Zino Mikorey in Berlin.1 Rodd 2 Na´ttmyrkrið 3 Vera 4 Orð og draumar 5 Blikna 6 Til kvæðagyðjunnar 7 Ljo´ssins kno¨rr 8 Li´kaminn er þaninn fiðlustrengur 9 Jo¨rðin bi´ður 10 Handan við haf Classical Music Discoveries is sponsored by Uber. @CMDHedgecock#ClassicalMusicDiscoveries #KeepClassicalMusicAlive#CMDGrandOperaCompanyofVenice #CMDParisPhilharmonicinOrléans#CMDGermanOperaCompanyofBerlin#CMDGrandOperaCompanyofBarcelonaSpain#ClassicalMusicLivesOn#Uber#AppleClassical Please consider supporting our show, thank you!Donate (classicalmusicdiscoveries.store) staff@classicalmusicdiscoveries.com This album is broadcast with the permission of Crossover Media Music Promotion (Zachary Swanson and Amanda Bloom).

Il Giustino RV 717 is a 1724 opera by Vivaldi set to a libretto by Nicolò Beregan, also set by Albinoni and Handel. The opera was composed for the 1724 carnival season in Rome and premiered at the Teatro Capranica. The aria of Anastasio, Vedrò con mio diletto, has become a famous piece sung at concerts and on recordings by countertenors such as Philippe Jaroussky and Jakub Józef Orliński and by contraltos as Sonia Prina. Sinfonia of Act I, Scene V, is also used by Vivaldi as the main motif of the first movement of La Primavera ("Spring") from his concerti The Four Seasons. The opera was revived in modern times in 1985 in a production directed by Alan Curtis and performed at the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza, at the Opéra Royal of the Palace of Versailles, and at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice. According to data reported by Le magazine de l'opéra baroque, a subsequent performance in concert form was held at the Mégaron Musikis in Athens in 2007, while a further revival on stage, for a total of twelve performances, took place, between 2008 and 2009, at the Oldenburgisches Staatstheater. In July 2018, a concert performance was given at the Festival International d'Opéra Baroque de Beaune — with the Accademia Bizantina conducted by Ottavio Dantone. In August 2018, a full costume version of Il Giustino, directed by Deda Cristina Colonna and conducted by Peter Spissky and the Camerata Øresund, figured as one of the central pieces in the Næstved Early Music Festival.

Known in his lifetime as ‘the north German Schubert', Carl Loewe (1796–1869) is remembered today chiefly as a composer of songs and ballads. Yet there is a considerable body of piano music that is strikingly innovative in content, expression and harmony, containing the germs of ideas later taken up by composers such as Wagner and Liszt. Loewe was unquestionably a brilliantly original talent, a major figure in ushering in the Romantic era – with the remarkable Four Fantasies of 1854 heard here ‘documenting' in music the contemporary emigration of German families to the United States. This third volume of Linda Nicholson's survey of his piano music on historical instruments concludes its first-ever complete recording on any kind of piano.TracksVier Phantasien, Op. 137 (1854) (36:55) I. One of the UK's most popular vocalists and broadcasters, Aled Jones MBE, today announces the release of his brand-new album which not only celebrates 40 years in show business but reveals some previously unreleased tracks, recently unearthed by Aled himself. Whilst visiting his family home in Anglesey earlier this year, Aled began reminiscing over the 40 years of memorabilia his parents have collected throughout his career. They literally had everything, even a collection of multi-coloured shirts and bow ties. Aled's mother explained they had been handmade for him by a BBC employee for a series he made in 1983, at the age of 13. This prompted Aled to go and find the original programme. He began to go through the footage and discovered recordings, which have never been released or even heard since the original broadcast 40 years ago. The album includes brand new arrangements of those classics including Ave Maria and Bright Eyes.Aptly titled, ‘One Voice – Full Circle', the new record is the fourth (and probably final, says Aled!) instalment in his utterly unique ‘One Voice' series in which, through the magic of technology, Aled is able to duet with his younger self: man and boy, baritone and treble. Here, album highlights include ‘Sailing', The Sutherland Brothers' 1972 track best known as a hit for Rod Stewart, Handel's ‘Where'er you Walk', from the musical drama Semele, Welsh love song ‘Bugeilo'r Gwenith Gwyn' and traditional ballad ‘Scarborough Fair'. Aled even tracked down the original 80's guitarist, Dylan Fowler, to re-record his part for this new recording. TRACKLIST:1. Bright Eyes 2. Sea Fever 3. Scarborough Fair 4. Where ‘ere You Walk 5. Handel completed the score only seven days before the premiere, at the King's Theatre in the Haymarket on 14 May 1723. There were eight performances in the premiere run. The work was revived on 18 April 1732, under the direction of the composer, for four performances. There were no further revivals until it was rediscovered and performed in Göttingen on 2 July 1967. The first UK performance since Handel's time was on 26 August 1969 at the Unicorn Theatre in Abingdon-on-Thames, England.  As with all Baroque opera seria, Flavio went unperformed for many years, but with the revival of interest in Baroque music and historically informed musical performance since the 1960s, Flavio, like all Handel operas, receives performances at festivals and opera houses today.
