Dominic is joined by the inimitable Prof. Hugo Bowles who is currently working the OUP edition of The Pickwick Papers  to guide us through this riot of a novel - if it is a novel? Hugo is an alumnus of both Oxford and Cambridge where he read English, Classics and Applied Linguistics. For over three decades he lectured at four Italian Universities and is the author of Dickens and Stenographic Mind (published by Edinburgh University Press). We last caught up with Hugo in his joint episodes with Dr. Claire Wood as they spoke about their award-winning Dickens Code Project.Joining us today, to read extracts from this dizzying narrative is the wonderful actress Gina Beck. The sounds of horses, carriages, seagulls and nature are used with permission from Epidemic SoundCaution: Listeners please note that the topic of suicide is covered in the earlier parts of the Pickwick story.Support the showIf you'd like to make a donation to support the costs of producing this series you can buy 'coffees' right here https://www.buymeacoffee.com/dominicgerrardThank you so much!Host: Dominic GerrardSeries Artwork: Léna GibertOriginal Music: Dominic GerrardThank you for listening!

If there was a huge asteroid hurtling toward Earth threatening to destroy life as we know it and you could see one more show before you die, what would it be? It can be anything you want - a show you've seen before, one that you wish you'd seen, or something you've made up entirely. What would be YOUR Last Show on Earth? This is the podcast in which we ask a special guest the big, BIG question that nobody ever needed or bothered to ask. Our guest this episode is Joanne HarrisJoanne Harris OBE FRSL is an award winning bestselling English-French author, who is probably best known for her novel Chocolat which was made into an Oscar-nominated movie starring Johnny Depp and Juliette Binoche. She became an author after teaching for 15 years and has written over 20 novels (which are published in more than 50 countries and almost all of which made the Sunday Times Bestsellers list) as well as numerous novellas, video game scripts, short stories, opera libretti, screenplays, and a stage musical with composer Howard Goodall. As well as championing trans rights, she is a passionate advocate for authors' rights (she is currently the Chair of the Society of Authors and member of the Board of the Authors' Licensing and Collecting Society) and is a patron of charities Médecins Sans Frontières and Plan UK. She lives in Almondbury, Yorkshire with her husband Kevin, where she writes all her works in a shed in her garden. Somehow she also finds time to both sing and play flute in the same band she joined when she was 16 years old.She loves musicals and goes to theatre as often as possible with her son Fred. [YouTube Video Version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDLBkQ8kTeA] We are joined by the dynamic cast of Hunted & Confronted on this powerpacked episode! Not only are we adjusting to our new operating system, but we're also flooded with callers in this edition, as we dig deep into the pedophilic epidemic sweeping America. Jesse Weeks, Suzanne Baker and Gina Beck all bring their unique perspectives and talents to the table when we delve deep into this much needed discussion. With over 38 confirmed arrests and over 188 cases nationwide, as well as backing from law enforcement, the team definitely has their work cut out for them. These aren't your average day, arm chair researchers that have been looking into the Pedogate phenomena, in fact, it's quite the opposite, these are the boots-on-the-ground people that the mainstream media and big tech giants love to censor and forget. They provide references, history and experience to an ever-growing issue within America, as well as the world. From things like pedophilia, to human trafficking, to child sex trafficking, prostitution and more, all of this stems from the dark underbelly of society that's being normalized. Merely days before this broadcast was recorded, a three-day long sting operation called Operation Reclaim and Rebuild netted over 300 people, in California! What seems like conspiracy theory and hyperbole becomes conspiracy fact while we break down this issue and more. The systemic predatory nature of sexual deviants and perverts has become commonplace, tolerated and accepted, and it's this type of wickedness that this team exposes! Gina Beck is one of British musical theatre’s best known sopranos.   She played Cosette in the 21st Anniversary cast of Les Miserables, did two years as Christine in Phantom of the Opera, played Glinda in Wicked for two years in London before joining the US Tour and is now playing Miss Honey in Matilda - a part she auditioned for just six weeks after having a baby.    Gina said she was worried she wouldn’t have any fun stories to tell but, as you’ll hear, that just isn’t true.   There’s the time a wigs mistress was sent on a quest for eyelash glue for Patti LuPone and the dinner with Andrew Lloyd Webber where she was too scared to eat anything in case he asked her a question.

Shows That Shaped Me

This week’s guest is actress Gina Beck. Gina’s big break came in 2008 when she joined the cast of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera as Christine Daee. Her subsequent theatre credits include the West End productions of Wicked, Les Miserables and Show Boat. Gina’s current role finds her back in the West End as Miss Honey in Dennis Kelly and Tim Minchin’s critically acclaimed musical adaptation of Matilda.
