Coffee is a connector. I think we all have seen this in our personal lives, our social lives, and in the community we help facilitate through our shops. In the fast paced often stessful world of cafes and the vocation of coffee, we need to take some time, and leave some room for appreciating the real impact a simple cup can have on people. On today's episode we will be talking all about the ways coffee does this and how we can use coffee to advance understanding, exploration, and connection with the Director of Room for Cream, Grant Garry! Grant Garry is an award winning filmmaker, actor, singer, and Certified Grief Educator. He is the director of the documentary Meet Me Where I Am - Grant has played The Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz at Opera San Luis Obispo as Disney's Beauty and the Beast, NCIS: Los Angeles, Legally Blonde: The Musical, Black Cat, Night of the Living Deb, Sweeney Todd, and Cinderella. He hosts the podcast Where I Am on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Amazon Music. A long-form discussion based show about love, loss, and finding meaning as we move forward. His recent release and project is called "Room for Cream", a series dedicated to the exploration of coffee, coffee culture, and the ways coffee facilitates connection. Esther and Erin are back----how is it February already!? This week, they reflect on the Super Bowl and note the cultural significance of Bad Bunny's halftime show and the impact of SoCal commercials. Erin also spills the details of how she finally met her TV dad, Jason Alexander, and interviewed him about his production of Sweeney Todd playing at the La Mirada Theatre. They also react to catching some Jewy moments in The Pitt, Woner Man, and Jeopardy.
Choice Classic Radio presents Sherlock Holmes. Today we bring to you the episode titled “Sweeney Todd, Demon Barber.” Please consider supporting our show by becoming a patron at http://choiceclassicradio.com We hope you enjoy the show!
This week I speak with Frank Verlizzo, on his first book of the Retro Broadway Mystery Series – Scenery of the Crime. Before becoming an author, Frank Verlizzo was a legendary graphic designer, the man behind such iconic poster art as the original Broadway productions of Disney's The Lion King; Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd and Sunday in the Park with George, and Ira Levin's Deathtrap.
It can be a tender thing to launch a creative project into the world. That's true whether you're an actor, a baker, a musician, a quilter, or almost any other artisan. As a writer, releasing a book often feels like that scene in early Gray's Anatomy where Meredith stands before Derek and says, “Pick me, choose me, love me.”In short, it's a little bit vulnerable. When I launched my first book back in 2019, Daryl took me to see Sweeney Todd at our local theater, to distract me from all of the big feelings. (A murdering, singing barber will do that!) These days, I've learned to notice and honor the feelings as they come and pass. There are a lot of them, in the week leading up to a book launch. And these feelings aren't just about whether people will like the book. That's part of it, for sure—no author wants to be panned or ignored. But they go beyond just wanting the book to hit well. They run the full gamut from excitement to terror. To paraphrase my writer-friend Ruth, the only thing scarier than no one is reading your book is people actually, you know, reading your book. But here's the thing: being part of the literary world is one of the great joys of my life. And that joy is a wonderful balm for all of the BIG FEELINGS™ that show up on launch week.I love my writing communities. That's you, beloved SubStack friends. It's the writers who read early drafts of my work (thank you, Steve! thank you, Aarik!) and gave me honest feedback. It's the writers whose books I love who have helped me grow in the craft. It's fellow writers in the trenches being honest about what it takes to turn a beautiful phrase and keep pursuing what is beautiful and true in a world filled with AI slop and lazy shortcuts. It's writers who are also bookstore owners (I love you, Nooks!) who foster community spaces where people can be together, heartened, seen, and read. Each time I publish a book and begin to feel all the feelings (hooray! oh no! how are my numbers doing? what have I forgotten?), I remember that you and each fellow reader and writer out there are the biggest gifts of all.I'd be honored if you'd give Weathering Change a look. Preorders matter, and this is the last week you can sneak one of those in, at Amazon or Nooks or anywhere you love buying your books. (You can also request it at your local library, which is free to you!)But above all, please know that I am so grateful that you're with me on this journey of words, seeking to make meaning out of life.Today's podcast is short and sweet—just 25 minutes. In it I read chapter one from Weathering Change. Many thanks to my publisher, InterVarsity Press, for giving me permission to share it with you today. If you'd prefer to read it rather than listen to it, you can find it here.Thank you for your love and support. I am so excited to share this book with you! Recognized as Canada's first lady of musical theatre, Louise has led productions of Les Misérables, Piaf, Sweeney Todd, and she originated the part of Donna in Mamma Mia! on Broadway, but she says Kimberly might be the most perfect part for her right now. She sits down with guest host Talia Schlanger to tell us why as she reflects on her acclaimed stage career.

Comfort food and a bottomless snack bag for our season finale. Helena Bonham Carter is an award-winning English actress known for her incredible performances across films including the Harry Potter movies, Howards End, Planet of the Apes, Sweeney Todd, The King's Speech and TV series such as Toast and The Crown. There are certainly too many credits to mention for a star who made her debut in 1985 in A Room with a View. She's with us to talk about her latest role as Lady Caterham in Agatha Christie's Seven Dials, which starts streaming on Netflix from 15 January. This is her first time in a Queen of Crime adaptation, with co-stars including Mia McKenna-Bruce and former Dish guest, Martin Freeman. Helena comes equipped with her sizeable snack bag, curated especially for her life on-set, but there's still room for Dish's first cheese toasties, featuring five different cheeses. The cheese toasties with sticky shallots are paired with the Loved & Found Feteasca Alba Brut, which sadly is no longer available to buy. The Waitrose wine experts have since lined up the perfect replacement; a glass of Valdo Elevantum Prosecco. For this episode, Nick, Angela and Helena also enjoy a Mother Root and tonic, alongside the many, many other beverages that make it on to the table. From the perilous times on the set of Seven Dials to helping Helena overcome her rice intimidation, we finish up season 8 of Dish with a hearty serving of good company. There's a short break now before we return in February for more. Til next time! You can watch full episodes of Dish on YouTube and, new for this season, on Spotify. Encore! Encore! This January Janet, John, (and Pen) wanted to revist the astounding life this actress with her 80-year long career in film, television, and the stage... Angela Lansbury. This English-born, though Irish-bred actress began her career, after escaping the Blitz by moving to United States, at the age of eighteen by playing a cheeky Cockeny servant to Charles Boyer in the thriller Gaslight (1944). This role brought her a contract with MGM and her first Academy Award nominaton for best supporting actress. At the time, she was seen as a b-list actor, but her role in The Manchirian Candidate (1962) put her on the map and is often considered, to this day, one of her best perfomances. She also quickly gained stardom for her lead role in the Broadway musical Mame in 1966, a catergory of performance she absoluted dominated. This role lead to her winning her fist every Tony Award. However, this starlet didn't stop only at theatrical appearances. In fact, she made her way to worldwide fame after playing the sleuth, Jessica Flecther, in the American whodunit series Murder She Wrote. The show ran for 12 seasons until 1966. Earning it the title of one of the longest-running and most popular detective dramas in television history. Some of Lansbury's projects include, Dear World, Gypsy, Sweeney Todd, National Velvet (1944), The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945), Nanny McPhee (2005), and Mary Poppins Returns (2018). She also acheived many acolades such as 6 Tony Awards, 6 Golden Globes, 2 honorary BAFTA Awards and many more. So join us and relax as we revist Tribute 9 Mini-Sode: Angela Lansbury! Alex Lacamoire is back for round two and I hope you're ready because not only does he put that keyboard to very good use, but Alex was also kind enough to bring isolated stems from the Hamilton cast album. Yep, I know, it's insane. Not only does he play some of his favorite parts (the Stevie Wonder moment in One Last Time and the Eleanor Rigby part of the opening number, for example) but Alex gives us a tour around the orchestra, one instrument at a time: strings from Burn, percussion from Guns and Ships, guitar in Helpless, stride piano in The Room Where It Happens, the list goes on and on and onnnnn. Plus! We talk Billy Joel, Chopin, Steven Sondheim, Taylor Swift's The Life of a Showgirl, the connection between The Beatles and Sisqó, and Alex shares fantastic stories from his experience working on Sweeney Todd. This is such a deep dive and I promise that you'll love every second of it! Seriously, this barely scratches the surface of Lac's generosity. What'd I tell you? The vibes. are. PRISTINE. At last… our pod is complete again.” Join Ian, Liam & Megs (she always goes last), along with Friend of the Podcasters: Beadle Steve, for our 304th episode as we sharpen our razors, roll out the pie dough, and dive into the gothic, gory glory of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007). This week, we're not just talking Burton's blood-soaked macabre attempt at a masterpiece — we're also sharing our collective memories from our very own recent production of Sweeney Todd! Expect behind-the-scenes stories, backstage laughs, and maybe a few stories about trap doors and jettisons of blood This week we discuss: How Tim Burton's adaptation balances musical theatre grandeur with cinematic horror — and where it falls short. Johnny Depp's take on the title role: tortured genius or just Burton doing Burton again? Helena Bonham Carter's Mrs. Lovett — delightful, deranged, and determined to make the worst pies in London. How Alan Rickman and Timothy Spall manage to be both repulsive and magnetic - but can they sing? Who do we think could've done it better? The use of colour, lighting, and sound — and why did the crew need so many garbage bags? How Sweeney Todd manages to turn tragedy into operatic spectacle without losing its emotional sting. We discuss at great length a couple of elements that one of us just couldn't overlook We share our favourite moments (and biggest mishaps) from our own stage production — from what it's like to be reviewed ourselves to unexpected laughter in the wrong places and if you can imagine it - Ian flexing in the spotlight What it's like performing Sondheim's music live — the challenge, the rhythm, and the glorious chaos. Beadle Steve joins us to talk about his experience, his favourite scenes, and whether he's still hearing “Ding Dong!” in his sleep... and what happened to the ensemble anyway? And finally, whether Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is the Best Film Ever — or just the bloodiest musical we've ever loved. We welcome back Sondheim scholar Rick Pender, who talks about his new book, Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd: Behind the Bloody Musical Masterpiece. "An award-winning Sondheim expert dives into all facets of this unique, murder-filled masterpiece-its slimy roots, original production, characters from killers to lovers to bakers, soaring score, gripping storytelling, and lasting power."
A quiet Sunday turned into something else entirely. We kick things off with the Big Ten pulse check—Ohio State's defense looks nasty, disciplined, and deceptively complex, while Michigan's power run game still feels one note against an elite unit. Indiana's surprising charge raises a real question: are we watching a true new contender or a hot streak built on timing and grit? We dig into coaching impact, road-game confidence, and the thin margin between swagger and a trap. Then the night flips. A college party swells behind the house, cars creep onto the lawn, and a sick-to-your-stomach moment breaks out as the crowd surges into the yard. What follows is a case study in boundaries and tone: we ask, we wait, we de-escalate, and when it spikes again, we make the call. No theatrics, no heroics—just calm language, cool officers, and the party dissolving back to its side of the alley. It's part funny, part frustrating, and fully real life.We also take you on the road to a Dayton-area wedding where the dance floor never cools, late-night tracks get spicy, and the bride's joy becomes the best kind of chaos. In the quieter moments, we play with AI that turns our photos into Simpsons and Family Guy art—nostalgia in a click, proof that small creative toys can brighten a long day. And because comfort culture never sleeps, we drift into movies (Torque's underrated soundtrack and stunts, Depp's moody Sweeney Todd and Dark Shadows) and the most passionate debate of all: cereals. From Cinnamon Toast Crunch to the off-brand boxes you swear existed, we chase memories down every aisle. There's a final nudge on health and habits—less salt, more water, and a reminder that a second chance deserves a better routine. If you're here for sports, stories, tech toys, or just a laugh at midnight mayhem, you'll feel at home. If this ride hits, follow the show, share it with a friend, and drop us your wildest neighbor story or your Big Ten power ranking in the comments. Tonight's triple feature charts the modern musical's evolution from stage grandeur to cinematic intimacy. Les Misérables (2012), long trapped in development, found redemption under Tom Hooper's live-sung realism, winning three Oscars and redefining the genre's emotional rawness. The Phantom of the Opera (2004), Andrew Lloyd Webber's own adaptation directed by Joel Schumacher, preserved the opulent theatricality of its 1986 hit, trading subtlety for spectacle and box office success. Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd (2007) stripped Sondheim's operatic dread to its bones—industrial London rendered in blood and ash, with Johnny Depp's haunted performance earning two Oscars. Together they form a triptych of obsession and redemption—three wounded men seeking salvation through music, their worlds collapsing between faith, art, and violence. From the barricades to the opera house to Fleet Street, these films trace the death of theatrical innocence and the last roar of the sung confession.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Good eeeevening....! Our annual Halloween broadcast hosted by Count Larry Maslon, offers a slice of the homicidal maniacs who roam the Broadway musical like crazy: Sweeney Todd, the Phantom, Anthony Perkins and much more.
"The Shakespeare of our time." Stephen Sondheim practically reinvented musicals with his flair for theatrical storytelling through his lyrics and music. A lesser known fact is that Sondheim also played a huge role in the puzzling world. Before he was famous for musicals like West Side Story, Sweeney Todd, and Sundays in the Park with George, Sondheim was the first puzzle editor for New York Magazine in the 1960s. Sondheim's obsession with puzzles and games lasted his whole life. He discovered escape rooms while in his 80s, and played many of them! Sondheim famously said "art, in itself, is an attempt to bring order out of chaos," and the same could very much be said for puzzles. Barry Joseph joins us on REPOD to talk about his new book, Matching Minds with Sondheim, which dives into Sondheim's love of puzzles and games. The types of puzzles spanned everything from crosswords, to treasure hunts, jigsaw puzzles, and parlour games. Little known fact—Stephen Sondheim is credited with bringing British style cryptic crosswords to the USA! He also commissioned custom jigsaw puzzles as opening night gifts for the cast and crew of his Broadway shows. As prolific as Sondheim was with his musicals, he was equally invested in his puzzles and games. Guest Barry Joseph digs deep into all the different ways Sondheim incorporated puzzles into his creative work and daily life. If you found this topic interesting, be sure to get his book, Matching Minds with Sondheim and check out his podcast of the same name. Award-winning and prolific Broadway producer Jeffrey Seller has finally made it to the podcast! Jeffery has produced Rent, Avenue Q, In the Heights, Hamilton, The Cher Show, and revivals of West Side Story and Sweeney Todd, just to name a few. Altogether his shows (currently) have 22 Tony Awards, and he's the only Broadway producer to have put up two Pulitzer Prize winning musicals: Hamilton and Rent. Jeffrey is the author of Theater Kid: A Broadway Memoir, which the New York Times describes as “a combination coming-of-age and rags-to-riches story that is unsparing in its description of his colorfully challenged-and-challenging father, unabashed in its description of his sexual awakening, and packed with behind-the-scenes detail, especially about the birth of Rent.” Not to mention the audiobook is voiced by a stellar cast of Broadway voices, and talking about them gives Jeffrey an idea *in real time *during our recording. In our hour-long conversation, Jeffrey expands on his experience producing Rent with Jonathan Larson, including an emotional retelling of what it was like working on the show after Jonathan's tragic and unexpected death. He also discusses working with Lin-Manuel Miranda on In the Heights and Hamilton, expounds on Hamilton's social and political responsibilities (rejecting the current administration's hostile takeover of The Kennedy Center, for example), discusses ways around Broadway's current ticket prices, and candidly opens up about Andrew Lippa's The Wild Party and The Last Ship with Sting in never-before-heard specificity. Plus, Baz Luhrmann's La Boheme, the power of writing a letter to get what you want, and how when it comes down to it... it's all about making shows with your friends. In Nevin Steinberg's second episode, the award winning Broadway sound designer gives even more insight to some of your favorite Hamilton moments including The Yorktown dance break and the stuttering gunshots heard throughout the show. And get ready to have your mind blown as Nevin shares the evolution of the Satisfied rewind, from Lin-Manuel Miranda's very first demo to the layered masterpiece we all know and love today anddddddd he shares a secret (and creepy! and awesome!) Easter egg that I promise you don't know about. While taking questions from the Patreon Peeps, Nevin talks a lot about how each sound is specifically chosen to tell a story, and even accents like cannon explosions and snare drums each have "their own personality." Plus, Nevin talks about the steam whistle in 2023's Sweeney Todd revival, shares his thoughts on new cinema sound, explains his fascination with what it takes to be a great leader, and why when it comes down to it Nevin is only in it for the banter.
