What happens to characters when writers lose interest? They get a terrible film. Which is what The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse is all about. Very meta. But does it avoid becoming a bad film itself? And since it's got Geoff Tipps, a surprisingly touching Herr Lipp plot, and Victoria Wood herself in it, do Mickey, Hannah and Jen even care? In this episode Danny is joined by writer, musician, author, playwright and comedian John Dowie. One of only a handful of comedians who are genuinely original, John has been described as "the most influential comic you've never heard of." During a remarkable career, he's opened for Black Sabbath, toured with Victoria Wood, and has been recorded on vinyl alongside Joy Division. He was doing alternative comedy before alternative comedy existed. John has worked with dozens of comics and actors including Bill Nighy, Tony Allen, Rory Bremner, Jim Sweeney, Steve Steen and many more. He shares some great stories and his most recent book, "Before I Go", is available here. https://poniesandhorsesbooks.com/product/before-i-go/ If you can´t get enough of these podcasts, head to https://www.patreon.com/DannyHurst to access my exclusive, member-only, fun-filled and fact-packed history-related videos. KEY TAKEAWAYS One of John´s earliest comedy influencers was Ken Dodd, who was bought into his school to do a talk on not smoking and ended up doing an hour of stand up. John entered the comedy circuit at a time when the industry was dying because of TV. John gave up stand-up so he could see more of his children. The show John is most proud of is Dogman, which he wrote for children. Alexi Sayle was like the comedy equivalent of the Sex Pistols. John shares why so many comedians’ relationships break down. BEST MOMENTS “Only a very small percentage of comedy is genuinely original, and John is part of that very small percentage.” “Is there anything you can’t do – “making money” .” “I learned to play the piano the way you would learn to play a typewriter.” “I decided to forget about the marriage experience and concentrate on becoming an alcoholic.” “It was the only show where my ego did not come on stage with me.” “Jim Sweeney and Steve Steen are the best improvised comedy performers you'll ever see in England.” “I am not buying green bananas anymore.” “My lung condition makes it difficult to speak at length.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://x.com/dowiejohn Dogman book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dogman-Comedy-Musical-Story-Children/dp/B002SQ48AW John´s other books - https://poniesandhorsesbooks.com/shop HOST BIO Historian, performer, and mentor Danny Hurst has been engaging audiences for many years, whether as a lecturer, stand-up comic or intervention teacher with young offenders and excluded secondary students. Episode 66 (15/05/25) On this episode - Greg shares some feedback about CHTF's new Chat GPT generated radio play ‘The Depot' with Barry and they discuss how they think it's going thus far before launching launch into the next “enthralling” episode, how to follow Queen at Live Aid, another interesting quandary in our agony aunt segment ‘You Be The Judge', Gwyneth Paltrow back on the carbs, Natalie Cassidy leaving Eastenders and some of her most famous storylines as Sonia Jackson, the works and life of Victoria Wood in ‘Barry's Masters of Comedy'(this week Greg reads Wikipedia and Barry does “impressions”), the new pope, not looking at your phone, AI being unable to recreate your likeness (unless you're famous), an impression of a Blue Riband chocolate bar (if it could speak), our improvised soap opera ‘Aylesbury Market', a dead celebrity seance, recommendations, Future Greg and a whole lot more!
Today, Danny Hurst sits down with Rachel Creeger, a talented comedian, writer, director, speaker, podcaster and actress. Rachel explains how, despite being from an Orthodox Jewish background, which traditionally discourages stand-up comedy, she became one. She shares how she fell in love with comedy through her family’s love of jokes and how it helped her at school where she was bullied and struggled with being neurodiverse. A serious illness didn’t stop her either and when she received a cash windfall; she used it to run away to the theatre and fulfil her dream. She also shares her experience of growing up as an Orthodox Jew in an area where the National Front was very prevalent. If you can´t get enough of these podcasts, head to https://www.patreon.com/DannyHurst to access my exclusive, member-only, fun-filled and fact-packed history-related videos. KEY TAKEAWAYS Most successful careers involve taking on multiple roles, so be willing to learn. Pursuing creative interests often requires you to take risks and prioritise personal happiness over traditional career paths. Do as much as you can within your current circumstances to follow your passion. Everything you do builds skills for your creative future. You don´t have to be famous to write something or act in a play. Personal challenges and unexpected circumstances can be transformed into opportunities. Comedians who used music, e.g. Jasper Carrott and Victoria Wood, really shaped comedy in the 70s. Dealing with the National Front was especially hard for Rachel´s older relatives who had fled persecution to find safety in the UK. BEST MOMENTS “When someone introduces me as a comedian. I get a little, tiny glow." “I said, ‘I'm going to run away to join the theatre,’ and that's what I did.” “My material isn't niche. It's just another perspective on the same stuff.” “Skinheads would stop you in the street and give you a hard time… it was sort of my normal reality.” “It was important to also be part of what was happening in Britain and in London, because that's where we were growing up.” “One minute our Sabbaths were these quite casual affairs, and then they became very strict.” “I had one of those retro-antisemitic experiences.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://www.rachelcreeger.com https://www.jewtalkintome.com/ https://podstatus.com/podcasts/leaving-erinsborough-327103 https://www.instagram.com/upstairsatadamandeve HOST BIO Historian, performer, and mentor Danny Hurst has been engaging audiences for many years, whether as a lecturer, stand-up comic or intervention teacher with young offenders and excluded secondary students. A (relatively) in-depth analysis of English singer-songwriter Peter Skellern in under thirty minutes.Peter Skellern rose to fame in the 1970s and had two top twenty hits on the UK Singles Chart: 'You're a Lady in 1972, which typifies his signature use of brass bands and choral arrangements and 'Hold On to Love' in 1975. In the 1980s, a decade before the Gallagher brothers, Skellern formed the band Oasis with Julian Lloyd Webber and Mary Hopkin. He also established a long standing musical comedy partnership with Richard Stilgoe. You're a Lady has been covered by many artists including Brigitte Bardot, Davy Jones, Dawn, Johnny Mathis, Hugues Aufray and Telly Savalas to name a few.On her 1985 BBC TV comedy series, Victoria Wood performed an affectionate parody of Skellern's musical style, accompanied by a brass band and choir, in a song entitled Skellern in Love.Skellern died in 2017. Since 2019, fans have crowdfunded CD reissues of his back catalogue. Two compilations have been released so far: The Complete Decca Recordings (2019) and The Complete Island and Mercury Recordings (2021) by Mint Audio. These collections feature all of Skellern's albums and singles from 1972 to 1982 (except music from the Happy Endings TV series). In 2024, another crowdfunding campaign was launched on Kickstarter to release the Happy Endings soundtrack on CD.In this episode I am in discussion with Dr. Andrew Webber.Mathew Woodallhttps://buymeacoffee.com/lownoiseWhy buy me a coffee?Low Noise is proudly ad-free. Joining Gyles this week is is one of Britain's best loved actresses, Anne Reid. Anne's long career began when a teacher at school persuaded her to apply for RADA at only 16, and after a stint in weekly rep and appearances on The Benny Hill Show and Hancock's Half Hour, she became a household name as Valerie Barlow in Coronation Street in the 60s, and then as a regular performer with Victoria Wood in the 80s. But it is arguably in later life that Anne has had the most notable, and interesting, roles in series like Last Tango In Halifax, Years and Years and The Sixth Commandment, as well as in the feature film The Mother with Daniel Craig. Anne tells Gyles about her childhood, growing up in the north-east during the war, about bombing raids and ballet classes. She talks about her parents' move to India, and delights Gyles with a story of an amazing trip she took to Delhi during her school holidays. She talks about her marriage to the producer Peter Eckersley, who sadly died in 1981, and her life since then. Thank you, Anne, for sharing your wonderful stories. Learn more about your ad choices. Matt and Luke board the TV machine to examine the TV landscape of November 1998. However, they are joined by a stowaway in the form of Dawn Glen who joins them to review ITV's beloved relationship drama Cold Feet, Victoria Wood's first foray into sitcom with dinnerladies. Plus, BBC sketch show Big Train starring a very talented group who went on to big things and the mostly forgotten Channel 4 teen comedy, A Youngperson's guide to Becoming a Rock Star.
The Crumble Lady, Lorraine Bowen who won David Walliams' Golden Buzzer on Britain's Got Talent and has attracted tens of thousands of new fans of all ages... base it on Lorraine Bowen is a unique performer! Quirky costumes, original idiosyncratic songs, vintage Casio keyboard played on an ironing board. She adores the fashion sensibility of the 1960s and has one of the largest polyester wardrobes in the UK. Lorraine began her career playing piano with Billy Bragg in massive venues in the UK and stadiums in Europe as well as both sides of the Berlin wall. Since then she has produced 6 albums, 100 videos on her Youtube TV Channel and regularly performs nationally and internationally. David Walliams wrote – She is genuinely really funny and talented. She's a British eccentric, she's half way between Miranda Hart and Victoria Wood, she's got that lovely warm sensibility about her. In the semi-finals of Britain's Got Talent David ironically introduced Lorraine to the nation as Britain's answer to Beyonce!

So when I talk about the importance of queer spaces I'm usually thinking about the fact that they give people opportunities to find others and connect, as well as exploring their identity in a safe space. But there's this whole other layer that I don't think about much. And, that is the fact that, for performers these spaces are (on top of everything else) where they get to dream and craft and create and fuck up with a safe and understanding audience. And this week's conversation was a great reminder of this. For this chat I'm joined by the cabaret geek himself, Paulus, who took a break from his latest show Looking For Me Friend: The Music of Victoria Wood to talk me about London's Madame JoJos. It was here that he got his big break as a drag queen, and though drag is no longer his bread and butter the place remains important to him because of the magic within the walls. We talk about the thanklessness of drag, building a chosen family, and how sometimes all you need is a wonderful middle-aged woman to tell you what you should do next. Do you have any memories of Madame JoJos, or clubbing from your own scene that you want to share? Well, if you have please get in touch - I want to create the biggest online record of people's memories and stories - go to www.lostspacespodcast.com and find the section 'Share a Lost Space' and tell me what you got up to! First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on August 13th 2023 Fans of archive television didn't used to talk about CROSSROADS much, despite it having an iconic theme tune written by TONY HATCH, an amazing array of guest performers, a whole host of top behind-the-scenes talent often cutting their teeth on this show, and being a series that ran for twenty-four years across several golden ages of British television production, which, for a lot of its long history produced an astonishing five episodes of drama week after week after week. Produced by first ATV and later Central Television, CROSSROADS, the story of the ups and downs in the lives of the people populating a Midlands-set Motel, was created by HAZEL ADAIR and PETER LING and started in November 1964, and would clock up a staggering 4510 episodes before finally closing its doors in April 1988, and then even managed to be resurrected for another 320 episode run between 2001 and 2003 which may, or may not, have all been a dream. Despite the fame of its most high-profile star, NOELE GORDON, around whom the series was initially built, and creating a whole host of iconic – and much imitated - TV characters, CROSSROADS was never considered to be the highest quality television series ever made. In fact, in certain quarters it became the benchmark for everything that was bad about cheaply made television, and yet it may have inspired some comedy gold from the mind of VICTORIA WOOD, and been an inspiration for NEIGHBOURS in Australia. However, in recent times, CROSSROADS has been getting a lot more favourable reappraisal, both with RUSSELL T DAVIES' high profile drama NOLLIE telling the story of the troubled era in the show's production when it chose to dispense with its star, and with arguably the last great release from the much-missed NETWORK DISTRIBUTING, who sold a box set containing over 700 episodes across more than ninety discs earlier this year, a box set which sold out, by the way, as it found a new and very delighted audience. Those regular contributors to VISION ON SOUND, LISA and ANDREW were amongst those eager purchasers, and have become huge advocates for the series, and so they offered to join us today to share their views on CROSSROADS as they continue to work their way through that stack of shiny discs crammed full of high drama, controversial issues, and unintentional moments of hilarity. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.
In this edition of the podcast, Kev Hurst talks to Lucy Porter about everything from her EastEnders appearance, being a Celebrity Mastermind Champion of Champions with her love of Victoria Wood to putting the bins out and, of course, talking about her current stand up tour, Wake Up Call.

This week we start our look at Victoria Wood's dinnerladies. In many ways it is classic sitcom in its purest form but does it also break the rules occasionally?
Maxine Peake is an actor and writer who first came to public attention in 1998 as Twinkle in the Victoria Wood sitcom Dinnerladies. She went on to play Veronica in Paul Abbott's series Shameless and later became known for playing real people, including the Hillsborough campaigner Anne Williams, and Sara Rowbotham, the former health worker who exposed the sexual abuse scandal in Rochdale in 2012. Maxine was born in Bolton and after a rocky start at college – she was asked to leave her performing arts course after just two weeks but stuck it out – she won a scholarship to study at RADA. Three months before she was due to graduate she auditioned for Victoria Wood and won her first television role starring alongside Wood, Julie Walters and Anne Reid. Victoria Wood advised her to take on a diverse range of roles in order to avoid being typecast as what Maxine calls the “fat, funny northerner”. She took the advice to heart and extended her range playing Myra Hindley, Martha Costello QC in the legal drama Silk and Hamlet in a critically acclaimed production at the Royal Exchange theatre in Manchester. Maxine has also written plays including Beryl: A Love Story on Two Wheels about Beryl Burton, a Yorkshire woman who dominated 1960s cycling and held the record for the men's 12-hour time trial for two years. DISC ONE: Mersey Paradise by The Stone Roses DISC TWO: Puff the Magic Dragon by Bonnie "Prince" Billy and Red DISC THREE: Joe Hill by Paul Robeson DISC FOUR: The Four Horsemen by Aphrodite's Child DISC FIVE: Evening of Light by Nico DISC SIX: Promised Land by Joe Smooth DISC SEVEN: A Whistling Woman by The Unthanks DISC EIGHT: I Saw the Light by Todd Rundgren BOOK CHOICE: One Moonlit Night by Caradog Prichard LUXURY ITEM: A solar-powered epilator CASTAWAY'S FAVOURITE: Joe Hill by Paul Robeson Presenter: Lauren Laverne Producer: Paula McGinley
Latest Spoken Label (Author / Artist / Spoken Word Podcast) features our returning friend Rich Davenport talking about his latest book "Horsetrousers". Rich Davenport is a comedy poet, stand-up comedian and musician from exotic Bolton, in the UK. Inspired by Spike Milligan, Ogden Nash, Billy Connolly, John Cooper-Clarke, Robin Williams, Benjamin Zephanaiah, Victoria Wood, Lenny Henry, and by his friend and fellow Boltonian, the late Hovis Presley, Rich has gigged all over the UK, spreading mirth and making loud noises. No, he's never heard of him either. Rich was described in one review as a “no-nonsense Northerner,” which is ridiculous, because nonsense is his business, and business is good. Rich was first encouraged to compile a book of his poems of extreme gormlessness by Hovis Presley. After accidentally winning a couple of poetry slams, other encouraging individuals said the same thing. And now, finally, Rich's first book, GORMLESS is available now from Chinbeard books at the link below with fabulous illustrations from the marvellous Minty B. A percentage from every book will be donated to the ME Association. Horsetrousers is his second book. More details about Rich including how to purchase his book can be found here: - https://www.richdavenport.com/

Susan Calman first saw An Audience with Victoria Wood at the age of 14. It was almost by accident, but by the end of the show she had come to realise what she was destined to be. Yet Susan's career took a curious path to the comedy success that is now hers. She trained as a corporate lawyer and her work took her to the UN in Geneva and Death Row in America. In 2006 she finally gave it all up to follow in the footsteps of her comedy hero, Victoria Wood. In this essay, Susan Calman celebrates Wood's performance and writing skills, marvelling at her precise choice of language, her stage presence and, of course, The Ballad of Barry and Freda. Susan Calman made an impression very quickly with her Edinburgh Festival Fringe shows and was a finalist in the prestigious BBC New Comedy and the So You Think You're Funny Awards. Susan is now one of the country's top stand-ups, beloved by Radio 4 audiences on shows such as The News Quiz and in her own sitcom, Sisters, and her four solo stand-up shows. She has presented Woman's Hour, was a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing, is a hugely successful television presenter and has published two books. Written and read by Susan Calman Produced by Caroline Raphael for Dora Productions
