By 2050, the global population is expected to reach about 10 billion people. That means we need to find a way to feed nearly 2 billion more mouths in the next 25 years. Industrial farming practices have already destroyed countless natural ecosystems, and experts say that expanding farmland even further would have devastating consequences for the planet. In Berkeley Talks episode 227, UC Berkeley Professor Timothy Bowles and journalist Michael Grunwald discuss the impact of our current agricultural methods and debate the ways we can ramp up food production without causing more harm to the environment. “Agriculture is eating the earth,” says Grunwald, author of the forthcoming book We Are Eating the Earth: The Race to Fix Our Food System and Save Our Climate. Farmland, he says, now covers two of every five acres on the planet, “and those are acres that used to be forest and wetlands and savannas that stored a lot of carbon and sheltered a lot of biodiversity.” In order to avoid further destruction, he contends, we must produce more food on land we already farm by improving the efficiency of our existing industrial systems. While Bowles agrees that expanding farmland isn't the answer, he counters that industrial agriculture isn't either; he argues that industrial farming is detrimental to the environment and human health and perpetuates social and economic inequality. Instead, he advocates for agroecology — sustainable farming that allows farmers to work with nature to create resilient and productive food systems. “It's already happening all over the world,” says Bowles, an associate professor in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management at UC Berkeley and lead faculty director of the Berkeley Food Institute. “What hasn't been happening is the political will to make it the foundation of our food system.”“Coming back here to California, agroecology is when 1.6 million schoolchildren are eating lunches that are not taco beef sticks,” he continues, “but fruits and vegetables and whole grains that are supplied by California farms that are using climate-smart agricultural practices supported by state investments, and building on the successes of an organic agricultural industry that is currently [worth] $11 billion.”This conversation took place on April 17, 2025, and was sponsored by the Berkeley Food Institute. It was moderated by New York Times correspondent Kim Severson. Parker Bowles and Derek Williamson from cleanrefineries.com and their mission developing and building for the future of energy and clean hydrocarbon processing. From cleanrefineries.com - THE FUTURE OF HYDROCARBON PROCESSING IS HERE . . . Discover a greener, cleaner future where production is not only efficient, but also environmentally sustainable. CRI develops and markets an innovative, highly disruptive, and patented hydrocarbon processing technology. This technology is used to manufacture high margin products like asphalt, naphtha, kerosene, diesel, gasoline, aviation fuel, etc. all with net-zero greenhouse gas emissions as well as net-zero carbon dioxide. OUR TECHNOLOGY NET-ZERO EMISSIONS, INFINITE POSSIBILITIES. NET-ZERO GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS & NET-ZERO CARBON DIOXIDE Our patented technology, which has been in production since 2017, surpasses government emissions regulations by generating net-zero greenhouse gas emissions and net-zero carbon dioxide. This qualifies our project for federal and state funding, grants and tax credits through the Infrastructure Act, US Department of Energy, Green Road Initiatives, Pace Program, and more. SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS FOR A HUGE INFRASTRUCTURE NEED CRI addresses the growing demand for low carbon transportation materials by meeting the needs of highway infrastructure projects. With traditional processing facilities closing worldwide, we are positioned to provide critical products like asphalt to bridge the supply gap, particularly in the US. The massive shortage of asphalt in the country presents a significant opportunity for expansion. WHY CRI? FUELING THE FUTURE, RESPONSIBLY. CRI • 3,400 – 100,000+ BPD capacity • Net-zero greenhouse gas emissions • Closed loop system efficiently recycling process gas + lower temperature / pressure system = lower energy consumption and operating costs • Feedstock flexibility to meet desired output mix • Modular facility operates on small footprint. Easier permitting process and $75 - $150 million upfront capital expenditures enables 12 month construction TRADITIONAL REFINERIES • 150,000+ BPD capacity • Difficult / impossible new construction permitting due to political / regulatory environment • Notorious emitter of greenhouse gases and toxic greenhouse gases • Large footprint for new, large capacity refinery requiring $5 billion capital investment and 5 – 7 year construction • High operating costs, using expensive catalysts • Closures gradually shrinking universe of large scale US refineries CRI possesses a distinctive technology capable of converting hydrocarbons into fuels and asphalt binder, all while avoiding the emission of greenhouse gases. This well-proven technology has undergone over five years of successful commercial-scale operation. It has the capacity to produce a diverse range of fuels and asphalt binder, which are crucial components for meeting the infrastructure requirements of the United States. Our objective is to implement this processing technology through our direct investment and by licensing it to potential partners. "At the feet of Jesus, a 'sinful' woman found forgiveness, while a 'righteous' man missed the point. Her tears washed His feet. Her hair dried them. Her perfume anointed Him. Her love poured out extravagantly. Why? Because she knew how much she'd been forgiven. The religious leader saw only her past. Jesus saw her heart. Which are you? The one proudly keeping score, or the one humbly pouring out gratitude? It's frustrating when you're trying to reach a key decision-maker, only to be stopped by their administrative assistant. It can feel like gatekeepers intentionally block your path to closing a deal. But what if their resistance isn't just about blocking, but about recognizing when your approach simply isn't up to par? In this episode, I speak with Natasha Bowles, a seasoned gatekeeper with over 25 years of experience, to uncover what truly gets her to engage with sellers. Tune in to get the inside scoop and learn how to improve your tactics to close more deals.Meet the Gatekeeper: Natasha BowlesNatasha Bowles is the Founder of Natasha Bowles Professional Services, a staffing agency specializing in virtual and in-house administrative support. As an executive-level administrator for over 25 years, Ms. Bowles has been a gatekeeper for high-profile individuals like medical professionals, property managers, venture capitalists, and notable public figures. She's not offended by the term "gatekeeper" at all, seeing it as her job to protect the time of the people she works with. Before letting just anyone chat with her clients, she needs to be sure they're prepped, will actually bring something valuable to the table, and have something that will genuinely benefit them.Natsha shares how execs tend to get about 250 to 1,000 a day! If you're not bringing anything worthwhile, it's her job to keep you from wasting their precious time.Gatekeepers are the first line of defense for decision-makers, and if you can't get past them, you won't be talking to the executive who calls the shots. How To Get a Gatekeeper To Open Your EmailsGatekeepers see right through the holes in an executive's business, and they know when generic cold-calling emails are a total waste of their client's time.To get your emails noticed by gatekeepers, Natasha says you've gotta do your homework on the company and show that knowledge in your email. Think of it like this: if you're trying to get an investor to fund your pizza place but emailing someone who only invests in tech, it screams you didn't bother to do your research. In your emails, include things like who the relevant department head is, some stats, a problem the company is facing, and why they need to know about your product. Show some initiative and prove you've looked into the company and why you genuinely believe your solution can help them. Also, don't be rude to the gatekeeper! They'll remember it, and it could come back to bite you. Natasha shares a personal story about dealing with a rude client and what happened. Is It Possible To Go Around the Gatekeeper? It's possible to bypass the gatekeeper. But honestly, it will be tough because executives usually don't pay much attention to their own emails. They rely on the gatekeeper to handle it because their time is just that valuable.Natasha points out that even if you do get lucky, you might still end up talking to the gatekeeper anyway.Gatekeepers Can Move Deals ForwardYou don't always have to talk directly to the CEO to get a deal moving. Gatekeepers and executives often have a strong relationship, and sometimes the gatekeeper can even be given the green light to make decisions if the CEO trusts them enough. The gatekeeper might actually be the person you need to convince to close a deal. So, do your best to win them over when you reach out. Find that sweet spot where you show you know your stuff and how it can benefit the company."Protecting my client's time is my biggest task. I need to be certain that anyone wanting to speak with them is prepared, will add value to their day, and has something genuinely beneficial to offer....

The transformative power of faith takes center stage as Zack Bowles, Executive Director of Resurrection House in Chickasha, Oklahoma, shares his journey from trucking business owner to rescue mission leader. Serving a rural community of 16,000, Resurrection House proves that small towns can address homelessness effectively without merely relocating people to larger cities. Their holistic approach includes emergency shelter, a year-long Life Skills Institute, and a six-month work readiness program, all anchored in strong relationships with local churches to create lasting support networks.Zack shares stories of incredible transformation, including a former fentanyl and heroin addict who now leads their work readiness program, praying, "God, use me like the drugs used me." We also dive into the heartbreak of relapses and the challenges of leadership, revealing the deep compassion that fuels their mission. Their work goes beyond providing shelter—it's about fostering a place of hope and healing where people can discover their worth in God's eyes.To learn more about TRM, Click Here!To support TRM, Click Here! Tangier was a magnet for artists, writers, musicians, and political exiles throughout the mid-20th century, amongst them the writers Paul Bowles and William Burroughs From 1924 to 1956 the city operated as an international zone under the joint administration of several European powers. This status created an environment of legal ambiguity, which, combined with the city's strategic location at the crossroads of Africa and Europe, made it a haven for those seeking escape from the constraints of conventional society The zone had a sense of lawlessness and freedom, attracting a diverse mix of expatriates, spies, smugglers, and avant-garde intellectuals. The city's permissive attitude towards drugs, homosexuality, and radical political thought made it a particularly alluring destination for members of the counterculture. Composer and writer Paul Bowles, settled there and drew members of the Beat Generation to the city to be inspired, to complete their projects and to live the Moroccan dream. Few lived in human dialogue with the locals, operating rather as economically priveleged colonial bohemians William Burroughs' time in Tangier in the 1950s deeply influenced his novel Naked Lunch. Burroughs saw the city as a place where the constraints of Western morality could be discarded in favor of a more experimental and uninhibited lifestyle. He christened it THE INTERZONE Although the Tnagier International Zone officially ceased to exist in 1956, its mythos lived on in literature, music, and the enduring image of Tangier as a place where the world's outsiders could find a home Multimedia artist and curator Abdelaziz Taleb, director of The Arab Media Lab Project has taken a deep dive into the Interzone - both its reality and its myth, exploring the blurred line between the two. He came to the Bureau to talk about it, the often untold influence of Moroccans on the Beats, and the mystery of Tangier. Since the dawn of the smartphone era, everybody has carried a camera with them at all times. If anything, there are too many photos and videos being recorded at concerts. We all know the annoyance of being distracted from the music by outstretched arms holding up glowing screens in front of the stage. During the early years of the Bay Area punk scene, however, there was usually only one person with a camera documenting the action – Murray Bowles. Back when this aggressively self-marginalized genre was relegated to sweaty basements, decrepit warehouses, and outdoor wastelands, Murray could consistently be found in the mosh pit, snapping photos of the glorious chaos erupting around him. As the scene's popularity grew, buoyed by local institutions like all-ages club 924 Gilman and Maximumnrocknroll magazine, Murray's images became the defining visual documentation of a punk rock renaissance. He was even immortalized (in cartoon form) on the cover of Green Day's “Dookie,” the biggest selling punk album of all time. “Hail Murray: The Bay Area Punk Photography of Murray Bowles, 1982-1995” (Last Gasp) is the first book to compile his explosive photographic catalogue and pay tribute to the man behind the lens. This episode features an interview with Anna Brown, a lifelong friend of Murray who compiled this posthumous retrospective. https://lastgasp.com/products/hail-murray Don't forget to follow the East Bay Yesterday Substack for updates on events, boat tours, exhibits, and other local history news. https://substack.com/@eastbayyesterday Donate to keep this show alive: https://www.patreon.com/eastbayyesterday

Democratic elections ideally involve discussions of the challenges and opportunities facing the nation, and of the policies that might best address them. Yet real-world elections rarely seem to fulfil those hopes. One of the alternative realities found in many countries today is the politics of clientelism, where candidates effectively buy votes by rendering services to particular individuals, families, or other groups within society. How can systems where such practices are entrenched be nudged towards more so-called programmatic competition based on competing policy visions?Alan Renwick is joined by Dr Jeremy Bowles, Lecturer in Comparative Politics at UCL Political Science.Mentioned in this episode:Bowles, J. and Larreguy, H. (2025) ‘Who Debates, Who Wins? At-Scale Experimental Evidence on the Supply of Policy Information in a Liberian Election', American Political Science Review UCL's Department of Political Science and School of Public Policy offers a uniquely stimulating environment for the study of all fields of politics, including international relations, political theory, human rights, public policy-making and administration. The Department is recognised for its world-class research and policy impact, ranking among the top departments in the UK on both the 2021 Research Excellence Framework and the latest Guardian rankings.
