Recently Beach Energy got the go ahead to begin producing gas from its Enterprise project off Victoria's Otway Coast, the first new gas extraction approved in a decade. At the same time, this area of the ocean is slated for some of the first offshore wind farms in Australia. What does all this mean for fighting climate change? What about the marine environment? To find out, we chat to Dr Kat Lucas-Healey from Environment Victoria.Plus, it's Radiothon, and we listen back to some of our favourite moments from the oceans in the last year. Ferry Corsten is a titan of the Trance scene, and his tracks and remixes have been the soundtrack for an entire generation of ravers for over a quarter of a century. He exploded onto the scene with his anthemic "Out Of The Blue," igniting a fierce bidding war among top record labels and cementing his status as one of the most sought-after remixers in the industry. An artist who has unwaveringly stayed true to his uplifting sound, Ferry, in our conversation, tells us about building his first studio at a young age, how his huge anthems came together in the studio, his approach to remixing and the exhilarating global tour of his What The F concept.FOLLOW US Instagram: @houseculturenetSpotify: House Culture - Perfect PlaylistYouTube: @houseculturenet|| Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseculture. One in ten of Australia's sharks and rays are at risk of extinction, and globally shark populations are declining. The biggest reason: people eating them.In this episode, we chat to two shark experts about what we need to do to ensure sharks survive. First, Dr Adam Stow from Macquarie University talks about his research looking at what's really in flake. Then, Dr Jordan Goetze, Adjunt Professor at Curtin University, explains how marine protected areas are helping some sharks, but we have to do more.PS: If you enjoy Out Of The Blue, please help us stay on air by making a donation to 3CR's Radiothon. Note d'intention de Raphaël Guattari. Kenny Garrett has been playing for more than 40 years. Originally from Detroit, he joined the Duke Ellington Orchestra in the late 70s, when it was being run by Ellington's son Mercer. He also played with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, and with Donald Byrd, Woody Shaw, and Freddie Hubbard. He was a member of a young lions group put together by Blue Note Records in the 80s called Out Of The Blue that also included the late drummer Ralph Peterson, and he was already recording as a leader when he was invited to join Miles Davis's band in 1987. He played on the album Amandla, and was part of the Davis band all the way until the end of Miles's life in 1991. Miles Davis even made a very rare guest appearance on one of Garrett's albums, Prisoner Of Love, from 1989.Kenny Garrett's discography as a leader has taken him in a lot of really interesting directions. His 1995 album Triology, with Brian Blade on drums and either Charnett Moffett or Kiyoshi Kitagawa on bass, is a really intense, high-energy record that kind of marries bebop language to post-Ornette Coleman freedom, but the real key to the whole thing is the way he executes these really complex melodies on tunes like John Coltrane's "Giant Steps," Wynton Marsalis's "Delfeayo's Dilemma," and Mulgrew Miller's "Pressing The Issue." It's a tremendous showcase for his technical command of the saxophone. But the album that first got me interested in his work was Beyond The Wall, a 2006 release that was a collaboration with Pharoah Sanders that also featured Mulgrew Miller on piano, Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Robert Hurst on bass, Brian Blade on drums, and on some tracks there were strings and harp and Chinese instruments and a six-member vocal ensemble. It's not spiritual jazz in the way that term is used now, and it's not world music, it's entirely its own thing, and it's particularly fascinating because you might not think of Kenny Garrett and Pharoah Sanders having that much in common, artistically speaking, but they really did. They also recorded a live album together that came out in 2008. Garrett talks about Pharoah a lot in the interview you're about to hear. And Kenny Garrett's latest album is going to surprise a lot of people. It's called Who Killed AI, and it's a collaboration with Svoy, an electronic music producer. Garrett plays alto and soprano sax on it, and all the rest of the music is made with synths and programmed drums. Even the horns are multi-tracked and fed through effects at times. It's structured as kind of a suite — the first track is called “Ascendence,” and there are also pieces called “Transcendence,” “Divergence” and “Convergence.” But there's also a really beautiful version of “My Funny Valentine,” which lays the ballad melody over these kind of shimmering keyboard sounds and a hard drum 'n' bass beat. It's not at all what I was expecting when I was told that there was a new Kenny Garrett album on the way.I'm really glad I had the chance to talk to Kenny Garrett. We discussed his history with Miles Davis and with Woody Shaw, his early musical upbringing, his work with Pharoah Sanders, his approach to synthesizing genres and musics from around the world, and much more. I think you're going to enjoy this conversation.

https://notesonfilm1.com/2024/02/12/thinking-aloud-about-film-out-of-the-blue-chen-kun-hou-taiwan-1983/ We continue our discussion of the GOLDEN DECADES: CINEMATIC MASTERS OF THE GOLDEN HORSE AWARDS with a chat on OUT OF THE BLUE (Chen Kun-Hou, Taiwan, 1983). A fascinating film to discuss in relation to all our previous podcasts on Taiwanese Cinema and Hou Hsiao-hsien; a film directed by Chen Kun-hou, the cinematographer on Hou Hsiao-hsien's early films such as THE GREEN, GREEN GRASS OF HOME (1982) and THE BOYS FROM FENGKUEI (1983). Chen Kun-hou is also the cinematographer on HE NEVER GIVES UP (LEE HSING, 1978), and of course Hou Hsia-hsien was the co-writer on GROWING PAINS (1983) and this one. These films also share writer, Chu T'ien-wen (the screenwriter) who went on to co-write most of Hou Hsia-hsien's films, this one based on a novel by Chu T'ien-wen's sister, Chu T'ien-hsin. Collectively ork that evokes an outpouring of creativity but as part of a circle of collaborators. And this particular film seems a turning point from the healthy realist cinema that was and the comedies and musicals that followed to what would become known as New Taiwanese Cinema. A key film, released just after BOYS FROM FENGKUEI; A film that takes its time, the camera lingers, yet never feels long, a story gently told about young love in trouble, filial duty, ties to family, small transgressions. Aspects bring to mind BEFORE SUNRISE (Richard Linklater, 1995) Arguably, one can't understand New Taiwanese Cinema well without having a context; and this series is a shortcut to that context, the virtue is that it's preselected, the films that that national industry thought the best; and within THAT, OUT OF THE BLUE is arguably the key film of that transition.

Nic Yulo returns to the #ReadingWithYourKids #Podcast to celebrate her brand new #PictureBook, "Out of the Blue." Nic tells us about her creative process, inspirations, and the message behind her latest book. “Out Of The Blue” revolves around Coral, a small and quiet girl on a school field trip to an aquarium, where she discovers a tiny, overlooked creature named Kraken. As the plot unfolds, Coral learns to embrace her uniqueness and find her voice. Nic reveals that her love for the ocean and fascination with marine life inspired the main characters of the book, Coral and Kraken. As a self-proclaimed nerd, she shares her admiration for octopuses and the various species she researched while creating the story. The desire to portray the beauty and mystery of the ocean influenced the inclusion of marine creatures in the narrative. We also talk about being seen, which is a prevalent topic in "Out of the Blue." Nic discusses how she wanted to explore the feelings of invisibility and how they can resonate with readers, especially children. The character Coral's journey of self-discovery and gaining confidence is a relatable experience for introverted kids and those who feel overlooked. Nick also speaks about her artistic journey, sharing how she initially considered herself primarily an illustrator before a painting professor encouraged her to explore writing. Nic reveals her love for creating various forms of art, including filmmaking, game writing, and more. She shares her excitement for branching narrative games, where choices made by players impact the story. Drawing parallels between interactive storytelling in games and interactive reading experiences for kids, Nick emphasizes the importance of engaging children's imagination. Between the fact that I'm a bit overscheduled next week & I've loved hearing from listeners who enjoyed the first installment in this series, I decided to take advantage of a free morning to edit & upload this episode early! Releasing just in time for Dennis Hopper's birthday on the 17th (& mine a couple of days later), welcome to the second installment of our three-part series devoted to the actor. Filled with analysis & appreciation of some of his most popular films & performances from a panel of seven outstanding guests, plus excerpts from a lifetime of interviews with Hopper voiced by yours truly, this episode covers the decade that made him an icon all over again with the film BLUE VELVET. I guess technically you could call this Dennis Hopper's Blue Period! Centered on the 1980s, we open with the controversial OUT OF THE BLUE & then talk about his great comeback year of 1986, & the films BLUE VELVET, RIVER'S EDGE, & HOOSIERS. Featuring great stories about seeing these films with audiences &/or way too young, plus insights from Hopper on directing actors & learning about women, along with Lynch's chronicle of casting him to play Frank Booth, this has been our most hotly anticipated release since I mentioned this project, so I hope you dig it. Welcome to “Not Couple Goals” where co-hosts Allie Nelson and Tyler McCarthy do a deep dive into a different ridiculous romantic thriller from the vantage point of their long-term relationship. Allie, a TV writer/producer and actress, has an affinity for romantic thrillers, the more salacious the better. Tyler, an entertainment reporter and critic, often finds himself drawn in despite his better judgment. Join them as they explore all the ways it's possible to love too hard… like WAY too hard. In this episode, Allie and Tyler tackle the 2022 movie “Out Of The Blue” written and directed by Neil LaBute and starring Diane Kruger, Ray Nicholson and Hank Azaria, although they don't know why. Join them as they discuss how this movie may as well have taken place in the 30s, how short Ray falls of his famous dad's charisma and the fine line between homages and ripoffs. If you're a fan of the word “bucolic,” you're going to love this one. Special thanks to Mallory Johns for the introduction music. Welcome to episode 68 of the Blue Light Leavers Podcast Today, I've got the absolute pleasure of talking with Gareth Keyte. Gareth is a former Police Officer and Royal Marine Commando, and in this episode he talks us through his policing career where he reached the rank of Detective Inspector. Whilst serving, Gareth had identified a particular process within his organisation that resulted in him having to report the issue to, and subsequently challenge a senior officer, who then made it his mission to do all he could to make Gareth's life as difficult as possible, in every possible way. It's an extraordinary and heart breaking story, and Gareth goes on to explain the impact on his mental health and the signs and symptoms that manifested themselves, as a result of the behaviour of the individual and the lack of support of the organisation. This resulted in him having to leave on ill-health retirement after 21 years service, and he talks us through his struggle with the loss of identity, his ongoing recovery and treatment, and how he's since gone on to re-train and create Oxygen Coaching Company in partnership with his wife, Dawn. He talks about the importance of being proactive in supporting your own mental health, and he talks about the importance of not relying on an overwhelmed organisation to provide the right support and how damaging the 'big boys don't cry' culture is. He also shows us that there really is life after policing and that it's a mindset shift, by learning to reject 'learned helplessness.' We also go on to talk about reactive versus proactive mental health support and what can and should be in place? This is an extraordinary interview and Gareth is so honest and open about his struggles and the challenges he's had, but it's so inspiring and he's gone on to do some amazing things, including being asked to deliver a keynote speech by senior police leaders, to the National Police Chiefs' Council and the Disabled Police Association about his experience and challenging and changing the toxic culture in policing. In this episode I'm talking with Jo Morris. Jo is a Blue Light Leavers community member and also a member of The Academy and she's a real success story. In the last episode we spoke to Jo, Jules and James with regards to our amazing collaboration with FDM Group and Jo is a former police officer who has been through their selection process and successfully passed the training, and she's recently started a fantastic new role consulting in a Project Manager role within the Finance sector. We talk through her policing experience and reasons for leaving, and she's incredibly open and honest about what happened. We talk about how she felt and the impact the misconduct process had on her, and we talked through the first call that we had and what happened next. She talks us through the whole FDM application process that she went through and how she felt when she got that call to say she'd been successful in the application process and assessment day, and then we go through the training in detail and how intense it was and the challenges that she felt were part of that process. We talk about her placement and I really do think she's got an incredibly exciting future ahead of her. This is a brilliant interview and I'm incredibly grateful to her for being so honest and open. If you're thinking of leaving policing or other emergency service and unsure of your options, your transferable skills, the careers you can move to, the impact on your mental health, losing your identity, how to write a CV or use LinkedIn, then this event is for you. Lorna is the founder of MyOhMy Wedding and MyOhMy Events and in this episode, we talk about her 15 years career in the police service as a Crime Scene Investigator through to a senior staff role and about her reasons for leaving, some of the incidents she attended, and the challenges that created. In this week's Book Club podcast, I'm talking to two of the brave souls who turn recent political dramas into the sort of quickly written books we might call the second draft of history. I'm joined by the FT's Sebastian Payne, author of The Fall of Boris Johnson, and our own James Heale, co-author of a Liz Truss biography, Out Of The Blue, which notoriously was so rapidly overtaken by events that she was out before it was. They tell me how they disentangle their duties in their day jobs as political reporters from what they owe their book readers, how differently sources will speak to authors than journalists, what the day to day press got wrong – and whether they think history will look more kindly on their subjects than the front pages.

Have you ever wanted your carefree, blissful poolside tan interrupted by an assaultive collection of hateful bile? Then sit back in your lounge chair and apply the sun screen because we've got a show for you: this week's episode has us parsing 2000's witty and strange British crime flick Sexy Beast! But before we catapult face first off the diving board, we snack on an endlessly sumptuous Blue Plate Special, covering topics as varied as Dennis Hopper's unlikely 1980 punk masterpiece Out of the Blue, new release Bullet Train and a spirited post-screening reaction it inspired, and the outright cancelled release of Batgirl and the larger restructuring of Warner Brothers and HBO Max it foretells. We finally get around to executing this week's job, promoting a discussion of the British crime film and its narrative/aesthetic interests, how Jonathan Glazer's direction upsets them, and endlessly delight in Sir Ben Kingsley's immediately iconic performance as the villainous Don Logan. We spoke with Eli about how he discovered his one man musical show while giving himself permission to show up and follow his JOY. After, he rediscovered his love for singing, leading him to create Out of the Blue, a show that's "infused with music and humor, a heart-warming and inspiring true story celebrating the resilience of the human spirit in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds."After all, says Eli, a life well-lived — filled with love and miracles — is worth everything. PART ONE:Paul and Scott talk about Pearl Snap Studios, contrabassoons, penny whistles, and bagpipes. PART TWO:The guys remember Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, who recently passed away, chat about Taylor's previous gig playing for Alanis Morissette, and talk about why Debbie Gibson deserves serious respect. PART THREE:Our in-depth conversation with Debbie GibsonABOUT DEBBIE GIBSON:You may know Debbie Gibson for her late 1980s hit pop singles “Only in My Dreams,” “Shake Your Love,” “Out of the Blue,” and the chart-toppers “Foolish Beat” and “Lost in Your Eyes.” What you might not realize is that Debbie wrote all those hits completely solo while still a teenager. At the age of 16 she became the youngest artist ever to have written, produced, and performed a #1 single on the Billboard charts. She once shared the ASCAP Songwriter of the Year honor with Bruce Springsteen, the same year she was nominated for Best Pop Female Vocalist by the American Music Awards and Favorite Female Music Performer by the People's Choice Awards. Now more than 35 years into her career, Debbie has sold over 16 million records worldwide, and has released 10 studio albums. Her most recent, The Body Remembers, was released last August, and is her first US studio album in 20 years to feature all original songs, including a new duet version of “Lost in Your Eyes” with Joey McIntyre of New Kids on the Block. Though she was named one of Billboard magazine's Top 60 Female Artists of All Time, Debbie has also found success in musical theater, starring in Les Miserables and Cabaret on Broadway, and in the London West End production of Grease, among more than a dozen other productions. Never a pre-packaged pop invention of record label executives, Debbie was a musical prodigy who has continued to make her mark as a singer, songwriter, producer, musician, actor, and entrepreneur.
