It is about finding that Resilience and strength to say, “Okay, I'm gonna show up another day. I'm just gonna show up another day." And then the next day and the next day. ~ Maria Johnson, a.k.a. Girl Gone Blind How often in a crisis do you think to yourself, “I just can't do this anymore”? When a challenge hits us with a sucker punch, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and defeated. Crisis changes life in an instant, taking away, sometimes permanently, what we knew or believed to be true. Being exhausted and wanting to give up is a common response. That's why it's important to break down our challenges in manageable chunks. It may be impossible to imagine living permanently in the current state of upheaval, so don't try. Instead, just show up, if not for a day, for the next 15 minutes. This week's guest, Maria Johnson, a.k.a. Girl Gone Blind, lost her sight at age 50, changing her whole life. And while Maria admits to sitting “in the hallway of denial for a long time,” she eventually realized that she didn't have to tackle blindness all at once. She just had to show up, one day at a time. And if a day is too much, follow Mary Fran's advice and live life as a 15 Minute Master–take it 15 minutes at a time. Tune into this week's episode of the Brilliantly Resilient podcast to hear more from the Brilliant Maria Johnson. Let's be Brilliantly Resilient together! XO, KS & MFB
Today's show is another in a series of bonus episodes each featuring one of the fantastic talks given by my participants in The Big Talk Academy as a part of our Virtual Showcase. This showcase is the culmination of their hard work as they cross the finish line to becoming certified speakers. These episodes give you a peek behind the curtain to witness the amazing Big Talks presented, and also give you exclusive access to my live feedback and direction I give to each speaker immediately following their performances. This week's episode features Maria Johnson and her talk, Choosing Possibility Over Disability. In 2013, Maria experienced severe vision loss in both eyes and was diagnosed with a rare condition called Lebers Hereditary Optic Neuropathy - LHON. This diagnosis caused her to become legally blind in a matter of months. It also led her to create and launch her website and blog “Girl Gone Blind” in early 2014. She is a mom of two kids, group fitness instructor, blogger, podcaster, and speaker living in San Diego, CA. In her touching and powerful Big Talk, Maria shares her own journey of choosing possibility over disability when she lost her sight. She walks us through how she went from the consuming devastation of her sudden disability to the sparks of strength and determination she found to make it through. Life will blindside us all at some point. However, you always have a choice. You can let the situation crush you or you can get up and crush it.

Focus on Fitness is all about doing it when you can and hey, why not? Maria Johnson, aka Girl Gone Blind, joins Jeff Thompson in the Blind Abilities Studio to Focus on Fitness and how you can incorporate little nuggets of exercise without throwing your schedule off and being able to work out within your own time and space. In this introductory episode #2 of 4, of the Focus on Fitness series, Maria and Jeff introduce us to Squats. This is where you lower your hips from a standing position and then stand back up. Maria and Jeff want you to be safe and suggest hanging onto a stable fixture when exploring the movement of a Squat. This is to give you an idea of the motion that a Squat consists of and to give you a sense of the group of muscles involved. This week we had a great time bantering with Maria Johnson, aka Girl Gone Blind -- so much so that it turned out to be our longest episode to date! We talk with her about her eye condition, her experience with losing her sight, the importance of blogging and social media, technology, and how it helped with her transition and recovery.
Even though I love having a positive attitude and try to look on the "sunny side of life", the reality is that there are just hard times after losing your sight. From dealing with emotional issues to learning how to do new skills, we can face many struggles after our vision begins to take a hike. And, many times, we experience these struggles in silent, not wanting to appear weak or not knowing how to say it. Today, I am joined by Maria Johnson from the popular blog "Girl Gone Blind" to discuss her journey of sight loss and provide some encouragement if you are facing these things. For full show notes, including links to read Maria's blog and find her on social media, visit http://lifeaftersightloss.com/013Don't forget to subscribe to the podcast if you haven't already!
