When Julie Brown was being poached from one company to another, they asked what she was currently earning. She told them a number she wanted to be true — what she deserved, not what she was making. They didn't blink. That's how she spent 17 years as one of the highest-paid professionals in a male-dominated field before realising that the secret lay in building relationships. She's turned that into a book called This Sh!t Works, and a speaking career with keynote speeches 99.9% of audiences want to hear again. Turns out, the sh!t does work.We talked about why everyone keeps asking the question they hate being asked, how a woman complimenting her flowered pants on the street turned into the perfect lesson on what networking was always supposed to feel like, and what it actually takes to be someone people remember after the room clears.Links to learn more about Julie Brown:WebsiteLinkedInAny thoughts? Scientology is often called the ‘celebrity religion’, popularised by names like Tom Cruise, John Travolta and Nancy Cartwright. Recognised by its long list of scandals and out-of-this-world belief system, Scientology sits in contrast to what many would class as a religion in modern society. So, what lies beneath the surface of the embattled billion-dollar organisation? Who is it’s founder, L Ron. Hubbard? And, how did Scientology turn into a money-making empire? What happens when you mix a sex-positive grandma, a childhood spent figure-skating on frozen lakes, and a lifetime of dismantling religious shame… with modern parenting, porn, and kids with iPads? In this episode of Skin and Soul: Beyond the Pale, I sit with Dr. Tina Schermer Sellers — therapist, educator, and author of Sex, God & the Conservative Church and Shameless Parenting — for a wildly honest, surprisingly funny conversation about raising shame-free kids in an over-sexualized world. We talk about babies discovering their genitals in the bath, toddlers who just want to hug everyone, and why “hands in your pants at the dinner table” is not a crisis but an invitation to teach boundaries without shaming desire. Tina walks us through what real “family life education” looks like from 0–18, why one hundred tiny, awkward one-minute chats beat the one Big Talk, and how to start when you feel like you're years too late. We go there with porn, phones and tablets, patriarchy, boys' right to say no too, and how to help our kids recognize exploitation instead of becoming numb to it. We also talk about re-parenting ourselves, healing the little one inside who never got these conversations, and the strange grace that can show up with aging parents and dementia. This one is for the exhausted, tender, secretly terrified parents who still want their kids to know: your body is yours, your pleasure is good, and you never have to trade your soul to belong.

In this episode, I'm super excited for you to hear from Gracia Sotomayor. You may remember Gracia from her appearance on the podcast last November in Episode 707, where we talked about pursuing your dreams, no matter how unconventional. Born in Lima, Peru, Gracia discovered artistic cycling through a magazine photo and was captivated by the concentration and control required. With no resources available in Spanish, she taught herself and eventually moved to Germany to master the sport. She has competed in the UCI Cycling World Championships and became the first person to translate the official rulebook into Spanish. As an ambassador for artistic cycling, Gracia has promoted the sport across Latin America and been featured in international media. Through her speaking, she shares how embracing inner power, taking unconventional paths, and helping others can lead to personal transformation and lasting impact. In this episode of The Sisterhood of Sweat, we sit down with conversation expert and storyteller Kalina Silverman, the creator of the global movement Make Big Talk and author of the new book Big Talk: How to Skip the Small Talk, Make Meaningful Connections, and Enrich Your Life. Kalina's journey started with something many people quietly experience—loneliness. While away at college, she realized she was surrounded by people yet still struggling to form meaningful friendships. Instead of accepting surface-level conversations, she began asking deeper questions that moved past small talk and opened the door to real connection. That experiment turned into a viral video series and eventually a global movement encouraging people to ask better questions and build deeper relationships. Today, Make Big Talk events and conversations are happening around the world, helping people connect in a more authentic and human way. Kalina's work also took on a powerful new dimension in 2025 when she partnered with GoFundMe to highlight survivors of devastating Los Angeles wildfires. Traveling to burned neighborhoods and damaged homes, she asked one simple but powerful question: What did you lose? The emotional conversations that followed introduced the world to survivors like Walt, Willie, and Dorothy. These raw, human stories spread across social media, generating millions of views and helping raise more than $2 million in donations for recovery efforts. The project earned Kalina a Shorty Impact Award for Emergency Relief storytelling. With the release of her new book Big Talk, Kalina is helping people learn how to move beyond surface-level conversations and create deeper connections in friendships, relationships, work, and everyday life. Her work has attracted the attention of some of the biggest names in media, including Maria Shriver, Anderson Cooper, and Katie Couric, who are all fans of her work and the powerful impact of meaningful conversation. In this conversation, we explore why small talk often leaves people feeling disconnected, how asking better questions can transform relationships, and why authentic storytelling can create real change in communities. What we discuss in this episode: • Why small talk often keeps people feeling isolated • How one question can unlock meaningful connection • The moment Kalina realized deeper conversations change lives • How Make Big Talk grew from a college idea into a global movement • The emotional wildfire survivor stories that helped raise millions in relief • Why meaningful conversations are more important than ever in a digital world • Practical ways to connect with anyone—even if you're shy or socially anxious Kalina's work reminds us that connection isn't about saying the perfect thing. It's about creating space for honesty, curiosity, and empathy. If you've ever struggled with awkward conversations, felt lonely in a crowd, or wished relationships felt deeper and more meaningful, this episode will completely change how you think about talking to people. Big Talk is back for 2026! The Iraq War was one of the most consequential political decisions of the 21st century. In this episode of Big Talk, we trace the road from 9/11 to the invasion of Iraq, unpacking how the trauma of that moment reshaped American and Australian foreign policy overnight and how George W. Bush framed the world in binaries of “good versus evil”. This episode takes us from Bush's election all the way through to the fateful, pre-emptive 'mission accomplished' speech delivered after the initial invasion. Picking up where we left off in Part One, we now deep dive into the sectarian violence that unfolded in Iraq and layout a timeline on how they attempted to implement democratic processes as well as Saddam Hussein's trial. We also look at the collapse of the America's central justification for the war: no weapons of mass destruction found. We then jump into Bush's re-election and changing public opinion internationally. After the assassination of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk, both Republicans and Democrats called for unity and understanding — but polarizing rhetoric has continued to escalate. President Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other White House officials have vowed to target the “radical left” for being politically violent. Democratic officials have warned that the White House may try to use the assassination to suppress speech. Those fears may have been realized when ABC was threatened over late-night host Jimmy Kimmel's comments about conservatives' reaction to Charlie Kirk's killing. Brendan Carr, the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, pressured the network to pull Kimmel off the air indefinitely. How do Americans feel about a government agency censoring speech that they don't agree with? Whose responsibility is it to turn down the temperature when it comes to rhetoric and polarization? David Greene worked with country singer Ketch Secor of the band Old Crow Medicine Show to produce a music documentary called Louder Than Guns. Greene spent time with Secor, touring across the country and hearing Americans' reflections on gun violence and gun rights. When FOX News host Trey Gowdy said that Americans should have a conversation about preventing more gun violence, his fellow conservatives said he should be ashamed. How do we stop talking past each other during conversations about guns and create an open dialogue? Are Americans too enraged by each other to ever experience unity? This week, a listener asked Left, Right and Center about America's history of political violence and if our panel thinks anything has changed.
