While many river runners see Lake Powell and Glen Canyon Dam as the leading threat to the Colorado River overall and to the Grand Canyon, there is a voice that wants to keep Lake Powell in place and full of water. Glen Canyon National Recreation Area will not maintain the primary boat takeout for Cataract Canyon this year. Their announcement last month was a huge blow to members of the river running community. They say a 'no maintenance' strategy from federal managers puts the immediate future of running Cataract – a stretch of the Colorado River important for scenic values, tourism and science – into question. // And later, the Weekly News Reel! Sophia Fisher of The Times-Independent reports on Moab's tourism industry, the passage of the TRT bill, and a proposed resort northwest of Ken's Lake. Alison Harford of the Moab Sun News discusses the goals of Grand County Sheriff Jamison Wiggins, ongoing rebuilding efforts after the 2021 flood, and a new oral history exhibit at the Moab Museum. // Show Notes: // Photo: Continued downcutting at the North Wash Boat Ramp, the primary takeout for river runners at Cataract Canyon. National Parks Traveler: Glen Canyon NRA's Thirst For Water

Lake Powell long has been the shimmering heart of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Utah and Arizona, but it's not the only asset of the NRA that covers 1.25 million acres.  This is Kurt Repanshek, your host at the National Parks Traveler. Last year I had the good fortune to visit Glen Canyon NRA twice –- once in May to kayak Lake Powell -- and then in July when I backpacked into the park's backcountry to not just admire its beauty but watch efforts to reverse the spread of invasive vegetation in the park. But not all is well with the NRA. A drought said to be the longest in 1,200 years has left Lake Powell at its lowest level since it began filling in 1963. It reached its full impoundment in 1980. But shrinking snowpack levels in the Colorado River drainage in recent years has failed to generate enough runoff into Lake Powell to more than offset the water running through the hydroelectric generating station in the Glen Canyon Dam. To discuss the state of Lake Powell, and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area as a whole, we've invited Glen Canyon Superintendent Bill Shott to join us. We'll be back in a minute with the superintendent.

In recent years there has been a movement of sorts to rebrand units of the National Park System as “national parks,” a movement motivated in large part by the economic boost such a redesignation is hoped to have. In New Mexico there’s a group that’s opposed to turning Bandelier National Monument into Bandelier National Park. We discuss that issue with Tom Ribe, executive director of Caldera Action, a nonprofit advocacy group in New Mexico. And we continue our series on how the health of the Colorado River impacts Canyonlands National Park and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Utah. To get a better understanding of the river economics in play, we talk with Megan Lawson, an economist with Headwaters Economics.

If there's one place in our travels that has seemed a nearly hidden gem -- a place where hardly anyone goes, yet is full of incredible beauty -- it's the confluence of the northern tip of Grand Canyon National Park, where miles of the Colorado River are protected before they enter the canyon, and the southern tip of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. It's a serene place called Lee's Ferry, where the Colorado gently winds through vermillion cliffs. Rafters hit the first rapid here to begin the 88-mile journey to Phantom Ranch, the historic camping oasis nestled nearly a mile below the rim of the Grand Canyon. Wild horses roam the hills and can be spotted frolicking in the riverbed. But alongside the glorious beauty of the red rock set against the dark river and blue skies, long before it was the launching point for Grand Canyon rafters this historic place was the gateway to Arizona. It's the only place along the river for 700 miles that the riverbanks are directly accessible by land, making it an ideal crossing point, and today, the only place where you can get down into the deep cuts of the Colorado without hiking in. On this episode of America's National Parks, Lee's Ferry, part of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.

Taking control of your life and becoming responsible for your well-being, can lower the risk of age related disease. Second guest, Justin Glasgow (Lake Powell, UT), Interpretive Ranger Supervisor with Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, discusses Glen Canyon, a 1.2 million acre reserve.
