fWotD Episode 2817: Andrew Jackson Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Monday, 20 January 2025 is Andrew Jackson.Andrew Jackson (March 15, 1767 – June 8, 1845) was the seventh president of the United States, serving from 1829 to 1837. Before his presidency, he gained fame as a general in the U. S. Army and served in both houses of the U. S. Congress. Sometimes praised as an advocate for working Americans and for preserving the union of states, his political philosophy became the basis for the Democratic Party. Jackson has been criticized for his racist policies, particularly regarding Native Americans.Jackson was born in the colonial Carolinas before the American Revolutionary War. He became a frontier lawyer and married Rachel Donelson Robards. He briefly served in the U. S. House of Representatives and the U. S. Senate, representing Tennessee. After resigning, he served as a justice on the Tennessee Superior Court from 1798 until 1804. Jackson purchased a property later known as the Hermitage, becoming a wealthy planter who owned hundreds of African American slaves during his lifetime. In 1801, he was appointed colonel of the Tennessee militia and was elected its commander. He led troops during the Creek War of 1813–1814, winning the Battle of Horseshoe Bend and negotiating the Treaty of Fort Jackson that required the indigenous Creek population to surrender vast tracts of present-day Alabama and Georgia. In the concurrent war against the British, Jackson's victory at the Battle of New Orleans in 1815 made him a national hero. He later commanded U. S. forces in the First Seminole War, which led to the annexation of Florida from Spain. Jackson briefly served as Florida's first territorial governor before returning to the Senate. He ran for president in 1824. He won a plurality of the popular and electoral vote, but no candidate won the electoral majority. With the help of Henry Clay, the House of Representatives elected John Quincy Adams as president. Jackson's supporters alleged that there was a "corrupt bargain" between Adams and Clay and began creating a new political coalition that became the Democratic Party in the 1830s.Jackson ran again in 1828, defeating Adams in a landslide despite issues such as his slave trading and his "irregular" marriage. In 1830, he signed the Indian Removal Act. This act, which has been described as ethnic cleansing, displaced tens of thousands of Native Americans from their ancestral homelands east of the Mississippi and resulted in thousands of deaths. Jackson faced a challenge to the integrity of the federal union when South Carolina threatened to nullify a high protective tariff set by the federal government. He threatened the use of military force to enforce the tariff, but the crisis was defused when it was amended. In 1832, he vetoed a bill by Congress to reauthorize the Second Bank of the United States, arguing that it was a corrupt institution. After a lengthy struggle, the Bank was dismantled. In 1835, Jackson became the only president to pay off the national debt. After leaving office, Jackson supported the presidencies of Martin Van Buren and James K. Polk, as well as the annexation of Texas. Jackson's legacy remains controversial, and opinions on his legacy are frequently polarized. Supporters characterize him as a defender of democracy and the U. S. Constitution, while critics point to his reputation as a demagogue who ignored the law when it suited him. Scholarly rankings of U. S. presidents historically rated Jackson's presidency as above average. Since the late 20th century, his reputation declined, and in the 21st century his placement in rankings of presidents fell. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:53 UTC on Monday, 20 January 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Andrew Jackson on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm long-form Patrick.

Texas judge v. Biden over sexual perversion, Muslim militants killed three Christians in Nigeria, Southern Baptist policy prohibits female pastors

It's Thursday, June 13th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Muslim militants killed three Christians in Nigeria Militants with the Islamic State West Africa Province killed three Christian men in Nigeria recently.  On June 3rd, the extremists stopped a vehicle in the northern part of the country. They allowed Muslim passengers to leave, but abducted the Christians before killing them at gunpoint. The same Islamic group carried out eight attacks against Christian villages in Nigeria back in January. The incident left 12 Christians dead. This came after the Islamic State called for militants to “kill [Christians] where you find them.” Psalm 116:15 says, “Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of His saints.” Nigeria is ranked sixth on the Open Doors' World Watch List of nations where it is most dangerous to be a Christian.  European Central Bank cut interest rates Last week, the European Central Bank cut interest rates for the first time in five years. It's the second major economy to do so after Canada.  The European bank lowered rates from 4% to 3.75%. The move came ahead of the European elections as voters face higher prices.   Meanwhile, the U.S. continues to keep interest rates unchanged. The Federal Reserve held the rate around 5.25% to 5.5%, the highest in over two decades. The Fed anticipates only one rate cut this year as inflation remains higher than its target of 2% annually.  Texas judge v. Biden over sexual perversion On Tuesday, a federal judge in Texas ruled against the Biden administration's attempt to protect students living sexually perverted lifestyles.  The U.S. Department of Education had issued guidance, threatening to remove funding from schools that did not accommodate students' so-called gender identity or sexual orientation.   The Texas Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton brought the lawsuit against the Education Department. He said, “Threatening to withhold education funding by forcing states to accept 'transgender' policies, that put women in danger, was plainly illegal.” 10 Texas abortions in January Also in Texas news, the state's Health and Human Services Commission reports there were 10 abortions in the state in January.  Texas has banned nearly all abortions since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. The pro-life  law does allow abortions under a so-called medical necessity exception in life-of-the-mother cases.  Since July 2022, 91 abortions have been done under the exception. Before that, elective abortions averaged 2,000-3,000 per month.  Southern Baptist policy prohibits female pastors Delegates with the Southern Baptist Convention gathered over the last week for their annual meeting. Delegates considered changing the denomination's constitution to permanently prohibit women from serving as pastors. Sixty-one percent voted in favor of the amendment. However, a 66% majority is required to change the constitution.  The Southern Baptist Convention's statement of faith limits the office of pastor to men. However, nearly 2,000 SBC churches have women pastors. Crime down across America The Federal Bureau of Investigation released a report on crime during the first quarter of this year. Violent crime was down 15% compared to the same period last year. Other crime rates also decreased. Reported rapes were down 26%, robberies were down 18%, aggravated assaults were down 12%, and property crimes were down 15%.  A third of Major League Baseball has not affirmed sexual Perverse Pride month Many sports teams show their support for so-called Pride month in June. However, about a third of Major League Baseball teams have not shown that support on social media.  The Christian Post notes those teams include the Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Guardians, Houston Astros, Miami Marlins, Oakland Athletics, San Diego Padres, and Texas Rangers. However, many teams still find other ways to show support.   The unique communication of African elephants Scientists have discovered that African elephants communicate with each other on an individual basis. Elephants use low-frequency rumble calls to communicate. They're out of range for human hearing but can travel long distances. The new research found the animals even have unique calls to address specific elephants.  Biologist Mickey Pardo noted, “The elephants responded much more strongly, on average, to playbacks of calls that were originally addressed to them relative to playbacks of calls from the same caller that were originally addressed to someone else.” Psalm 104:24 says, “O LORD, how manifold are Your works! In wisdom You have made them all. The earth is full of Your possessions.” Newscast listener: “My wife plays The Worldview for the boys.” Last night, I picked up the phone and called Troy in Horseshoe Bend, Arkansas who gave $25 toward The Worldview's month-long fundraiser to finance the 6-member team for another year. I asked him what motivated him to make a donation. TROY: “My wife plays The Worldview for the boys, for their homeschool in the morning. We have eight kids total, but we have four boys at home that she's homeschooling. So, we listen to that every morning with them and just wanted to support another good cause.” Troy listed the ages of his eight children. TROY: “I've got three girls out of the house. They're 27, 25, and 22. And then we have four boys in the house that are 11, 9, one turned 8, and then a 6-year-old. And then we have a 9-month-old girl, also.” He explained the kind of stories he likes the most. TROY: “We like to hear about our brothers and sisters [in Christ] over in other countries instead of just the junk that's on the mainstream media news. We like to hear about people we can be praying for. And my boys get to see that life isn't at all as easy as we have it over here in the U.S.” 18 Worldview listeners gave $3,125 Toward our $57,100 mid-point goal tomorrow, June 14th, 18 Worldview listeners made a donation yesterday online. Those 18 donors gave $3,125.  Ready for our new grand total? Drum roll please. We live in an incredible time! As an author, you have a variety of options for publishing and funding your books. If you're doing self-publishing, one of the most interesting ways to fund the book is by crowdsourcing it through Kickstarter. If you've ever wondered how to use Kickstarter to fund your book launch, today's your lucky day! Lestie May Zachary is a Southwest USA native who loves to write about her family roots. She is a veteran homeschool teacher of sixteen years. When Lestie isn't writing or doting on family, she and her husband enjoy the cabin life on Crown Lake in Horseshoe Bend, Arkansas. I wanted to have Lestie as a guest today to talk about her new When Old School Meets New School, which is an exciting new guidebook from LMZ Publishing, perfect for children ages 11-14. When Old School Meets New School is full of fun and engaging activities that mix old-fashioned games and activities with modern technology, giving children the opportunity to learn and have fun in equal measure. With puzzles, activities and stories, this book helps children bridge the gap between the traditional and the contemporary. She funded the book through an impressive Kickstarter campaign last Fall, and I was thrilled to be one of her backers. I was even more impressed that this was Lestie's first time using Kickstarter. The campaign was a lot of fun, and the book itself is even more impressive. You can really tell she put her heart and soul into it! In this interview, we discuss: Her book production process Various assets she created for the book launch Why she used Kickstarter, and the process for using it Details about the number of backers, her expenses, and other numbers The biggest challenges and benefits of using Kickstarter Her recommendations for authors considering using Kickstarter If you've never considered this unique way to fund a book, this conversation will give you insights you've probably not heard before. You can connect with Lestie through her website, https://www.lestiemayzachary.com. * * * Today's episode is sponsored by Karen Hunsanger, an incredible editor known as “The Word Wizard.” I've worked with Karen many times, and she is your secret weapon for crafting the highest-quality book possible. The battles and events of the Seminole Wars cover fields throughout Florida. Unfortunately, in many cases, other than in some dry official reports and personal letters and diaries, or oral tradition, what happened on those fields is largely lost to history and the public.  There is a corrective, however. TwoEggTV brings the wonder of travel and the adventure of historical inquiry into these places. Through succinct video reports, Rachael Conrad and Dale Cox, breathe life into stale reports by imagining these battles and events through a visual and audio presentation. These historians hail from Two Egg, Florida, hence their name. It is the small town that brings the big picture to history, especially the Seminole Wars. In this episode, Rachael Conrad relates the places TwoEggTV has visited to bring an awareness of the Creek and Seminole Wars. Battles at Fort Mims and Horseshoe Bend in the First Creek War, along with the Battle of Negro Fort help explain the stakes on the eve of the First Seminole War. TwoEggTV prepared follow-on video dispatches on the battle with Lieutenant Scott on the Apalachicola River, and on other engagements in that war.     A sampling of TwoEgg TV productions.   Intrepid Historian and Reporter Rachael Conrad gets to test the wares with Civil War living historians (Above series) (Below) TwoEggTV broke the news of massive underground cave complex in the panhandle region.    Host Patrick Swan is a board member with the Seminole Wars Foundation.
