In this episode I tackle the fascinating eye questions you've had for me. I explore the debate over castor oil for dry eye treatment, share a wild cataract surgery story involving a rock-hard lens, and answers questions about anisocoria and optic disc drusen. Takeaways: The Risks of Nevus of Ota: Dr. Flannery explains how this rare pigmentation condition, seen in Daniela Ruah, increases the risks of glaucoma and uveal melanoma, emphasizing the importance of regular eye exams for those affected. Eye Rubbing Dangers: Chronic eye rubbing can lead to serious conditions like keratoconus, corneal changes, or even optic neuropathy in extreme cases. Gentle rubbing is okay, but moderation is key. Castor Oil Debate: While castor oil is a popular folk remedy for dry eye, Dr. Flannery highlights its lack of conclusive evidence and advises patients to stick with scientifically-backed treatments like artificial tears. Rock-Hard Cataracts: He shares a rare cataract surgery case involving a dense, diamond-like lens that had to be removed intact, highlighting the importance of early intervention for cataract treatment. Exploring Anisocoria: Dr. Flannery breaks down common causes of uneven pupil sizes, from benign physiologic anisocoria to signs of more serious conditions like Horner's syndrome or third nerve palsy. — To Get Tickets to Wife & Death: You can visit Glaucomflecken.com/live We want to hear YOUR stories (and medical puns)! Carl Zeiss Meditec AG Deep Dive: Q&A Q&A with Carl Zeiss Meditec AG's Head of Investor Relations, Sebastian Frericks US Refractive Market Performance and Competitive Landscape Has refractive competition increased in 2024, particularly from J&J's ELITA or Staar Surgical? - J&J's ELITA: While J&J has entered some markets with their ELITA system, it has yet to gain significant traction in major markets like the US and China due to regulatory hurdles and limited product features. Notably, the system lacks approval for its SILK procedure, which is positioned as a competitor to ZEISS's SMILE therapy. - Staar Surgical: The overlap between ZEISS's laser-based refractive solutions and Staar Surgical's ICL (implantable collamer lens) business is minimal. ICLs cater to niche cases, such as high myopia corrections, where laser-based therapies have limitations. ZEISS maintains a competitive edge in broader applications due to its extensive track record and safety profile, with over 10 million SMILE procedures performed globally. - Strategic Positioning: ZEISS is poised to strengthen its competitive edge with the upcoming rollout of the VisuMax 800, a more advanced platform designed to enhance procedure speed, precision, and patient outcomes. How is your US refractive business performing amid reports of soft demand? - Market Trends: The US market has faced a decline in refractive procedure volumes in 2024 due to high interest rates and reduced consumer spending capacity. Unlike Europe or Asia, a large proportion (approximately 65%) of US refractive procedures are financed, making the market particularly sensitive to macroeconomic conditions. - Outlook: Despite the challenges, the US refractive market holds significant potential. The market size remains underdeveloped relative to historical highs, with 700,000-800,000 annual procedures, far below its peak. ZEISS's technology, particularly the minimally invasive SMILE therapy, is well-positioned to capitalize on market recovery as economic conditions improve and consumer confidence returns. What's your outlook for US equipment sales recovery after Q3 order trends? Stabilization: US equipment sales began stabilizing in Q3 FY24, with improving order entries and a book-to-bill ratio above 1 in the months preceding fiscal year-end. Early trends in FY25 continue to show positive momentum. Growth Drivers: ZEISS is optimistic about growth in FY25, driven by the anticipated FDA approval of the VisuMax 800 platform in mid-2025. The new platform is expected to attract significant demand from clinics aiming to upgrade their technology and enhance patient offerings. What feedback are you getting on the ZEISS cataract workflow? - Market Reception: The ZEISS cataract workflow continues to be well-received, offering a comprehensive and integrated solution for cataract treatment. Feedback highlights the value of combining diagnostic imaging, surgical planning, and premium IOLs (intraocular lenses) within a single platform. Conclusion Sebastian Frericks highlights Carl Zeiss Meditec AG's resilience amidst market challenges, emphasizing the company's strategic initiatives and leadership in innovation. With advanced products like the VisuMax 800 and comprehensive cataract workflows, ZEISS is well-positioned for recovery and long-term growth in the US market. ▶️ Other videos: Elevator Pitch: https://seat11a.com/investor-relations-elevator-pitch/ Company Presentation: https://seat11a.com/investor-relations-company-presentation/ Deep Dive Presentation: https://seat11a.com/investor-relations-deep-dive/ Financial Results Presentation: https://seat11a.com/investor-relations-financial-results/ ESG Presentation: https://seat11a.com/investor-relations-esg/ =============================== T&C This publication is for informational purposes only and does not constitute investment advice. ...in which we visit Keswick Museum for a deep dive into the life of one of Romantic Lakeland's most under-appreciated figures: writer, former Poet Laureate and long-term resident of Greta Hall, Robert Southey (1774-1843). In the company of Museum curator Nicola Lawson and trustee Charlotte May, we return to Bristol, 1774 and set the shifting social scene for the birth of a young radical – expelled from Westminster – whose education was beset by bullying. Alongside new wife Edith Fricker and creative soulmate Samuel Taylor Coleridge, we follow Southey north to Keswick and learn about daily life at Greta Hall, where the young poet became sole breadwinner in a busy household of sisters and their home-educated children. With tragedy a constant in the Southeys' life – four of the couples' eight children died before reaching adulthood – we discuss Edith's enduring mental illness, the fast-growing Keswick of the early 1800s, and the great joy Southey derived from family and domestic life. Reflecting on a (sometimes) controversial and (always) prodigious writing talent (Southey's output far eclipsed that of Wordsworth or Coleridge), we namecheck some of his finest works: from the first published version of Goldilocks and the three bears (The Story of the Three Bears) through his remarkable História do Brasil to the onomatopoeic masterpiece The Cataract of Lodore. Brazing the frosty cold, we conclude our conversation alongside Southey's grave at Crosthwaite Church, where we consider his relationship with Keswick and the great loss felt at the death of a towering talent and an adored family man. You can find out more about Southey and Keswick at Keswick Museum: keswickmuseum.org.uk The Museum is on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter/X.

Cataracts are a clouding of the lens in the eye, which is normally clear. The lens helps focus light rays onto the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. When the lens becomes cloudy, it scatters light and prevents a clear image from reaching the retina. This can cause blurred vision, dimmed vision, and difficulty seeing colors. There are two main reasons why people get cataracts: Aging: This is the most common cause of cataracts. As we age, the proteins in the lens of the eye can break down and clump together, causing the lens to become cloudy. pen_spark Opens in a new window www.nhs.uk Aging and Cataracts Other medical conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, can increase the risk of developing cataracts. Other factors that can contribute to cataracts include: Injury to the eye Long-term use of certain medications, such as corticosteroids Exposure to radiation Family history of cataracts If you think you or your grandpa might have cataracts, it's important to see an eye doctor for a diagnosis. Cataracts are usually treated with surgery to remove the cloudy lens and replace it with a clear artificial lens. Cataract surgery is a very common and successful procedure. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/moodkillers/message
