Dia de la Familia has launched in Carmel to honor Hispanic Heritage Month. It's in stark contrast to the cancelled La Fiesta Indianapolis. The in-person festival that's been held for more than 40 years was cancelled due to security reasons related to immigration policies and potential ICE raids.Claudia Escalante, an organizer for Dia de La Familia, said her community can't hide in fear. Hundreds of residents attended to sing, dance, and eat in Midtown Plaza. There were food vendors, art installations, Zumba, a conga line, and murals.“The best feature of Indiana are the people,” Escalante said. “There's no beach here. There's no Wall Street. There's the Indy 500 and sports, but the greatest feature are the people are the Hoosiers.”Escalante said Hoosiers also include the Latino and Hispanic community. She is a Columbian immigrant who came to Indiana more than 20 years ago.Escalante said ICE wasn't one of the security concerns. She said Carmel police are on standby for safety, and the people who spoke to News 8 said they felt safe attending.Pablo Solano is a Carmel Resident and is originally from the Dominican Republic. He and his wife were enjoying warm arepas.“This event here sends a message that we can have an event safely and we can enjoy ourselves,” Solano said.Escalante said when it comes to security concerns, ICE wasn't one of them.Escalante said the event is an opportunity for local Latino entrepreneurs to get exposure, like baker Dioselim Garcia, who sold out her cookies.“We are not in the shadows. We are seen as Latino People,” said Dioselim Garcia, founder of Waldis Artisan Bakery.Escalante said the event is not just about celebrating Latino and Hispanic heritage, but also about sharing it with others. Escalante moved to Indiana more than 20 years ago. She is a Colombian immigrant who embraces her Carmel Community.“We only ask for an opportunity,” Escalante said. “We're here because we love this country and we want to make it better. So, give us an opportunity. We love you. We're here. We're part of your community, and it's only going to get better.”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Timestamps: (0:00) Intro/Hello again!/What I did on my summer vacation (9:53) Recap This week on Miami Vice: Crockett and Tubbs are trying to bust a local player named Tommy, until his deal gets cuts short by a warning from an ice cream truck and they flee, leaving Vice in the lurch about Tommy's new source. They get news that their budgets are being cut by Captain Highsmith, who is making a run for County Supervisor, and naturally are pissed off. They try to get close to an NY dealer, Reginald Hawkins, but one of his goons, gets in the way, and then Crockett and Tubbs are whisked away by a group of suits. The suits are part of a shadowy network of vigilante cops who are tired of seeing criminals through the cracks and who have seen the shortcomings first hand. As the group tries to close in on the new source that Vice is after - Escalante - we see the lines get more and more blurred. When does the pursuit of justice cross into criminal behaviour itself and what happens when you're in too deep to get out?
In this episode, Michael Escalante, former Global Vice President of Hilton's Center of Operational Excellence, shares how his team delivered 6–12% savings on labor across more than 600 hotels, while improving both guest service and employee satisfaction. Michael explains the methodology behind Hilton's approach: observing processes instead of people, quantifying human behavior, and modeling work as a function of volume. He also shares how Hilton overcame the hardest part -- change management -- by building transparency, securing buy-in from teams and unions, and creating a culture of efficiency with technology. Also see: Labor, Leadership & Leveling Up: How Michael Escalante Went from Aerospace Engineer to Hilton's Global VP of Operational Excellence A few more resources: If you're new to Hospitality Daily, start here. This week, Gare and I talk with Clèmence Michallon about her new thriller Our Last Resort. We dive into her inspiration for the book, her fresh take on a locked room thriller, and how she crafted a believable cult. Our Last Resort SynopsisInnocence doesn't bail you out; it just makes you easier to trap.Frida and Gabriel arrive seeking a fresh start at the stunning Ara Hotel in the secluded desert of Escalante, Utah. Once so close they were able to finish each other's sentences, they've grown apart in recent years after a sudden, unspeakable tragedy. Now, at the luxe resort, they are ready to reconnect between dips in the pool and hikes on spectacular desert trails. It all feels like paradise—until the dead body of a beautiful young woman who was vacationing at the Ara with her powerful, much older husband is discovered. When the local police arrive and suspicion quickly falls on Gabriel, Frida is forced to revisit memories from their upbringing in a cloistered cult in upstate New York, their dramatic escape, and the scandal that followed. Frida's belief in Gabriel's innocence never wavered at the time, but now even she can't ignore the evidence mounting against him.Alternating between past and present timelines, Our Last Resort builds toward a shattering climax that uncovers the fate of the murdered Ara guest and poses the question: how well do we ever really know those we love? Multi-layered, gripping, and intense, Clémence Michallon's latest suspense novel is a nail-biter until the last page, cementing her status as a major new talent in the genre. The Ataris were formed in 1996 in Anderson, Indiana. The Ataris originally began as the home demo-recording project of lead singer guitarist Kristopher Roe and guitarist Jasin Thomason. The group were discovered a year later by Vandals founder Joe Escalante after songwriter Kristopher Roe met him at a concert. Impressed by his demo tape, Escalante asked Roe to put together a full band and record for his label, Kung-Fu Records. Roe then picked up and moved to California in search of bandmates. (Thomason decided to stay in Indiana), and eventually added guitarist Marco Peña, bassist Mike Davenport, and former Lagwagon drummer Derrick Plourde. Six bodies were found in Wonder Valley between December of 2019 and January of 2021. Some of the bodies in the desert, including the disappearance of 37 year old single mother Erika Lloyd, started making local, then national, news. But there were no national news reports about James Escalante. We’re going to dive into the missing persons report and compare accounts from the last people who saw James to see if we can shed more light into what really happened out there in the desert on June 25, 2020. On June 25, 2020, 56-year-old James Escalante, who also went by Blackhawk, left home on a red mountain bike to help Dee, a friend of his and his girlfriend Sherry’s, whose truck had gotten stuck in the desert. But he never made it back home, and no one reported him missing until September 7th. Heather Escalante and her husband Jon, James’ son, began their own search. After Heather started posting on social media and looking for information, she heard that remains were found in the desert on August 8th by a hiker. The body was a John Doe. Half his face was missing, he had long black hair and there was no ID found. Heather contacted the detective working the case to say that she believed that the body could be James, and on December 15th, the family’s worst fears were confirmed. They got a call from the coroner. James Escalante was dead. His cause and manner of his death were undetermined. What happened out there in the desert? On June 25, 2020, a 56-year-old named James Escalante, who had Native American heritage and was also known by his nickname, Blackhawk, left his home in Wonder Valley, California on his mountain bike James lived with a girlfriend, Sherry, and she told law enforcement that he left the home that day to head down the road about 10 minutes from their place to help a friend of theirs named Dee whose car had gotten stuck in sugar sand, which is almost like dry desert quicksand. It’s hot out there; the average temperature for that part of the desert in July and August is 89 degrees and highs regularly top out over 100, or even 105. And out there in the desert it’s dry heat so it feels like you’re baking in an oven. It happens every year - hikers go missing or people just wander off and get lost and don’t come back. But the terrain also means that when people do go missing under mysterious circumstances it can be easier for local law enforcement to write it off as just an accident. Now supposedly the friend, Dee, had been out looking for rocks near Highway 62 and Shelton Road east of Twentynine Palms. And James had lived in that desert for a long time, and knew the area well. So the plan was for James to meet her at a specific intersection to rescue her. But once he got out there, according to Sherry, he couldn’t find Dee. So James called Sherry on his cell phone to figure out what was going on. At that point, Sherry called Dee on a three way call, and James told Dee to honk her horn so that he could find her. He seemed to think he could hear her, so he hung up. But he never got to Dee’s car. And no one ever saw James Escalante alive again.
