God Ween Evan continues its periodic interview series, where someone in the world of Ween talks with the GWE team. This time, Will Nunziata interviews former Ween manager Dave Ayers, a longtime A&R man who signed Ween to TwinTone Records. In this episode, Ayers recounts stories from when he first met the boys up until the release of Chocolate & Cheese. Ayers is a titan in the music business, signing and managing such acts as Soul Asylum, Uncle Tupelo, Wilco, Helmet, TV on the Radio, The Black Keys, St Vincent, Kamasi Washington, and Geese (just to name a few!). He also wrote an Air America show with Rachel Maddow, Lizz Winstead and Chuck D. Listen in as Ayers recounts stories from Ween's early days, ones about the original cover art and album title for what would become God Ween Satan, or the incredible way in which Dean and Gene had him initially listen to The Pod, or the unbelievable story about Gener's wedding in Las Vegas, and much more. God Ween Evan continues its periodic interview series, where someone in or around Ween and the Ween community chews the fat with the team. God Ween Evan is back with a new Ween cover series we are calling Cover It With Gas & Set It On Fire! We put out the call to the Ween fan community and received numerous kick ass Ween covers, but none more inspired than our first selection: Eli Wing's "Tender Situation." Eli Wing is a Ween fan and musician based in the Netherlands who records under the name Hushed Hands and his take on Ween’s beloved bromance ballad "Tender Situation" is ethereal and devastatingly beautiful. Please enjoy his effort and our lovely conversation. Listen to more from (Hushed Hands) on Bandcamp: https://hushedhands.bandcamp.com/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Welcome To The Party Pal: The Mind-Bending Film & Television Podcast You Didn't Know You Needed!
In this episode of Welcome To The Party Pal, host Michael Shields — with the help of actor / comedian / writer / director and host of the podcast God Ween Evan, Will Nunziata — dissects A Face in the Crowd, the 1957 film starring Andy Griffith (in his film debut), Patricia Neal, and Walter Matthau, and directed by Elia Kazan (Gentleman's Agreement, On The Waterfront, East of Eden, A Streetcar Named Desire). The story centers on Larry "Lonesome" Rhodes, a drifter who is discovered by the producer of a small-market radio program in rural northeast Arkansas. Rhodes ultimately rises to great fame and influence on national television, but at a great cost. In this episode Michael and Will explore the themes present in the movie that are relevant fifty years after the film premiered. They examine how a film that while funny, embracing of a doomed romantic narrative and a captivating rags to riches tale, can now be looked at as a momentous warning of what can happen when power and corruption meets the media age. Join in on a look back on a film that explores how the medium of television can aid in the rise to ultimate power, and one that even foretold the rise of President Donald Trump. Same Boat was filmed secretly aboard a cruise ship and features Evan Kaufman, David Carl, and Katie Hartman (and almost featured Will Nunziata). This episode is titled “Warped Society,” and yes that could be a critique on the world today, but it was actually a college comedy tv show I produced back in the mid-late 90s. The person I’m talking with is Will Nunziata, who I met when I brought him on the show as a member of the cast and crew. The “troupe” if you will. We had a great conversation and had a great time reconnecting. I found him fascinating then as I do now, but for different reasons. Currently living alone and across the country from his wife and boy, he speaks of being oblivious to world while growing up, living in a bubble of comedy, forgetting about the time he caught a flying baby, not being able to process the emotion of anger, and a recent panic attack. I also dive into my own childhood history of accidents, and how we cope with trauma. We had a wonderful conversation. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I mention “New Dads Place,” my support group for dads on Facebook. Will plugs his podcast “God Ween Evan”. God Ween Evan continues its periodic interview series, where someone in or around Ween and the Ween community chews the fat with the team. Next up is singer, songwriter, and drummer Eric Slick. Slick is often recognized as a drummer with rock acts including Dr Dog and Natalie Prass, but to label this octopoidal beast a simple tub thumper does a disservice to his immense musical talent. His first LP Palisades dropped in 2017 and revealed a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter with ambitions beyond the four on the floor. In 2018 he released the Bullfighter EP, a dense four song cycle anchored by a string quartet and rounded off by electronics, percussion and distant piano crashes. In June, he is set to release another solo album, a topic discussed in this episode, as well as his ties to Ween (trying out for the band, working with Deaner on music during quarantine, etc.), epic Thanksgiving jams at John & Peter's, the most fire bars Brian Wilson ever spit, and more!Learn more about Eric's diverse and exciting projects at: http://www.ericslick.com/. He has had a prolific solo career, provided scores for several films, has a prodigious list of album production credits to his name (Los Straitjackets, Arthur Alexander, Nancy Sinatra, the soundtrack CD of the film Swingers, to name a few), as well as many other notable projects. For the purpose of this podcast, Ben was the producer of Ween's 12 Golden Country Greats and Aaron Freeman's Marvelous Clouds. The focus of this episode lies wholly on Ween's famed Country album and this interview with Ben features an in-depth track-by-track, behind-the-scenes look at the birth of Ween's fifth studio album from the producer responsible for bringing it to life. God Ween Evan continues its periodic interview series, where someone in or around Ween and the Ween community chews the fat with the team. Next up is Ashton Freeman. Ashton is not only the child of Gene Ween, but an extremely talented musician in their own right. Ashton is a 20 year old multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter from Brooklyn, New York, currently working towards their BA in Music from Goucher College. Ashton has been involved in music their entire life, starting early in Paul Green’s School of Rock at age 8. There, they first performed on stage in venues such as the Highline Ballroom and The Knitting Factory. Ashton released an EP (You Make Me Happy, produced by Chris Harford) in 2016, and is currently working on their first full-length album. In this episode, one which concludes with Ashton performing two songs exclusively for the GWE audience, Ashton speaks on their musical influences, when they first came to realize how remarkable Ween was, their songwriting processes, and much more. Adding another facet to their Ween-centric offerings, God Ween Evan kicks off a periodic interview series, where someone in or around Ween and the Ween community chews the fat with the team. First up is Chris “Tomato” Harfenist, best known for being the lead singer and drummer for the alternative rock band Sound of Urchin. Tomato also plays drums in the Dean Ween fronted band The Moistboyz, as well as in Crescent Moon with Dave Dreiwitz. Ween can feel very overwhelming to get into. Their discography is endless, their music odd, and there's an intimidating amount of vocabulary words, culture, and backstory related to these two best friends from New Hope, PA. I'm hoping to detangle it all in this episode with guest Paul Gutkowski, long-time Ween fan and host of the "God Ween Evan" podcast. We discuss lyrics, pants-pooping, love songs, voice modulation, the concept of brown, and the popular cartoon that "The Mollusk" inspired. Hail Boognish!
After a false start in her Season 1 episode, Sarah returned to the pod last episode and very much liked what she heard. The God Ween Evan team decide to put her burgeoning fandom to the test with a full album review of Ween's legendary compilation, Shinola vol. 1. Tune in and find out where Sarah falls on this barometer of brown. Will it be shit or Shinola? God Ween Evan is proud to be sponsored by CBD Vermont. Welcome To The Party Pal: The Mind-Bending Film & Television Podcast You Didn't Know You Needed!
On the cusp of its 40th Anniversary, the Welcome To The Party Pal duo — with the help of actor/comedian Will Nunziata (of God Ween Evan fame) — celebrate the masterpiece that is Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now. Apocalypse Now journeys to Vietnam in 1970 where Captain Willard (Martin Sheen) takes a dangerous and uniquely psychedelic journey upriver to find and terminate “with extreme prejudice” Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando), a once-revered officer who has reportedly gone insane. In this episode the differences between the original release, Apocalypse Now Redux, and the forthcoming "Final Cut" are discussed, the lengths it took to bring this astonishingly ambitious project to life are hailed, the film’s poignant commentary about Imperialism is considered, and Will makes the case for the film to be known forevermore as not only one of the greatest films about Vietnam ever birthed, but one of the best road trip movies of all time. Now that Evan is inarguably a full-fledged Ween fan (MISSION ACCOMPLISHED), the God Ween Evan team assembles for one final time this season to discuss Ween's 2012 break-up and the solo albums that were birthed from that era. Doing Deaner dirty by spending the majority of the episode focusing on Gener's solo albums, the finale of Season One exhibits, in all its glory, a post-Capitol Theatre Evan, and an exploration of what may lie ahead... In the latest episode of Welcome To The Party Pal, hosts Brian Sachson and Michael Shields — with help from actor, comedian, writer and co-host of the podcast God Ween Evan, Will Nunziata — dive deeply into There Will Be Blood, the 2007 American drama film written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and starring Daniel Day-Lewis and Paul Dano. Expounding on the greatness of There Will Be Blood, Brian, Michael and Will laud the outstanding directing, acting, cinematography, and the score of the film, but in doing so tensions rise and a heated discussion ensues, where the talents (or lack there of?) of director Christopher Nolan becomes heavily contested, and where the trio attempts to get to the bottom of exactly what the Best Film of 2007 actually was! God Ween Evan is a podcast celebrating the American rock 'n' roll band Ween, and one man's refusal to open his heart, mind, and soul to the band's music. That man is Evan Kaufman, a New York City-based actor, writer, director and all around beautiful human being. A lover of comedy and music, Evan, it reasons, should adore and appreciate Ween's absurdist wit and musical craftsmanship, but he doesn't. WHY? Fortunately, his friends and fellow artists Katie Hartman, Will Nunziata, and Paul Gutkowski are here to unlock the mystery of what is wrong with Evan, and shepherd him into the brown light of the Boognish. If they can save Evan Kaufman, they'll save us all. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
