A (relatively) in-depth analysis of American singer-songwriter Natalie Prass in (just over) fifteen minutes.Prass grew up in Virginia, where she met fellow musician Matthew E. White. They played in a band together in the early 2000s, then White moved to Richmond to study jazz. Prass' own journey took her to Berklee and Middle Tennessee State before she settled in Nashville. Eventually she reconnected with White, who was still based in Richmond and was working toward the launch of a record label called Spacebomb. The rest, as they say, is history...In this episode I am in discussion with Dr. Andrew Webber.A huge thank you to the wonderful Heather Murray.https://buymeacoffee.com/lownoiseWhy buy me a coffee?Low Noise is proudly ad-free. Dominic Angelella is someone Dan has described as a "known quantity". He's helmed bands like DRGN KING and Lithuania, and put out his own solo work for years in Philadelphia. But in an attempt to have no fixed address, he's found himself living in Ireland for the past year or so. Dan talks to Dom about his earlier days in the Philadelphia music community via Drexel's music business program, getting touring opportunities with bands like mewithoutyou and Foxing, touring with Lucy Daucus and Natalie Prass, and all the while working on his own songs amidst tour dates, bus rides, and stolen moments in stairwells. His latest album, 'God Loves A Scammer', is out now on all digital platforms, and also available on vinyl through his Bandcamp. ALSO: 'Want To Play A Song?: Live On 25 O'Clock Vol. 1' is now available for pre-order. The compilation features 10 original live performances from artists on the podcast. All the money from the compilation will go to Philly Music Fest's charity department. Philly Music Fest is a multi-day, non-profit music festival that has given over $500K to Philadelphia music charities. The pre-order gets you access to two tracks off the compilation, and will be fully available on 9/30. Let the pre-ordering begin!

"Anything that knocks ya out, hits you harder than you planned," sings Matthew E. White on "Genuine Hesitation," which opens K Bay, the third solo album from the Spacebomb founder. And it's a knockout of a record, to be sure. A spirited producer and collaborator known for his efforts with Natalie Prass, Mountain Goats, Flo Morrissey, Sharon Van Etten and many more, the album finds him situating his traditional song craft in a future funk and avant-pop setting. On today's episode of Aquarium Drunkard's Transmissions podcast, he joins host Jason P. Woodbury to discuss the album, as well as his duo recording with former guest Lonnie Holley, Broken Mirror: A Selfie Reflection, which serves as a mutated musical twin to K Bay. Along the way, he touches on his communal approach, Miles Davis, his youth in the Philippines, and the transcendent qualities of The Flamingo's "I Only Have Eyes For You."
Matthew E. White's new album, K Bay, is a wildly diverse record that has no regard for current trends. But then that's how Matthew has run his career from day one. Not only is he a musician, he is also the founder of the Spacebomb music company, which has released albums by artists like Natalie Prass, Bedouine and Nadia Reid, and become one of the most well regarded independent music companies around. We talk about that whole ride in this interview, as well as Matthew's upbringing in the Philippines and Japan, his path into music, and much, much more.
Matthew E White is a jack of all trades. A producer hailing from Richmond, Virginia, he's worked with everyone from Sharon Van Etten to Natalie Prass, Justin Vernon to The Mountain Goats. A few years ago he set up Spacebomb, a studio and label which also acts as a community space for artists to experiment. This all feeds off his own work, as a multi-instrumentalist, former jazz player, and songwriter for whom music has no boundaries. In short, Matt is the kinda guy you love to get stuck talking to in the kitchen at a house party, which I why I asked him to Take 5. From ESG to Frankie Valli to Marvin Gaye, crawl inside the full spectrum of Matthew E White's mind. ESG - You're No Good Augustus Pablo - King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown Miles Davis - Rated X Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons - December, 1963 (Oh, What A Night) Marvin Gaye - Mercy Mercy Me (the Ecology)

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space. Stephen Thompson | Aug, 10, 2021 Flock of Dimes may be a "solo" project for Wye Oak's Jenn Wasner, but she couldn't pass up an opportunity to invite a few friends over. You'll spot their familiar faces all over this video: Mountain Man's Amelia Randall Meath, Molly Sarlé and Alexandra Sauser-Monnig, percussionist Matthew McCaughan from Bon Iver... you even get full attendance from Sylvan Esso, given that Meath is seated alongside her partner Nick Sanborn. (He doesn't play in the set, but he did co-produce Flock of Dimes' latest album, so Wasner asked him to sit in and bring a book to read.) The result is a communal set — filmed at Sylvan Esso's new studio in Durham, N.C., called Betty's — that doesn't merely re-create three of the songs from this year's Head of Roses. These acoustic performances actually shed new light, thanks to radiant and radically different arrangements, while fully capturing the warmth we look for from Tiny Desk concerts. (Plus, with nine people in the frame, it's a cast large enough that when they clap between songs, they almost sound like a crowd.) In Episode 20 of In Loving Recollection, Philadelphia native Eric Slick tells the story of his 2020 record Wiseacre. Recorded in his home base of Nashville, Tennessee with producer Jeremy Ferguson (Lambchop, Turbo Fruits), the multi-instrumentalist discusses the circumstances that shaped the album’s creation touching on the inspirations behind record’s sound and the influence that his marriage to singer-songwriter Natalie Prass had on the lyrical content.

Canciones de amor e ilusión para emprender un nuevo. Camino y dejar atrás lo que nos hacía daño, lo que nos engañaba o nos hacía engañarnos. This Live Cuts episode explores the energy of a solo artist performing without a net. Keith Jarrett's 1975 "Köln Concert" album was completely improvised under less-than-perfect conditions. The result was an album that literally sold millions of copies. There's also a preview of a track from "Wiseacre," the new album by Eric Slick (Episode 2), which features his wife Natalie Prass on vocals.

Featuring two 40-minute sets from each artist, the show will conclude with a finale featuring the live debut of “Freedom.”Jake of Illiterate Light shares:We met Devon backstage at the Newport Folk Festival in 2019 and hit it off immediately. We crossed paths so often on tour in the following months that it just made sense to do a collaboration and full US co-headlining tour the following year. The dates were all planned for Fall 2020 and we had studio time booked in Nashville for the three of us in March, but it all came to a screeching halt with the initial outbreak of COVID-19. As everything around us shut down, we forged through and wrote “Freedom” together on Zoom, finished the recording from our home studios without ever stepping in the same room, and now we are finally getting together to play it live, streamed from Brooklyn Bowl Nashville + Fans.com on Friday, November 13th!Tickets are available for purchase now on a donation-based system, with GA tickets available starting at $10. Fans who wish to donate $40 or more will be entered into a giveaway for a guitar signed by all artists. Focused around the alchemic collaboration and camaraderie between members Jeff Gorman (lead vocals, guitar, synth pedals he plays with his feet) and Jake Cochran (vocal harmonies, stand-up drum kit) and recorded with producers Vance Powell (Jack White, Kings Of Leon, Chris Stapleton) and Adrian Olsen (Foxygen, Natalie Prass), the album is part soaring indie rock, part swirling psychedelia, part atmospheric folk and — alongside critically acclaimed performances their summer at Bonnaroo, Newport Folk Festival, and Lollapalooza — signaled their triumphant arrival as an emergent musical force. At the top of 2020, the duo was named to NPR’s “Slingshot Artists to Watch,” with the outlet highlighting the duo’s “energetic live shows,” during which the two play “a full band’s worth of instruments.” NPR also highlighted the group in their “Best Songs of 2019 (So Far),” declaring their single “Carolina Lorelai” to be “an explosive mission statement from a band that’s here to stay.”Alongside critical acclaim from Billboard (“a reverent and downright hypnotic experience”), Uproxx (“a refined vein of My Morning Jacket / Band of Horses-style Americana”), and Relix (5 Artists You Should Know), the album was also met with success at radio – with multiple tracks off Illiterate Light cracking the Top 10 of the Adult Alternative (AAA) charts. The duo kicked off a North American headline tour at the end of January – playing to sold out rooms in Washington DC, Philadelphia, Boston, and an enraptured crowd at Brooklyn’s Rough Trade. This followed heavy touring in 2019 with Rainbow Kitten Surprise and The Head And The Heart. High-energy audio and video from these headline shows were released throughout 2020 as part of the duo’s “In The Moment” live series. While the series began pre-lockdown, it took on significant meaning in recent months, becoming a tribute to the power of the live performances and the community formed during the duo’s shows, leading SPIN to declare: “The promising Virginia-based duo has an ambition that is promising at a time when rock needs it.”ABOUT DEVON GILFILLIAN:Devon Gilfillian’s debut album, Black Hole Rainbow, was released by Capitol Records earlier this year. It includes his top 5 AAA radio hit, “The Good Life,” a rallying cry for inclusion. Streams of “The Good Life” skyrocketed after Gilfillian performed the song on “CBS This Morning Saturday.” The collage-style lyric video for the song incorporates images that Gilfillian captured in Nashville over the summer, during the BLM protests.American Songwriter hailed “The Good Life” as “[a] soul-soothing ode to finding peace and beauty in life.” The Tennessean hailed Black Hole Rainbow as “one of the best albums released this year, period.” The album also won a spot on Iowa Public Radio’s list of “The Best New Albums (So Far) Of 2020.” The New York Times said, “Devon Gilfillian, a soul songwriter based in Nashville, made his formidable debut album, ‘Black Hole Rainbow,’ with Shawn Everett…warping vintage sounds toward something deep and strange.”Gilfillian performed the national anthem at NASCAR 2020 on the day they banned the Confederate flag. He also recently launched The Good Life Fund, which supports organizations that are doing good in the world, including Give A Note Foundation and Rebuilding Together Nashville. Gilfillian has played numerous festivals, including Newport Folk and Montreal Jazz. He has supported such artists as Mavis Staples, Grace Potter, Local Natives, Lauren Daigle, KALEO, Michael McDonald, Chaka Kahn, Keith Urban, Gladys Knight, Brothers Osborne and Michael Franti & SpearheadWe want to hear from you! Prolific singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Eric Slick joins Jamie on the show. Slick who recently released his outstanding new album 'Wiseacre' is known for his work with Natalie Prass, Dr. Dog, and for his critically acclaimed solo work. His new album is full of technicolor brightness and radiates light in a year we could all use some of it. For more, visit www.ericslick.com
This week on Transmissions, we're joined by songwriter, Dr. Dog drummer, and noted Twitter personality Eric Slick. His new album of classic pop songcraft is called Wiseacre. Best known for his work with Dr. Dog and his wife, songwriter Natalie Prass, Wiseacre was inspired by the golden-hued melodies of Harry Nilsson, Haruomi Hosono, and a general '70s gloss. It's a deeply personal record, one that explores contentment and domesticity, as well as unpacking no small amount of personal weirdness and trauma. Eric joined Aquarium Drunkard contributor Ben Kramer—you might know him from Radio Free Aquarium Drunkard’s The Tonight Zone, as featured on the Adult Swim live stream to get into it all: how his marriage to Prass influenced the lyrics of the record, how his meditation practice informs his songwriting, and what it's like to get into a real songwriting groove.
In this episode of Across The Margin: The Podcast host Michael Shields converses with multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter, and drummer extraordinaire Eric Slick. Slick is best known as the drummer for Dr. Dog (performing on their albums Shame, Shame (2010), Be The Void (2012), B-Room (2013), The Psychedelic Swamp (2016) and Abandoned Mansion (2016)), but his solo work in the last half-decade has been consistently impressive and wholly captivating. This week, Slick releases his latest album Wiseacre, which is named after the location where he became married to singer Natalie Prass, who guests on the album’s mesmerizing single "Closer to Heaven." While the album features a grouping of airy and enchanting pop-rock songs the are borne of the joy that stems from domestic bliss, Slick delves deeply into self-acceptance and combating your own insecurities throughout the entirety of the album. In this episode, Michael and Eric discuss how personal the Wiseacre project is to him, how the album was birthed (with the help of Grammy-winning producer Jeremy Ferguson), his other solo releases (particularly 2019’s Bullfighter — a song cycle about the first Jewish American matador Sidney Franklin), what Dr.Dog has been up to during quarantine, and a whole lot more.Follow Eric Slick on Twitter @erickslickmusic and on Instagram at @strangeamerica. God Ween Evan continues its periodic interview series, where someone in or around Ween and the Ween community chews the fat with the team. Next up is singer, songwriter, and drummer Eric Slick. Slick is often recognized as a drummer with rock acts including Dr Dog and Natalie Prass, but to label this octopoidal beast a simple tub thumper does a disservice to his immense musical talent. His first LP Palisades dropped in 2017 and revealed a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter with ambitions beyond the four on the floor. In 2018 he released the Bullfighter EP, a dense four song cycle anchored by a string quartet and rounded off by electronics, percussion and distant piano crashes. In June, he is set to release another solo album, a topic discussed in this episode, as well as his ties to Ween (trying out for the band, working with Deaner on music during quarantine, etc.), epic Thanksgiving jams at John & Peter's, the most fire bars Brian Wilson ever spit, and more!Learn more about Eric's diverse and exciting projects at: http://www.ericslick.com/. "My favourite playing that I’ve ever done is when I’m in this space of no-mind." Eric Slick is an accomplished musician from Philadelphia who is a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. He is the drummer for the band Dr. Dog and his past credentials include, The Adrian Belew Power Trio, Ween, and Natalie Prass. Besides playing drums for Dr. Dog, Eric also has his own solo project, aptly named Eric Slick, and his punk band Lithuania. Eric discovered his sense of creativity at a very young age. He and his sister, Julie, would write songs about low budget movie posters and perform these songs for their parents in the living room. To aid this outlet, Eric’s father taught Eric and Julie how to overdub recordings with two boomboxes daisy-chained together. From what I gather, the Slick household was a creative one. At the age of eleven, Eric discovered Paul Green at the Griffin Cafe. Paul is the creator of the now-famous School of Rock. Throughout Eric’s pre-teen/teen years, he would play drums at the School of Rock, while Julie joined later to play bass. At the School of Rock, they learned a broad range of music ranging from Pink Floyd to Frank Zappa. Towards the end of Eric and Julie's time spent at the School of Rock, Paul had suggested to Adrian Belew that Eric and Julie were his best students and thus Adrien hired them to play in his trio. Eric has had many twists and turns throughout his professional career. He is a vastly deep musician with the desire to explore his creativity to the fullest degree. Releasing solo works “Palisades” and “Bullfighter” it is clear that Eric is not limited to simply one musical role and that his artistry beckons for more. In this interview, we explore many of Eric’s philosophies, stories, and personal growth throughout his life. You Will Hear About…. Eric’s introduction to the School of Rock. Why he left the Adrien Belew Power Trio. How Eric wrote Palisades and why he left Philly. Eric’s experiences with his dream therapist. Eric’s interpretation on my dream. Overcoming panic attacks and how they affected him. Why to go with the flow of life. Why Should You Listen? If you are a fan of Eric Slick and Dr. Dog then you will find this to be interesting because of the depth that we go into. If you have never heard of Eric before, you will likely still find this to be an enjoyable podcast episode and may hear echoes of previous episodes in it. There is a common theme lately with the podcast. That is we need to let go of our egos and expectations. We need to go with the flow of life instead of man-handling it into what we think we want it to be. Stop overthinking. Be present with what you are currently doing. Be kinder to yourself. The big picture of what we are here to do is such an important and valid topic. This episode continues to explore these concepts and shed more light on this vast subject. Natalie Prass. Hoo. Smooth-ass funk, jazz, summertime soul made for driving real slow, windows down, at the spot. Lyrics, are deep. vocals, are absolute fire. Rhythm section, in the gotDamn pocket. Guitar and keys just giving that texture, filling up spaces with beautiful things. Listen, huh? It's worth your time, I promise. Hang with me. Love yinz -G

Happiest of Valentines Days to ya, listeners! To celebrate the duality of this love-filled and oh-so-fraught time, the Talkhouse Podcast asked five of our favorite artist couples to answer two questions: What’s the best thing about being in a two-artist relationship? And, what’s the worst?? Answering both Cupid’s and our calls are: Katie Crutchfield (Waxahatchee) and Kevin Morby; Maliibu Miitch and Chase Money Marz; Heather Matarazzo and Heather Turman; Sadie Dupuis (Speedy Ortiz, Sad13) and Dylan Baldi (Cloud Nothings); Natalie Prass and Eric Slick (Dr. Dog) So get ready to hear about inter-couple artistic competitiveness, the strains of touring in a relationship, having recording sessions on your spouse’s birthday, and the perils of dating “civilians.” As I couldn’t ask these artists to walk through a potential relationship minefield that I wasn’t willing to tread myself, I’m very pleased (and slightly afraid) to welcome my wife—and Pitchfork’s Managing Editor—Amy Phillips on to help intro this episode. Buckle up! Check it out, and subscribe now to stay in the loop on future episodes of the Talkhouse Podcast. You can also now follow us on Spotify! —Elia Einhorn, Talkhouse Podcast host and producer Today’s episode was co-produced by Mark Yoshizumi. It was recorded by each of the participating couples, and by Mark Yoshizumi. The Talkhouse Podcast’s theme song was composed and performed by The Range.
Here's the second part of my picks from the chiller cabinet from the year that was. I could have done a third part, as 2018 was an embarrassment of riches when it came to Downtempo music, but i'll leave it at that. Natalie Prass released the follow-up to her breakout debut album last summer. The Virginia singer-songwriter scrapped material she had planned to use for the record and wrote "The Future and the Past" after the 2016 U.S. presidential election. The album finds Prass adding disco and R&B sounds to her music. Prass and her band stopped into the CPR Performance Studio before a show at Denver's Larimer Lounge to play three songs from "The Future and the Past." She also spoke with Jeremy Petersen about sharing a stage with Paul McCartney at a recent music festival, why she decided to change her sound on the album and working with producer Matthew E. White.

Natalie Prass' new LP, The Future and The Past, has been a long time in the making. Reeling from the results of 2016's presidential election, Prass made a last-minute decision to cancel the recording sessions she'd booked with producer Matthew E. White, feeling that the songs she'd written about a breakup had to be replaced with new ones which addressed what was unfolding in America. To celebrate the release of this powerful new record, Prass was joined by White at Manhattan's iconic bookstore The Strand for a deep-dive conversation about her creative process and vision for these songs. Their talk also gets into sexism in the studio, aborted attempts at writing with L.A. songwriters, and how Prass almost chose running a dog-clothing company over her music career. Check it out, and subscribe now to stay in the loop on future episodes of the Talkhouse Podcast. — Elia Einhorn, Talkhouse Podcast host and producer Today’s episode is in partnership with The Strand. It was recorded by Jason Kelly and co-produced by Mark Yoshizumi.

Podcast animé par Mehdi Maïzi, Raphaël Da Cruz, Brice Bossavie et Shkyd.RÉFÉRENCES CITÉES DANS L’ÉMISSIONMoha La Squale, Mister You, Elektra, Bendero (Moha La Squale, 2018), MHD, Controlla (Drake, 2016), I like it (Cardi B, Bad Bunny & J Balvin, 2018), Guy Ritchie, Sniper, Jo Le Pheno, Bodak Yellow (Cardi B, 2017), Invasion of Privacy (Cardi B, 2018), ASAP Rocky, Hamza, Zoo (Kaaris, Or noir, 2013), Bella (Maître Gims, Subliminal, 2013), La graine (Moha La Squale, 2018), Multicolore (Tengo John, 2018), Hostile (404Billy, 2018), Vibras (J. At long last, your favorite physical comedian, Kevin McDonald, has returned to his audio podcast! And he’s brought Judah Friedlander, Todd Barry, and Musical Guest Natalie Prass with him. But first, Kevin gives listeners a sneak peak at his joke-writing process (5:40), sings a comedy about writing a comedy song because he's out of ideas (8:15), and performs a brand new sketch about a miserable man and the death of his wife from a sustained, minor, annoying pain (11:15). And for the main course! Kevin sits down with Judah & Todd to talk about their Netflix specials, bombing onstage and on TV, the origin of Judah’s style and onstage persona, and whether Todd was meant to be a phone prank comic (22:03). And after, musical guest Natalie Prass performs a three-song mini-concert (1:03:30)! Special Thanks to sketch performers Hallie Haas & Maggie Widdoes! Recorded live at Union Hall in Brooklyn, NY for the Brooklyn Podcast Festival!Kevin McDonald's Kevin McDonald Show is a Forever Dog Podcast:https://foreverdogpodcasts.com/podcasts/kevin-mcdonalds-kevin-mcdonald-show
Cameron Ralston is the house bassist and a producer for Spacebomb, a collective of musicians based in Richmond, Virginia, who set up a record label and production company based around a house band. They followed a model established by the likes of Stax or Motown, with a signature style inspired by a love of great American soul music. As The Guardian put it, "they make albums that sound like a million dollars" - and this and this October they assemble in London for a one off show that will include guest collaborations with the likes of Natalie Prass, Slow Club, The Waterboys' Mike Scott, Foxygen and Charlie Fink from Noah and the Whale. Ahead of that show we met Spacebomb bassist Cameron Ralston to talk about something he likes to do when he's not in the studio or on the road: gardening.
