Are we living in an age that's ugly by design? This question arose after Petra and producer Sam read an article by the writer Andrew Shamy. The second in a series called "The Museum of Things We've Lost", Andrew unpacks the role of beauty and the consequences of its absence. In this episode of Sunday Sanctuary, Petra is joined by both Andrew and architectural design lecturer Abby Temby-Spence. As always, space is made for reflection alongside great waiata/music. Haere mai! Sacred texts: Andrew Shamy's article. His whole substack is well worth looking through, and maybe even subscribing to.... Just as their music breaks free from genre constraints, their journey crosses borders without the need for a metaphorical passport. We're finally discussing the Matt Fraction & David Aja run of Hawkeye! With colors by Matt Hollingsworth and letters by Chris Eliopolous But first is Barbara Ann the highest form of rockin and rolling you can achieve? What did Jake think of Khruangbin live? What is Anthony's Joe Pesci update? What drinking game do we play this episode? Is Cody barely alive? Are we done with Patreon? What did Cody think of the Pee-Wee Herman HBO documentary? Does Anthony have the Paul Reubens look? Is Hawkeye the Avenger most likely to jerk off in a movie theater? What do we think about the colors and letters in this series? Is it jarring when a series changes its ongoing artist? Did this series have awesome covers? Did this comic make us fans of both Hawkeyes? Does this run feel like a slice-of-life comic more than a superhero one? Is this a grounded, street-level Marvel story? Is there a lot of humor in this comic? Did the MCU Hawkeye series take a lot from this run? Does this Hawkeye feel Jeremy Renner inspired? Why does Anthony recommend this as a great stand-alone comic for new readers and old? Is there any required reading before this Hawkeye run? Have we only covered Marvel omnibuses on the pod so far? Is this one of the best comics in the last decade or so? Do Anthony and Cody think it's one of the best EVER? Why does Cody resonate with Hawkeye so much? Do we love Pizza Dog and Kate Bishop? Would Sophie Thatcher make a good Kate Bishop? Is this a one-of-a-kind comic? Does artist David Aja have playlists that go with each issue? Do some parts of this run give Brubaker vibes? Do superhero archers in DC and Marvel get any respect? Who would we cast DJ Qualls as?What did we think of Hawkeye's brother Barney? Did Fraction and Aja use the Marvel Method to make this comic? Does Kate Bishop feel human? Did this have one of the best car chases in comics? Are there James Bond vibes in this run? Did we like Madame Masque? Do we like when heroes get their ass kicked and disappoint the people in their lives? Should you trust a ginger? Is helping the LGBTQ community an Avengers level threat? Does Cody want to de-juice Anthony? Was Carrie Coon wasted in Infinity War? Does Kevin Feige need to step down? Who is Flynt Ward the Weed Lord? Is this comic a masterpiece? What the heck is Lent?! After being introduced to it through talkback radio, Petra decided to go in search of what Lent is all about. If you're curious about what this time of the year is all about, by all means come along! In this episode of Sunday Sanctuary, Petra's first stop was to talk to the pride of Tairua, Strahan Coleman. You've likely heard Strahan on the show before, and this time he helped to unpack why Lent is about more that just fasting or "behaviour modification". Find Strahan's project Commoners Communion and his book 'Thirsting' here After a reflection on communion, and some waiata/songs, Petra also catches up with Producer Sam who provides an update on part of his life that seems to be aligning with the themes of Lent. Haere mai! I had the best day yesterday at WOMAD with a wonderful bunch of friends. Khruangbin were incredible, I was soaring through the trees for the entire 90 minutes that they played. And I'm still having the best time at the Adelaide Fringe in what has turned from a two-week, eight-show run, into a month-long season of 17 performances. I feel like I'm getting better at choosing not to engage with things and people that don't make me feel good. There's so much of that out there, especially if you spend even a bit of time on the internet. Comment sections are full of angry, hurt people taking their feelings out on the world. It's their choice to do that, and we really can't do anything to stop them, but we all have the power to choose how we react to that stuff, and I choose to disengage. Today I tried to wash my Mum's partner's car at the car wash and after downloading their stupid app, giving them my details, confirming my phone number, and then paying for a $12 wash with my card, they told me that the machine was broken and I couldn't use the thing I'd just paid for. It's in infuriating situations like that when the use of those reserves of energy is warranted - I sent them an email, and you better believe I will be calling them tomorrow, and reporting them to consumer affairs if I don't get my money back and some vouchers on top of it. 'Happy Wash' indeed. And this is my point man!! If I was letting myself get angry at every lunatic I saw on the internet, maybe I wouldn't have enough left of myself to pursue these motherfuckers when I actually need to. And yes I DO need to, by the way. Oh I will have my twelve dollars. And then I'll go back to enjoying good times with wonderful friends, which is where the energy comes from in the first place.

Philip Andelman's inspired take on the language and rhythm of music videos has impacted the medium in countless ways. The results are evident in his collaborations with contemporary artists, including Usher, Melissa Etheridge, Ludacris, Maxwell, d4vd, James Bay and Taylor Swift. Formative experiences with Annie Leibowitz launched his entry-point into photography. After NYU, continued experiential education under the guidance of Joseph Kahn, the legend, exposed Philip to the world of music videos with an ethos to help keep head above water. He worked as a second unit director on some of the most pivotal music videos ever made, including Moby's Southside and U2's Elevation. Soon after came the opportunity to step into the director's chair for the first of six video collaborations with Lenny Kravitz, beginning with 2004's Where Are We Runnin - a hedonistic exploration of faith. Some of the notable videos in Philip's catalogue include John Mayer's Waiting on the World to Change; Duck Sauce's It's You; Fiona Apple and Andrew Bird's Left Handed Kisses; Miriam, by Norah Jones; and Beyonce's Halo, featuring Michael Ealy. In our conversation, we discussed the origins of his journey and upbringing in France and New York; the grant he received from Martin Scorsese; the artistry in working with Maxwell; showing Jay-Z what he thought was an unfinished video; and a fateful Samsung commercial he directed. We also discussed his degree of versatility, and its effect on transcending genre.Opening Credits: Anitek - Tab & Anitek - Mina I CC BY-NC-ND 3.0; Genx Beats - Lofi Beats - 01 Always (Lofi Mix) I CC BY 3.0. The time has come to confront the elephant in the room. Of all the things wrong with society today, the fact that rock bands are generally shut out of modern music is right near the top. Who doesn't love a good rock band? Penny-pinching record labels? The general public? The youths? We get into this dilemma with our good friend, The Old Boy Himself Ryan Blake as we take a look at some great new(ish) rock bands doing great rock band things in the year 2024. Considering the number of people who are constantly chasing after contentment, you'd think someone would have found a tried and true formula by now, right? Unfortunately, it seems we need to keep looking, if such a formula even exists (which after making this episode of Sunday Sanctuary seems increasingly unlikely). Trusting in a comment he once heard that it's more interesting to hear from someone still working it out as opposed to someone on the other side, producer Sam steps forward to share some of his wrestle with contentment. Sam introduces Petra to his friend Cole and the two have a conversation about finding contentment in the midst of their very different lives. Later on, Petra talks with Rev. Spanky Moore about what he has learnt and noticed about contentment. Spanky charts his journey from playing in a punk band and through his radio career before landing up as an Anglican priest and tells Petra about one life-changing conversation he had at age 25. Haere mai! Sacred texts: 'The Dude abides' scene from The Big Lebowski 'Alleyway conversation' scene from Before Sunrise (an incredible film!) Music: Take Five by Dave Brubeck (played during Sam's boat story) East Cape by Headland (played during Sam's boat story) Le Petits Gris by Khruangbin (played during Sam and Cole's conversation) Sun Rays Like Stilits by Tommy Geurrero (played at the end of Cole's conversation) Actually by Rozi Plain (Can't Get No) Satisfaction by The Rolling Stones (played during communion) Getting to Me by Caroline Rose Anchin Kfu Ayinkash by Hailu Mergia and the Dhalak Band (played at the end of Spanky's conversation) memory as miniatures by Rachika Nayar (played during the benediction)

Kindred know-it-alls Deon and Jay kick knowledge…f#@% it, you know where this is going. In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For the past half century, countless artists and professionals across the globe have benefited from utilizing the oblique strategies technique when attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2024, kooky, knuckleheaded yet somehow still award-winning* hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential theme of their upcoming thirty-ninth episode. Together, they decided... to default back to the alphabet. Because they have a reasonably solid grasp of the alphabet and how it works. They had previously utilized the letters A thru J, so naturally, they went with K. Our favorite selections from the K section in outr collections mixtape: [SIDE ONE] (1) Al Gromer Khan – Konya (2) John Krautner – I Need Sugar (3) Rahsaan Roland Kirk – Freaks for the Festival Part One (4) Kitchens of Distinction – Railwayed (5) Khruangbin featuring Nina Simone – Black is the Color of my True Love's Hair [SIDE TWO] (1) The Kingbees – Man Made for Love (2) Key-Matic – Breakin' in Space (3) Klark Kent – Away From Home (4) Kris Kristofferson – Please Don't Tell Me How the Story Goes (5) The Korgis – Perfect Hostess Sonic contributors to LLR podcast episode 39 include: Holland-Dozier-Holland, Brothers Johnson, Head Hunters, Sault, Blues Brothers, Donald Trump, The Alkoholiks, Dave Matthews Band, Pearl Jam, Dreamville, J. After the road trip music of Khruangbin, it's time to get back to some ambient tunes. There's not much to say about this mix other than I was going for a vibe of sitting outside on a warm summer night, gazing at the stars. That's it simple, straightforward ambient music. I've been following the rise of Khruangbin since 2018 when they released their album "Con Todo El Mundo." Khruangbin is a musical trio that mixes global influences, including Thai funk, soul, psychedelia, and surf rock, into their mostly instrumental music. The New York Times has described their sound as "extremely slippery, genrewise." It's been crazy to watch them go from relative obscurity to a band that now has nearly 8 million monthly listeners on Spotify. Check out their stuff here... https://khruangbin.bandcamp.com/ I've always wanted to do a mix with the vibe and feel of Khruangbin. And here it is. I have collected enough tracks to make several of these "Khruangbin Vibes" mixes. There is a creator on Mixcloud that has a ton of mixes under the banner of "Khruangbin Vibes" so I've decided to go with Khruangbin Mood Mixes. It's Worldy - music without borders and this show is no different.
On this week's show, we... toss the Maxell UDXLII into the Debts cassette deck & hit play on our 2024 Half-Time Mix Tape - a random sampling of tracks from some of our favorite albums of the year so far. All this & much, much less! Debts No Honest Man Can Pay started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004.
As with many other mixes this one has a specific track that was the inspiration. The tune is called "Franky's Floyd" from the album "An Evening with Friends" by Ron Boots. It's a live album by Boots and his friends. The track is called "Franky's Floyd" because Frank Dorittke plays a nine minute variation of David Gilmour's solo from Comfortably Numb. It all sounds so familiar but with enough variation to make it interesting. Thanks to Paul Asbury Seaman for giving me the heads-up on this track. I am in awe of it every time I listen. https://ronboots.bandcamp.com/album/an-evening-with-friends The title of this mix is a bit misleading, while there are a couple of screaming guitars here, most of the mix is just loud-ish guitar tracks that lean towards a spacey vibe. I think this set does a good job combining new and old tracks, going from 1975 & '77 to the 2010s and then 2020 & '21. I've definitely been in a guitar mood lately with this one and a couple more guitar-based mixes in the works. One of them will have a Khruangbin vibe because they have a new album out and they are one of my favorite artists on the music scene right now. Cheers! Billie Eilish's new album Hit Me Hard and Soft has been hailed by critics as her best album yet. She describes it as an “album-ass album”, meant to be listened to in its entirety, but it's also provocative: it takes on fame and body-shaming ("People say I look happy just because I got skinny") and women she wants to please (“I could eat that girl for lunch, she dances on my tongue”). So what do we think? Lilah is joined by two experts, the FT's music writer Arwa Haider and US media business correspondent Anna Nicolaou, to discuss the role Billie plays in our pop pantheon.-------We love hearing from you.
