What is “Good”? (Romans 8:28) by Sun Valley Church
Romans 8:28 is a well-known and well-loved verse, but it is often misunderstood and misapplied. The true promise of this verse is not that God is working out ‘all things' to give you comfort in life, but that He is working out all things to bring you into conformity with Christ. This sermon was preached at Legacy Reformed Baptist Church in East Grand Forks, MN. For more information, visit LegacyRBC.org.

Scripture: Romans 8:28-30 Key Takeaways: The bad things will all be turned to good. Romans 8:18 John 11:33-35 John 11:38-39 The good things can never be taken away from you. John 6:44 Jeremiah 32:38-41 Ephesians 1:4-6 “What matters supremely, therefore, is not, in the last analysis, the fact that I know God, but the larger fact which underlies it—the fact that he knows me.. I know him because he first knew me, and continues to know me. This is momentous knowledge. There is unspeakable comfort—the sort of comfort that energizes, be it said, not enervates—in knowing that God is constantly taking knowledge of me in love and watching over me for my good. There is tremendous relief in knowing that his love to me is utterly realistic, based at every point on prior knowledge of the worst about me, so that no discovery now can disillusion him about me, in the way I am so often disillusioned about myself, and quench his determination to bless me.” - J.I. Packer, Knowing God “Ultimately, the proof of a right approach to these doctrines is that you find in them the greatest urge to holiness and sanctification. If your belief of these doctrines has not driven you to holiness you are in a dangerous condition … you are misusing them to say: Well, it is all right with me, it matters not therefore what I do. I am saved … No one can truly see these doctrines without being humbled.” - Martin Lloyd Jones The best things are always ahead of us. ■ “Foreknew”: God set his love on us. ■ “Predestined”: God planned a glorious process & destination for us. ■ “Called & Justified”: God works out his plan in time. ■ “Glorified”: God completes the plan in eternity. There are many things regarding God's sovereign purpose that we don't understand and might never understand this side of eternity, but right here, in Romans 8:28, we have a revealed truth, a sure promise that we can hold on to. We will consider two broad things about this promise: 1. The Promise Declared 2. The Promise Qualified

God's Word for Today 31 Jan 2024 19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” 20 To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. -Rom 12:19-21 ESV OVERCOME EVIL WITH GOOD When we are wronged, we are not going to ‘get even'. To avenge is never our option. Either the hurt comes from a believer or from an unbeliever. What is the reason behind? We should refuse to take revenge because God is much better at it than we are. God says to us, "Trust me to handle revenge and justice for all who harm you instead of seeking it yourself." In a sense, Paul implies that taking our own revenge would dilute God's opportunity to avenge for us in His great anger against those who harm us. A desire for justice for ourselves and those we care about is not wrong by itself. Paul simply reminds us to trust God's timing and power to deliver justice as He sees fit. Paul quotes Moses' words from Deut 32:35 to declare that God has always His intention to take vengeance against those who wrong others. Moreover, we are called to an active, positive, and generous engagement with those who harm us. This is counter culture. Our natural tendency is to ignore the harmful person, is it not? It's supernatural act to do good to the person who hurt us. Does this mean that we are going to tolerate abuse? Definitely not! Retreating from violence or avoiding a physical abuser is not being discouraged here, at all. If we can take steps to avoid future injury, that is the right and wise thing to do. God is not commanding us to welcome any kind of abuse. Paul quoted Prov 25:21-22, “If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat, and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink, 22 for you will heap burning coals on his head, and the LORD will reward you.” This appears to work towards our disadvantage by relentlessly kind in seeing and meeting the enemy's basic needs. What is the wisdom of God? As we do this, two things could happen. Firstly we reflect God's own mercy to us who were once His enemies (Rom 5:10). Secondly, we do that we do not deserve to be treated poorly and that we are stronger than those who harm us. By so doing you will heap burning coals on his head. This has an allusion to a known custom. To carry a pan of burning coals on one's head as a sign of repentance. Kindness and forgiveness to those who abuse us, ideally, will make them ashamed of themselves, and hopefully bring them to repent. The strongest, most powerful response to persecution and hatred is to love your enemies. Text: Romans 8:28-30 ESV 28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. 29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified. -Rom 8:28-30 ESV ALL THINGS WORK TOGETHER FOR GOOD Let's take note that Paul has been describing the life of Christians on this side of heaven. We are groaning as we long to escape the suffering of this life and to be with our Father God in person (v.18–23). We wait in the sure hope of the day our bodies will be resurrected and we will share in God's glory (v.24–25) through the intercession of the Spirit [v.26-27]. Hence, we could be joyful, hopeful, and even thankful because of His promise. This promise is exclusive to those who are saved. Non-believers are excluded. To the saved ‘all things will indeed work together for good. It's inclusive too. It includes all things. "All things" should be taken to mean each and every circumstance one might experience, even in pain or suffering. Moreover, it's cohesive. The word "Work," or "work together," must be understood in light of God taking action in the world. He is the one who causes all things to work together in and through all circumstances toward a specific end. What is that end? That end goal is "good." God's plan is also superb. The ‘good' does not necessarily mean happy painless or financially successful or our idea of the best possible outcome on any given day. God's ultimate good for us is to glorify us in eternity (Rev 21:1–4). As Paul expounded, “For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.” [v.29,30] Hence, we say ‘God is good all the time; all the time God is good” ------------------------- Visit and FOLLOW Gospel Light Filipino on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram

We look today at Romans 8:28-30. When we finish today, we will have solved the long standing debate about free will versus God's sovereignty. Spoiler alert: there is a mystery there that we will never understand. We also spend time with one of my favorite verses, Romans 8:28 - all things work for good. This doesn't mean all things are good, but all things work for God. God can bring good out of everything, and there is not a single part of our story that God can't redeem and use for good! Join us for our daily reflections with Andy. In 10 short minutes, he'll dig a little deeper into Scripture and help you better understand God's Word.If you'd like to receive this daily reflection on your phone, text @39110 to 81010 to sign up.Read our passage here - https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Romans%208%3A28-30&version=NRSVUEYou can watch this in video form here - https://revandy.org/blog/
9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with the Lord's people who are in need. Practice hospitality. 14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. 17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. 18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” n says the Lord. 20 On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.” o 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
On the 14th Sunday of Ordinary time, this sermon from Romans 12:9-21 was given by Pastor Scott Crowder. The Christian life should never be communicated as life serving God and fulfilling divine obligations. By the pouring out of the Holy Spirit our lives become empowered with the capacity to overcome evil with good. In this way, the Christian life can be defined as being love in action.
The Rev. Nick Lannon preaches a sermon on Romans 12, in which Paul gives the church a list of laws by which to live. How are Christians to relate to the good and holy law of God? By submitting to it, and then returning again to the mercies of Christ, who saved us from our sin.

We can faithfully endure suffering because we know that God will use it to make us more like Jesus.

August 12-18 The Apostle Paul begins in this week's readings with a bulls-eye on the struggles we have in this mortal experience and then tells us how to free ourselves from this bondage.
Pastor Cole, back from vacation, resumes our summer series this morning: “Long Story Short: The Bible in 12 Statements.” The Bible's long story is a biography of Jesus. We've been in the Old Testament, but now pivot to the New Testament, to a parable in Matthew's Gospel that Jesus told concerning what he does before he restores all things and what we do in the meantime awaiting that day.
